I came here with a friend around 9:30 pm on a Saturday evening for a late dinner. I was surprised that the place was very busy, with hardly a free table that late at night. It has a 1950s diner feel but the menu features both old school and new wave twists on the classics. Our waitress was very entertaining when taking our orders. I had never been to a Steak and Shake before and I was pleasantly surprised with the food: my burger had that nice freshly-formed patty char from the grill, with onions and gooey cheese melted on it. Their fries are unique in that they're cut extra thin and have excellent zesty seasoning. Their milkshakes are thick and creamy, with delicious whipped cream and a cherry on top. I need to come here more often. I like this restaurant. It has a 50"s and 60"s setting plus they play music from that era too. I recommend coming in here after 2pm because they are way too busy for lunch. Even at 1pm they are busy. But it looks like it lightens up around 2. menu items ordered: cheeseburger, French fries and a coke. The cheeseburger was great and just the right size I think. It's was very tasty with lots of cheese. It came all American with pickle, lettuce, tomato. 0nion, mayonnaise, and mustard. The French fries were thin but good. My waitress was great. read more

Dang I hate giving meh reviews but this one earned if. Love Steak n Shake but man this place could use a dose of common sense. Sure they were slam busy but that's no excuse for slow service and a dirty restaurant. First problems is that it was staffed with a bunch of high schoolers probably just hired for a summer job. We were about to be seated when one broke the mop right in front of us and the hostess just stood there and chatted with the co-worker while she blocked the aisle and had customers waiting. (Side note, mop was not broke just not put together correctly, I've mopped quiet a few floors in my day). Also the guilty mop breaker had the handle pointed right out towards customers! Again common sense should prevail at some point you would hope? Finally got to our booth and the bus boy had left a spray bottle on the table. Also failed to wipe off both seats from crumbs. Come on people this first impression stinks! Then it took 15min to get two burgers and a hotdog. Yes I know they are cooked to order but 15? Then after finishing I go to pay and then decide not to. There is a line of 10 people waiting to pay. Yes I counted. So rather than stand in line I waited till he was down to three. I get up there and find out why, another teenager that is currently confused by a coupon that the cash register isn't accepting. Manager comes up and figures out its because the guy didn't order that item in the first place! Ugh, simple common sense again people. Our waitress did comp us a free kids meal so that earned you a star right there. Maybe it was because the food took so long to come out? Well, let's just say this will be my first and last time here. This is truly horrific experience I had here. I understand it was late into the night, but if you're open 24/7 then you are open. I ordered a bacon and cheese steak burger plain for my cousin and a Wisconsin butter with no cheese for me. This was how the burger turns out. I guess plain means differently in Cleveland, Tennessee than it does in Texas, but that could have been answered. I ordered no cheese, yet my burger was loaded with cheese. And also, when the server handed me my food, she kept a far distance from the window and had the window slammed in my face. All I wanted to ask for was ketchup. First time ever to one of these. Should have read the reviews and paid attention to them. We stood at the table waiting for them to clean it - 10 min, moved us to a different table, ok. Now waited 10 more minutes for the waitress to get our drinks and now waited for another 15 minutes for her to come back to get our order. Nothing difficult two burgers and a chili Mac. She apologized for forgetting about us. When the delivered the order, 15 minutes later - they forgot the chili Mac! Then I noticed my burger was to have two patties and it only had one, Cussin-ah, was it that hard. As she didn't charge us for the chili Mac we gave up. We went on New Year's Day - Sunday and everything was great. Went back two weeks later on a Monday and this place totally sucked. I don't think that they really cared. I got the Royale. My first time in a Steak and Shake. Absolutely loved the ambiance, decor, menu, and prices. The only thing I was disappointed with was the staff. The wait staff all looked miserable, never smiled, and looked like they hate their jobs. The manager was rushing around, jumping up from his counter seat to check on tables and staff. Nothing wrong with that, though his racing and high energy were a bit stressful for diners to watch. When most of his wait staff were congregated together, I heard him tell the group to get some pep in their step (or something along those lines). Not a single employee looked at him or acknowledged in any way that the boss' command. Total insubbordination. I anxiously awaited the manager's arrival to our table to check how everything was, as he did with all the tables around us. Alas, he never came, so what I was going to tell him, I'll add here. One waitress kept slipping into the ladies' room, leaving her tables, to FaceTime her boyfriend. The diners saw it, but The manager seemed to miss it entirely. Also, when I went to the register to pay, the young man just glared at me, emotionless and speechless. So, I hand him my check. As he takes it from me, he literally rolled his eyes, sighed, and looked sideways. Then he huffed again and acted like it was SO much effort to swipe his card to unlock the register. I nearly asked him if he finds it so difficult to do his job, but I kept my mouth shut. I'd never seen such an apathetic employee. Wow. Apparently good staff is hard to find in that area. I went to the drive thru on the way to my granny's house and got a burger with my brother. We really got it more to allow our ladies (my wife and his gf) to reminisce with us for our college years. I can say that it was very much the same gut plugging (get your mind out of the gutter!!!) mess that I remembered it as. Think of it as a CIED - a Culinary Improvised Excrement-blocking Device. I think now that I'm in my 30s, I'm going to have to steer clear of the place. The only reason it got two stars from me is because the shakes are still rather tasty - nice and thick. Food is great if you can actually get service. Typically I always get pretty bad service here (slow, no refills, etc.). Went about 10pm on a Tuesday night and it was pretty busy. It took us 5 minutes to get seated, all the servers were chit chatting in the server station. There was a man waiting to pay to. After we finally got seated we never saw a waitress although plenty walked by and one even cleaned a table right next to us. There was a couple who had been sitting there since we came in and still didn't have drinks. And no one had food, the only people who had finished eating were raising their hands for their check. It seems like the servers just want to hide in the service station and ignore customers, they really don't seem to care at all. After waiting we just left and went to Applebee's where we got seated immediately. read more

Don't expect to get the meal you order if you want it any other way than how it says on the menu. I ordered a taco salad with extra meat, salsa, and no ranch dressing. I got my order to go so I grabbed the bag and left. I got back to work and take the food out of the bag. It's covered in ranch dressing. So I call and complain, just to be told, "that's the way it comes". Guess they don't care how you want your food, you are getting it per the description on the menu. The lettuce also had brown spots all over it, not just a piece or two, but more than half of it. Oh, and, they didn't give silverware. Kinda hard to eat a salad with no fork. The SnS near where I live in Georgia never have a problem getting my order made the way I want it. There was a time when I would have given them 5 stars...however lately they have really went down. Someone is skimping on the hamburger patties to the point I feel like I'm in the 80's again asking "Wheres the beef?". The menu is outdated and still shows the Chicago hot dog as a poppy seed bun which has not been the case for over a year now. That bun was the only reason I even liked the Chicago style hot dog and its just an overpriced hot dog without it. The coffee (thats what they call it anyways) is horrible. I have never had such horrible coffee in all my life not even from a convenient store or other fast food. I used to think the $4 meals were great but with the skimping of meat thats been going on there and the less than desirable service it has went waaay down for us. We used to go 3 times a week and now 2 times since December. Each time becoming more and more disappointed. Whether or not a server gets a tip depends highly upon the way the treat ME. Because I am the one tipping...NOT my man. When my FREE water isn't filled but his coke is refilled 3 times and I get to the point of having to ask for more water you can bet you are not getting a tip. My husband and I went there today. They drive thur was full. We decided to go in and order to go. We ordered a double steak burger with Mustard and Ketchup and fries and a cheese steak frank and fries. The manager did appolize for our wait. When we got home we found they got the order wrong.
