Food was good however service was terrible. The waitress never refilled our drinks and never brought us our revised check. She brought our check out while we were eating after we had told her we would be ordering milkshakes to go. After waiting 15 minutes for our milkshakes and new checks we finally walked up the counter to wait another 10 minutes for her to check us out. Steak and Shake has always been a favorite for my wife and I. The Marion location is convenient for us and we look forward to stopping there. However, this last visit was not good. We had a good view of the grill area, not a good thing. The area was dirty and cluttered. We each had a sandwich, steak burger of course and a shake. The server was nice enough to get a cherry shake for me, not on the menu. Our visit was Friday April 13th. Perhaps an omen. By Sunday afternoon we were both sick. Both of us sick at same time, same sickness ( I won't describe) hardly a coincidence. Needless to say sadly Steak and Shake in Marion is off our list. We truly regret this. PS. Very dirty restaurant and a lot of chaos. A waitress was yelling at all the staff when we first sat down. She was telling coworkers to go home if they were only going to stand around. I've been here many times, and everytime I have tried a different shake, the variety is something we don't have locally where I live. I have ate from both inside and through the drive thru. Infact to mention a point one time I went to lunch with an elderly lady, she liked the shakes and we would enjoy the happy hour together. The staff inside would help me help her up from the table she and I were sitting at every time. They were very patient with my indecisiveness when choosing a shake. Or something to eat for that matter. The burger was juicy and not burnt and the fries were cooked nicely and on the table they supply all the salts spices you needed including condiments. I love the retro atmosphere. Now for the drive thru, of course it's gonna take awhile, because they are running around taking care of people inside, and making all those shakes by hand. So if you are impatient then I suggest you take a chill pill. Because there are plenty of places that will give you a smashed burger in seconds. I never ate at one of those and I had my burger look like the picture or as advertised on tv. I can say that at stake and shake I get burger worthy of a photo. And another example with the drive and service. If you want salt or seasonings you need to ask for them and if they forget all you have to do is get out of your car and walk to the window and ask! Common sense. And of course nowhere has perfect service. I went yesterday to try the s'more shake, it was on the sign but it wasn't available anymore, so instead we ordered something else. Three shakes in fact made in like 5 minutes. Thats nothing when it takes you longer than that to eat it. And it's enjoyable. I dont have a complaint about the food, its your typical fast food.. the staff. Way under staffed and completely disorganized! Drive thru computer was broke or just not working so we had to go inside to order, 45 minutes from oder till we got our food (only two orders) then we stood waiting for our milk shakes after I told them we were waiting for our milk shakes, after 15 more minutes standing we were asked what we were waiting on!!! I'm giving this a 2 only because I have eaten there before and haven't had an issue (other than the fries being cold). The last time I went there I found THREE separate hairs in my fries. I couldn't finish my fries or my burger and now every time I pass by this Steak 'n Shake my stomach turns. When we told the waitress she stated, "that's disgusting" and gave me a free meal, which is good because I couldn't eat anything, but my fiancee still had to pay for his order. Very disappointed during a trip when we stopped thinking the kids were well behaved, we would treat them to milkshakes. We waited 22 minutes after ordering, while several employees stood around talking instead of anyone helping with the 1 milkshake mixer....poor service, except the kind girl who apologized and explained that there was only 1 machine. read more

Went to eat there , well before we got our food I went to wash my hands, wow it was so dirty, looked like it was never cleaned, I would .... myself before using it, then got the food we ordered and it looked so bad we refused to eat it and left. This Steak and Shake has terrible service. We waited 35 minute for one shake and 45+ minutes for our food.

Went in on a slow week night (maybe 2-3 other tables in the entire restaurant) and got terrible food and service. I'm a server myself and am never picky about small things, however, our server completely forgot about my boyfriend's drink and another server had to basically take over for her multiple times. I felt really bad for the other girl working because she had her own tables but kept having to pick up her co worker's slack. The kitchen was no better. Both burgers were VERY undercooked. I normally get my steaks mid rare, however, I don't trust ground beef enough to get it above mid well and this was medium-mid rare. One of our shakes was wrong as well but that's something I could have cared less about. read more

Steak 'n Shake does yes have bad service but, it makes up for it in their steak burgers and shakes, if you want good food and in a rush go through the drive through. The drive through doesn't have bad service because there are no waitresses and if you have the time go in and sit in a booth as this is the best seating option. 5/5 on food alone. 5/5 on seating. I love the food here at this steak and shake. My problem although is with the service, I ordered a vanilla and chocolate milkshake. I had eaten all of my food before it came out, but it was a banana and chocolate milkshake, and I don't like banana so I sent it back. The spouse and I dined here today. We will NEVER be going back. When we arrived it said please wait to be seated. So we waited for 15 minutes before we just seated ourselves. After that it took another 10-15 minutes for them to even acknowledge we were there. I got a simple grilled chicken salad which looked good until I started to eat it and realized it has raw chicken in it. My spouse got a milkshake, he ended up throwing it up. Which is odd for him since he is military and is use to eating disgusting food. This food was by far the worst we have ever had. Never ever, ever, ever again! I did the drive-thru here a few years ago with my family and the service was so bad we actually pulled out of the drive-thru line before getting our milkshakes. My dad and I decided to give this place another shot years later and we went inside to eat. The service was just as bad, and it took forever to even get a waiter or waitress to take our drink order. The steakburger wasn't bad (at least it was warm), but we tried to order milkshakes to go. They were terrible. I'm glad we tried them before paying the bill and walking out the door because they were so disgusting that we left them on the table and asked for them to be removed from the bill. The manager said she knew what the waitress did wrong. I'm sorry, but if the waitress can't make them right, she shouldn't be making them at all! I am a huge fan of Steak and Shake. However, tonite was an issue even though the food was great, as usual. I went thru the drive thru at 8:08 pm and ordered 2 burgers. No other vehicles in the drive thru line and very few in the lot - apparently dinner hour was over. The young lady at the window stated "$7." and 30 something cents, turned around and continued the conversation she was having with other employees. Finally, a minute or so later she opened the window and handed me my change from a $10. Not a word, turned around and continued the conversation. When bag was ready, opened the window and handed it to me while turning to continue the conversation. Not a "Thank you" or "thanks" or come again - nothing. Customer service is not just for seated guests. Should be the same as the the price is the same outside as inside. This, in my opinion, was EXTREMELY rude. I tried to say thank you and (sarcastically) you're welcome but the window was already closed. I will remember her and, when & if I stop again, I will tell her in person how impressed I wasn't! read more

Terrible service. I stopped here while traveling a couple months ago. Went inside and ordered a shake to go. 15 minutes later someone saw me waiting and asked if they could help me. I told them what I had ordered and they found my shake sitting on a counter. It seems no one knew who it belonged to. Needless to say it was no longer the nice, thick shake I love from Steak n Shake. Fast forward to today. My husband and I were traveling and did not have a lot of time. Went inside and ordered lunch to go. After waiting 20 minutes my husband inquired and our order was sitting on a counter on plates but no one knew which table to take it to so it sat there. It was put in to go containers and we hit the road. Ended up eating cold food and another runny milkshake. :( Also, while we were waiting for our order we observed people having to wait a good length of time for someone to seat them and the same for people wanting to pay. I have both good and bad opinions of the specific spot. I love burgers so this is a treat to me and my kids. Also the price comes out to be less than most fast food joints that get old quickly. Steak and Shake is always a good atmosphere to bring friends and kids. They have a good selection of $4 meals infact they most seem to be anymore. Drinks are not included in the price. I love the double cheese meal and sometimes get a cup of chili. The chili is the best.. I can eat this and feel satisfied so much I can barely eat my actual meal when it arrives. We have never had poor food experience here although the service is 50/50 on quality. We were coming here weekly to eat in the evenings sometimes 2x a week when we had to be in town. Most times there was such a panic/rush with the servers that they were dropping huge trays of milkshakes busting all over the floor, constantly apologizing the same lines to customer after customer.. it got old and sadly expected. There is a lot of crashing around in kitchen/dishes are also.. once we were seated next to the wall of the kitchen and some dropped something and it crashed so loud we were startled and scared.. customers constantly bug eyed looking around at the chaos going on. I also had a few times where there were people piling up to be seated while say 10 tables were stacked with dishes and no one was cleaning them off. One of these times we were seated in a booth (our preferred) and both tables surrounding us were piled high dirty ..the disgusting thing about seeing dirty stuff sitting around is that the tables that were dirty when we were seated were still dirty when we left.. how gross is that.. I felt like getting a bus tub and cleaning them off myself.. I see a few good people serving but a few constantly are not cut out for this type of work. We will go back.. of course its my fav low cost burger joint when we have time to sit.. but step up the training.. we want to feel relaxed.. but it seems its become so stressful just watching people do their work. read more
