Whenever we're in the area, which is often, we try to have lunch here, because all of the Steak 'n Shakes near us have gone out of business, and I miss Steak 'n Shake! We make frequent trips to Kansas City to visit family members, and Columbia is a good halfway point for us. It's probably one of our two most often visited Columbia restaurants. As Steak 'n Shake locations go, this one is not the best I've ever seen, but it certainly isn't the worst. The servers frequently seem harried or flustered, like maybe they don't have enough help and are running themselves a little ragged. It's always clean enough, but it could be better. The food is good and consistent with other locations. I usually get the Bacon and Cheddar Double with fries, and it's always delicious. The Garlic Burger is also a favorite, but I like it better with pickles added, which sometimes seems to surprise people. Steak 'n Shake has by far my favorite fries, and I always eat those first, before they get cold. I hope this location is here for a very long time, so even though I can't get Steak 'n Shake near home, I can still enjoy it when I travel through Columbia. read more

So it's a Steak 'n Shake. It's a clean, well-staffed friendly environment and the prices are still reasonable enough to bring the whole family for lunch on the way to your annual float trip or vacation road trip. We arrived with a group of 11 and the servers were quick to push the tables together and get drinks on the table. We all had fresh fast food served picture perfect and the drinks were never empty. I would say it was a great service day. Our server was pleasant and if you don't mind being called "Darlin" or "Sweetheart" - well you may have found her to be charming. Our only complaint was the ticket was combined and due for the way the order was entered (sometimes more than one meal assigned to one seat) it was too complicated to unravel without a long affair. We opted to venmo our way out of the issue. Problem solved and we left happy. Not a bad stop if you want a quick inexpensive meal. read more

I came through the drive-thru​ on a Tuesday​ at​ about 5 pm, there was no one else in the line. After sitting for a few minutes they finally took my order. I placed an order for 3 adult meals and 2 child meals. At the window,​ I probably sat there for a good 10 minutes before I was acknowledged​ to take payment, then another 10 minutes for the food. I have been ordering a Royal burger with an over-easy egg since they came out. I often ask for a separate container so egg doesn't burst on the sandwich before I get to eat it at home through the drive-thru. Which they've always been happy to oblige. Today was my first time actually eating inside the restaurant with my family I requested an over easy egg which they denied to give me the waitress had to go back to the kitchen twice and they still said they would not do it. Then I said they only do that for the drive-thru and that it was too busy. After the 4th request they finally brought out at egg on a separate plate.. and said that was the last time they were going to do it. I recognize COVID-19 has made things a bit difficult, but this was frankly ridiculous. 1+ hour wait after ordering, hardly saw our waiter, and when the food finally arrived, the chicken strips were completely cold and didn't have any of the sauce we requested. When we mentioned the mistake as the food arrived, we didn't get the honey mustard until we we're packing up and ready to go! Not a single refill for either of our drinks all night! Went through the drive thru during the covid shut down. The manager in the window was not wearing gloves and he handled everything going out the window. The guy making the burgers had a glove on his right hand but not on his left. When I asked why he wasn't wearing gloves or the cook, he said he was making shakes and it was a hazard making shakes with gloves. When I asked why the guy touching all the food wasn't wearing gloves, he just stared at me without giving me an answer. During the blank stare the cook heard all of it and then put a glove on. When we are craving burgers we always come here. The burgers aren't messy & they don't overpower the burger with mustard or ketchup. The shoestring fries are good as well as the cheese sauce. The milkshakes are amazing. The workers could wear hair bonnets to keep hair from getting into food but so far we haven't encountered this issue of hair being on our orders. We've never had to wait long for our food. The chili is good as well. The chicken tenders can be alittle tough at times so our kids order grilled cheese to void this issue. read more

I've gone here three times. Every time they've messed up my order. The first time I paid for a garlic burger with chili cheese fries, assumed they got it right and realized I had no fries when I got home. My mistake. Second time I asked for a double steak burger with mustard. They took all of the toppings off and just gave me a burger with nothing but mustard on it. Today I asked my wife to get me food from here and I'll probably not go here ever again because of it. She asked for a bacon and cheese double steak burger with no sauce since I decided I'd just put it on myself since they fucked up the last time. They put ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise on it for some reason. The people who work here should maybe read back the orders if they're so confused by such a simple request. They're idiots. Back in Columbia for the solar eclipse in August, there were so many places I wanted to eat and drink in my former stomping ground--Shakespeare's (of course), Booche's, Heidelberg, Flat Branch, Broadway Diner, etc. We don't have SnS in the DC area, so I had to get at least one Frisco Melt too, which I did, and it was awesome. (I don't eat red meat, except for Frisco Melts). I also went twice for breakfast and had the skillets, which were voluminous and great. Got a Butterfinger shake on another visit--outstanding. Service was great every time. People with easy access to Steak 'n Shake should appreciate it! Not all of us are so fortunate. While enjoying my Frisco Melt, I wondered if I could find out on the interweb what's in SnS's Frisco sauce. Some brilliant people reverse engineered the sauce and cracked the code--two parts Thousand Island dressing, one part Wishbone French, one part Heinz ketchup, and also a splash of Worcestershire sauce. So, I couldn't wait to get home and make my own Frisco sauce. During the eclipse, 2:37 of totality, the first coast to coast total eclipse in 99 years, I was thinking, "This is boring. I just want to go home and make me some Frisco sauce." And I did, and it's good--a favorite condiment, along with Show-Me Liquid Smoke. If you go there at night the crew is absolutely the best burger makers I ever seen. The burger looks like the commercial when you open it. For the first time in my life, I walked out of a Steak 'n Shake without eating. Came in with my family and my son was very excited to get a cheeseburger, but we waited up front for longer than 5 minutes and no one ever even greeted us. There were six empty tables with food and plates waiting to be cleared and several other empty tables. We don't mind waiting, but someone could have at least told us they'd be with us shortly to seat us. We went elsewhere for our burgers tonight and had an enjoyable experience there. Our visit was terrible today. When we first walked in it was busy. So I understood a little wait to be seated. But then 2 groups that arrived after us were seated before us. We finally got seated and another 15 minutes go by before we could order. Again, I'm kind of like ok....they were a little busy. An hour goes by and finally our food arrives...well most of it. My fries were missing and my wife's salad didn't come with the ranch dressing. Who needs salad dressing, right? We are told our shakes are being worked on. 20 minutes go by and our shakes finally arrive. 2 in regular cups and 2 in To-Go cups because they are out of regular cups. Overall the food was ok, but the shakes were half melted. Drink refills, you ask? Nope, unless you flag down a different waitress.
