We've been having good experiences recently but after today, we'll give it a rest. We walked in, and were greeted by the two people working behind the counter as we sat at a table. And then...nothing. I looked over at them, they looked back at me. No water. No menus. No action of any kind. Just them engrossed in their conversation. And not busy serving others--we were the only patrons in the place. So, after 5 min we got up and left. One of them wished us a nice day as we walked out. This review does not reflect the staff. The staff were kind and helpful. The food itself was not digestible. I decided to try the vegetable Bao bun and the beef bao bun. Both seemed as if they had been sitting in the warmer all day. Not sure if they were the same buns that were maybe sitting in there from the day before, but it tasted old, although very soft because they were sitting in the warmer and being "steamed", you could tell that there was no authentic or at least a good flavor. I spent around $20 and took one bite of each and threw them away, unfortunately. Only suggestion I would add is maybe when a customer orders drinks, make the drink first since it takes some time and then put the food on the tray so it's semi warm when they take it to sit down and eat. My buns were not even look warm. Unfortunately, I won't be back to this establishment, though I will add the mini dumplings on someone else's order looked great! read more

Need dumplings locally, here's the place! Ordered dumplings ahead of time and they were ready on time. Staff is great. They do a great job of packing all items and still warm when you get home. Cucumbers are a must here! Popcorn chicken and rice was great too - crispy chicken. Steamed bao are great and really full! Fan of the steamed pork and shrimp dumplings. Seared pork and cabbage are great too! Had the chili dumplings and they were super spicy but good. Finished the meal with the sesame red bean dumplings and having them with the honey sauce was really good! Dumpling size is large size and good portion size too! read more

I am only posting this review in regard to the boba! Hands down this is one of my favorite locations in Franklin for milk teas. Roughly around 7.00 a piece I feel like you get your money's worth. As always consistency is high on the list for taste. Customer service is always really good as well. The restaurant its self is on the smaller side, but has plenty of seating if you choose to stay. Steam Boys also has a full menu to offer. I have tried their Bao Buns in the past. They personally are a different experience food wise so I have to find the one I like. As far as the teas go I highly recommend Steam Boys for all your fruit tea/ milk teas needs. read more

The man at the Franklin location he said he was the owner when I brought this back after picking it up tonight he could have cared less. He told me "that's the dish" and looked at me like I was an idiot. I have ordered this dish from the Franklin location when it came out several times and it was good. But this is unacceptable to serve something that has more fat in it than it does edible beef. This location has gone down hill fast and it's a shame. And the way the guy handled the complaint was very rude and dismissive. Im a single mom and my son and I have always enjoyed being able to go across the street to get dinner for dumpling nights. (Eating out isn't something I can afford to do all the time) I hope this location can get a pop in visit to inspect quality of dishes because I've had consistent issues the last 3 months and it hasn't always been like this. We would give Steam Boys a 4-star rating as it's definitely on the pricier side, and costs can add up quickly. The sliced beef rice bowl, which came recommended, was disappointing - too bland and with too much rice and onions compared to the beef. The crispy chicken gua bao was enjoyable, but the true standout is the seared pork bao buns which were juicy, flavorful, and absolutely worth trying. The boba and milk teas are phenomenal on their own; we loved the sea salt Vietnamese coffee (my personal favorite) and the sweeter black tiger sugar latte. We will likely return for drinks and the pork buns! The ambiance is very modern - bright, open, airy, bamboo wooden pieces bringing a sense of calm. Love it! It's a quick way to get some dumplings aka gyoza . Great taste and very filling. We ordered the chicken pan fried dumplings and soup dumplings only offered if you dine in. The soup dumplings are Loaded with broth so be careful not to spill it all over. I recommend a bowl or dish to catch all the broth. The casing is a thick noodle, super filling. The menu is awesome and exactly what we want. I had the seafood soup and the shrimp and scallops were so fresh! And the noodles and broth are perfect match. The dine-in soup dumplings are fantastic! Have you ever really looked forward to a popular spot expanding into your area, and then left, sadly, a bit disappointed? Well friends, there's a new Steam Boys in south Franklin. Ordered delivery a sampling of dishes to cover their menu. Arrived well packaged and hot. The seared pork and cabbage hot dumpling bowl was a pile of their dumplings in a bit of spicy sauce. Probably my favorite thing about steam boys dishes was that if they said hot, or you selected hot, the dish was going to have a good level of spice. Not overwhelming, just a pleasant little burn. The dumpling bowl is a repeat order. The beef noodle soup, selected 'hot', was a quite generous portion. Lots of noodles, good sized pile of big beef chunks. The broth is really flavorful, nice little hit of heat in it. Caution that it has a lot of oil in it. In the restaurant, I think that'd be a negative, but at home, I could easily spoon the oil floated to the surface off. Beef chunks were mostly gristly and fatty, hard to cut bite sized, really ended up being just a few good bites. I'd get the soup again, but would go for the seafood instead. The seared chicken dumplings were also good. The dumpling sauce makes them, so I'd recommend including extra. I wouldn't say there's anything particularly special about them, but they are decent dumplings. Didn't care for the seared 'signature' pork bao. Some of that might just be personal preference, but I found the dough to be too much and too chewy. The pork inside was one solid meatball, so it fell right out and was a small challenge to capture to cut and eat with the dough. Pass. The gua bao chicken cutlet suffered a little from chewiness, and again, I realize chewiness is part of the bao experience, it was just a bit much with steam boys. The gua bao, though, was redeemed by the pleasant spice and crunch of the fried chicken. Don't think I'd order again, but an ok bun. Not going to rush back, but it's certainly one of the better local choices for dumplings and noodle soup, so next time I'm in the mood for soup and dumplings, it'll be one to consider. read more

As others have noted, the service is friendly but the food is very sub par. The Dough in the Vegetable Bao was extremely unpleasant and well below the standard I was expecting. The beef I had in my main dish was very greasy and the whole thing was barely above room temperature. Will not eat at this establishment again. read more

Let me preface my review by saying my husband and FIL are Chinese. I wanted to invite them to lunch for some good bao and noodle soup. Since I'm not from the area, I checked reviews before choosing where to go. Honestly, the food was bad. The seafood noodle soup was requested to be mild but it was spicy yet tasteless. The beef bao was so bad I couldn't eat it. The only thing that was edible was the chicken dumplings and the coconut milk tea. Regarding the service, the server was struggling just to take the order. We were 3 people who ordered 2 seafood soups, 2 baos, a coconut milk tea and 1 chicken dumpling order. Not that difficult. If the server is new, then I can understand. Was looking forward to try this place but it was very disappointing. My sister and I got 2 salt Vietnamese iced coffees and an order of popcorn chicken. The total was $25. Both of the coffees were too sweet to drink. The condensed milk overpowered the drink so much to where I couldn't really taste the coffee. The popcorn chicken was super salty and very soggy. The only good thing was the complimentary plate of edamame and water they gave us with our order. Left the place feeling like I just downed a bottle of syrup and a bowl of salt. Okay it's fair to say it's not as good as the major metropolitan dumpling shops in NYC or the West Coast, like a previous commentator has done, but we're in middle TN and for a middle TN suburb the dumplings are very good and the price is reasonable.
