It seems Starbucks doesn't screen their employees to the standards you would expect, not to mention their management is very lacking. The standard Starbucks drinks will typically be around 3 stars for me. My latte was made how it should have been made. What really catapulted this review into 4 stars was the service at this location. I received the standard service, but with genuine smiles! I received a smile, by the woman who took my order, and by the man who made my drink and called my order (and also when I asked for some water). This was around 4:30/5pm on the weekend, close to closing hours. The vibe was very relaxed. There was a large area for various seating options, and my favorite spot was the couches that had a view of the street. I would definitely come back to this Starbucks as I felt so welcomed here. Parking is a bit tricky. Right turn off El Camino Real onto 17th, then right again into the one-way alley. read more

My mobile orders are always ready at pick up, if not before. The baristas are always friendly. It's a smaller, noisier Starbucks because it's on El Camino, and it's actually next to Safeway which also has a Starbucks! There are outlets all along the walls at basically every table, there's handicap seating and comfy chairs, as well as bar tables. The servers here are still wearing masks and they're still encouraging social distancing, which I definitely appreciate. I'd say the only downside of this is that there could be more seating! But actually comparing to Starbucks in this immediate area, it's alright. They have a parking lot in the back on el camino (south side), as well as some street parking on the north side. There are signs here that say they might not have all their ingredients due to covid, so it's possible they don't have all possible drinks! read more

Wonderful, welcoming and friendly staff. This used to be a busy Starbucks as it's located right off Hwy 92...small, narrow parking lot that exits right near a traffic light...so when you leave you hope for that nice, friendly driver who will let you cut in before the light turns green. Fortunately, this doesn't seem to be an issue anymore but probably bad for this Starbucks...never a line, drinks made quickly and if you have the app and order while parking, ready before you walk in. Seating is closed but the place seems clean and staff adhering to the safety protocols with the floors clearly marked. read more

I feel like big chain coffee shops don't always get the recognition they deserve, especially if they have wonderful employees working here. Today is my birthday (thank you Starbucks for my free drink!) and I swung in on this rainy day, only to be happily greeted by the staff, namely Cameron (I believe that's her name). This team of young ladies give off all the positive vibes--truly makes all the difference in this gloomy weather. Waited for a while and was missing one item. Asked about it, matter of factly, and got chastised basically. So here's my problem. During COVID19, I rely on UberEats and Starbucks to deliver what I order and to call me if something isn't in stock. Having several food intolerances/allergies, I'm placing trust in Starbucks that even though the platform won't allow me to leave a note warning the shop, when I put "Coconut milk" instead of "Milk" that there's probably a reason for that. So when I'm delivered a Frapp and I have a reaction to it, because someone thought it was a-okay to substitute milk - because hey, it's nbd right. No. It is not actually okay. While my allergy is not life threatening, it's still pretty bad. It's not fun that to save yourself a two minute phone call you've ruined my next couple days. So yeah, I will not be ordering or visiting your location again. read more

There are 5 people standing around behind the counter. I was the only person in line and it took over 10 minutes to make a pumpkin cream cold brew. You would think a drink that takes 10 minutes to make would be perfect, but it was terrible. A bad mistake to waste my time and money stopping by this location to get a drink I usually love and get on a daily basis. The pumpkin cream was diluted down (very watery) and the cold brew didn't have the vanilla syrup. The employees here had very little attention to detail, lack of urgency, and bad attitude. read more

I wanted to try out a new Starbucks location to work from because I've passed by this location a million times and seemed like there was plenty of places to sit. Upon arrival, I found a huge line and also way more chairs then there were available table spots. Determined to give it a try anyway, I waited in the super long line to be disappointed. My hazelnut latte was actually quite bitter and the whole experience too way too long. The cashier was slow and easily distracted and the barista took his time as well. I'm rarely disappointed with Starbucks, but this was really a letdown. It would have taken way too long to return my latte and have it remade so I just dealt with it and the winding minefield of chairs. On the bright side there's lots of chairs but you'll have to ask to share a table to really make use of it and their parking lot is super tight. Convenient Starbucks location on El Camino Real in San Mateo. Perfect place to stop after dropping our grandchildren at school. Very small parking lot that you must enter from 17th Avenue and exit onto El Camino. There is street parking, too, that is convenient. I can pick up a San Francisco Chronicle, get a tall coffee, order an apple fritter, and spend the next hour just hanging out, reading, eating, and watching the traffic. Lots of tables, including a couple of communal tables where people are quite happy to share the space. read more

Horrific. The line wraps around the building and the cashiers are sooooo slow. Just give me my cup and I'll write it on my own. But to be fair, she was nice. Just completely flustered, I can live with that. But to wait in line for 15 mins was a little much. The barista on my most recent visit was a total pain the butt. I ordered 2 drinks, and he hands me one after 10 mins and the other one 5 minutes later after 10 customers went by. He looked pissed and uninterested in working there. There was syrup all over the outside of my cup and it was only 3/4 of the way filled! I didn't bother complaining because he looked like he would probably spit in my drink. This is the second time in a row this Starbucks messes up my order. I personally don't drink coffee but I go pick up for my girlfriend when she works and today I went and I literally repeated myself more than 3 times and it wasn't until I got home that my girlfriend said it was wrong cuz I personally don't know how it's supposed to look. These are undesirable adjectives for the product, service & experience expected of the cafe where we proudly buy our grossly overpriced morning coffee [I refer you to 'The Lego Movie.'] Our at least-daily pilgrimages to our favorite coffee drink-dispensing chains, ingeniously implanted in us by marketers expert in the latest neuropsychological behavior modification techniques, and ingrained as habits by status (ego) & peer pressure (fear), fuel our caffeinated lemming parades. The ringing registers and flow of beverages depend on quick and reliable transactions. Process flow here at 17th & El Camino Real is far from robust, with little spare capacity, parallelism, or apparently even cross training. Even an occasional customer forgetting his payment card, or a rare fulfillment error, throws a wrench in the gears which brings the line to a halt and starts the lemmings a-grumbling. Case in point : Today I, yes eye, was that guy who left his iPhone with its Starbucks payment app in the car. (I know, right? Can you believe it? I still can't.) I apologetically rushed out to retrieve said sole payment means. Upon my return the cashier was still working to "save" my 1-drink order while I waited. Then she proceeded to help the next customer, who happened to have a long order list for the office. Okay, fair enough, sentence passed & fine paid for my oversight. Order taken (tried the NEW S'more Frap w/o whip) & paid for ( $5 + tip for a Grande/medium? Yowza! No wonder I usually stick to drip), I waited until my drink appeared in turn. [N.B. Labeling items as "NEW" is a proven method of increasing sales, even on a known mature product.] It looked like a big frothy thing, as expected for something with a hokey fake Italian-sounding name like Frappuccino. Only after I'd finished most of it did I notice that Something Was Rotten in San Mateo. Most of the drink was (real) whipped cream! But I ordered mine sans cream, and the cashier properly documented my request on the cup (shown in the photos for this store). Argggggh! Did I piss and moan to the barista or the supervisor? No. Why not? If you occupy a seat here for any length of time, you'll observe dozens of customers being dissed identically. The baristas literally DON'T CARE what's written on the cup! The cashier's Sharpie may as well engrave a column of Question Marks on the ordering boxes, because the people making the drinks are likely gonna freewheel it and mix up what they damn well please! And that's the opposite of Regular, Dependable, Predictable. It's Chaos, I say. So why 2 stars? That $5 S'more was tasty! read more

The AM shift is great, works well under pressure. I was in this morning and the store was packed with people impatiently waiting and complaining. I watched this one lady complain about how she is going to be late for work, seriously! Well leave and stop ruing everyone's morning! I stood back and waited for my name to be called and as my name was called, I was tempted to tell them to just turn off mobile ordering so that they can catch up. I look at them with dismay since i find it highly unlikely for someone with my same name and phone number picked up my ordered. This Starbucks is on par with any other Starbucks. I usually won't give a Starbucks a low rating except here the parking lot is an accident waiting to happen. Space is so tight, lane is narrow and it only goes one way. Entry to the parking lot is on a side street in the back and you are forced to make a right turn on El Camino Real when you exit. read more

As a big Starbucks drinker both during work and personal hours, and a coffee fanatic in general, I find our local El Camino Starbucks to be great for the following: - Super buy on the go AM's require quick, delicious, and consistent coffee and service. I have always had this when arriving at this location. - Their Barista named Olivia KILLS IT with her speed, her efficiency, her cleanliness we all see her promoting behind the counter, I'm happier knowing she is behind the counter because it means our drinks all come out quicker. I love & appreciate her HUSTLE! - The Team is always upbeat and helpful. - Drinks are consistent day-over-day, which is reassuring. - The speed of the line is 5x what other Starbucks lines operate at.
