Review in a few words: You know what Starbucks is, this one happens to have a clover machine. Wait times can be a little lengthy due to tourist foot traffic and the usual Yalie crowd but the staff is pretty well-trained to handle it here. Review in full: As a law student who has scraped by working in coffee shops for over five years I need a base level of caffeine to function. I am not too picky (I drink the free coffee at my office that tastes like asphalt) but a nice cup every now and then can be a real treat. THIS Starbucks happens to have a clover machine. If you don't know what a clover machine is, it is essentially like a french press that is controlled by a robot scientist. Essentially the machine brews an individual cup of coffee for you that is time and temperature controlled down to the second and degree. The result is a damn tasty cup of coffee. I drink my coffee black and you can certainly taste the difference. If hanging out is your deal, this Starbucks is pretty spacious but it tends to fill up with people reading or otherwise dicking around on their computer. It can be nice to veg out here as the view of High/Chapel is good for people-watching and the architecture of the art galleries provides a nice backdrop. Service is also pretty good here and more importantly, consistent. This is a Starbucks and with the mark-up comes a little bit of customer entitlement. The guys here are happy to remake your drink if something is off... my girlfriend is rather picky so this happens now and again. Don't worry it is part of the deal. All things considered the only thing getting me through the door is the clover. This is a good Starbucks but I am usually pretty no-frills so far as coffee goes. The staff are always courteous, remember your order if you're a regular, and are genuinely kind. I've been coming here for quite a while and rarely have I ever felt treated like an annoyance. Quite the contrary. 9/10 times I get precisely what I want simply by nodding when asked "the usual?." Dark roast, double cupped for carrying ease, side of ice. Even on times when I've had my cup fall or explode and came back for a fresh one they were always curteous and polite. Simply put, I love Starbucks. The selection of coffee, the staff and I free wifi, how can you go wrong? Also I love watching the clover machine! I am not going to go into detail about the Clover machine because there are ready some reviews that talk in depth about it. The other think I like is that they have plenty of tables that are spaced out nicely and I for one never feel like I am rushed or crammed when I am here. I am a huge fan of Starbucks, so all my feedback here is meant to be constructive. I've never had a problem with their drinks, and the baristas are friendly enough. Service can be slow during the morning rush, but mobile ordering is super convenient, and if you order 5 minutes ahead of time, your drink will most likely be waiting for you. Location is very central, at the corner of Chapel and High. The janitorial staff really needs to do something about the interior smell - it reeks of cleaning agent and makes this Starbucks a hugely unpleasant place to study. I have never been to a Starbucks that smells like this one before. I think one reason why it hasn't really been brought up in these reviews is because once you start coming here multiple times a week, you kind of acclimate yourself to the unpleasant odor. Homeless people come through all the time, which not only contributes to the smell but also is highly, highly disrupting when they are asking for change while you are trying to do work and concentrate. I understand that there is very little the baristas can do about this problem, so this is not their fault at all - just a word of caution to anyone who wants to do their problem sets / essays / readings here. The music is quite loud, and it's usually kind of chilly, so not the optimal study spot. Overall, a solid place to grab a caffeinated beverage, but I would highly recommend against doing work / catching up with friends here. read more

I love the atmosphere here. It's such an inviting place to be and study. In the daytime, the surrounding windows allow for warm lighting perfect for reading. I especially love the massive tables! So communal and friendly. There's never any worry that you'll have to take your cup to go because there is always a free seat somewhere. While not crazy about the coffee, I do enjoy the energy inside. It's a perfect alternative to studying in the library which can be soporifically quiet. I would love Starbucks more if they all had a similar ambiance. Or somewhat conversely, I would love libraries (more) if they offered caffeinated beverages inside and didn't reprimand severely people conversing at a moderate volume. read more

I rarely review chains because people will go or not go regardless of reviews just because of the name. starbucks is starbucks, and people crave it. that said, i can't understand why you would. the coffee is terrible. any sort of latte you get is just hot milk and sugar. willoughby's, woodlands, blue state, koffee, book traders, jojo's. WHY STARBUCKS? last time i went, they mischarged my tall to a grande, when i pointed it out, they took my card and charged me for a tall on top of the grande so ended up paying about eight bucks for a tall latte. the interior also looks like a middle school cafeteria. read more

We visited this location today and everything was going well. Drinks were made to our liking. The baristas were friendly and fast with our orders. The one thing I want to comment on was the fact that we had to stand in a long line for one bathroom . There were two bathrooms and when we approached an employee about using the other they had a rude attitude and said we couldn't use it . Apparently it was "out of order" but employees were walking in and out of it . They could have been nicer about the situation. read more

I used to work 3 blocks back on George Street from this location. As warned by other reviewers, the lines can be long, but unlike many other locations that get a lot of foot traffic, they handle it like pros. Everyone knows their assigned job and no one groans about having to take the garbage out or wipe down a counter. No matter the time of day or who's working, this place runs like a machine. Parking is a bit of a nightmare up Chapel, but if you know can figure out the one ways, parking on George or any other parallel street might benefit you. The shuffle and bustle of this location is actually enticing to me. I love the quick turnover of people and watching the interactions of everyone. It's a melting pot of students, doctors, locals, university folk, and every other type of person. Thankfully no matter who comes in or what you order, the staff here will almost always get it right. A few times they've made me wrong drinks (usually just the wrong flavor) and they let me keep the screw up drink which is fine by me! Overall the location stays pretty neat and tidy but in the mornings it can especially chaotic and unfortunately partons don't take the time to clean up the sugar messes they make or drippings of coffee all over. Random note - there's a guy who usually sits next door at the real estate office and plays his guitar for change, but he doesn't harass you or cause any problems. I really don't want to like this place, I don't. Their coffee tastes burnt, their real food isn't any good and the calorie counts make me sad. But the baristas are prompt, the bathrooms are clean, the people are friendly and I love my chai tea. You know what else I love? The massive tables where you can always find a space to spread out your stuff, plug in your laptop and commiserate with all the other pseudo-intellectuals who are hunched over their computer screens with narrowed brows. It's a spacious, bright location with lots of seats and friendly baristas. The clientele is mostly Yale undergrads and grad/professional students. Where to start..... first, you discontinue the Clover machine. Because the coffee urns are rarely cleaned correctly, I can't drink the coffee from the urns, which leaves me to a pour over. Only today I am told I can't get that either nor can I get a coffee from the French press. What gives? What is going wrong with starbucks? Plenty of space at this location -- I like it better than the other Starbucks on Chapel. The service is fairly quick and I've never had any issues with my drinks or food orders. It almost always seems packed with students though, so may not be the most quiet place, but then again it's Starbucks in a college town so whaddya expect...! read more

My go to Sbux in New Haven, cleaner, classier and a better experience than the one down on Chapel St. The best treat at this location is the Clover, if you haven't experienced coffee brewed by Clover than you should. Stopped in here for a meeting with a friend we were having so much fun that the party passed so fast. Had a Caramel Macchiato yummy with whipping cream and caramel drizzle. There were various types of people that pass through there was steady busy. They keep it clean and a nice location. This is tough spot, because it serves all of Downtown New Haven. They are surprisingly quick, even during the morning rush. I've never had to wait long, even when there are a lot of people. Their seating is a little limited, however, they have many outlets, for working wherever you may be seated. I only wish they would keep the back door open, for ease of accessibility. read more

When I was a college student from 2010-2014, I frequently visited this location and loved it. I revisited about two weeks ago, and was very disappointed. No drink was called by name, and the cashiers were rather crass. Most importantly, I ordered a drink with soy milk due to a serious allergy to cows milk of any kind. I have never had a problem with this in the past, but for some reason the barista used cows milk and I was very ill that night. That easily could have been a lawsuit. Horrible customer and slow service. Place a mobile order and it took 15 minutes to make a small drink. There no line in the store and other customers had placed mobile orders after me and picked up before me. When I inquired why it took so long he said theres only one person making drinks. Got it, but you explain my multiple ppl who ordered after me received their drinks before me?! He said there may have been a lot of in person orders. But in the 10 minutes I waited in the store there were no customers ordering in the store. So glad I never have to come in this store again!!! read more

ok i admit i dont really like starbucks, but this one is different .. it is one of the few locations that has a Clover machine .. what's that you say? it's a fancy machine that six years ago was going to be the starbucks killer and then starbucks bought them out. yay for starbucks boo for all the indy coffee shops that could have taken advantage of super new coffee technology and overthrown the evil empire. overall, it makes one cup of coffee at a time and it does it very well and you pay a premium for that (prices vary depending on which single origin coffee you choose) .. it could be $4 for a simple magnificent coffee. here is the marketing blurb i found on the starbucks site... The Clover® brewing system uses innovative Vacuum-Press™ technology to create your cup right in front of you. You watch as a stainless steel filter lowers into the brew chamber. Hot water is added at a precise temperature to brew your coffee for an ideal length of time. The Clover® brewing system controls brew time and temperature digitally, as even small changes here can dramatically affect the outcome you taste in the cup. I love Starbucks in general but I just can't go to this store anymore. The staff are consistently rude, sometimes to the point of hostility. Starbucks is usually known for its friendly service, but here there is almost no effort made by most employees. There are a couple of nice baristas, but the vast majority have a ridiculous amount of attitude, never try to engage in friendly chit-chat, roll their eyes at the simplest question, and often get orders wrong. The line to order is usually very long, but the wait for your drink is even longer. Definitely not a place to go if you're in a hurry, or if you don't like baristas blaming you for them making your drink wrong (when you ordered it correctly in the first place!). As somewhat of a Starbucks-addict, I feel qualified to judge how good a Starbucks is compared to other locations across the country. This one happens to be one of my favorites. The staff is much nicer than average and the service is fast. Lots of tables (often crowded, but you can usually find one) and good food selection. Large in general. On a corner with huge windows, which is nice for people watching, esp if you can get a seat at one of the tables by the window. All this said, Starbucks is still ridiculously overpriced, but you know what you're getting when you step in the door. read more

The environment is great for sitting, sipping a warm drink, and doing some reading or getting some work done. The staff is sometime curt, though. What can I say? Starbucks coffee is pretty much the same, unless you unfortunately are on the receiving end of a beginner or bad barista. This place is no different. Good coffee, good seating for studying, but not for louging. A-OK as Starbucks go. I'm content because I was able to have my internet access while on Thanksgiving vacation. They handled my order of the salted caramel hot chocolate (without salt) with ease.
