I visited today with my mom- I had my usual iced dirty "Indian Summer" and it was delicious as always! You can always count on Steady State for consistency in their product. What I wanted to shoutout in particular was the stellar customer service we received. We visited today, on 8/22, around 11am. I wish we would have gotten the barista's name who rang us up- but he was just spectacular. My mom has an autoimmune disease and some days are just harder than others in terms of us getting out of the house and enjoying some mother-daughter time. Steady State is one of the best coffee shops in SD/north county. I rarely visit the same coffee shop multiple times a year but I will always visit Steady State on my drives up to LA. I actually look forward to the long drive because that will allow me to enjoy their wonderful PSL - pancake syrup latte. The interior is so warm and inviting. The bar is a large square in the middle of the coffee shop so you can chat with the baristas and the whole coffee shop has such an open, bright concept with beautiful murals on the wall. Everyone is so kind and I always leave in a better mood. There are goodies and cute merch for sale and when you walk up to the ordering counter, you can see their food menu and delicious pastries. I often get the ham and swiss (?) croissant. I always order the PSL hot and it comes sprinkled with colorful salt on top, which balances out the sweetness of the syrup perfectly. A friend who lives in Carlsbad, recommended this coffee shop and so glad that we went. We came on a Saturday at 10 AM so as expected, it was quite busy. There were about 8 people in line ahead of us, but it went pretty quickly. Gave us more time to think about what we wanted :) We got an Americano with oat milk and initially only ordered the smoked salmon sandwich to split, but my husband liked it so much that I got back in line and ordered this spicy Italian. Loved this shop and how big it was on the inside and outside patio. Lots of bar space and small/big tables to work from with yourself or others. Outside has some shaded options and the coffee was amazing!! They definitely get some coffee rushes but line and drinks move out fast. read more

A really nice new coffee roaster and cafe in San Marcos, right across from Craft Coast. The Americano and pour over are both really nice--super smooth espresso and obviously well-curated beans. The storefront is a bit unassuming, being part of a standard business park, but the interior is really nice and clean, and reminds me of Japanese coffee shops, and even looks somewhat like Longplay HiFi in Sherman Heights. The Pancake Syrup Latte is a very popular and tasty choice if you're looking for a treat--it's creamy, the coffee is still forward, and it's a slightly sweet without being saccharin. Does it taste like pancakes? Not exactly, but it's a well-balanced treat-like drink worth trying iced on a hot day. read more

Overall I really love an appreciate this spot. It's got an OG locals flavor that is in short supply these days for the neighborhood. I really appreciate that they offer single origin espresso, they're one of the few outside of Vigilante that I know of that even offer that so props there, though adding that to something like a flat-white makes for like a $11 dollar drink, which price wise is silly even by Los Angeles Standards. I like that they have gluten free chocolate cake as a pastry option, but I do wonder if they hashbrown patties in their sandwhiches are strictly gluten free as I've had problem after eating them in the past. read more

Great coffee shop in downtown Carlsbad that's easy to find, with a decently sized parking lot, so finding a spot wasn't a hassle. It was a little busy when I visited, but the wait wasn't bad at all. The employees were very friendly, and the interior is spacious with cute décor and unique wall art. The atmosphere was a bit too hectic for me personally, so I took my drink to go. Almost every time I'm driving down from LA to San Diego, or vice versa, I try and carve out time to pop into Steady State. I'm a bit of a coffee snob; I make my own espresso at home and have tried probably hundreds of different coffee roasters over the last few years, so third wave coffee is something I'm knowledgeable about and thoroughly enjoy. If I try a coffee shop that doesn't meet my expectations, I have no problems not returning, but with Steady State, they knock it out of the park and deliver consistent, tasty coffee each time. We tried one of their single-varietal pour-overs, and it was so fresh, clean, and balanced with subtle fruit notes that we literally went back a second time. I went on a coffee crawl in San Diego when SSR was first mentioned and a couple of months ago while at Achilles Coffee Roasting in Del Mar the barista mentioned SSR once again. I had to get here stat. After a jaunt by the ocean we walked quickly to Steady State Roasting. The atmosphere is comfortable, clean, in Carlsbad Village. There are cute places to sip your coffee or tea outside but we chose to sit inside. The storefront has all the tools you'll need to craft your own coffee at home, to be your own barista, if you wish. Scales, kettles, beans, cups, mugs, a beautiful spoon to use in topping your espresso with foamy milk, and so much more! Salmon shmear breakfast sandwich- beautifully balanced with tangy pickled red onions, crunchy crisp cucumbers, caper shmear all on a fresh Prager Bros focaccia bread. Oh my Lord! I had to share this sandwich with my friend who was the birthday girl. If it were any other day it would have been all mine! The baristas were super friendly and helpful. I ordered an iced americano and my friend an iced vanilla latte with almond milk. The baristas and staff had a well oiled process with plenty of workers to keep up with the busyness of a Saturday morning. Can't wait till I can make my way back to Steady Street. read more

I ordered the Breakfast Boi sandwich, and it was insanely delicious and a beautiful cross section. My latte was great, very refreshing and smooth. How I can pay $10 for a cup of coffee and still write a 5-star review behooves me. I should be stripped of my privilege just for that regard. As someone who considers himself relatively cost-conscious, I swallowed hard when paying $10 for an anaerobic coffee pourover, but you still get 5-stars: why? It reignited my senses for fine coffee and I bought some beans (at a slightly less egregious price of $26) to take home and brew at home. Anaerobic coffee is a process where the coffee cherries are deprived of oxygen and fermented creating some real nice flavors. This was all I tried here, but I'll be back for the food. We ordered a latte, a matcha latte with oat milk, and a chocolate croissant. Milk texture and temperature were right on point for both drinks! Nice strong coffee flavor in the latte. My husband thought the latte was a tiny bit runny/watery (if that makes sense) but I thought it was fine. I'm not an oat milk drinker, but I enjoyed the flavor of the oat milk. The tiny downside is that the oat milk kinda overpowers the matcha flavor. It was a nice smooth drink. We also ordered a chocolate croissant and it was good too. I've been working through their "less" expensive bags and haven't quite gotten the guts to try their $30+ roasts but I'm building up the courage. This coffee shop was really tucked away I almost didn't find it! Very industrial inside, lots of open space, plenty of tables and chairs, high top bar seating, which I thought was really cool. They had outdoor tables and chairs too although it was in an alley so while you're sitting outside you're looking into a parking lot so it left something to be desired especially when you're on vacation and know there's a beach just blocks away. Because of this I didn't stay long, got a cup of coffee and sat outside for a bit. The coffee was good, not super memorable from all of the coffee shops I tried out during my trip but good. The staff seemed really friendly, although I will say the barista was having a conversation with a couple in line in front of me for way too long. I was waiting for a long long time for them to finish their conversation. I recently got into coffee and espresso. I often keep it simple with an iced latte but I crave Steady State's dirty chai. They make their chai so it's not a sugar bomb. It's delicious iced but after summer I look forward to also enjoying it hot. There is often a line but they get through it quickly. It ended up taking 20-30 minutes to order and receive our drinks but it was worth it as the drinks we got were amazing. It had a great balance of creamy, salty, and sweetness. I hadn't made my way back to Steady state since it was about half its size during the pandemic. The ambiance is great here with tons of natural light and spots to sit and chat. Some might miss this shop since it's tucked in a small shopping center, but it's kind of nice to have a lowkey shop to go to amidst the chaos of the village. The iced latte was great and had smooth espresso. Though the amount of liquid was quite small given the latte was $6.50+$1 tip, it is definitely yummy.
