These restaurants have gone down hill fast. My family used to really enjoy going to Steak & Shake. That has changed in the last few years. The inside is always dirty. The wait staff is usually dirty, white shirts were not a good idea. The service is slow, and we always have a long wait before we are greeted. For that reason, we usually try to order right away, because we don't know how long it will be until a server returns. The food is good and the prices are excellent. I still enjoy their steakburgers, they are good for the price. A little greasy, but that's the good stuff ! I could do without the fries, I don't understand the purpose of shoestring french fries. But that's a personal opinion. The shakes are good too, but seem to take way too long to make. We usually are already into our meal before the shakes arrive. Steak & Shake has also because quite a teenager hangout, which increases the noise level inside immensely. But if you try to use the drive thru, expect about a 20 to 30 minute wait for a large order. Whenever someone mentions Steak & Shake for dinner, it is always a hard decision because the service and cleanliness is sub-par, but the food and value is decent. read more

April the manager severed our tables and took an HOUR to get our food.. she only checked our table to bring the food The second time it took 10 minutes to be sat down, with only 4 people in the restaurant and no one in drive thru.. it took 20 minutes to get our cups of soda and water.. She didn't return to our table, 30 minutes in we walked out.. it is ridiculous that the only time you talk to your table is to say "Sorry for the wait"... I had this place earlier today and I always loved coming here , fast and friendly service . Food was good very good taste and the shakes always such a hard choice with the milk-shakes only because there's so many of them. I ended up ordered a Frisco Melt with fries with , I enjoyed it cooked well for me . Very good place to stop in and have a quick bite with the family and I love that it's open 24hours the price is very reasonable can't go wrong . read more

I sat at the window for over ten min for them to hand me my soda.. a bag with 3 fries and 3 burgers. so I told them what burgers I was missing as I looked into each one and also that I was missing a fry. A staff member did not return my fiance's debit card to him after running it. Unfortunately, we did not realize until the following day when he went to use the card again. Steak N Shake was the only place he had used his card the entire day. After realizing he did not have the card, we tried calling the store upwards of 20 times. They would not answer their phone. We made the 30 minute drive from our house to Steak N Shake to discover absolutely no cars in the parking lot and none in the drive thru. We pulled up to the window and asked if they had his card, the manager checked and said no. The card was inactivated and my fiance began the process to get a new one. So imagine my surprise when we get a call from my fiance's bank stating the individual who took the card attempted to use it at the ATM and when they failed to enter the correct PIN number, they discarded it in the parking lot. I would recommend not going to this location, and if you do pay with exact cash. Our service was total dog shit too, but that's secondary to the fact there's at least one thief working here. read more

Cars lined to the street on a Tuesday, small orders taking about an hour to be sent out while crew members hang out and lean on the counters instead of making food. Food runner told me she would check on my order several times and eventually clocked out and left without giving me an update on the order. Management seemed very rude and unpleasant to deal with, which is a shame because Steak 'n Shake on Elmore Ave used to be a great place to grab a bite to eat, but the past couple visits have left me feeling disappointed. You place your order on a large touchscreen(I get that it's becoming a thing) and they have the audacity to ask for gratuity up front. Nothing about the experience merits gratuity. The guy in the kitchen had his pants sagging literally down to his knees and he was wearing headphones. I attempted to ask him a question and he stared at me like I was an alien for a few seconds and turned around without saying a word. They don't bring your food to the table anymore, they bring it to a shabby stripped-down counter(you can still see where the fixtures once were) and yell your name. I had just enough time to catch the "server" to ask for the little bottle of peppers(they don't have those anymore). That was the only time I was able to directly interact with staff. One star is being generous, they'd be doing us a favor if they just went out of business. read more

I have tried numerous times to like this place. They have just ok burgers and they have really crappy fries. Their dogs are really nothing special at all either. I have tried a wide variety of burgers, and some of their gimmick burgers to, none of them impress in the slightest. I understand that this place is an institution fort there mid west, but to be honest I would prefer Hardees over this any day. My friend had never heard of Steak and Shake, so I took her there for lunch and what a lunch it was; fantastic tasty steak burgers juicy, not greasy, hot from the grill / seasoned salt and vinegar fries for me cajiun fries for her/ humongous milkshakes dipped by hand in a side by side chocolate and caramel for me and chocolate Oreo for her. However, this location does not allow for you to add any special requests when preserving online so this meant I was unable to ask for extra onion like I usually get, I couldn't ask for pepper sauce, and I couldn't request silverware. I also received no napkins. Why allow for online ordering and meal delivery services like Grub Hub and Door Dash if customers cannot get silverware? I travel a lot so these things may seem insignificant to most but for someone who lives out of a hotel silverware, napkins, and being able to customize is a must. I sat down and ordered two of the Sliders, and the Chili 3 Ways. All the food came out of the kitchen fast, hot, and delicious, and just like the food the service was exceptional. Never again. I have been wanting to try Steak 'n Shake for quite some time. I am utterly disappointed indeed. My mom ordered the hamburger special with Guacamole on it. Oh wow, the guac was dry and the burger should of never made it to the plate! The child had a jalapeño burger that she said was just okay. I on the other hand, since I have been watching what I eat, just ordered a slider and fries. What was brought to me was about a thumb size processed mess called beef on a bun (slider size) and let me just say, it was paper thin and you could LITERALLY see through it in some spots. I was beside myself as I tried to endure laughing! I did take off the bun since it was calories not needed, but the beef patty (can I call it that) was beyond funny. I told the waiter, is this for real? He said, yes sir it is. Of course we all looked at one another and realized that wow, they are serious. So since I ordered it I decided to woof it down. But it was in one gulp! Come on Steak 'n Shakers don't toy with my emotions! This is too funny even for me. So regardless, I also ordered a diet coke (don't judge me) and when I took my first sip I realized that this was not diet coke, (You see for medical reasons I cannot tolerate regular coke at all) and my head ache right away proved what I knew, it was a coke. So I told the waiter and he brought me out a diet coke and the taste was very different. I don't know, I thought I was going to have a great experience since in Chicago we don't have these fast food spots. I was highly disappointed and had hoped the Manager didn't ask me how the food was. But wait, SHE DID! And my honesty with YELP reviews shows on my honesty in being asked a question. This place used to be my refuge, my second home. On the surface it's a family friendly, moderately priced diner. In reality, it's a house of malice. I ordered my go-to shake, the dark chocolate. I received a shake containing dark chocolate; the shake also included stray pieces of butterfinger. The very substance I am allergic to lies within. The dirty, unwanted allergen was found in my apparently safe shake. The server was indifferent about this fact, asking if I wanted a new one. When she took the shake away, the piece of butterfinger was still sitting menacingly on my placemat. If a patron was any more allergic he or she would have died.
