What a lovely place. Just a mile and a half away from JW Marriott. We stayed for a week and enjoyed it very much. Super clean with friendly staff. On site there is one restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. For breakfast we walked to JW Marriott to their Signature Grill which opens at 6:30 daily. It's a short drive away from downtown if you want to venture out, which we did quite a bit. It's an excellent place for golfers and since we don't golf we enjoyed hikes in the area. There is a shuttle running between the two hotels if you don't feel like walking much or if it's too hot out. We enjoyed their gym, pool and the hot tub. There is a tennis court on site as well, but we didn't use. The territory is very clean and groomed. read more

This low-key resort was exactly what we needed for a two night getaway. The reception staff were very welcoming, check-in was seamless, we had the pool and fitness room all to ourselves on the afternoon of checkin. The rooms are a little bit dated, but comfortable and clean. Definitely recommend! read more

Thank you for response from day one where we talked about killing a scorpion in the closet and the thin walls being able to here the neighbor talk on his cell phone. High notes have been the kind staff. its now day 2 and my wife got stung by a scorpion last night while sleeping in the bed. She got very little sleep because she was afraid she would get stomg again Yes the staff was nice and is sending out someone to spray the room. We did ask for house keeping thinking maybe that would help too but understand we would have to stay a minimum of 14 days before we can get that. We do appreciate the towel change out although. read more

We stayed here a week in a studio. Room was very clean and comfortable. Staff responsive and nice.

We booked this hotel three months in advance for parents weekend at the U of A. Three weeks before the reservation, when all hotel were sold out across the city, the hotel canceled our reservation. First, they told a lie and said that rooms were being renovated. Then, when we complained, they admitted they were "overbooked." Then, when pressed, they admitted they were instructed to drop all reservations made at a certain price point - they knew what demand was and could get more money. Hot, Dry, and designed to make you spend money! From the $170 massage to renting a mountain bike for a couple of hours at $60, this is no resort, it's a money pit!! The rooms are nice, and quite spacious. The ac never stopped running at 72°. My room had both the shower and bathtub separately, and the showerhead nice pressure, although there's still the flow regulator issue on all new shower heads. Lots of free stuff, more cotton balls than one person could use, single serving qtips. Mini fridge is a plus. What is "Mountain View" ? My room was said to have a Mountain View, but it's more like a cactus covered Hill. You look down at the parking lot mostly. Everything has a surcharge. From a bottle of Coca Cola to breakfast, you're going to pay through the nose for creature comforts. Let's talk about food for a moment. There's three restaurants, really expensive, kind of expensive, and then an offsite kind of moderate. If you want to go to the offsite you can hop on a free shuttle bus and they will take you there and back. Unfortunately it closes at night. So that leaves you with the two restaurants on site. Primo. Meh. Signatures. Meh. With the sound of jet fighters and helicopters roaring overhead, and $15 for a cocktail, the view is nice, and they try to make it nice, but the prices are a little insulting. The Internet is free... at least it says it is but it's tricky. Watch out for the deceptive pay marketing. Overall I'm really confused why anyone would host a conference here, let alone stay here. At roughly $250 a night you're getting ripped off. The massage should be $60. The bikes should be free or maybe $10 per day. Instead you're nickel and dimed in this hot and dry desert oasis, quite unfairly imo. Overall, if the conference was not here, I would never come here. They don't even have an airport shuttle! read more

The area looks and feels nice and the Casitas are cute. Now here's why three stars... Not going to waste anymore of my precious time detailing everything about our experience, but suffice it to say, we spent hours, days and weeks on end with the ball left in our court to get a refund that we were promised due to bad service. Overpromised and underdelivered we were, as the beds were not Tempur-pedic as promised, and the hot potato was passed back-and-forth between star pass, and Expedia as to who was responsible for making it right with us. One of the managers was nice and helpful and also one of the employees but not the other one. We also couldn't get extra pillows. that were needed for a comfortable sleep and we're left with one pillow per bed which is unacceptable and does not match the photos. The main thing here is we had to work work work work for hours on the phone weeks of waiting to finally get just a small portion of our stay refunded, and that should've been taken care of not by us but the ball should've been out of our hands after the grief we went through and time spent explaining and talking to managers, etc. while we were trying to visit family in peace. Please ignore the cookie cutter response that may follow this as it is insulting and deceptive to act like you're helping when you already didn't and had the opportunity. I gave the three stars, so do not offer to have us call again as for sure we will not lol. If you say call this number and will be happy to help further, you are adding further insult to injury and I will reduce the stars for 3 to 2 if this is your response. Will not recommend nor be staying here again. read more

SUPER DISAPPOINTING, especially at an aggregate rate of $300+ a night for our studio. We are here for 5 nights, the room came stocked with : 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 wash cloths, 1 bath mat, 2 weak/flavorless bags of lousy coffee. The hairdryer cord is 3' long at best. I had to dry my hair hunched over. The refrigerator did not keep cold and when i went to open and eat leftovers a few hours later the smell was awful. Had to throw it all away. No ice machines on premise. No coffee on premise for purchase, not even in the club house for golfers. There is no clubhouse with any incidental snacks, not even a vending machine. The only positive is that you are in a very pretty part of Tucson. read more

To start, here's my complaint and why I'm writing my first ever review. "Win" the employee at the pro shop, was rude, disrespectful, money grabbing, and more. We paid $170 and change for 9 holes of golf and he wouldn't let us use the driving range, overcharged us compared to the rate we locked in online, spoke back to us in a redundant manner when we asked or stated polite things. He should be unemployed or working at the local McDonald's. The gentleman at the start of the Coyote course was lovely, personable, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with. The course was great, maybe not $170 great, but overall I recommend. Just not when win is working. read more

We arrived at 4:00pm to check in for our reserved two-night stay, but were told there were no casitas available yet. We came back at 5:00 and were told that if we wanted a unit with a city view and balcony as we had requested, two months earlier, we must wait another 10 to 15 minutes. We decided to wait. It was another half hour before being given our key cards and unit number. When we drove to our unit we found it was not a city view unit, it had a view of a street and a low hill. There was no balcony. We were so tired and had waited so long, we didn't drive back to complain. The unit was dated, but not without charm. The next morning, about 6:30am, the fire alarm went off. And alarming is the right word - we leapt out of bed. The alarm screeches very loudly and a voice shouts FIRE, more screeches, more FIRE! until it suddenly went quiet. We started searching for a fire; we even went outside. No fire. We reported this to the office and they apologized and said they would send someone to check our alarm. Unfortunately, the next morning it did the same thing at an even earlier time! We were in town for the gem shows and they do not open until ten am. We had looked forward to sleeping-in on this trip, but you are up for the day when you have this type of wake-up. We reported the second alarm when we checked out and got the same response - an apology and assurance they would check this out. Another minor issue - the heater is quite loud when it comes on in the night. We finally turned the heat off. One other problem, we found that unless you were very careful when showering, the hot water could be scalding. There was a only a short turn from tepid to scalding. Watch out! We found our stay was not as pleasant as we had hoped, and not as pleasant as our previous stays. This was mostly because of the alarms in the early hours. The grounds are beautiful, the casita was wonderfully clean, the kitchen had everything we needed, but the whole point of hotels is to have a place to sleep. I doubt we will stay there again. read more

Great location! Beautiful resort grounds. Highly recommend the melt in your mouth brisket at Catalina BBQ! And the onion rings, and the salmon, and ....! Great drinks and atmosphere at Signature Bar. Far enough out of city for some peace & quiet but close enough for Tucson's Downtown, Westside, & Southside dining. Affordable stay that had a number of amenities including a pool, small back patio open to desert, an in-unit washer and dryer, refrigerator, and full kitchen to include plateware and silverware as well as some to go containers. Parking is close to units as to accommodate a close walk. Our unit was a 1 bedroom with king size bed, large sofa couch in living room, 2 TVs, a full size bathroom with a separate tub and dual vanity sink. read more

I would have given them 1 star but being close to JWMarriott made up for the 1970s broke down studio we got for our 5 year anniversary with a non draining tub, pink decor and two towels for our entire weekend stay. Then Amika told me I could keep the Tucson where-traveler book when I called only to change her mind at checkout and tell me I'd be charged. The only thing good about this place is the Catalina Cantina where the wings are awesome and the Brisket melts in your mouth. Otherwise I would tell anyone that staying here is equivalent to having a 1970s motel 6 room with no access to outside from the studio. At check in I advised the desk staff that we requested an upgrade and it was our 5 year wedding Anniversary. He told me we received a remodeled room. Nestled in the hills above Tucson This beautiful resort has so much to offer for a great family vacation (Hiking, Golf, Pool, Exercise room, Cycling & a nice Mexican Themed Bar & Grille). The rooms are large 1 & 2 bedroom casitas most with awesome views of Tucson at night. They all have small patios & a fireplace that burn real wood. A lot to see & do in the area.. minutes to the 10-fwy and about an hour to Tombstone or Nogales Mexico down the 19-fwy. We have stayed here several times & have found the staff very friendly. For those that golf.. they have one of the nicest around. Now the Negatives.. they do not have Wi-Fi so we could not use all our devices. I hope they work on that as it would not be much trouble or expense with today's technology. They do however have a hardline you can plug into by the phone that is if you have a device with an Ethernet port. The rooms while nice with beautiful views are getting worn out (carpet furniture etc). Loved the Balcony.. did not like all the chipping paint. on the railing & exterior of building. With a little attention this could be a 5-star property. read more

A cozy little secret place to please the golf enthusiast and the sun worshiper alike. With spectacular vista views varying in vegetation sculpted for the visitation of a variety of wild life, this semi rugged southwestern hideaway deserves more visitors of the human kind. Virtually the best value in the area with regards to room rates. I for one am shocked that it's clientele seemed lean mid February. There is some sort of alliance between Marriott and seemingly several smaller vendors in the running of the place, and by no means should you come here expecting a trendy, sophistication typical of what I normally rate a 4 star property but this place automatically gets two stars because of its service and care shown by each person I ran into. There is an observatory nearby from which you can view on so many a clear night in Arizona, a billion stars dancing all around and above you. For this reason, don't complain if you cannot find your suite assigned to you should you arrive after sunset! read more

Excellent golfing experience Starr Pass is a beautiful course overlooking Tucson, located at the foothills of a small cluster of mountains. The views are great and the course is in superb shape. The course is also kind in that you can shoot a reasonable score if you are careful to stick with the fairways. Going for it cost me a few strokes, as did ms-reading the speed of the greens. Cart staff were expecially nice. The havelinas, coyotes, snake, and bee hive were cool to see along the way. They made for good company. Cons: Greens were a bit soggy on some holes, leading to short putts, as well as approach shots that just stuck after leaving comet-like divots. Driving range is a makeshift area. Practice green is small. read more

Im not sure why all the bad reviews. Just stayed here for a few days and loved it. I did not get a newly renovated room, and actually glad i didnt. I loved the decor! The living room and dining area were a good size. The couch was very comfortable! The kids had no problem sleeping on the fold out bed. They provide bedding for it as well. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook our meals here. Huge fridge, dishwasher and laundry room. The patio was a decent size with table and chairs and an awesome view. The bathroom is outdated for sure but huge! The bedroom was a good size and the bed was so comfortable! Lots of pillows as well! The grounds are very well taken care of. The pool was a little crowded but had a nice picnic area i hung out and enjoyed the people watching. Staff was all great! The restaurant is a little expensive for what you get but was tasty. I have nothing negative to say. As far as the person complaining about the crowd that is there... I'm not sure where they are from and it may not attract the high class clientele they view themselves as... but for us peasants it was just fine! I will definitely be back! read more

We were disappointed in the room. My husband and I checked in this afternoon and asked if the rooms had been renovated. They told us half of them had been, and if we wanted to stay in one it would be a $30 extra charge The room they gave us was the smaller sized room of a time share suite with no view. We assumed not only would it be renovated but the larger part of the suite. We called the front desk and they told us we paid for a renovated small room. The front desk person told us she would remove the extra charge, then called us back and said they would be charging us! It just doesn't seem right to charge extra for a room which, while clean and fresh paint is mediocre at best. This is the low season and the property is half full. We won't be coming back. read more

Horrible experience! Do not stay here! We are Shell Vacation owners and we were treated like crap! We had reserved 3 weeks in advance personally in office asking for a view. We arrived early about 1 pm and made a reservation for pool time the next day. We were given a ticket with our room number and were told that none of the rooms were ready. So we came back 2 hours later and still told it was not ready. In the meantime we saw 2 other guests receive their keys. When we asked again we were given a different room looking at the parking lot.when we complained they said there were not any other rooms.Horrible customer service. Shame on you Shell Vacations! BEAUTIFUL location. This place must have been something really stunning 25 years ago. Externally the property is well maintained. Property is meticulously groomed. Inside, the best explanation I can provide is TIRED. A good ten years past the prime. Terribly in need of a refresh. Worst feature is NO WIRELESS - are you kidding me. You want people to spend a week here and be tethered to an 18" ethernet cable on the kitchen wall? If anyone in management paid any attention, this place could still be something special. Wake up Shell!!!! Another complaint - signage is HORRIBLE. We arrived at night and it was next to impossible to find anything. Another things that Shell could fix if they wanted to. Not likely to come back here - there are just too many other places in the area that have better features. read more

Lovely location, wildlife everywhere, gorgeous walking paths...sadly you can't walk them at night because the lights are burned out on most paths and overhead street lamps. RUN, don't walk, for the hills! This is NOT a hotel. It is a group of timeshares that are rented out. Very dated rooms. Tiny TV. No front desk from 12 - 5 am. Tiny pillows. No comforter on bed, just a thin blanket. Paper thin walls so you can hear your neighbor's TV, and every cough and sneeze...and I pray that they don't do anything louder than that tonight. Barely any signage so good luck finding it at night. Front desk unable to make change. Horrible customer service. No housekeeping for a week. The restaurant on site looked OK...I should have brought my pillow and rented a table for a week there instead. Basically this place is a Motel 6 with a golf course. Do yourself a favor. Stay at the JW Marriott up the road. It's 100 times better for the same price. read more

There is little privacy in these rooms as absolutely everything can be heard through the walls. Sleep was hard to come by as we listened to our neighbors television late at night and early in the morning. For the price, the property offers more than the room. Got a remarkable off season deal on Priceline.com. Beautiful location / setting in the foothills west of the city. Very nice pool and spa facilities. The room was smaller than expected but had a terrific view of the city and the beds were made of something similar to memory foam. Biggest complaint was the noise of the a/c unit which wheezed and clanked throughout the summer night. If you can get a good price, go for it. read more

I stayed at the JW Marriott and got to use the Driving Range for free with free Callaway clubs. I was super excited as it's usually $25 for the driving range. I stayed here on an impromptu trip and didn't bring any clubs or clothes. Luckily, they let me onto the range in a dress and flip flops so I got to enjoy it! There's 3 9 hole courses. The grass must be more difficult to maintain given the heat but they do a pretty good job! The view is amazing and it's a nice getaway. read more

The setting is beautiful and secluded, and the mattresses are Tempurpedic (yeah I checked and now I want one).... Those were the good parts. If you're looking to be isolated and catch a coyote sighting in the parking lot, this is it. Extra star for all of the above. As for the rooms, unimpressive and very dated. I cancelled the reservation about 5 minutes after checking in due to dissatisfaction. The front desk attendant told me that I needed to cancel through booking.com and that she was unable to give us any information because we did not book directly through the resort. However, booking.com is stating that the cancellation policies are at the resort's prerogative. While I was prepared to pay a fee for cancellation, I was charged the full $236.96 by the resort on May 30th. Since the end of May, I have emailed Starr Pass and called multiple times to discuss this. I have not received a single response via email. When I call, the attendant states I must speak with a manager so I end up leaving my information to receive a call back and still have not been contacted. read more

Nice location among the mountains in west Tucson. Decent pool/tennis/workout area and there are some fantastic trails to run or mountain bike to the Southwest of the facility. Ate dinner on site and it was worth the money, they have a happy hour with $3 beer and 1/2 price appetizers, cant beat it. WiFI only in certain areas which was a bummer. Rooms are Southwestern and nicely decorated. Gas stove and full size refrigerators were a nice touch. Laundry in the storage room was also a plus when washing dirty soccer clothes for the next day. This place is quiet and secluded, exactly what we needed. read more

I have stayed at many of Shell Vacations Resorts as an owner. I have given all other locations 5 stars and hoped for the same here. However, when I arrived the room I was assigned to was already occupied by another family (that was embarrassing). Then the second night when we returned from a long day of sight seeing our keys didn't work and we had to wait for over 10 minutes for someone to come help us. read more

I have a lot of pros and cons for this resort so to be fair I am going the break them down. Pros: it is a lovely location. Lots of wild life, i spotted quails, baby Javelinas, and tons of lizards. Mary who answered my call at 5:30 AM was a delight and the sweetest lady, she is a problem solver and takes action. She is the only reason I didn't cut my vacation short and not even make it through one night. (Give that girl a raise) everyone I speak to is polite, the rooms are large and have good space. Kitchen is fully equip which is nice for cooking. Bed is very cozy. Cons: it was hard to find the room, area is not well lit and could use clearer signage. Its outdated, they don't have wifi in the rooms, so i spent most of my first day tethered to an ethernet cable (because I had work to do) at a kitchen bar area on a uncomfortable metal stool, while gazing longingly at the nice dining table, cozy chair and couch I could not reach. The room was also 81 degrees and wouldn't get colder. My main issue was a really noisy AC unit that startled me awake every time it kicked on. It was so loud I couldn't hear the TV. It was also very stuffy and warm. So I called at 1:15 AM and to their credit they offered the emergency on call maintenance man, if he couldn't fix it we could change rooms in the morning. Since the relief of a cooler quieter room wasn't an option until morning anyway, I decided couldn't handle the thought of ac repair at 2 AM. They let me know someone would be in at 5 AM that could assist. so I ok'ed just calling them after 5AM for resolution. I was also thinking just going home early as an option after I concluded business on saturday. I called Mary at 5:21 AM who offered a new room right away. The new room AC was less noisy, still outdated and still the ethernet tether, but at least I could sleep enough to be pleasant to people. They didn't offer assistance with luggage to the new room, but Mary did follow up and wished me good sleep. It wasn't far, I was just exhausted. I had to skip my morning breakfast and zoo plans to squeeze in some sleep. That was disappointing. Humorous: Vanity mirror in bathroom is set at 6' feet high on the wall. I had to stand on a chair to use it. Im pretty sure average women's height is NOT 6 feet, unless you live in Wisconsin. Overall its ok. I don't know that I would be back. I do business in Tucson quite a bit and I am an avid golfer, so that is disappointing as the location is lovely. read more

Pros, Cons, then summary. I just got back from Starr Pass, so I can give a good update on the facility. I went here with my family and spent about 1 week here in a 1 BR. PROs--Price. Going here in the summer is always cheap, and cheaper than most places in this area. You get bang for your buck because I rented a 1 BR, which is like an apartment and not like a small hotel room. The pool is essentially olympic size, which is great and plenty of room for everybody. It is out-of-the-way, and no really traffic issues. The place is quiet too. A/C was nice and cold. They DO have WiFi now, and it's free for the basic 4 device package. Tempur-Pedic King size bed in 1 BR!!! Very nice and also had memory foam pillows. TVs are updated flat screens (LG), and the room has a good fridge and kitchen. (Studios may be smaller) While no bottles are allowed in the pool area, they do allow beer....which is a plus because I know of plenty of places that don't these days. All the workers I came in contact with were nice too. I know it's a personal preference, but I'd much rather rent a nice apartment for cheap, than an expensive hotel room like at JW. Why would I want a smaller place that's more expensive? CONs--No grills! Come on man....when I go on vacation I want to BBQ and drink beer. Parking was terrible for our room. We had to park in a lot behind our building, then walk all the way around the building to the front door. Bad planning. No free weights in the workout room either, those should be cheap. Bedroom had only one comforter and no blanket. While we could have had a great view, there was a big floodlight on top of the parking structure that just ruined our view of the city *We did not use their restaurant, so I can't review that. **My wife lived in Tucson for several years, so let me mention the lighting issues others have brought up. Yes, the area is very dark, however that is a strict city ordinance. The Tucson area has a few observatories, so there are strict citywide (and county for that matter) rules on the amount and types of streetlights that can be used. Would I go back? Yes, it is cheap and an overall nice place. read more
