I had never had a bad experience at Steak N' Shake until I ate at this location last week. I ordered the crunchy jalapeno combo with a cinnamon crunch shake. It must have been sitting for 20 minuets by the time I received it. My fries we're cold, my bun and crunchy pieces were extremely soggy, and on top of all that I received a plain vanilla shake. After waiting to get through the drive through, I watched the girl lean against the counter and chat with a coworker while scrolling through her phone for ten minutes before she came to take my payment. After that, I waited another five minutes for my precooked food. I have always enjoyed going to Steak N Shake, but after this I don't know if I'll ever go to any location again. read more

Upon sitting down we waited 20 minutes to order drinks... and food, as we had plenty of time to decide what you wanted to eat AND drink. After ordering milkshakes, waters, and four of the same sandwich, we had another 20 minute wait for our WATERS. 45 minutes in, we got waters. After just over an hour, our meals came-one of which was topped with four curly black hairs. It took us another 20 minutes to finish our food, which happened do be the same amount of time it took for our milkshakes to come... just in time for dessert. We are from out of town ( WA state). Stopped in for lunch the other day. The food was good diner food. Atmosphere was fun. Waitress was a bit slow ( but they were busy) but was very kind and interesting. I definitely would go back. read more

The food is always really good, but the service and the wait time are always slow slow slow. It's like there isn't anyone organizing the Crew. My friends and I always go here to hang out and get some cheap eats. Everything about his place )has always been consistent in the years that I've been eating here: The food is good for the price, but the service always seems to be slow as well. It's a common local hangout, too, so they have never gotten upset when my group decides to stay for a while. Your expectations will be met but probably not exceeded here. read more

First time visting a steak n shake and I have to say it was pretty good. Had the fried chicken salad, the chicken was awesome tasting. The only down side for the star taken away is that i had a shake but it was soupy, more milk than shake. Would visit again when we travel back through. read more

First and only time we'll ever visit this location. Overall our experience started out well. Our server brought our drinks out right away, as well as my husband's shake. It was lunch time and the place was about half full, not crazy busy. We talked for a while and finally realized it had been about 20 minutes and still no food. Our waitress never came around to update us on the lengthy wait. We looked around and realized another couple - who had arrived after we did - already had their food. We finally flagged down our waitress and asked about our order. She said she would go check and after another 5 minutes she came back and said it would be ready shortly. Finally the manager brought out our order and half-heartedly apologized for the delay. My husband's order was wrong and our waitress hadn't brought silverware or napkins. We got the waitress's attention again. My husband sent his order back and asked for it to go since my lunch break was almost up. We also asked the waitress for silverware - which she never brought and we had to wave down another waitress to get it. We overhead another customer complain that his order was wrong. Just as we were about to leave so that I could get back to work on time, another waitress (not ours) brought my husband's food. As we were checking out at the register the manager again half-heartedly apologized for the delay in getting our food. No offer of restitution was made at all. Our waitress was terrible, the manager was terrible. A couple of the other waitresses did their part and tried to help. So that I could get back to work on time we rushed out the door. After being back at work a few minutes I got a call from my husband saying his order was still wrong! He took it back and the manager offered to remake it again. Seriously? My husband said he wanted his money back and finally the manager ended up refunding the whole meal. Bad experience, some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Our visit on 11/02/19 was not a pleasant one. First of all, I have to praise the staff...they all were polite and helpful. Our server, PJ, was nice and did his job. The food was good, meaning no one at my table complained about their meals. My complaint about the food is the size of the burgers (which all we ordered, with fries), which were a bit small. The skinny fries are a pain to eat. Why not have an option for different sized fries? The real problem we had was the time it took to seat us, and we only had five, one of was a 12 yo. The restaurant wasn't full when we arrived, but they just had nowhere to put five people. Five people! The add-on problem was that Steak n Shake in Cookeville, TN was short-staffed that shift. One female employee was waiting tables, cashing out patrons at the register and helping with seating. I know all it takes sometimes is one employee calling out to mess up the shift, so I'm not saying anything bad about the staff...I'm praising them. And the food size and the table sizes are a corporate thing. If we were sat sooner than 25 minutes I would've given them 4 stars. read more

The wait, the wait, the wait! Even on off times it takes a while to be seated, then to get a waitstaff to take your order, then to get your food. If you order one of their shakes (delicious) that takes extra time. Having said all that, their food is really good. My advice, go with some friends when you have some extra time to spend. The business owner needs to stop putting his own pics on the reviews and work on cleaning up this place and work on the service here. They seldom get shakes on the table with your food! Every time I visit Steak 'n Shake it always seems like it takes forever to get a meal. They're very slow and and the restaurant feels nasty when you walk in. The floors are sticky, the waiters clothes look like they need to be washed, and the windows/glass in between the tables should be wiped down from the greasy fingerprints. I will not be dining here anymore until this place cleans up. read more

I usually use the drive-thru and based on it, this particular Steak and Shake is above average. Their food is always very good. I visited on in Knoxville and it was nothing like this location. I actually called their customer service number and told them about the great the service and food at the Cookeville location after my Knoxville experience. The waiteress never came back to the table after giving us our drinks. She wasn't even the one to bring out our order. We were never ask while we were dining was everything okay, did we need something. I was asked was everything okay when I was paying the bill. A couple weeks ago, we wanted place a to-go order at Steak 'n Shake. I dialed their number and after about ten rings with no answer, I hung up and decided to wait a bit, thinking they were really busy. After about ten min, I dialed again. The phone rang 20 times, 30, 40 with no answer. I decided to let it ring and just see how long it would ring without anyone answering. 55 times was the magic number. After the 55th ring, someone picked it up and hung it up. I have ordered from there a couple times before, have the number saved in my phone, and know for a fact this was the correct number. This will be a tough one for you to believe. I swear by God and all that's holy, this is the way it was: I ordered spaghetti, hold the onions. Twenty minutes later the waitress brought to my table a bowl of spaghetti with exactly seven eight inch long strands hanging off the side of the bowl. I immediately grabbed four of the strands and pulled them out of the bowl and they were room temp. No heat in the bowl. I stuck my finger in the bowl. I do things like this when I am not happy at a restaurant. I toss croutons onto the table when I have requested "NO croutons", etc. I pick up "soft scrambled eggs" when they are hard as a rock and wave them around to show my displeasure with the lousy eggs!!! Not nice, you say ? I call that notion pure bullcrap!! We are paying an enormous amount for food and the least they could do for this overpriced commodity is to get the order right. There was SUPPOSED to be cheese on the spaghetti and I swear to you, there was all of a teaspoon of cheese in one tiny spot on the spaghetti! There was SUPPOSED to be chili sauce on the spaghetti. I am gonna estimate two tablespoons, max ! I also ordered a cheeseburger that was so over-cooked it actually cut my gums when I bit into it. The dimwitted server asked me if the food was gonna be alright. Damn !!!!!!! I said "Oh! Yeah! Perfect !!!" How can you communicate with an airhead like this? I ate two forksful of the cold spaghetti and two bites out of the world class burger and paid the bill and left. Teenage servers all over the room, laughing and having a great time while customers sat and waited for service. This place is a disaster and I would not go back into a steak and shake if I was starving !!!! I would even go to a McDonalds before I would ever eat at a steak and shake again. Traveling from Nashville to Virginia on I40. Never tried S&S, and honestly not a fan of fast food in general, but wanted a burger. Waited several minutes, as 4 different employees walked by, to be seated. As I was seated I had to knock a piece of food off my seat that had obviously been there for a while as it was dry and hard. Should have left at this point. Once we were finally waited on, it took approximately 12-15 minutes to get our food but no shakes. The shakes finally came, after, yes after we finished our meal. Informed the waitress the shakes would need to be "to go" so she brought styrofoam "to go" cups. Our full price milkshakes in the fancy glass filled the to go cups halfway. In other words, if you're going in you're getting ripped off. Not a good experience and definitely my first and last visit. read more

My wife and I look forwards to having breakfast at this restraunt when we make the 50 mile trip to Cookeville for any reason until todays experience. I doubt we will return. The waitresses seemed disorganized and although friendly, didn't get the job done. The cook was complaining loudly about working on a holiday and seemed to be doing his worst on every order.
