Great coffee, really loved the black sesame latte. Comes out really quick. The interior is really beautiful with ample seating. On a Sunday morning it was pretty crowded but with a line that moved quickly. Also what is up with the people there? Why is everybody so well dressed and preppy? I felt like I was getting coffee in LA or something. Everybody was in their 20-30s dressed like they were going to Erewhon afterwards. Dog friendly too! Be aware there's no WiFi for studying. read more

Ever have a 'Jekyll and Hyde' experience at a restaurant? I did at Surf Camp, but I think it's strongly related to when you show up. One weekend, we decided to try it out ... It was later in the day...closer to brunch time. The space inside is not extremely large and so when it's full of people it can get a little cramped and very loud. And that's what I experienced....not awesome. The second time we went it was still a weekend, but right when they opened. It was perfect! Not too loud, nice employees...such a great experience. I also found my go to meal here! They have tomato soup and also grilled cheese sandwiches. I was able to request an extra crispy grilled cheese and it came out perfect for dipping in the soup. The soup itself was amazing...closer to a tomato puree...so tangy and delicious! Also the cucumber toast with ricotta was super tasty, as was the olena soda. I will be back again, but definitely earlier in the day. read more

Small little neighborhood cafe located in the back of Niu Valley Shopping Center. Drive past the main lot and Union 76 station and you'll see a small lot with Edward Jones, a gym and other small businesses. We came around 10:30 on a Monday and it was quite busy-all of the inside tables were taken but there were a few outside tables open. We were able to snag a parking lot in the otherwise full small lot. There's several sandwich items ranging around $14-16 and coffee drinks around $6-7, as well as baked goods in the case. Unfortunately the grilled banana bread wasn't available so I got the avocado bagel ($14) instead. It was served on soft bagel ( not toasted) with ricotta cheese and avocado spread on top with sprouts. My friend got the prosciutto sandwich ($16) which was toasted focaccia bread with a nice amount of prosciutto, caramelized onions and mushrooms. It was served with chips. It looked very hearty. I liked my iced blueberry latte. It came with the blueberry syrup on the bottom- I stirred it up and it was very refreshing although I couldn't quite get much of the blueberry flavor thru the coffee. No, matter I liked it anyway. We ordered at the counter and the server brought it out to us. It's a nice place to hang and chat but because of that, seating was at a premium and it was a little noisy inside. Also it was a little hard to find parking out front because of the gym goers. There's a locked bathroom down the hall which was nice and clean. Just make sure you lock the door after yourself. I'm glad that there's a nice neighborhood cafe here- a hidden but popular place. read more

Really happy we stopped in Surf Camp for a pre-hike coffee. The space is very inviting, clean and bright with friendly baristas. We had to try the black sesame latte. It was probably a little sweeter than I typically like my coffee to be, but the flavor was really nice. I'd order it again as a little treat. The ceramic mugs are also really pretty. Nice seating area outside, too, with plants separating you from the parking lot. I'm a fan! read more

Visited again and got an Iced Blueberry Latte for takeway. It was alright...not as good as their Black Sesame and Kinako Lattes, both fantastic. Situated near the Niu Valley Shopping Center. This occasion I parked at the mall...lotta stalls. Peeps drive sketchy in this lot - but that's pretty much ever mall/shopping center. Such a cute coffee shop in Niu Valley! We came in after doing a sunrise hike and this was such a lovely treat. Surf Camp coffee is a bit hidden on the backside of the Niu Valley shopping center, behind 7-11. I wouldn't be able to have found this spot without Yelp, it's in a bit of a random location. They do have a parking lot with tons of stalls- super convenient. The space? Beautiful. I'm obsessed with the green title countertop. There's ample tables to sit and the ambiance is top tier. We got their black sesame latte and the strawberry matcha latte. Both were so good but the strawberry matcha was just a tad bit sweet for me. But you can tell that that strawberry syrup was freshly made. I'm obsessed with black sesame and I love that their latte already comes with espresso in it, other spots you have to add it onto your order. I'm a huge fan of matcha lattes and coffee always on the hunt for new spots to try. I was in the Hawaii Kai area after a hike and decided to stop by this place. So glad I did. Their iced matcha with oat milk? So good. Smooth not too sweet and you can actually taste the matcha earthy in the best way. I wish I lived closer because this would definitely be my go-to spot. The matcha flavor came through and I loved the strawberry bits throughout! I enjoyed a hot black sesame latte and an iced blueberry latte. You can opt for alternative milk for $1.00 extra! The black sesame latte struck a perfect balance for me, though the black sesame flavor may not be strong enough for some. The iced blueberry latte was delicious, though a bit too sweet for me. I'll likely add for less sweet next time! Everything is crafted with care and aesthetically pleasing. Love the mugs they use for the hot drinks--made by a local ceramicist. You can even buy a mug/cup for about $50. [Customer Service] The baristas seemed to be well-acquainted with the community members, which I appreciated. Patient and kind staff. Cute neighborhood place. The matcha was solid and you can customize so I got a black sesame matcha latte. The lemon raspberry scone was almost more cake like than scone, but still yummy. Better come early because by the time I got there around 830am, the pastry selection looked picked over. It was either this or a coconut pistachio scone. I think they also had some croissants. The inside is really cozy and there are a lot of seats! ***What I ordered ~ **O'lena Spritz (6/10) ~ I thought the ginger in the spritz would be a lot stronger, but it's very subtle. Honestly, if it was stronger it would better. **Cortado (7/10) ~ It wasn't bad but the oat milk was definitely burnt. There was a very bitter after taste to it, but it was bearable. Honestly, I was just shocked to see that there was a lot of steam coming out of my Cortado when it was being served to me. **Focaccia sandwich (9/10) ~ Honestly, really good. I was looking for a coffee shop and wanted to try something new. The place that attracted me was the interior space. The area was bright and the very spaces. They even have a place where you can refill the water. I have ordered a Lox Bagel and strawberry lemonade. The strawberry lemonade was something different because I could taste the strawberry. I normally taste the lemonade. So I would order this again. The Lox Bagel was good and very tasty. I got my drink fast, but I have to wait a little for the Lox Bagel. read more

Cute tucked-away neighborhood brunch/coffee shop. Fun to people watch or meet up with friends/a date. It got very busy with a steady line from about 11am on a weekend. I got the avocado bagel with fresh ricotta and micro greens. The bagel itself was pretty bland, texture and chew was easy to eat. I ordered a side of the egg salad on top. This combo was a bit too creamy and soft for me. Overall, the avo spread was quite thin and lacking in seasoning. Also ordered the cheddar & chive scone. It was savory and the flavor reminded me of a pretzel. Nice size. The strawberry matcha drink was pretty good, for a signature drink it was ok. Found this new coffee shop tucked away in Niu Valley Shopping Center on Halemaumau Street. Nice, clean with a great selection of drinks and food items! Dog friendly, nice vibe, really casual place to pickup and go or lots of tables to sit down and relax or meet friends! Ample free parking right outside in the parking lot and lots of neighborhood street parking. Located right next to CrossFit Honolulu. We ordered and enjoyed the prosciutto sandwich, grilled banana bread, latte (beautiful latte art) and a nice and hot Americano! Everything was delish! Would definitely be back again! Came here to try the black sesame latte and blueberry, but left with a coffee crumble cake too! The black sesame latte was decent, they mix in some prepared syrup which is cool, but it felt a bit thin and light on the nuttiness for my liking. The coffee crumble cake was good especially heated up. Seems like the pastries are a hit here since the case of baked goods was almost empty by 10am!! Parking lot is not too small, but this place was POPPIN, so it might be a struggle. We parked on the street. Also, the shop is very narrow so it is a bit awkward to wait around. Nice little cafe with great bites! The lox bagel and prosciutto sandwich was delicious. They make their own syrups and the black sesame latte was lightly sweetened, just enough to get that sweet craving crushed. The milk choice is whole, oat, almond and soy. I've visited this place about 7 times in the past several months and can definitely say that I love coming back! Here are my ratings of the drinks and food items that I've tried so far: Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte: 10/10 not too sweet and the strawberry flavor does not overtake the matcha (which I feel it does at other cafes). Iced Blueberry Latte: 9/10 my boyfriend loves this and I think it's a perfect balance of sweetness with espresso flavor. Iced Matcha Latte: 6/10 without any added syrup it was quite bland and there are definitely better options on the menu. Iced Black Sesame Latte: 8/10 I'm not a big sesame fan but this had only a light sesame flavor so I enjoyed it. If you're looking for a strong sesame flavor though you should probably ask for extra syrup. Iced Vanilla Latte: 8/10 good staple that you can't go wrong with. Grilled Banana Bread with Lilikoi Butter: 8-10/10 quality can vary but it's still always tasty. When it's freshly grilled though to the right level of crispiness, it's great! Avocado Toast Bagel: 6.5/10 I know a lot of people seemed to liked this but I felt that the bagel was pretty dry, there wasn't much avocado, and maybe it's because I'm picky, but the micro greens on top weren't it for me. Maybe I got unlucky the day I ordered though! Might try again in the future. Prosciutto Sandwich: 10/10 best deal in terms of what you're paying for. You get a hefty and filling sandwich with lots of flavor and a side of chips! Very yummy! Only issue is it can be quite salty so if you're looking for something low in sodium this won't be for you. Egg Salad Sandwich: 9/10 a bit on the pricier side but very tasty and creamy! Only issue is I'm not a big fan of dill and they do add some inside. Overall good spot to get your coffee and some food! No wifi though and can get a bit hectic during busy hours so I wouldn't recommend coming here for studying unless you want to use your hotspot and come during slower hours! read more

The shop is very cute and the staff are friendly but I didn't love their coffee for ~$8 bucks. I ordered a blueberry iced latte and didn't hear them call my name (probably on me), so I double checked with them about the coffee on the counter because it looked like a normal iced latte, no blueberry in sight, and the staff confirmed it was, they just said they already mixed in the syrup. It didn't taste at all of blueberry and looked totally different than when my friends have gone, where there is a visible blueberry layer on the bottom. Three people tried my latte and it tasted identical to the iced vanilla my other friend got- maybe there was an order mixup after all or their blueberry syrup is very weak. read more

I got the sesame latte, which is one of their signatures but didn't really taste like sesame latte. I'm used to very delicious sesame lattes from Korean coffee shops back in California, so it was a little disappointing. The aesthetics of the cafe is very nice though. Maybe I should have gotten something else. read more

My first visit a year ago was impressive and coffee tasted much better. Today I got a lukewarm cappuccino that ruined the first impression. Some may consider this a minor issue, but for those who value coffee as more than just a drink--as a small moment of comfort and enjoyment--temperature matters. I didn't bother asking for a replacement as I didn't want to endure a judgmental look as if I was saying something insane. Most likely the young person who prepares the drinks doesn't even drink hot cappuccino. Once you pour the drink into cold cup, you end up with a terrible cold liquid. Overall, the place no longer seems to live up to the hype. It has become very crowded, and the focus appears to be more on cold beverages, which may appeal to a younger crowd but not to those looking for a properly prepared hot coffee. read more

Service is efficient and patient! The guy at the counter was able to describe each pastry and where it was made. The croissants were from The Local General Store. I got the Raspberry Lemon poundcake because it was made in-house! Yum! I also ordered the Hojicha Latte with Oat Milk... I enjoyed the smokey flavor... the roasted green tea didn't have much bitterness... yay! Irene let me taste her grilled banana bread... oh, wow! That grilling really pops up the texture and flavor, especially with the side of tart lilikoi butter! Jackie gave me a sample of her chocolate almond croissant... ooh, that flakey, crunchy outer layer! The filling was a nutty, sweet delight! I'm so glad that we tried this relatively new business! I am honored : ) For my drink selection, I enjoyed the iced black sesame latte, which was highly recommended by an employee. This was my first time trying this type of black sesame drink. It was flavorful and lightly sweet. I added almond milk to my drink. 4/5 stars. For my food selection, I ordered a chocolate almond croissant. I was informed by the employee that the croissant was made by The Local General Store, which is located on Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki. As you see in the photo, it's quite large. Flaky and tasty to share! Food: 4/5 stars. The interior is nicely decorated and clean. Utensils, condiments, napkins, straws and more are located at the side counter space near to the cashier. There are tables and chairs available inside and outside SCC. You pick up your order at the counter when your name is called. There are many choices for drinks and food. Something Niu is here... If you don't know you certainly won't find this slightly hidden gem in Niu Valley as Surf Camp Coffee is on Halemaumau Street a block in from Kalaniana'ole Hwy. This cozy shop does occupy a shared parking along with other tenants so it can fill up but is nice to know you won't be doing a search to grab your morning perk. The staff here is a delight that easily answer our questions as we found out that the croissants are supplied by The Local General Store, love the various types of drinks they offer as well, as we started our order I got the Matcha latte with almond milk along with their Grilled Banana Bread which was just so delicious as it's served with a side of Lilikoi butter YUM! For dine-in your items will be served in reusable plate and drinks ware...love as the vibe here is quite vibrant though I do feel it's a great place to get work done but having some breakfast with Nadine and Jackie is always an adventure along with this lovely local Niu-bie.
