Well, sometimes I like being wrong! See, I have not considered myself a fan of 5 Guys since my first and second visits to the one in Atlanta, on Roswell Rd. Greasy fries, just-ok burger (can't quite remember what I put in the review, but I didn't love, for sure)...but I have seen the one in downtown Chattanooga on umpteen occasions when strolling by, en route to work, whatever, and finally had both the good-timing-opportunity and the burger-craving to give them a try. The little cheeseburger (just under $5) was just the right size for me; most servings are way too big so a smaller/kids option is great for me so I will eat it all (I don't tend to "take home" fast food especially...). The burger was solid. Ketchup, mustard, lettuce and (really fresh) tomato, plus cheese - well-seasoned and just what I wanted. The little fries ($2 and change) were really enough for two to split unless you're starving or hungover, and totally tasty; I didn't need to add salt and pepper, even, which is rare for me. Good lunch, not too pricey (healthy lunch options like a turkey sammy at Panera come close to $10 without a drink so for about $7, a burger now and then is a-ok) . . . glad to know that my now-local 5 Guys is not greasy, quickly served and tasty. Let me start by saying, I like Five Guys. I do. It's the closest thing to my beloved In 'N Out back home in So Cal. Nothing, in my opinion beats my INO so I won't bother comparing them. I'll review Five Guys on it's own merits, even though rumor has it that the Five Guys guys modeled their business after "that-which-will-not-be-named." The burgers are great. I love that you can pick a variety of toppings, condiments, etc. I'm a condiment freak, so this is seriously a good thing for me. I like that they have hot dogs too. Lunch crew here is great, but the night crew just don't give a damn. It used to be great, but over the past months it's gotten drastically worse. First time it took them a while to come to take my order, gave a sassy face, and didn't even ask what I wanted. I just had to start ordering to try to get a reply. Second time a couple of them were fighting over who had the clean the floors and empty the trash. Third time, it was half an hour from closing and one guy just seemed upset I was there. He had the entire restaurant to clean, but thought it was funny to slam chairs purposefully loud on the ground and clean around me. This continued for 20 minutes until I left. During this I was watching Netflix with my son and he was like "whatcha all whatchin", I told him and then it obviously wasn't cool enough and he grimaced disapproval. Then he continued to slam chairs down around us. Burger was also sub par and fries were a bit burnt. For years I went to Five Guys at least once a week, but just too many instances of this has just left me sour. Hixon and Mall area Five Guys are still great though, but I live downtown, so just a little too far to frequent. read more

I LOVE a Five Guys burger! Now that I am living a keto lifestyle I appreciate how they wrap the burger in big iceberg leafs and I can still load it up with all the grilled onions and grilled jalapeños and mushrooms! The food is not the reason this particular location is getting 3 stars, the eating area had lots of cleared but not cleaned tables and the setup of boxes that all Five Guys do with peanuts and potato boxes (!? Think that's what they are) was very sloppy and not like the Hixson location I usually visit. I love that the store has lots of windows for watching downtown life but the windows looked dingy too. Staff was friendly enough, but again... comparing it to the Hixson location, I was not impressed. Not that friendly, just taking orders and cooking. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the overly friendly and clean Hixson location, maybe I just went in at the wrong time. Not counting the homeless guy staring at me, there were only two guys here today at five guys. This false advertising does not go unnoticed. The food is always good at 5-3+homeless person guys. Definitely stop in and give the homeless guy a hug and grab yourself a burger. Burgers come in two sizes - little and regular. Do not be fooled. Little is big. Regular is bigger. A good rule of thumb is a little burger works just fine for any human between 3ft tall and 12 feet tall. read more

I have eaten at this location a couple of times as well as other Five Guys throughout the southeast and, as you would expect from a chain, it was an almost identical experience every time. For not much more than other tasteless chainstore burgers, you can get a decent meal. I had a small cheeseburger with everything but pickle, a "small" fry and a rootbeer. Even with not eating all the three pounds of fries that they gave me, it was all I could do to finish the burger. The burger was cooked properly and the balance of toppings was good although you will need napkins! The fries are not the best, but this is one time when volume makes up for quality. It's not that the fries are not good, it's just that I prefer steak fries to a thinner cut. The difference in all my Five Guys experiences has been the staff. Some have been great, some less so. On this particular day, it was busy in the restaurant, but the staff was doing a good job. What brief interaction I had with them was pleasant, and the service was quick. Although this is pricey compared to fast food fare, it is competitive with the burgers of nearby chains, but has a fresher flavor with a wide variety of topping choices. The excellent fries are large enough to share ... a regular order will feed 2-3 men. Sharing an order helps keep the price down as well.
