It was my first visit and my last. I visited on 4-28-23 Friday at 0900. There was only one waitresses that I saw there. Place was mostly empty. The eggs were dry as were the sausage patties and the biscuit. As horrible as the breakfast was, it didn't compare to the atrocious attitude of the waitresses. Our interaction started out innocently enough, but quickly detiorated. I asked for her name. She replied that her name was Danae, but that I should call her "ma'am". At first I thought she was just joking. However quickly realized she was dead serious. Thereafter, I referred to her as "ma'am". After several times referring to her as "ma'am", she admonished me for calling her "ma'am". When I reminded her that she wanted me to call her ma'am", she replied "yes, but you're emphasizing the word "ma'am". She said this to me in a very snotty way. I told her that in all my years (65 y.o.),I've never had anyone react that way and speak to me in that manner in an hospitality environment. On the contrary. She went to say that she didn't "want anyone to know her name, to know her address or to know anything about" her. I was astonished, embarrassed and offended that she had taken that tone with me. I found it very insulting. Obviously this "ma'am"/Danae has serious mental issues and recommend that she seek psychiatric help. She should not be allowed to interact with the customers whatsoever. For the record, I never asked her where she lived or anything else about her. All I did was ask her name. SMH. What a damn shame. Correction: Waitress. read more

My parents just bought a house in Canyon Lake, so we ventured there this past weekend. Startz Cafe was on my list of things to do because the ratings were so awesome for what seemed like such a "hole in the wall" type place! But, that is exactly what it is. A hidden treasure, to say the least. Saturday morning at 9AM, the place was pretty slow - not busy at all. However, the longer we stayed, the busier it got. Our waitress was awesome, extremely friendly and awesome with our kiddos. Without request, she even got our kids orders out immediately after we ordered them, so they didn't have to wait for their food! We appreciated that! On to the food, it was absolutely delicious. I'm not to sure what most people expect from a small town cafe. I have eaten here my whole life because it's my hometown. I have always loved it, mainly for breakfast. They have a fish fry every Friday, especially during lent if your Catholic. Their burgers are really good to! The staff is always friendly. Its a small place, nothing fancy at all. This place is always packed on weekends with locals and tourist. You can always find people of all different ages there. It's definitely a hole in the wall place but I'll always love it! read more

The two stars are for the young lady who took care of our table. She was nice and did a good job helping us. If it wasn't for her good service I would be giving this place 0 (if Yelp allowed it.) I actually didn't intend to review this place at all because it seems to be an old time Texas classic type of establishment which I understand will have good times and bad times through out its days. I appreciate its historical vibe. HOWEVER I am very sick today after having eaten what I consider to be the worst plate I've ever paid for. I ordered the huevos rancheros and nothing was cooked. Raw tortillas, goopy eggs, hashbrowns were burnt yet some how not cooked through. No flavor besides an odd after taste. After having ate half of my plate I noticed what looked like mold on my eggs which doesn't even make sense unless it came from somewhere else in the kitchen.... my coffee looked like it was brewed early in the morning, had a film over it, was a greyish color and tasted like tap water. My water smelled like a pool. My daughter had the same, and her plate was just like mine. My mother ate a simple breakfast plate and only ate her bacon. My father had a patty melt which he said was decent. It didn't come with a side. We also had fried mushrooms. They were terrible too. I think the canned mushrooms they used were old. I hate to write such a bad review because I myself know what it's like running a restaurant but I truly believe this needs to be done. I hope Startz Cafe gets themselves back together because no doubt it has potential to be an awesome local spot to have breakfast after church etc. I will not be coming back due to being so sick today. read more

Delicious!! The special for lunch comes in 3 sizes. The small was beyond filling for about $6.50 with a tea & fresh cantaloupe included! Yummy pork chop, homemade Mac & cheese, salad with ranch, baked beans was Thursday's special. It was so good we went back for breakfast! Delicious again! I had the Migas & coffee! I came in quietly, on my day off. Headed myself to the most out of the way table I could find, hey spring break ya know? I was treated respectfully. I ordered the migas. With hash browns and a side of refried beans. I AM grateful I found a seat just about 20 min prior the the rush of people charging in. My waitress Angela was amazing, she respected my desire to just sit and chill. Only downside , was a new girl picked up my plate of food when I had to walk outside to accept a very important phone call. They do have wireless service, however I appreciate the fact it doesn't work to well. I have been here about 20 times. Specials are sometimes hard to get, they run out fast. The BBQ Brisket bun is incredible, I thought about licking the plate. The turkey and dressing is great. The chicken fried steak and baked potato are pretty good. Potato comes plain and dry, I thought that was odd I had to ask for cheese. The Ruben and patty melt are fantastic. Fried shrimp is Ok. Tater tots are very good. The salad is great very fresh. And they have very good ranch. Only female staff. They are all very friendly. Stopped for breakfast after church. We did not notice the sign that said cash or check. We ended up having to use the atm out on the corner which costs $5.50 in fees. Came here after fishing on Canyon Lake with my cousin. I pulled up to a somewhat odd parking situation where they won't really any lines and it was kind of a free-for-all. What can you expect. Anyhow I walked in and I was immediately met by Tracy a very sweet waitress there who walked me to the table with sit out and give us the menus. We both ordered the burger with fries. The entire place seems very small town at home kind a deal with the pool table and the boombox playing or jukebox. I was also impressed by how clean it was on the floors in and even in the bathrooms. My burger arrived it was huge and very thick patty with white bread. Very very juicy I thoroughly enjoyed it in the files to a good complement. I would suggest if I'm ever back in the area or if anyone is in the area try this place I promise you won't be disappointed. However for the love of God bring cash, as I forgot. It seems like I'm eating at my Grandmother's house. That is only partly good. Grandma, God bless her, isn't a chef but her food is edible. I imagine my Grandmother has no idea how to make migas and neither does Startz cafe. But their Farmer's omelette is good. The coffee gets a failing grade or worse. It is hot, weak, barely any flavor, and a bad finish. Just awful coffee. Granny Ds has good coffee--I am not a coffee snob and drink cheap coffee black normally. I'm scared a little by what I see in the kitchen. Maybe they comply with the health code--I haven't read it but a lot of stuff is sitting out back there. On two visits the hash browns were undercooked once and uninspiring a second time. Granny Ds down the road has the best hash browns anywhere and Wimberley Cafe up the way has the best migas. Respectfully speaking, the gringa cook here (owner?) should perhaps seek inspiration on her day off from these places. Dicing the vegetables a little smaller would be a good start. And cooking the hash browns until they have a crust is advisable. The next person's hashbrowns I currently see sitting on the griddle in a heap I assume with the heat off. While the "chef" sits at a table in the dining area. The hashbrowns I just ate tasted like they were part of the same soggy heap for an hour or so before I got here. The folks working here are friendly but quickly find themselves in the weeds if the timing of all seven breakfast tables they cover works against them. They only take cash or check. The sign on the door might as well say, "our payment system helps us avoid taxes." It should be viewed as the opposite of hanging an American flag-unpatriotic. But that is only a hunch. I will be back for the same reason this place is just so-so and stays in business. Because there is no competition. read more

Place looks like the type place you would want to find in canyon lake. I live here and have tried it twice. The food has been good , nothing crazy good but it wasnt bad. Waitress seemed more inconvenienced than happy we were there. Example when you go and get breakfast the waitresses normally ask how you want the eggs,meat,hashbrowns ect. She seemed annoyed my wife didnt start rolling through the whole plate...lol my wife said ill take the starz breakfast and after a puase she said AND ? I dont know how you want you eggs ? Small town cafe that has been here since before the was a lake in canyon lake.(that is true) The food is great but not great for you but what the hell you only live once. Our waitress seemed stressed because the place was hopping. Got the fried shrimp with salad and butter beans. Salad was not fancy but fresh and of decent size. The fried shrimp must have been frozen and were a good portion but no better than a fast food place. Waitress forgot the beans but gave me a piece of coconut cream pie on the house to go. Have lived in the area for years and it's been years since stopping in this family owned business. Very casual with large open dining area. Was a Friday night and they were very busy. A duet played original and old country music, which added ambience to the old building. Our server was responsive to our requests even though he appeared to be really busy. Friday nights are fried catfish and he mentioned they usually don't run out so early, but they ran out at 7pm. We were there before 7pm and both husband and I ordered the fried catfish, which came with 2 sides. Catfish had some flavor to it and was a corn meal breading. Fried without being greasy. Portions were moderate, but personally could have eaten more of the catfish. Sides were just sides, nothing special. Overall was pleased with our meal and walked out full. The food was good, the beer was cold, but the service was below average. Our waitress was short, cold and a little rude. She dropped my husbands beer can on the table and walked away mid-sentence when we were talking to her multiple times. She brought our check immediately after we got our food and didn't ask if we wanted anything else, which we did. I would even have been okay if she at least told us "hey, sorry I'm swamped, we're under staffed today..." I'm a pretty understanding person, but she didn't even give us her name. Ok now on to my review. We ate here on a sunday morning to help the recovery of a lake house saturday.. and it did the trick since there were 9 of us. I got to see a wide selection of meals. I had a cheeseburger with onion rings. The patty was handmade, the buns were placed in the burger grease and tasted great.real beef.. I tell you what! The onion rings were perfect, they stayed together and stood a lot of ketchup with just the right crunch. The staff was friendly and everyone of all ages were dancing in their seats to the jukebox. They even invited us back for their St Patty's Day Party.. All in all good experience..Just remember people its a "greasy spoon" so set your expectations accordingly. Ewww!!!! NOT CLEAN!!! Clean up this place and put in a bathroom door and get rid of the ugly shower curtin that is being used as a door! The service i recieved was horrible..the employees were rude and did not look clean. In my opinion this is the worst place i have ever eaten at and will NOT be returning..the food was horrible i got the enciladas that looked like it was a can of alpo with pieces of tortillas in it and they served it cold YUCK!!! My b/f got the burger and lets just say we would of rather eaten off the roach coach truck. A pretty straight forward restaurant with helpful service and a pretty basic breakfast menu. Also went for lunch once but found the food to be lacking flavor. We stopped in to have breakfast & we were never even acknowledged. It was (3) of us (Mexicans-American) & we went in, sat down, waitress brought over glasses of water & menus, didn't say a word to us. A waitress was wiping down a table 2 ft from us and never even looked up at us. We just sat there for about ten minutes & realized we weren't going to be served. It was not crowded at all.
