Me and the boyfriend love this steak 'n shake because it has a full menu, pretty good amount of seating, and it is open 24 hours so we can go whenever we want. Food is always pretty good. We were out here for Breyerfest from the West coast which does not have Steak n'Shake. My kids really enjoyed it so we went a few different night while we were here plus we stopped in the last time we were here. The prices are great and the portions are just right! Love the food, hate the drive thru. Me and my boyfriend live close to this place and even after 5 years of really inconsistent order accuracy and waiting for insane lengths of time in the drive thru, we still kept coming back every few months, hoping they would turnover management and hoping they would improve. But we have finally decided we are done with this place. Just got back home from the drive thru and discovered a $7 specialty burger was missing. Traffic on man o war is a nightmare with construction so going back out is not happening. One of us will just eat cereal. I love the Steak and Shake chain. I think they have a great product at a good price. This 3* review came as a surprise to me. Pros: - Good Location - Good Food at a good price - Great parking Cons: - My wife's shake was a small chocolate but was only half full. - My hot dog was very poorly made. It had pretty good taste but the look just was bad and showed a lack of attention to detail. I had a chili cheese dog with fries and my friend had a bacon steakburger and a shake, and none of it was good, even by fast food standards. Terrible customer service. I have never encountered such apathy. Shockingly bad. Waited 30 minutes in line. When I got my food there were onions on my chili though I had asked repeatedly for no onions. No big deal - accidents happen. I handed it back to the person at the window and asked if I could have one with no onions. 5 minutes later she handed it back to me and it was obvious that someone had just tried to pick the onions out, unsuccessfully. I handed it back to her and said there were still onions on it. She looked at it skeptically. I asked if they could just make a new one. This restaurant experience was split between the great and the ehhh. First the ehhh: the patty melt and double steak burger were greasy more than juicy and didn't have anything to really make them stand out. But to be fair, they don't advertise to be anything more than that. The fries were okay but again nothing special. Also, service was slow and not very attentive. Now for the great: We really only came for the milkshakes and they didn't disappoint! But the surprising star were perfectly cooked onion rings. Large rings of onion with a perfect breading ratio and even fry on them, delicious! Overall, you can get a better burger/meal at a cheaper fast food joint, but you still have to come for the milkshakes. Pro tip: order your milkshake with your meal so that you're not waiting on it forever afterwards. read more

When out in the 'burbs and need a quick bite to eat, I found myself with a limited amount of chain restaurants to choose from; even more limited were those open late. My friend and I went to the Steak n Shake to place a take-away order. We asked for milkshakes while we waited which didn't show up until the rest of the food arrived. It was our mistake for not checking the bag before we left the restaurant, but the burgers were missing some condiments, the fries were cold, and our side of mac n' cheese was forgotten. Service was fast and the good was delicious! I went with the number one combo and a chocolate milk shake. If you come here make sure you get a milk shake! Don't just have a regular soft drink. My family and I love steak in shake. We went today for lunch and were made to stand and then told to sit a table that wasn't cleaned while we watched our waitress stay in the back corner. We saw a new group come in get seated and given menus at a clean table while we were waiting now going on 10 min still seating at a dirty table with no menus and we now see our waitress taking a break so we left she saw us and started yelling to get our attention to stay. My daughter and I stopped by after her basketball game. We love the burgers and shakes but tonight was extremely slow from the ordering all the way tilwe finally got our food. They actually decided to have cars in the drive thur pull up past the window in a secondary waiting period. There were so many cars waiting that the next car could not reach the window; not sure why that strategy was selected. Total wait was over 18 mins. They forgot our drink and the burger was not what we ordered. Sad to rate a place I like 2 stars but this feedback is necessary. I ask if anything would be done about this experience and the manager offered to remake the burger. I was expecting more but at least I received an apology. I hope I can still continue to choose Steak and Shake over the countless choices that are available. Visited this location twice since the above incident and it was much improved! This place sucked big time. I will never go to them again or any of their other locations. When you have to sit in a drive through lane over twenty minutes and then they tell you your food is not ready after they charged you for it is ridiculous. Also trying to claim their computer was not working correctly so the tickets were not in the right order is no excuse. Open your pie hole and communicate with the people and you can straighten out. I pulled up to the drive thru and there was a note that it wasn't working and sorry for the inconvenience. Meanwhile, there were four servers standing by the back door doing absolutely nothing. Pulled into a parking spot to go inside and order, went to the door, and it was locked. There was a note on the door saying they were "closed for maintenance". I saw a lady at the drive thru window opening it when people pulled up and telling people they were closed and didn't know when they were going to open again. I haven't been to Steak and Shake in many years (because it's not near the places I go frequently). This location was PACKED during our visit. Since it was noon on New Years Day and many other restaurants were closed, this wasn't much of a surprise. We waited a few minutes to be seated. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was tasty and this chain publishes their nutrition information, which is always an advantage as far as I'm concerned. The only frustration to this visit was standing in line for about 10-15 minutes just to pay! There were two registers, but only one employee cashing out customers, and that employee would step away every couple of minutes to go fetch something from the kitchen to take to a patron at the counter. Perhaps it's a snap judgment on my part, but she should have had some help with the register. In fairness, for all I know, they may have been short-handed because an employee had an emergency. This is not the kind of thing that would make me decide to eschew this place in the future, but it's something the management should know about so they can have a better plan in the future. read more

First time to try this brand. Walking in I felt like it was dirty. The hostess was less than friendly as she took us to our table. I went to wash my hands and the bathroom floor looked like it had never been cleaned. Water all over the counter. I thought health regulations required bathrooms to be cleaned periodically? Steak-n-Shake has been my favorite burger joint since I was a kid, starting almost 60 years ago in St. Louis. As of today, I won't return to our local restaurant on Alysheba Way. Reward points are important to me because I live on a fixed income. The system worked until the recent remodel, and now the receipts have only 12 numbers on the bar code instead of the required 13 number needed to enter the purchase into the app. I tried to call the store and I sent an email both to the location owner and to the corporate office, and never heard back. I know this seems harsh, but it's just not that hard to get this stuff right, especially in a day and age when everything is digital. I'm headed to Culver's across the street. read more

I can always count on have good food but leaving upset that the service was lacking. Well tonight I was in Lexington, Kentucky having dinner at a Steak and Shake that I have never eaten at, I got my usual dish and as usual the food was excellent.
