I've taken a long hiatus from this location as I got really tired of waiting 45 minutes in the car lane for them to help 5 cars in front of me, and then I discovered Freddy's not far away that has about the same high quality food and they can make it and serve it as fast as McD's. I decided to give it another try last night, it had recently closed over some big controversy for not offering the lower price menu, and now it has quietly reopened and I don't know who is running it. Guess what, they are still not honoring the low priced menu. The gal running the ordering speaker in the car lane was like a car salesman. I asked to order the 4 dollar menu item a triple with fries but take out the fries (and hoped for a discount). Nope, in fact, it cost more to get the triple by itself by about 60 cents. So I modified and said OK throw in some fries for me so I can get the 4 dollar special. She does so, rings it up, 4.99 was my new total. What? She said it's 4.59 plus tax. I asked her what happened to the 4 dollar menu out at the speaker. She said I'll have to get the manager, she did, he said, oh well it's 60 cents more if you order cheese. Except I didn't order cheese. He said OK and finally got the order down to the advertised price, and had to recook the burger without the cheese (then threw in cold fries to boot). I told him it's no wonder they take 10 to 15 minutes per car (I sat in the lane 30 minutes with 3 cars in front of me, I was at the window for about 5 minutes. It's not because it's so hard to make a burger to order, it's because they are screwing people and overcharging and then when they want the order fixed it's a big manager involved production, and I'm betting most people pay the higher price and don't even realize it til they get home. I use to come here all the time when it first opened. Where there was great customer service and it was clean/neat. This was the place to be to grab a steak burger, a milkshake and it was delicious! Now it's absolutely horrible. The booths are all dirty, and torn apart with duct tape to cover it. The floors look like it has not been mopped in days. I ordered the 3 sliders and fries. First the waiter acted very unhappy. That killed my mood and my friend. When the food came out the buns on my sliders were very stale and it was hard to even eat. I ordered the parmesan on the fries and I didn't even get that. This place is not the steak and shake that it used to be. I won't be coming back. read more

Here from out of state visiting family where we have Steak and Shake restaurants. Have to say this is the dirtiest one we have ever been to. We were sat at a table where the seats and floor were covered with old fries and crumbs and when we asked if it could be cleaned up the staff looked at us like we were asking for a kidney. They wiped down the seats but left all the crap on the floor. It wasn't just our table either, as we looked around we noticed the place in general was just gross. We came at 4 pm, only a few customers and staff just standing around. I would hope the owner would take more pride in this store and not tarnish the Steak and Shake reputation. After sitting there a witnessing the kitchen staff touch multiple surfaces and then the food with the same pair of gloves, flies flying around and a front door covered in thick handprints as well as super slow service, we got up and left. This place is filthy and disgusting. The lobby was closed but there were no signs that said that except on the inside door. We went through the drive through and they would not tell us our order total until we got to the window. We waited in line for a good 15 minutes without moving. We finally got to the window, and had to wait another 5-10 minutes. While we waited, we looked around, and the kitchen was gross and dirty. The sink had black and brown filth all around it. The window was almost not even see through with all the stains on it. The lady at the window was brisk and crass. We got our food, and they gave us the wrong shake. Then we went to eat the fries, not only were the portions a rip off, they were also over cooked, dry, hard, and cold. We went back though the drive through to fix our order. The lady didn't say anything to us, and just smiked and got the stuff fixed. Then a different guy handed us our shake, but his shirt and outfit was nasty with stains, and burnt chunks all over it. My husband has always raved about how great Steak and Shake is. Clearly he's never been to this location. I swung through on my way home from work for a burger. Went through the drive through. I was waiting on one single burger. No fries, no shake, just needed a protein fix. I waited so long, after paying, for my ONE burger in the drive through that I had time to check the news, I turned off my car, I chatted with my spouse..... Fifteen minutes later, after watching the very crowded kitchen crew of teenagers flirt and wrestle each other (with their food prep gloves) while prepared food just sat in the "ready queue", I finally got my burger, made wrong, and left. Would rather drive out of my way to a competitors, where I'll get timely service and not be worried about wrestling teenagers conatiminating my food during their flirting wrestling matches.... read more

I think I have to hand it to Steak in Shake in developing a good brand of fantasy, because there has been so much word of mouth regarding the novelty and bliss that comes with visiting one of these restaurants. Except when you actually do visit them, there needs to be a notice at the door which states that each person must be responsible for developing their own personal fantasy and nostalgic memory independent of the Steak and Shake corporation. Furthermore, Steak and Shake is not responsible in any way in contributing to this fantasy and that the paying of money for food should not constitute an expectation that it does. So now that the hype of is gone, Steak N Shake gets one star for a different reason. The food sucks. Now I'm not under any illusion about any fast food joint, but the floor of Steak n Shake was especially slippery from all the grease. The burger was just incredibly bland and the fries were meh. I just think there are places where you can get better fries, burgers, and shakes. They do have a lot of variety on the shakes, but if that is all your going for, again there are better places. read more

I wish I'd have read some of these reviews before visiting twice. To date, I've had a hot salad and a cold burger and fries. At least the one shake I had was the right temperature. Very stoked the first time I went. During the week and during lunch hour was quite surprised how quick they attended us and brought us our food. The food was great as were the shakes. The servers ehhh weren't the greatest but tended to us quickly. Anyway, fast forward to today went to dine in here again. HORRIBLE!!! There was only two servers, both of which were completely miserable. There was one who looked liked sideshow bob who just had the face of death. Walked past us multiple times without acknowledging our presence. It took them almost 10 minutes to just sit us. The other server we had was just over it, she was there just to be there. The food was garbage this time we waited roughly about 25 to get our food. The hamburger meat was legit burnt. Had a very crispy texture to it. The shakes were half assed. I don't know why the ceo hasn't stepped in and taken initiative to who is hired as management. The team sucks all together, even the cooks look miserable. Ok so this location has been surrounded by controversy. It is Corp owned now. In the last few weeks they dropped the cheap menu, I believe got rid of breakfast, and reduced their hours. As someone who grew up w this restaurant for 45 years now including eating at the very first one in Normal IL, I cut these guys a lot of slack. With the more expensive (but still very reasonable) menu I believe they may have curtailed the demand side of the equation. Last time I was there post the changes things were better. Not a mob scene, cleaner, was served right away. Let's hope they can sort things out and get back to a reasonable sustainable experience for all involved. We had our first Stake and Shake experience in Kansas about 10 years ago. It was on of the best burgers for the price and the service was exceptional. We have tried the Colorado locations without much trouble. By he Sheridan location off Hamden is like a different company all together. We had a bad experience a while back but decided to give it another try. What a mistake that was our food was served cold this was a slow night and not very busy. We found a hair in our onion rings. When I went to pay the ask how my meal was and I stated not good. The waitress just looked at me and didn't respond. This was a really good restaurant but that time had passed. At one point we got at to pay for our shakes Then they told us our food with coming out.
