Went with a group of friends to see The Sing-a-Long movie, Grease! It was so amazing! I wish I would have captured more of the ambiance, people were all decked out in costume, we were given props as we entered. Super fun and cute idea. The staff was very friendly, from the greeters to the concession stand. I only heard about it from a friend. When I looked online on the main website page it wasn't listed. Maybe word of mouth and their calendar that I didn't know about was enough, because it was almost a packed house. 5 out of 5 stars for me! Can't wait until next year! The Intermission drinks are always good and enjoy the atmosphere. Unfortunately we have not yet received acceptable service. Our most recent experience, we waited over 40+ minutes for anyone to come back and check on us. While it was busy due to an event at the state theater, they should staff more appropriately for busy nights rather than only having one server. On top of this we arrived well before the crowd and had empty drinks before they came in, with only a few other patrons we still received no service. Only was able to get 1 drink within an hour and 40 minutes although we were finished with our drink in the first 30 minutes. read more

I had purchased tickets for my kids for christmas. Spent $300.00 the show was cancelled. I was told I would be notified when they rescheduled. Waited and was never notified they rescheduled. I called them finally and asked when and if they were going to reschedule. I was told the had the show 4 months ago. I let them know I never was notified. She proceeded to tell me they emailed me and spoke to me on the phone. Which is a lie. I told her I never got notified and ask what they were going to do for me. I never spoke to anyone. And was told they would do nothing to make it right. I will never be back to that establishment. read more

I had 3 drinks made by bartender Serena and they were excellent. Expresso Martini is her favorite. I asked her to make me the oddest drink she's made and it was a Zombie Reviver! I bought tickets from The State Theater in Modesto, CA for the show called "Stroll Down Penny Lane" to surprise my husband, who is a die-hard Beatles and Paul McCartney fan. We were very disappointed, and it's my own fault when I assumed the band was The Penny Lane Tribute Band. The musicians were very talented, however, their lead singer, Joe Anastasi, more so than not, sang off key or made-up parts that did not belong to original songs. At first, I thought maybe he has a cold, but that was not the case. He did not or could not reach the correct range, like Paul McCartney. So sad to see my husband, a professional musician himself, cringe when the vocalist could not keep on the right key. Amongst the disconnected banter with band members, the videos would stop streaming because of lost internet connections. It distracted from the performances, while it left audiences starring at the large movie screen blinking "Linking up . . . ". We saw 4-5 couples exiting before intermission and not return. We wanted to leave when intermission was over, but we thought we'd give them another chance to redeem themselves. It did not get better. Before writing this review, I went back to The State Theater's website and thoroughly read the Synopsis of Stroll Down Penny Lane. It said they spent 4 years putting this performance together. Perhaps more time should have been spent in the studio to enhance Joe Anastasi's voice. That way the professional band members would have the ability to harmonize with him. We all know we don't sound the same way when we were younger but that's where studio enhancements would payoff big. That way the audience still hears the magic that Joe intended. I did go to their website and listened to their music samples; their sound was amazing, totally different from tonight's experience. On a positive note: shout out to the animation of Avi Ofer, and the video editor Eric Pomert, awesome job. read more

What an incredible venue for movies! The staff is so welcoming and kind!! We especially love Gabby and our fellow Premier League soccer fan, Julian! The theatre itself is a 100+ year old grand beauty restored to its original decor by Ronda MacDonald and her partner, it's a joy to experience! Gazelles lighting and sound complete our time there. We love the atmosphere and the myriad of offerings they facilitate for us film lovers! We are so lucky to have Randy provide old classics on the big screen as well!!! read more

If I didn't like this place it would have been one star . Went on a special day. The person at the door was not very pleasant. It almost seems like she didn't want to be there or she was having a bad day. After walking into the state theater like I have many times, I looked back and observed samples of food being given out without any gloves or tongues. Every single item that was being presented to a guest was touched by her hands with no gloves. I'm not the safety Marshall, but even at the farmers market if there's a sample of some fruit or vegetables being given out gloves and tongues are used every time. I'm not claiming that her hands were dirty. I just think if you're gonna hand out any type of food or samples or donut holes, you should have gloves on and be serving it the correct way. There's rules and regulations for a reason. I am all for a smaller government and less rules, but if they're here, so we gotta follow them. I am sure this is not the first time that this has happened, but I thought I would bring it to the attention of the public. As of now, I would come back to watch a movie, but I would never take any food from this lady's hand. read more

The Modesto Opera Company performed at the State Theatre. I hadn't been there for years. Now that I'm older I was concerned about accessibility, but was easily accomodated and did not have to climb stairs or steep inclines. There's a wide flat aisle between the seats upstairs and those below, so that a walker or wheelchair can safely find a seat. There are seats available. Don't hesitate to enjoy something there, it's a wonderful, beautiful theater. read more

The Jewel is a really great intimate addition to the main area. Entrance is off to the left of the main entrance. All concessions can be bought on the Jewel side. The first 3 rows are all on the same level but spaced in a way that you are not looking at the back of someone's head. Rows D through handicap (3) are on their own level. Row D seems like the best one for the view. Row A is too close to the screen for me, you have to crane your neck back a bit. The screen once the movie is playing is about 120 inches. The sound is a little lacking as it seems like the speakers do not surround the room. Friendly staff and very attentive. read more

I've seen some great concerts at the State over the years. I was extremely disappointed when I recently looked at the schedule and saw it's almost all tribute bands. There are plenty of great real acts out there that aren't a total copy of something there. I always thought the State would help keep live music alive. read more

First of all let me say I LOVE THE STATE THEATER. I go to about 8-12 films, functions and concerts a year. I also bring from 4-10 people with me...We eat, drink and spend money there. But so many times I have had to make MULTIPLE Trips to buy tickets. I can understand if it was close or there were no employees available but just about everytime there's 3-5 standing around. When I ask if I can purchase tix they say the Box Office is closed and to come back. I recently bought tix for the Led Zeppelin cover band show...(7) of them at $29 a piece but had to go back 3 times to buy them even as the employees were standing there. Do you NOT want to sell tix? Make a profit to stick into refurbishing the theater? Stay afloat without constsnt need for donations? I love and support the arts but this is stupid...Every dollar counts...Make it while it's there. No reason to turn away customers with CASH IN HAND. Like I said this has happened MULTIPLE times and I know you hire kids but you are not teaching them how REAL BUISNESSES WORK doing this. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE the state theatre! The venue is beautiful and the atmosphere is very fun. They have mocktails right next door that is so yummy! The staff are super sweet and offer the best recommendation. I frequent here often, and this would have been a five star review if my current experience was just a bit better. I had gone to the chill list poetry slam and all the poets were amazing. I just wish they had a better host. The guy made many inappropriate jokes right after some gut wrenching poetry about traumatic experiences. From OJ Simpson jokes to grooming jokes, he didn't even have the information for all the poets. At one point we even happy birthday for some random lady? It was just kind of all over the place. Maybe he was drunk but It just didn't really feel respectful to the poets. read more

Came here to attend the Warren Miller film tour. Getting close to the address quickly turned into a traffic nightmare as numerous streets were closed off, including the street with this theater. Apparently, there was some kind of downtown activity. It would have been nice if the theater would have added a special note on the event description warning about the street closures. I could have bought my ticket online but it had an additional online processing fee attached so why not just buy it at the box office and save on the additional fee...it's at the same place. When I got there, I handed the box office worker the ticket price...at which she said there was an additional processing fee...huh! Shame on management...hidden fees are unethical! This nostalgic old theater has a pretty small lobby. There's a small concession stand which also sells alcohol...not sure if it's a full liquor options or just beer and wine. There's also a coffee house stand. I didn't purchase anything so I can't comment on the prices. Seating is old style...low back seats, hard, tight rows, no reclining, and no cup holders. I haven't seen this theater seat type in decades. These seats surely made me appreciate modernized theaters...a lot! Sound was good. The screen is a bit small but it works. Now there were two sections on the screen that needed attention. One in particular was a yellow horizontal line that ran nearly edge to edge across the screen. Since there were numerous snow scenes, the yellow line was very apparent. The other area was either a dirty section or an area that had been repaired (or needed repair). At the screen base is a small stage area for live performances. There was no private parking lot that I noticed. Because the street was closed off, I ended up parking a few blocks away and walking in. I understand this theater focuses on old, unique, and or independent films. I believe they even have some live performances. If do, they're definitely focussing on a niche market. My overall experience was OK. Doubt I'll ever come back again unless I have no other reasonably close alternatives. read more

The State Theatre is a valley gem... only time I ever go to Modesto is to see a movie at The State. Took my 6 yr old to see Mary Poppins on a Saturday morning and was nothing but a great experience. The staff is amazing, friendly, warm and kind. The place and it's amenities are always sparkling clean. I love an old theatre and feel lucky to have one in the valley. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to come around and catch a flick at The State Theater. Places like these are truly gems and it's important we keep them around! They've got real butter on the popcorn, a great selection of booze, artisan ice tea. The place is clean and tidy, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It's also really nice to have a place that will pick up smaller/indie flicks! The cons to this place are so minimal that I'll definitely be back, but they're worth mentioning: real butter on popcorn is dope, but unless you ask for light butter, you're going to end up with more than a few pieces of soggy popcorn. There are also no cup-holders in the seats, a minor annoyance offset by how gorgeous the space is. Lastly, it's a bit warm during the super hot days; it's not entirely unpleasant though as other movie theaters in town are often far too cold for comfort. It's also cool that they show old classics and are offering a book-to-movie-book-club! This is a great business. Check them out! read more

Went to the Country Bash last night (2/21/23) and left before it started. It was my first time there and was disappointed with the seats and how cramped in they are. The amount of room provided a seat is a wee bit less than flying coach at United. There is no way to avoid touching your neighbor's arm since so tightly packed. Seats are fold down with a low back so if you have back aches, you may want to reconsider going. It was sold out and was becoming humid due to a lack of adequate ventilation as well. On the bright side, tickets were only $15ea so i only lost $30 (wife and I) and a few hours of my time. I think i will stick to the Gallo Theatre when going to a show in Modesto. read more

I want to like this place. The State Theater is a part of Modesto History. It was built over 80 years ago and is also a community center. But with overpriced drinks/snacks, I can't say it's worth coming and sitting in front of a screen that is too small for the room it's in and seats with no cup holder. I can have a better movie going experience at the same price elsewhere. The only major draw is that the State Theater has showings for films not playing in other theaters. Otherwise, probably not really worth coming here. read more
