I was really disappointed when we walked in at 10:30 and were told we couldn't get breakfast. Then I was disappointed again at their choices of bread! White and wheat? No Sourdough!!!! That's sad! I ended up ordering a grilled chicken sandwich with no bread, I didn't know I wouldn't get the fixings! The chicken is dry and I don't even know if it was real! New owners, excellent servers and quality food. Prices are more than reasonable for working people and older folks on limited funds. I worked in Cookeville for almost 2 months and this was the 2nd spot that I ventured too outside of my hotel. I was craving a decent cheeseburger when I came across this local mom & pop about 10 minutes from town. They had a simple country menu but everything that you could want for a good lunch. The waitress was friendly and suggestive. Unfortunately they didn't have an egg to put on my burger but it wasn't lacking in flavor without it. My burger was perfect. Good size, all the classic fixins, and crispy tots to match. I had to take a star off for the banana pudding. I was really excited for some good home made country dessert and was sad I left without trying it there or I would've exchanged it for something else. The pudding tasted like they used green baby bananas to make it. They were firm and not ripened sweet. Definitely wouldn't recommend if that's the usual recipe. I have been here twice and both times, disappointing food. The service is excellent and the restaurant is very clean. The big special hamburger is nothing special-bun is big, meat patty premade and thin. Two of us ordered fries, both were cold and one order consisted of only 10 small left overs from the bottom of the basket to go along with 2 very small pieces of fish. Hushpuppies good. My wife and I recently visited the new and remodeled Doodle Restaurant. Since the last time we were there, in which we said "we wouldn't go back." The restaurant facility has been totally remodeled and updated. The wait staff was excellent and the food was so much better than before. The portions were very generous and the taste was delicious. The price was very fair in relation to the size of the portions. The restaurant was very clean and the parking makes it easily accessible to the restaurant. We recently dined with friends at this legendary Cookeville classic est. in 1953 (or maybe even earlier under a slightly different name). We were quickly greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted. Our server was quite friendly and welcoming. The dining area is a large half wall partitioned room. Most tables were seating for 4, with some round tables able to accommodate larger parties. Everyone in our group decided to partake of the Saturday night all you can eat Catfish dinner. (Currently offered on Friday too) The catfish was fried up PERFECTLY! Light, crispy cornmeal coating. Just the right amount of seasoning. And most importantly, NOT GREASY! The catfish was fresh and delicate with none of that "muddy" taste that catfish sometimes has. Initial portions were very generous. Three (3), large pieces of catfish, crinkle fries, hush puppy and a side of coleslaw. They serve with tarter sauce for the fish but also have hot sauce if you prefer. Those that asked for more catfish were brought a generous basket full of freshly prepared fish. You could clearly tell they cook to order. Hubster and I were saying we will need to visit again to try other things on the menu. I went tonight to have an enjoyable meal with my family. We arrived at 4:30 to have the catfish that DEBBIE made the trend popular. Today was the first time we have been there since there are new owners. Chris Henry, also the same Chris, from Henry Brothers Roofing, made it a point to tell me that he was THE OWNER! When we arrived, I went to the drink station and proceeded to help myself to gathering drinks. I needed a drink because our server didn't greet us yet and I have a condition where I need to have a drink with me at all times. Another server came up to me and said in a rude manner...servers get drinks for customers. I told her that I have always done it and I guess it was habit. Side note; I was just there this morning and Chris was there, I helped myself to drinks and yet, no one ever said a word. So we are eating and was wrapping things up. I saw friends who were sitting there so I had my own to go cup where I was going to top it off. Chris went around the restaurant to lean against the drink station and while I was talking with friends, I glanced over toward him and he literally jumped down my throat about getting my drinks. Would not allow me to speak; I was humiliated. I told him that it was habit that I got my drinks when we came in there. I do this because of the condition I mentioned earlier. I tend to drink a lot and I didn't want to run our server to death. Plus, after the first scolding from the server. I told my server that I was used to getting our drinks and apologized to him if I ran him to death. So that means...yes, I had accepted the fact that I need to no longer help myself. During Chris' chewing out session. I was trying to defend myself to which he didn't want to hear me. I told him he didn't need to police me. He returned with an "I won't tolerate you talking down to my employees, getting my health score lowered below the 95 it was now, and he didn't care if I ever came back." So then I guess they felt that his wife had to get a piece of me too. Right there at table 8 in the middle of the restaurant. Only humiliating me more. Once more, Chris is a friend of mine on FB; I have given him business to friends who needed roofs. Tonight, I found out just who he is...professing that he is a Christian and it's all over the walls. The big reason I sent people to him is because he and I both attend LIFE CHURCH. That alone placed a bad taste in my mouth for him. So I was humiliated in front of customers and there were many by someone who claims to be a child of God. All because I helped myself to glasses of water, 2 sweet teas, and a Diet Coke. I will never be back there again. Chris likes to throw the weight of him owning THE DOODLE. As far as I'm concerned, let him have it. read more

If you get one thing from this review, it's this: Do NOT get the chocolate pie. It literally has the consistency of refried beans and didn't even taste like chocolate. We ordered the giant cheeseburgers the buns were burnt the burgers were over cooked fries were cooked all the way through. The poor girl that was working was working 4 tables by herself another woman was there sitting near the kitchen and let us know that the other girl would be right with us the menu items all sounded mouth watering as we enjoy a home cooked meal more than a fancy one but if you are known for your giant burgers you might need work on the freshness and time management, very disappointed and probably won't be back anytime soon. I have called one of the owners Gary with no return call. they have been sent msgs, nothing. mgr at whistle stop did not want to do anything at the time it happened because she didn't want to embarrass dawn. what about the embarrassment she caused us and your business. it all comes down to a dollar. why else would dawn be screaming, you're gonna pay for this. this needs to stop or just close if this is how you treat the people paying your bills.,also I forgot to add, our order wasn't complicated, the special all you can eat fish and a liver meal but people that came in at least 20 minutes after us got there food, ate and was gone while we sat there. This is one of my favorite places to go to eat. They have excellent catfish and prices that are decent. You definitely get what you pay for. The staff has always been very pleasant and accommodating. Great mom and pop diner kind of place. It's called Dipsy Doodle because it used to be one of those Sonic-style drive-ins, and I believe they used to serve soft-serve ice cream back then. The original site has since been torn down. Never had a bad meal here. Where they excel is their hamburgers and their desserts, especially the pie. The hamburgers are big and juicy, and served with those fat, krinkle cut fries, (or tater tots or onion rings). They are the home of the 'Mile High Pie' which refers to the really high meringue they specialize in. The coconut cream pie is fabulous. On Fridays you can get really good all-you-can eat fried catfish. It is a little ways out of town, but worth the drive if you're looking for a cheeseburger or some pie. read more

I HATE to do this. I really wanted to like this place, but it's pretty awful. It is filthy- floors looked like they haven't been cleaned in weeks.The counter was dirty and in disarray. The restroom had no toilet paper and one of those cushioned seats that you can't really clean. I can go on and on but I would suggest that you READ THE HEALTH DEPT. REPORT! I thought that since the décor was so bad, the food MUST be good (since they usually have customers). WRONG!!! First off, I had to wait 15 minutes for any type of greeting or menu. Never did get a knife or fork. Had to ask for a napkin, salt, pepper, ketchup. "HOME OF THE GIANT BURGER". I think not. A whopper at Burger king is bigger and FAR better. Apparently, they don't have salt or pepper in the kitchen. The fries (frozen) were undercooked and the grease has gone bad. I'm sorry, but there's not much good I can say. I love Mom and Pops diners, but they OBVIOUSLY quit caring about this one a long time ago. It's sad. I WILL PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE HEALTH REPORTS IN THE FUTURE! read more
