Believe it or not the food is actually pretty good and the main reason I go there is obviously for the milkshakes. However the service is very slow and a little careless if you ask me. It takes forever to get your food and the drive-thru takes even longer. It's really busy because it's there a truck stop and next to a store as well and if you want something to eat the food is good and it's relatively cheap, I went yesterday and got two meals and two shakes and it was only 20 bucks so it's cheaper than any other fast food place you'll go to. S&S used to be a pleasant experience with table service, friendly servers, and good food. Now? Zero human interaction. Stand at a kiosk and order off a screen. Get your own drink. When the food is ready they yell your order number across the "dining room" and you go get it yourself. An even worse version of McDonalds. And the kiosk asks for a tip. I haven't even interacted with a human. Who or what am I tipping? The kiosk? New rule. If I have to stand up and order I'm not tipping. The young lady, Erica, who took our order was pleasant. We got the double cheeseburger (mayo & lettuce) & applesauce and the triple burger (catsup & mustard) with fries. My burger had one piece of lettuce and adequate mayo. Husband had to use one of the 5 for fries catsup packets for adequate catsup. Hamburger had only a dab of mustard. Came here for milkshakes and I'm really quite thankful that this is all we decided to get. From the bar seats you can see the head cook making all the food. The burgers started out as quarter inch thick burgers that by the time he flattened them with his spatula they were thinner then pancakes and all the juice he just flattened out of them. To add on top of this, he also left the refrigerator for the cheese and meat open the entire 30 minutes we were there. It was also open when we first arrived (we never saw it closed) and it was still open when we left. There's absolutely no way any of that was at proper temperature at that point. It sure didn't look it when he pulled the meat patties out, that's for sure! It was downright disgusting to watch! We eventually got our milkshakes and to be honest, they weren't that great either. People were being extremely rude to the poor waitresses that were doing their jobs and being kind. Felt awful for them. Our food came out hot and fresh! Weird little kiosk that you have to order from. Then they call you to pick up your order but the kid doing that didn't have the knowledge what to do when the order was wrong. So you walk around the corner to another counter and try to get the attention of someone there to correct the order. I recently stopped in to this Steak N Shake for a lunch break while on a road trip. It is right off I-75. This was my first time at a Steak N Shake. I am now a fan. The place is bright and decorated cool It is like going back in time to step inside. The service was friendly and prompt. You get seated and place your order with the waitstaff . The portabella Burger was fantastic. The Foot Long Chicago Dog was outstanding. The Taco Salad was delicious and the milk shakes are great. The prices are decent. Now I see why this place only has two stars. Went to the counter and ordered a cheeseburger to go it's 7:40 pm 8 min later the guy starts cooking it really..... and they are out of lettuce tomato and pickle.. once again this is the chain restaurant really. The whole time the guy is cooking a burger which is the manager he is yelling at the employees not professional at all. 8:00 still waiting for my TO GO order and it's not Busy only 10 customers sitting down... 21 min later I get my to go Burger. What was I thinking? I stopped because I liked the name of the place. What could go wrong with a Steak and a Shake? I would've known if I had checked the yelp reviews, but driving down the interstate at 80 mph made checking reviews kind of tough. I pulled off the highway and arrived to a gas station with a Steak N Shake connected to it. It looked promising. As I got to the door, I saw a sign on the door saying kids eat free. I couldn't resist. The family and I went in. The host was missing. No one wanted to seat us. After standing there for about 5 minutes, they finally seated usand were given menus. Where was the steak? The menu was missing steak. No sirloin, no ribeye. Just hamburgers, chicken strips, and stuff for kids. I ordered a bacon lovers burger. My wife ordered their chicken strips. The daughter got their childrens hot dog. The food took a while to come out. Their burger was nasty. The patty was dry. Other than bacon, my burger didn't have much in it. Even the bacon couldn't help the burger. My wife's chicken strip was dry and also tasteless. The only thing that was good was my daughters hot dog. But, that was her opinion. Don't let the name fool you. There is no steak here. It is a burger joint with bad burgers. You are better off skipping this place and going straight to McDonalds. read more

Let me start by saying that I should have walked out when I went into the grossest bathroom I've ever seen in a restaurant. However, it is Thanksgiving day and our choices are limited. Worst food. Worst restaurant. Worst management ever. We were the only people eating, 30 minutes for dry, overcooked food. The coffee smelled and tasted foul and the food on the floor was not only old and being stepped on over and over by staff, but was everywhere. Love Steak n Shake, but this location is not a true Steak n Shake. Missing 4 items during drive thru so had to go inside and fix. The sweet tea tasted awful, the onions were old, the fries were old and cold. Everything really tasted like it was made hours ago, which should not be done unless you are busy and need to make things ahead of rush time- and we were their only customers at the time. So the 8 people behind the counter are just making the food and shakes and handing it out. It is 3:30 in the afternoon not a busy time. It has been a while since I ate at a Steak and Shake. I remember always getting a good burger and a shake a a good price. The best part was always the experience. It was a little like going back in time. A good milkshake in a old style glass. Today I was seriously let down. I went to an old style burger place to be meet with the only way to order was from a kiosk. No human interaction! When I finally got my burger . They called my number. I went and retrieved it from what appeared to be an angry overworked young lady. Then I had to wait on my shake while my burger got cold. The gentleman that brought me my burger was obviously overworked also. What I sat down to eat I almost went back up to the counter thinking they had only given me a single burger when I ordered a double. Then I realized the two paper thin burgers were held together by a piece of cheese. The burger wasn't bad. The chocolate shake was good. I wish there was a way we could give like a negative 17 review because a one actually gives merit to this place to which is not due. Where to begin? I have been here three or four times and each time has been a disappointing adventure. I came to the drive-through one evening in order to shake which was all I wanted at the time. When I tasted it, it tasted like dishwashing soap. I was on my way to a meeting and was late and could not turn around and do anything about it so I called the manager of the store. She said she didn't know why it tasted like that or how that would even happen but she would be more than happy to replace it and I said I don't know when I'm coming back through this area but whatever. When I did come back through a month later they didn't have my name written down anywhere didn't know who I was or what happened. But they ended up giving me the shake that I never drank in the first place. Well, rather, a replacement. Nothing else just that. I also ordered a meal deal which I paid for the fries were cold old and nasty. I knew not to call back and say anything about it because it will go nowhere. I wait six months and go back again this time ordering breakfast. A huge mistake there too. I asked for my eggs over medium I got them over super hard. I brought it to their attention and the bacon on my plate look like it had been under a warmer for about four days and almost disintegrated at touch. I did not eat the whole thing and they company for the breakfast. So I guess that was a good thing. The last couple of times that I have been here one time I stood and waited to be seated somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes. I finally gave up and walked out. Now, keep in mind, the place was not packed and was not super busy but the staff was just hanging out talking instead of seating people. Now today I come back in to try just one more time to place a to go order. Well, that went over like a turd in a punch bowl. I stood at the counter at the register watching all the servers in the cooks and everyone chilling and hanging out... and again, after standing there for 10 or 15 minutes I just turned and walked out. Listen folks, I don't expect a whole lot from a fast food restaurant, but I do expect my order to at least be taken or bare minimum sit down somewhere. One younger waitress tried to help us early but was publicly admonished for "taking a table" from an older woman who continued to make us wait. Our food came out wrong and the manager refused to come talk to us. Instead, she sent the waitress back and forth passing messages between us. We will NEVER eat here again. Furthermore, Steak and Shake should be ashamed of allowing their brand to be desecrated this way.
