This hurts me to write this review, especially because this establishment is owned by the same people who own one of our FAVORITE local restaurants, Paper Station Bistro. Our kids stopped in for breakfast a few days ago & said it was ok, but maybe we should try it for dinner, so last night we did. Our other daughter, visiting from downstate had her small dog, and they do have a "dog friendly" outdoor picnic table are, so that worked out ok. In fairness, there was a Help Wanted sign out front, so that may have added to the rather unhelpful attitude of our server. Every question we asked was met with either a "no, we don't have that, or "we can't do that," or something along those lines. Remember the waitress in Five Easy Pieces, who told Jack Nicholson he could not order plain, dry toast? Think that, but younger. She DID sweeten up as we got closer to tip time. Hmmm . . . As for the food, again, we LOVE everything we've ever had at Paper Station. Different chef here who could use some tutoring from the one down there. Meatloaf, just ok. Salad bar, small & straight out of the 70s. ABC chicken, NOT just like PSB. Single smash burger, NOT smashed. The onion rings & fries were good, as were the draft beers. This is not the first time that I have written comments on this site to recommend State Road Provisions - nor, I suspect will it be the last. Why, you might ask, would I say that. Simply put, the food here is fantastic, and the price is reasonable. But, as important as the quality, taste, and price of the food is, the knowledge, friendliness, and service of the staff - including both waitstaff and bar staff - is a major attraction for my wife and me. It is these people that really make the dining experience here wonderful. It is the servers that really make the ambiance as great as it is. Back in the summer, I wrote recommendation for this restaurant, and gave big thumbs-up to a couple of members of the staff. I would like to include praise for a couple other members of the staff now. Autumn works the bar and is very efficient and as friendly and conversational as the day is long. Maria generally waits tables, and is hard-working and efficient as well. She keeps close watch on her tables and customers - keeping water glasses full for example - without being intrusive. I only wish that I had given Rez a personal thumbs-up as well, but I recently found out that she has left - only helping out occasionally. In my review last summer, I said that if the restaurant had an "Employee of the Month" award, that I thought that Cole would be a good candidate. I would now like to include Maria and Autumn as being worthy of such an award as well! Obviously, the cooks are incredible as well, but I simply have not had any personal contact with any of them, so have no names to mention. Now, my only complaint about this restaurant: the lights in the men's restroom - and, I assume the women's restroom as well - are so dim that it is a bit hard to see while walking into the restroom, using the urinal, or washing up when done. Luckily, they do have a bigger wattage lightbulb in the toilet stall, so you are able to see to clean up and flush. But a bigger bulb in the main part of the restroom would be much appreciated! The waitress said the "prime steak" entree was prime sirloin? This piece of meat was so hard to cut and chew that it's got to be a cheap cut of some other part of the cow...the price was $25 for 6 oz and $39 for 16 oz. I gave up trying to eat it and passed it on to my husband, who simply did not want to waste it. My duchess potatoes were cold and served in a small pile on the plate. Our waitress offered to replace them, but we had already waited 40 minutes for our food, so I declined. I am so disappointed. We loved coming to Fish, the restaurant in this same location, that closed last year. We had high hopes for this successor but they have big shoes to fill. The kids enjoyed their burgers and pizzas- so there's that... Our family of 8 had a $210.00 bill before tipping, including two of those $39 "prime steaks". Stick with the pizza and burgers read more

I went for my birthday in June. Apps never showed up food took an hour. The table next to us got up and left because the kitchen lost their ticket. I knew everyone was short staffed so didn't leave a review for that reason. I did however leave multiple messages for the owners to contact me. I never got a response. Went again 2 nights ago. Very nice waitress, food was average at best, but we went to pay and there was a 4% convenience fee added. That amount would be taken off if you paid cash the waitress said that it was on the menu about this fee. We all looked and it wasn't there nor anywhere in the restaurant. You can refuse to pay it, is my guess as you are legally only allowed to offer a cash discount, not charge a 4% convenience fee. We contacted visa and assuming the business will be contacted. We will never go there again. read more

We travel to Harbor Springs every year & have always noticed this restaurant but it was never opened as we passed. Finally after 7 years of religiously visiting the area we were able to give it a try. It was a Saturday evening right before dinner time, there were only a handful of cars in the lot. Asked the server what she would recommend & she said "the prime rib is amazing, we sell out every weekend." I totally went for it and it looked delicious! HOWEVER, the texture of the meat was so awful I couldn't even chew it. Most prime rib I've had in my life is so tender you can cut it with your butter knife. This was terrible! The server did take it off our bill along with the whitefish that was also sub par, we appreciated that. The servers seemed to be a bit distracted by the locals that were in the restaurant hitting on them. It was just an odd experience all around. I feel it has a lot of potential with its location and outdoor/yard set up but definitely needs some TLC by the owners/management. read more

We have always wanted to try the pizza so tonight was the night. I place an online order for pickup. They were kind enough to call, because the order went through that I wanted half of the topping on one side and cheese on the other. Yes, I wanted the toppings on the entire pizza. When I got there, they charged me another $12 to have the toppings placed on the entire pizza, taking the total to $43! Hell I would have been willing to go back in the kitchen and do it myself! They charge $1.40 for each topping. I drove ten miles out of town to pick it up. Gee does it come with free beer?! Total unbelievable, it's hard to support local when a 16" pizza is $43! No wonder there is never any cars in the parking lot. Will not be back!!! Plus will no longer support the Paper Station or Beacon, nor will we recommend any of these. I pour wine at one of the local wineries, I have sent many visitors your way. Not anymore, big mistake huge! read more

Sad to say they missed the mark. We made a reservation for 6:45 which is later than our 80+ group usually eat. Arrived on time to be told reservation didn't count. Manager attempted to to still seat us. Waited an hour and 17 minutes fir an appetizer while all tables around us were served after being seated before us. I would not recommend. read more

Food was good! We got onion rings (similar to Paper Station), a burger, and the korean BBQ sliders. Service was sub-par. They were out of a few popular beers, and the serving staff was somewhat distracting. One woman was following around a new waitress (perhaps training her) but it was so awkward. Every step she took, she was one step behind just breathing down her neck. The other staff seemed annoyed we did not want to sit at a high top table (very small) when we arrived. We would probably visit again if we wanted a quick burger & bite. read more

Very nice addition to the northern Michigan dining scene. I can't say enough about the tidiness, cleanliness, and service, along with the food being too notch. Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing, and very friendly, it made for a nice dinner. Two things are holding me back from giving that fifth star, first of all there's nothing explaining what was discounted for happy hour on the table and the waitress didn't explain it. We kind of thought the drinks we purchased was a special but price wise they were the most expensive drink that I've ever bought. Also the item we ordered which is a common thing across Michigan, the Friday fish fry, is a tad more expensive then other places in the area. It's located in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth the drive and there's nothing stopping us from returning, I recommend trying it for a peaceful night out read more

We got our first carryout order from them on the night before Thanksgiving. We were seriously disappointed with their failure to comply with the mask mandate and MDHHS orders. The staff member who gave me our order had her mask completely under her chin. There was a customer seated at the bar (mask under her chin the whole time) drinking beer, which is also not currently permitted under the MDHHS orders. The food was decent. The Hammy sandwich was good, as were the homemade chips and roasted beet salad. The Korean sliders were too salty. We will not be back until after the pandemic is over, given their disregard of safety measures. It's disappointing that they don't care about their customers or employees safety. read more

I have been coming here since they opened. It used to be pretty good. The food we had tonight was TERRIBLE. Pasta sauce out of a jar and frozen meatballs. Walleye was bland and sides were bad. The place was empty. We had such high hopes for the place because we love the Paper Station in town ( same owners). We're local and come here a lot. For the most part it's great. Love the staff and hours. My only suggestions would be more kid options (there are none for brunch) and kid desserts (there are only usually two adult-ish dessert options and not even a scoop of ice cream is available). The high chairs are also broken, and there's only two. No coloring menus or crayons. The last time we were there, we watched three families come in with small kids so there is definitely a need for kid options. In other words, consider making SRP more kid/family friendly for all the families who have small humans to feed and entertain. read more

We came for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Great atmosphere - up north bar, but with nice touches. It was a little damp for outdoor seating, but the deck looked very inviting. We enjoyed some yummy biscuits and gravy and a fluffy omelette, plus whiskey and Bailey's in our coffee! We didn't have our kids, but the place seemed very kid friendly, clean and had very friendly and courteous staff. We were very impressed! read more

Our meal was good. Not great, but very good. But so annoying; they offer cornbread with several meals, but when I asked to add a piece of cornbread with my entree salad, the answer was No! Really??? The server said they saved the cornbread for the other meals. Ok, but we ordered after 8pm; I am reasonably sure they will not have a run on the other meals and cornbread before closing time. The restaurant was not particularly busy, immediate seating for any guest arriving. Too bad. We liked this as it was close to home and the food is food. Nothing special to write about. It was nice to have a place to stop at that was not downtown Harbor Springs with the crowds. The building was extremely clean and the service either really attentive or our waitress wanted us to leave. We started with a few beers and decided on an appetizer of Cheese Curds (sorry no pic) but they did look homemade. The ranch dipping sauce was not good as it was clearly one of the off brands of ranch. I do not have anything good or bad to say but I most likely would not go back. After a day of skiing at Boyne Highlands we came here for dinner. We have two children 11 & 13. We waited about 15 minutes for a table but they do accept reservations. The spirts list was very nice! I enjoyed the Edge wine and my husband enjoyed a local beer. The kids had a nice kids menu and loved their food. I had a spinach salad with salmon and my husband had a pizza, all delicious!! I would highly recommend this place and will come back. read more

What happened??? When we dined here in June we had the fish and chips on a Friday and it was some of the best we ever had. We returned with friends in July and recommended the fish and chips and it was not as good, but ok. We went back this past Friday with an out-of-town guest and were embarrassed that we had once again recommended the fish and chips. The fish came out looking like large burnt potatoes it had so much coating on it. It was almost inedible. The two stars are for the fries and for the service which was good. We won't be returning or recommending this restaurant any time soon. read more
