Onion Rings
Ethan E.

SNS is quite the wildcard in the fast food world. I feel as though they were once the place to be on a good night and now just another sign on the freeway. Although I think some level they are underrated as their shakes still hit fairly well. I've through here a few times with my buddy in the last year or so, and they keep a fairly clean place. They have fully moved to kiosks for ordering now, but still do have the ability to use cash. I am on board with this as it makes for Quicker processes and no lines. I find the beverage system to be quite interesting, as you get a receipt with code to scan by the drink machine so you're able to fill your cup (not sure what they're preventing though). The steak frank is not much to go home about, though its not the worst thing ever. Ok at best. Fries are good, but thats about where that parade ends. The onions rings absolutely slap for sure and are a staple on the menu! But why 3 stars? Because of the mood. It's honestly sort of depressing when theres only 9 people inside. Its tough to enjoy a meal in a dead environment. It is not a fault of the restaurant but reflection of the state of the chain. Hopefully they can turn it around someday, but atlas.

It has been a while since I've been to Steak and Shake. Now you order at a kiosk, pay and they call your number and you pick up your food at the counter. You get your own drink but you have to prompt them to give you a cup. This location was bright, clean and looked as if the furniture had been replaced. I remember it before as kinda grimy so it looked refreshed and upgraded. Our order was up quickly. The quality of the single steak burger was as I remembered it -- slightly a step above McDonalds -- although the skinny shoestring fries were excellent -- thin, crispy and hot and very plentiful.

Ehhhhh not the best experience here. Came with two friends on a Sunday night. They had one server working the entire restaurant (and this includes seating parties and bussing tables). He did a great job and was hustling, but it was ridiculous and I felt so bad for him. It was all he could do to get people seated in a reasonable amount of time and take and serve orders. The table across from us sat with dirty dishes almost the entire time we were there because he had no time. At one point someone who looked like a manger came out to help, but he didn't seem to be doing enough to alleviate the pressure. The food was fine. I don't get what's so exciting about the steakburger, but the bacon cheeseburger I had was fine (likely a little bit nicer than McDonald's). The egg nog shake I got was delicious, but there was wayyyyyyy too much nutmeg on the top, it actually made my stomach turn a bit. The garlic Parmesan 'add on' for my fries was just a pre-made mix shaken over the fries, which tasted okay but wasn't evenly distributed over the fries. Their prices here are great, the burger combo was only $3.99, so that's good. Despite the hustle of our sever we saw him only to take our orders, drop off our order, and drop off the check. Not his fault as he was swamped, but it was noticeable that he never came back to check in. According to my friends who eat here more often, this isn't a rare occurrence. If they could figure out their staffing needs better it would likely be a better experience.

Sorry...horrible photo. Shake and Western BBQ burger.

This review is purely for happy hour! No, silly, not THAT kind of happy hour! We're talking about the shake happy hour Monday through Friday from 2-5pm. Having a late afternoon craving for something sweet, Steak 'n Shake sent me an email with a half-price offer for any of their shakes. Talk about perfect timing! It was 4pm, so I grabbed my kiddos and we hightailed it to Glenview. Here's what we tried. Two red velvet shakes for my kiddos, and a chocolate for me. I didn't get to try the red velvet because my boys are at that no-sharing age, but my chocolate was sooooo good! The portion size was more than generous. The ice cream was rich and high quality. Nice and thick and overly chocolatey...what's not to love? My boys also raved about the red velvet. Major plus for those practicing extra safe measures these days. They delivered our shakes curbside wearing gloves! Side note: Pairs perfectly with a Western bbq bacon burger and a side of those fabulous skinny fries (I couldn't resist).

5 way chili

This might have been the very best service I have received in a Steak 'n Shake, well...ever. Maxx F. was pretty solid. Usually the service is abysmal, tonight was a different story. Quick with the refills, suggested a shake for dessert, got the order correct.. A new milestone. Why not five stars? Walking in the "Please wait to be seated" sign did not bode well. as there was only one other table seated in the restaurant. And wait we did indeed. Also, our chili bowls were served at the same time as our steakburgers. Would have been nice to have them out first. Overall though, top rate!

triple burger with no bun

I was very happy with service and quality of food here. We ordered 4 shakes during happy hour, and the triple burgers which are amazing with everything on it. The fries were hot and my kids loved them. We had some with cheese and one container of cheese was fresh and hot, the other looked like slime (my kids said that lol) I'm assuming one was our longer then the other. I took a star off bc of that. Service was friendly, we did drive thru around 2:15pm. The burger with no bun was delicious. I will definitely come back here, my husband and I both thought why haven't we tried this place earlier...

Jr. Strawberry Banana frozen yogurt shake

I've never been to Steak N Shake before so my good friend took me here. We totally pigged out and ordered a buncha food. I really loved the Jr. Strawberry Banana frozen yogurt shake and the fries. They were light and crispy! I liked their take on their Chili 5 Way. This is definitely not a place though for people who are trying to lose weight or watch their triglyceride levels. As much as we wanted to eat everything, we simply couldn't, it was too much.

The chicken tacos were delicious with a little kick to them -- my 14-year-old absolutely inhaled them. The carne asada fries were also really good and easily shareable. After not eating burgers for a few years, I had been craving a really good burger for the past couple of months. I even tried Portillo's recently, but it didn't quite hit the spot. Epic Burger, however, absolutely delivered! Not only was the food delicious, but Miguel, the manager, was incredibly welcoming and helpful, making the experience even better. The restaurant still feels pretty new. We hosted a couple of birthday parties at Meatheads when our kids were younger because of the separate party room, and it's great to see that space is still available. It continues to look like an excellent place for family gatherings and celebrations. I was disappointed when Meatheads closed, but I'm so glad Epic Burger moved in. I hope they're part of the community for many years to come. We'll definitely be back!

You can tell the staff genuinely cares about the customer experience. On my most recent visit, Verda was exceptionally kind, patient, and welcoming to every person who walked through the door. I was especially touched by how warm and thoughtful she was with my sons. That level of genuine hospitality is becoming harder to find, and it made our meal even more enjoyable. Great food brings people in the first time, but outstanding service is what keeps them coming back. The Works delivers both. It's the kind of local business worth going out of your way to support. So ordered one recently and got a small burger on a bun w cheese no fried onions. Server had no idea why it was not the usually patty melt. She was not ... seemingly interested in checking. I ate it. It is my fault for not carefully reading the new menu. Why change a basic and commonly known item like a patty melt into a bland burger? The location is great and the place has that homey supper club feel that everyone enjoys. I was really eager to come back. I came with the wife and 7 year old boy/girl twins. The little guy wasn't very hungry but loves his French fries. It's sad to say but the fries came and looked perfect. Then, after sampling one, it was hard like a rock and hard to chew. The little guy ate a few and said they were too hard to chew . The little girl got the Leprechaun cheeseburger and she liked it. It was just the right size. My wife got the Little Paddy Melt and I got the regular size one. She seemed to like the melt but said it was "too greasy." I liked mine but agreed that it was good but felt really greasy afterwards. Another thing that was nothing like I remember was the onion loaf. This one was overcooked and didn't have much taste. We had to put extra salt on it to make it passable. (Didn't this used to have a dipping sauce similar to a salad dressing or something? We weren't sure.) Anyway, we were hoping the experience would be better. The little guys did like the old arcade room. Too bad the coin slot didn't work for Donkey Kong. One of these days we will be back and I hope it can impress us like it used to in the old days.

What can improve? Everything…read more Apparently Grandpa's Place has been around for years. My dad had an office and n Glenview when I was younger and this place was there and he had never heard of it. I guess if you were local or took the Metra, then you knew. I made a reservation as there were twelve of us coming in. We arrive for our monthly Burger Club with high hopes. It's a cute place. They have a nice outdoor deck area and the inside has a nice wooden bar with tables around it with two or three additional rooms of seating, too. We asked for separate checks, and our server told us it was no problem (it was). They have a lot of burgers to choose from so we thought that this would be a great place to go. I'll say this, our server was wonderful. Super nice, really friendly, always refilling drinks. Just a wonderful experience with her. And that's where it ends. My burger came our perfectly prepared (they ask what temperature you want and I wanted medium rare). The patties are insanely thin and toppings, while fresh, are overly abundant. Fresh lettuce, tasty pickles, etc. the burger had no flavor. No salt or pepper to season it or anything. And mine was the best of the group. Others received burgers that were overcooked, had the wrong buns, came with caramelized onions, but were raw -were sent back and came back raw again - and the sides were underwhelming. I don't like ketchup, so I asked for ranch and it was thick and had a funky flavor to it. Then bills came and they were all wrong. She had mixed up every bill. Thankfully most burgers cost the same, but drinks and some side upgrades don't. We will never go back here. I have no idea how they stay in business.

The patio is just okay, in my opinion. It's small and nothing is very special about it, but on a nice, sunny day, it's perfect for lunch. I've never been a huge fan of the indoor dining area either, and I usually opt to sit at the bar if I can. The staff is very kind. They have an excellent burger. It's always cooked right and I love the bun. I add avocado to mine. The fries are great too, and always the perfect amount of crispy. I consistently used to order their Turkey Club, but at some point in the past few years, they switched from fresh cut turkey to deli turkey. It's not nearly as good anymore for that reason, and not worth ordering. The only Glenview restaurants I know of that still use fresh turkey in their sandwiches are Hackney's and Meier's Tavern. Also, their Guinness pours can be questionable depending on who's pouring. Nowadays, when I go to Grandpa's, I only ever order the Chicken Kabobs. They are absolutely delicious! If you like medium spice, I advise you to ask for them cajun-style. They are best this way! The kabobs come served over rice with the most juicy oven roasted tomatoes, and this addicting peanut sauce on the side. I pour it over the whole thing. It is a must-try and no doubt the best thing on their menu. Highly recommend Grandpa's food, as most things on the menu are enjoyable. They also have Merkt's Cheese!
