I'm new to the area and wanted to find a good place for breakfast. This place came up on my search and had pretty good reviews, so I thought id try it out. The first time I went was a weekday and there was ample seating and no wait. Service was quick and friendly. I tried their biscuits and gravy and some hash browns and it reminds me of the diners I went to as a kid. They have a rustic hole in the wall feel, and everything is so nice and helpful. PORTIONS! TX sized home style cooking. The 18" pancakes are 2 inches thick. You'll take a picture. I got biscuits and sausage gravy and added 2 extra patties. Applause! There was enough thick gravy to cover all of it. Thumbs up on hash browns and raspberry jam. The 20 minute wait was worth it. Food arrived on time even for a large group of 10. Our waitress was great. We tipped well. Exiting, A guy said he was picking up catfish to go. He orders often and recommends. I saw assorted cakes and pies in to go frig behind the register and "I Love Pancakes" shirts for sale. The clerk said the joint was 15 years old. Nuh-uh. Hands down, best pancake I've ever eaten in my life. It's like a two-inch-thick breakfast fever dream. I got the egg and pancake plate with a biscuit on the side. The coffee was hot, frequently refreshed by the kind waitress, but not very tasty the day I went. The biscuit was literal perfection-- incredibly tender, piping hot and came with a homemade lil cup of jam of some kind. I would pay like $10 for that biscuit alone. The scrambled eggs were kind of bland, and the home fries (skillet potatoes) were dripping with oil, the flavor of which was very strange and I couldn't eat more than two bites. My friends didn't have a problem with it though. Walking into Granny D's is like walking into southern down home country breakfast heaven. I ate off that one pancake for two days. Whoweeee! We were passing by the area looking for a nice local place to stop for breakfast. What a surprise! This was easily THE best place we stopped for breakfast after being on the road for two weeks! The pancake was light and fluffy and bursting with flavor- not flat like many others. This diner is Very old school and is inside a manufactured building and has a Divey vibe. It took over 30 minutes to get our food and my eggs were cold. The potatoes we asked for were home fries and they gave us hash browns instead. When I asked the server about it she said oh yeah we ran out I forgot to tell you. ??? The proper thing would have been to tell us cause I would have chosen fries instead. My son and hubby enjoyed their meals however. My meal was ok.. nothing to brag about. The scenic road near this place was my main attraction there. The food was good, what you would expect at this type of old school dinner. The pancakes were huge and very photogenic with that being said I expected them to be raw in the middle and I was right... but not disappointed I understand how hard they must be to fully cook without burning when they are that huge. Parking was a small nightmare and severs looked like they were stressed. Ours forgot drink refills and drink order at the table next to us. But overall will come back, one thing though, make sure to keep an eye on what they're charging you. On today's adventure I felt like a good breakfast so I decided on Granny D's. This establishment is in the Canyon Lake area. As you walk in, you notice that there is plenty of seating and are greeted by the hostess and taken to your seat. Depending on the time you go you might wait a while but fortunately I was seated promptly even though it was fairly packed. The server was extremely helpful and polite and took our order quickly. You have a large selection of food options, so depending what you like you'll most likely find here. Now the most important thing the food, the food was extremely delicious. I ordered the Country Scramble it's an egg, cheese and bacon creation and it was amazing. The plate comes with a pancake that was absolutely delicious but it is kinda hard to finish it because it's a good size pancake. This place gives off a good family atmosphere. Today Sunday May 3rd at 12:30pm, had to run some errands near Canyon Lake area and My husband and I decided to eat even though it was packed we knew it was gonna be worth it. Unfortunately that was not the case. Wait time was 10min (no problem) got our table... we waited 25 min to even be looked at to be asked what drinks we would like by a woman we hadn't even seen walking around the dining area. Many servers were busy running orders to other tables but not one asked if we had been helped or bothered to look our direction. When our server did come (nice lady with a couple neck tattoos one that says "Johnny" ) She did not give us her name. We were annoyed but continued to order drinks and food simultaneously because we had so much time to look at the menu... 30 min later as we are still waiting watching the building emptying out, we see a couple that was seated right after us walking away out the door with their To-go boxes. 5 min later another couple that sat down about 15 min AFTER us received their food. There are very few things that I can think of that would excuse that sort of treatment to paying customers. Obviously someone dropped the ball and that sort of thing happens understandably but I would suggest working on your staff communication and teamwork. A gentle reminder to our server that she had people waiting at her table or a simple message to us that they know we are waiting would have been nice to a hungry customer. We were hoping to get our fix seeing how it had been a while since we were able to go in, but instead we walked out angry that there was so many people who were in line behind us already enjoying their food, I was driven out the door by my fuming "Hangriness" and no one told us anything when we were leaving so that shows how much attention they paid to their customers.. We are so excited we got to experience Granny D's while in Canyon Lake. The pancakes were so fluffy and delicious! The kids plate sizes were beyond reasonable and we're happy that the kids weren't hungry immediately after. Toast was a thick Texas sized slice. I had the Reuben Sandwich and hubby had the Club. I recommend the onion rings. They are a good thickness (not too thinly sliced) and the coating has flavor! I was greedy and could not decide if I wanted breakfast or lunch so I also ordered the Cinnamon Toast French Toast too. I barely could take a few bites because the sandwich was so filling. We ordered the kids breakfast for my son with egg, bacon, hash browns and i asked if they would not toast the bread since my son likes it that way. We got there at 10am on Sunday morning and left at 12pm. 20/25 minute wait to seat and about an hour wait from the time we ordered to receive our food. We were looking for a new restaurant to try and thank goodness we drove by Granny D's and decided to stop. The sign says "home cooking" and sure enough it was a very good home made, well seasoned, hot out of the kitchen meals. They have senior plates that are just the right size meals for those of us who don't like to pay for meals we only eat half and leave the rest on the plate. Breakfast is good. Is it wait in line for an hour- no. Pancakes are a little too much for me, we ordered the short stack but they don't give you real butter. The butter makes the experience that much better. They bring you this spread made of oil and it's not good. For those reasons, I don't recommend the short stack. Menu is extensive and you can have breakfast here all day, love that! I settled on a veggie omelet with home fries (red potatoes with garlic, salt and pepper). Hubs ordered the chicken fried steak (large portion) with winter mix veggies (cauliflower and broccoli in garlic and oil) and waffle fries. Prices are very reasonable and portions are generous here! I waited almost an hour for a table for two, the food wait was well over 30 minutes. We traveled from Johnson City because of the rave reviews. I reminded the cashier when we left that of the wait time we endured, but then I reminded her: 1) I would endure (and still do) the miles traveled, the wait for the table, the wait for the food because: A) the food was (and still is) outstanding, real home made and cooked to order B) the wait staff was always moving at warp speed and polite and courteous C) our waitress was unbelievably friendly and attentive - even though she had at least 5 tables packed with customers D) We have (and will continue to) come back many times for the QUALITY food and service. If you're looking for comfort food with generous this is a great place to go. We had lunch items, but watched what others were ordering and the pancakes they brought out were insanely huge. Not dinner plate size - more like pizza pan size! They seemed popular because everyone seemed to have one. Pie also seems to be a favorite. We didn't have room for that because our lunch was also big in portion size. I ordered the Ruben with fries. I could only eat 1/2 and took the rest home. Both were delicious. Happen to come across this place about 1:45 pm up by the dam at Canyon Lake. For your edification they close daily at 2 pm. Staff was nice even though we made them stay over a bit and were pleasant even at the end of a long day for them. It was a quaint building with nothing real special about the decor but that's ok. The food was homemade and fantastic! I had fried catfish with 2 yummy sides (I may just get 2 sides of onion rings next time as they were delicious) and my wife had grilled pork chop off the senior menu with green beans and mashed potatoes.
