My daughter and I decided to try the Cafe because it was close by. It wasn't too busy and our Server was super friendly and it didn't take long to get our order. Daughter got an omelette I ordered the tacos. I'm not real sure what the meat was in the tacos but I don't think it was ground beef. Greasy spoon with some local color arguing in the kitchen. Don't mind the giant centipedes falling from the ceiling. It's also cash only. I've known that for years, but at this point if your running a cash only restaurant you're either dodging taxes or 108. Every time I eat here I question why I didn't just make my own eggs and bacon. Been coming to canyon lake to fish, swim and camp my whole life and have never tried this place before. Finally did this morning and now I just feel awful for never noticing it before! It was sooo good! Atmosphere is very laid back and family casual like Jim's or Cracker Barrel would be. They were playing classic country as well. The food came out about 20 minutes after sitting down and having our order taken. Price I though was well worth it for food quality, taste and portion. Friendly and caring waitress too! Needless to say, I Highly recommend this place and we'll be stopping from now on when we're here! (I had the French toast plate and my boyfriend had the country fried steak breakfast plate for reference) My single only complaint is in the bathroom, there's 2 toilet's separated with a wall but shower curtains are in place of doors. Made it difficult to use the bathroom without the anxiety of someone coming in and ripping the curtain open lol. Not enough to take the rating down from 5 stars and won't stop us from going back but thought it was something worth mentioning. read more

There are definitely two different experiences to expect here-if you're a regular, you will probably be greeted nicely and served promptly. However, if you're clearly "not from here", don't expect to be acknowledged, and you're going to wait awhile for possibly the worst food you've ever encountered. My husband and I came to check it out for breakfast on a Sunday morning. It's been around since 1946 so we wanted to experience a small town, well know cafe. HA. The first red flag was that our orange juice was served with ice cubes-do people really drink it that way? We then proceeded to wait for 45 minutes for scrambled eggs, hash browns, a biscuit and bacon (for me) and two breakfast tacos (for him). At no point did our server ever come back to check on us, but she did spend a lot of time talking to the regulars. We watched several tables get served before us that had come in after us. When our food finally came, the eggs were hard as a rock, the bacon and hash browns were raw and the biscuit was so hard and dry you could use it to brick up a wall. My husband's breakfast tacos were filled with a mystery meat and orange cheese. We tried to flag down our server to get the check-no luck. Thankfully we were able to get their menu on our phones, figure out the check and left cash on the table-they don't take credit cards either. As we walked out the door, we heard a loud "THANK YOU"-the only time we were addressed. I have no earthly idea what food the people who gave this place a positive review were eating-maybe they're used to eating prison food because that's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with. The unusual thing is that this is like other places that I have visited, when observing it from the outside it does not seem to be a Cafe. First I tell you that you must bring cash to pay, because they do not use the ATH system, but for convenience there is an ATH in a corner outside the Café, but do not worry about the bill, the prices are very reasonable, I would even say That very economical, the attention was spectacular and the food very good. Both breakfasts were served in an astonishingly short time, so if the breakfast does not add salt, you serve the salt to taste, I only comment that the egg and potatoes for me was excellent. I really enjoyed my breakfast. I have to go back to try the lunches or who knows what else, but I'll be back. Homestyle neighborhood spot located downtown perfect for breakfast or lunch while you're at the lake. They're cash only so be prepared for that. Everything we had was great and the littles LOVED the bacon and that they could have chips and queso for breakfast! The adults at the table loved the fresh veggie omelets and bottomless coffee! 2/28/20 Got here right at 4:00, just in time for the special of the day - catfish! However, the rest of the menu was too good to settle, so I opted for a massive patty melt and she had an equally massive mushroom Swiss burger. One of their signs said "The deadline for complaints was yesterday ". Good thing we did not have anything to complain about! Great food! Yes, the restrooms need some TLC, and the place doesn't look like much from the outside. However, we are big fan's of William Trogdon's book "Blue Highways", so that's not what you judge a place by. If the parking lot needs TLC too, but there's a bunch of cars there, that's the place to eat! You can't go wrong at this little gem. read more

Not the cleanest place on the outside, but the inside was clean and nostalgic. The bathrooms could use some help, however when looking at the prices. I came on a Tuesday morning in July. I was looking for a country diner for breakfast. I didn't want to drive all the way to New Braunfels, so I decided to try this place. I had a hard time finding the font of this place and parking is a little tricky. It was not crowded, the staff was very friendly, and the breakfast was very substantial. My parents just bought a house in Canyon Lake, so we ventured there this past weekend. Startz Cafe was on my list of things to do because the ratings were so awesome for what seemed like such a "hole in the wall" type place! But, that is exactly what it is. A hidden treasure, to say the least. Saturday morning at 9AM, the place was pretty slow - not busy at all. However, the longer we stayed, the busier it got. Our waitress was awesome, extremely friendly and awesome with our kiddos. Without request, she even got our kids orders out immediately after we ordered them, so they didn't have to wait for their food! We appreciated that! On to the food, it was absolutely delicious. Decided to drop in here for lunch today. I guessed it was busy by all the cars parked outside. Usually a good sign. All tables were either occupied of vacant with leftover dishes still there. I chose an unclean table and decided to just wait, they'd get to it. After a while I placed by order and began waiting, and waiting and waiting and nothing ever came out of the kitchen for me. Services was tied up at the cash register so she didn't have time to check on it. I waited a longer, and after spending nearly an hour waiting for nothing, I gave up and left. The hubby swung by one Saturday morning, hoping that we stumbled upon a gem in the Canyon Lake area. While the service was top notch and the food came out quickly, the quality of the food left some to be desired. I ordered the Guillermo's Huevos the Ranger Way. The eggs, covered with cheese and bacon were quite good, but the hash browns were not warm, flavorful or crispy. The hubby ordered the Country Steak and Eggs. His meal was pretty good, but with the speed in which the meal came out, combined with the familiar flavor of frozen country fried steak, we were pretty sure it was pre-made. You know the old saying, "Fool me once Shame on You, Fool me twice Shame on Me". My first experience here a few months ago was disappointing to say the least (unfriendly waitress, long wait for the food even though it wasn't busy, etc) but I decided to give them another try. Well, shame on me because my experience was not any better this time. My waitress acted as if she was having a bad day and absolutely had no interest in being at work (If you dislike your job then work somewhere else.). Only 3 tables with customers so not busy but service was slow and my waitress was cranky. The food was bland (1 star rating) but as least my drink was cold and refreshing until I drank it all and waited forever for a refill due to the waitresses standing around chatting with each other for long periods of time. I know people are human and can have a bad day but to experience the same cranky, rude behavior here twice on 2 separate visits makes it appear that this is the norm at this joint. read more

We are so lucky to have this historic cafe in Canyon Lake. The people are friendly, the atmosphere is the Hill Country at its best. We stopped in for lunch and ordered breakfast and chicken fried steak. The breakfast was such a disappointment! The eggs were singed, the grits were lumpy and had no flavor, the bacon was greasy and the biscuit was hard and brown! What happened? The chiicken fried steak was good. One of the best BLT's I have ever had, lots of crispy bacon. Burgers are great too but they put mustard on them, which it does not say on the menu, so be sure to ask accordingly. At times service could be a little faster but the staff is always warm and friendly. Love the old juke box and pool table. They help keep the kids entertained while waiting for food. Great relaxing down home atmosphere. But they need to serve sweet tea! read more

Just moved to Canyon Lake and wanted somewhere good for breakfast. Thankfully we came here because everyone was very happy with their food. Wait staff is very friendly and attentive. It's a Texas landmark and it's interesting to read its history. Tables are well spread apart so no one is on top of each other. Menu has a variety of different foods and prices are very reasonable. Cafe dining at its finest!! We were driving around looking for breakfast, never dreamed we'd find this gem!!! What a happy accident / gamble!! First, the place looks awesome from the outside. I love the old stone buildings! You walk inside and it's old school cafe, and I love that. Self seating, and not sitting long when a kind young man came and waited on us! You can have beer if you like ($2.50 for Domestics - Like my favorite Lone Star) but we opted for a soda for him, and unsweet tea for me. Tea was fresh and tasted great, so I suspected the food would be great as well. Husband ordered chicken fried steak with jalapenos, gravy, hashbrowns, eggs, and toast. It was excellent! I had a BLT on sourdough and home fries - also excellent!! Saw a burger in passing that I nearly grabbed and ran out the door with, it looked great!!
