I just went here for a quick burger with my sister and daughter. It was such a pleasant experience. This Steak 'n Shake is really well run. The place was spotless. The service was so fast. The food was perfectly cooked and fresh. I had different counters with four employees and each one was friendly and helpful. Orders were prepped quickly for our to-go order but there really isn't anywhere to wait inside because then you'd block the order kiosk. I don't get why they only accept kiosk orders when there are enough staff to stand there and watch you enter it. I still prefer personal interaction. Understand if you don't have enough workers; otherwise put a kid to work learning to communicate with all the types of people they'll encounter in the world outside their phones. This place isn't amazing but I do like when they have their half price drinks and shakes. Their burgers are so thin and I find them stale, dry and flavorless. If it wasn't for the toppings it wouldn't be a burger. I def don't like their fries but I do love the onion rings. I also love their mobile app. It's easy to order from and ready when you pick it up. Plus you get rewards. They're pretty cheap with their 4 for $4 deal. But other than that I don't visit very often. Fast food In my opinion is basically all the same. This is easily the best fast food restaurant in the area, of course it is slow and unwieldy, staff often seems to be well underpaid and overextended just like most of capitalist America. I would love to see a fair wage added in here and proving out what happens when people are given fair due for their time. Besides that, this is always a great location for enjoying quality time with friends. I happen to most recently try the app, one of the best apps for fast food right up there with Starbucks and Duncan. I did not even show up personally, but my buddy who had his wisdom teeth out mentioned he could only eat smooth food, so I ordered a Nutella shake for him through the app which he was able to get picked up. It is the Steak and Shake technology, smooth online app ordering process, and magical integrated options for payment like gift cards and various credit cards and even Google payment that has me reading about this brand more than the others. It is sad to see there is limited discounts now for their food. Used to be able to get mail flyers for great discounts on all the hot menu items however times have changed and best to find those reduced gift cards on eBay now. But about the actual experience, The milkshakes are a hit time and time again, it is decent service at this location, and the Royal Burger with an egg on it is always a wonderful and tasty dinner and easy-eating item. My other friends like the Frisco melt but I think it is way too cheesy and salty. I personally love the Royal and jalapeno crunch burgers best. read more

Good fires but service wasn't the best needs more employees in the area and better conditions

Ordered online Will never do it again. Husband gets there and sits for almost 15 minutes behind another car in the drive thru. We live less than 5 minutes away. Fries are cold and limp, single with everything was soggy and the Frisco melt was basically raw. Barely toasted soggy bread. I am assuming our order set on the counter while they were servicing the car ahead. How about having them pull over if it was a large order. The dine in is rarely open. Okay fine and they weren't slammed in the drive through. No excuse for cold undercooked food NONE. Unfortunately I should have gone to pick up because I would not have left the pick up window without them redoing my order. The burger was paper thin and cold and the fries were lukewarm and tasted of old grease. The shake was ok. Ended up throwing the burger and fries out, so just had a mediocre shake for my $8.50. This is a sad excuse for a steak 'n shake. While many I have gone to are decent but notoriously slow I went through the drive through at this one. I have never had this bad or an experience at one. The cheeseburger was stone cold as were the fries. They had mounded the lettuce and pickles which were the only things warm on this order. Horrible, slow service. Arrived at 730pm. Sat for 25 minutes being totally ignored. At 755pm the waiter arrived to take our order. Nineteen minutes later the waiter arrived with our meal, and he has to go back yo get our drink orders. Plus, they forgot my chili. Apparently there is some kind of milkshake makers union because our waiter was not allowed to make them, having to wait on the official milkshake maker to do it. There are 4 servers who are supposed to be waiting tables, and instead they ate hiding out in the back. The other 6 people in the back are doing who knows what, which is not resulting in speedy service. Food is always good here, but they just cannot get the service right. Now, let's talk about the men's room. Overflowing trash cans. Poopy baby diapers on the floor. Toilets not flushed. And someone tracking feces across the floor from toilet to sink. And...an employee went into the men's room, did his business, and left...leaving it in the same filthy condition or was in. Fifteen minutes later he went back to dump the trash. But the floors remain unmopped. And what is the manager doing? Apologizing to customers for the slow service, and arguing with people at the cash register over their bill. The manager allowed the person I had dinner with to use two coupons on his bill, but told me I couldn't. What the hell? No doubt about it. This place has a MANAGEMENT problem. I've been to other Steak-n-Shakes in Fort Wayne and never had this poor an experience. The problem is that is not an isolated instance. It happens over and over and over again. Here it is: On 4 August 2015, around 5:55am, my wife and I went to your store at 5402 Meijer Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46835, (store 315) for breakfast. There were two other customers in the store, reading newspapers. Both of us ordered coffee, and the "Cakes & Eggs" - one with "Thick Bacon" and one with sausage. I asked that my eggs be prepared "scrambled hard," my wife asked for, "scrambled." Concerning Coffee: Our coffee was brought in a cup, and the server brought no refills, or even asked. No spoons either. We were more than disappointed when the server brought our meals. As for Accuracy: Though we both ordered scrambled eggs, both of our eggs were in the form of flat, thin, small pancakes. There were indeed some egg, some pancake, and some meat on our plate - only a slight resemblance to what we ordered. We had to remind the server to bring syrup. On Appearance: The thickness of the "egg-disk" was like a dime, and I would be surprised if it included one entire egg! I posted photos on Yelp. Likewise, the single pancake was small, and as thin as a dime, maybe less. Though the bacon was supposed to be "Thick," it was of the cheap, thin variety. Of course, none of this resembled the photo in the menu, which was representing "Eggs & Cakes." About Taste: The taste was average. I have had better flavored eggs and pancakes made by young Boy and Girl Scouts. The sausage had very good flavor. As for Temperature: The meat was warm, but our eggs and "cakes" were room temperature! Let's touch on Safety: I am a disabled veteran and walk with a cane. Upon entering the store, there was a yellow sign, indicating a wet spot, NEAR THE DOOR. Our server seated us near the "back" of the store. Upon walking the short distance to the restroom, my cane slipped out from under me. The floor was so slippery I nearly fell three times on the way to the restroom. Looking at the floor, I could see the entire back aisle was wet with standing water droplets. It was as if someone drew used a GREASY, wet mop across the entire path, and then left it. There were no safety/warning signs in this area, but I recall seeing a mop bucket nearby. Environs: During the bulk of our visit, we could hear bits and pieces of conversations taking place in the back, by employees. There seemed to be some "drama" taking place, bordering on either a Soap Opera, or a Support Group. During the meal, our server came a second time and asked if our food tasted good. I said, "It tastes ok." This prompted the "shift manager" (?) to come by our table saying that the server told him we were not happy with our food. I began telling him about the thin, small eggs and cakes. Before I could say more, he said that this was his first time on this shift, and apologized. He said that he would give us "some off" our bill at the register. By that time, I had already made up my mind to report this visit to "Steak N Shake HQ," Yelp, and Urban Spoon. At the Register: When I went to the register the server snatched up my receipt and money, charging me the entire $14 price. The manager came over and said to the server, "I told you we were not charging them the whole price." The server said, "No you didn't!" The manager gave us back $2. They kept the receipt, but I had already taken a photo of it, anticipating this. The View from my Desk: I was heavily involved in inspections and education during my 20 years in the Air Force. It seems clear that the problem at this store is from the "Top - Down." There are many management tools and techniques out there - even those which cost little to nothing! The reason many businesses do not use these tools is that they take a little time, managers must be consistent in application, and the manager must not be worried about being everyone's friend. I hope Steak N Shake can correct the problems at this store. We do not need to lose more jobs in the Fort Wayne community. read more

We were excited to see that dining was open again but instead of being greeted like we used to when walking through the front door, there's screens staring at you and signs saying "Please use the Kiosks". No music playing and just the sound of people tapping on the screen. But we were excited to experience the old Steak 'n Shake again and ordered our food from the kiosk and paid the $31 for our meal and grabbed our self-serve drinks and went and sat down and waited for our food. My son ordered a shake and it came out quickly in the normal shake glass that they've always been known for so our expectations were still high for some good food. Then they called our name and I went up to find what looked like came from the middle school lunch room. The buns all had a piece of them tops ripped off of them and my Frisch Melt had a patty that was smaller than the palm of my hand. My wife and son's Pattie's weren't any better and the fries were cold. Not to mention, I ordered cheese fries and got fries with a cup of cheese on the side. The only thing we really enjoyed was the shake and our lemonades from the self-serve drink machine. I hate that my favorite small restaurant has gone to this. The quality was missing the mark for sure. The fries came out cold and limp and you could see where they had shaken the flavoring for the fries, in one big pile on one side of the order. The onion rings were mushy inside, very strange. The burgers were good and the only reason for 2 stars. My husband and I won't eat here anymore. The service is super slow and the place is very dirty. Seems to be a bad trend with this chain. We had the same issue of cleanliness and poor service when we used to visit the Kokomo locations when we lived nearby. We used to enjoy this restaurant but no longer. Let me start by saying that my wife and I enjoy Steak and Shake but we have had consistently bad service at this location. Several days ago, we made the mistake of giving this restaurant another try. Upon entering a near empty restaurant, my wife and I were seated promptly and unfortunately that is where the service ended. We sat in a nearly empty restaurant for several minutes while we watched and listened to the manager and staff talk about how slow business was that morning. After almost 10 minutes with no acknowledgement of our existence, we got up and left. we could hear one waitress yelling at another one that her table was leaving, wonder why? Geographically, this is a great location and we do like the chain however they have some definite management issues at this location! read more

Went to pay bill and again had to wait while all the staff again looked saw myself and another couple waiting to pay but I once again had to ask someone to get someone to come and help us. Ok so every time we have been here as a family (approx 4 times) we have been delighted by the food and the prices! We love the kids 12 & under get a free kids meal, with every $8 purchased all day Saturday and Sunday. Also you can use coupons, and save a lot that way as well! I get the $4 original double meal-the burgers always great! My husband likes the chili Mac dinner. My little boys like the mini slider steak burgers kids meal, our older son goes crazy over the $4 garlic double burger meal. We like the shakes but do not always get one. The reason I decided to write this review is bc our server was awesome-it's always busy, and we are a large, rather demanding(chaotic) group... But our male server whose name tag said server trainer (I believe) was wonderfully attentive to each person in our party! Out shopping and decided to stop here. My last experience was BAD, however this time was really good. We were greeted immediately. We had to wait a minute or two for a seat, but it was because we wanted a both. Our server Nick E. was fantastic. He got our drinks and shakes quickly and checked on us after our shakes came and after our food came. He was very friendly. The inside of the restaurant could use some upkeep, the ceiling tiles are all stained, the railing that divides the waiting area from the tables is collapsed, and the floor is consistently sticky.
