While traveling through Sulphur during the lunch hour we decided to try out Hollier's Cajun Kitchen for some local flavor, the parking lot was mostly filled but we were able to get seated without a wait. After viewing the lunch buffet we decided to give it a try to save time. It seemed today most of the customers were locals comprised of contractors and maybe plant workers, there was no doubt this place is a local favorite. After placing our drink orders we proceeded to the steam table and grabbed our plates, most of the food seemed fresh and definitely hot, the kitchen was in the process of refilling items as we served ourselves. Honestly there was nothing bad here but after trying a few bites I was reaching for the hot sauce to jazz things up a bit. I thought the prices were a little steep considering the portions we chose, if you're one that will make multiple trips to the food bar it's probably a good deal. Let me start with the buffet was ok, not great. The gumbo roux was a little too dark for my taste and had a slight burned flavor. The cocktail shrimp were floating in water, so I passed. The fried fish was ok, tasted like Swai, which is a Vietnamese catfish. There menu just states fried fish and not the place it came from. The fried shrimp were ok. Frog legs were good and fresh. The other seafood buffet in town closed and it's hard to believe this one is still open. I thought the other was better. I would work on the gumbo roux. Was staying in hackberry for fishing trip, came in town to score food and found this place on yelp and glad I did! They had an all you can eat buffet with fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, fried fish, baked fish, fried frog legs, dessert etc. I think it's only on weekends idk tho. Price was really reasonable for the food you get. Service was good and so was the quality of food. Very very impressed with the place and hope to get back that way soon! In town fishing and wanted some Cajun food to start the trip. It did not disappoint. We got the mild Boursin to start. It is mild but still has a tiny kick. Then got the Buffet. They were switching to the dinner Buffet at 2pm. It seemed to be about the same foods. Good variety and good flavor. Nothing seemed to have mild flavor, everything had really good flavor. Stopped by for lunch because I was craving seafood. I found this on yelp and the reviews seemed good. I ordered the seafood platter and it was partially okay. Batter was decent, however there was no seasoning. That blew me away. I drove from Texas to Louisiana and for the 1st time I picked the worst seafood restaurant. My waitress started off real good then disappeared, I had to ask another waiter for a refill. Did I mention they put frog legs on my platter and no shrimp. Didn't eat those and neither did the cats. Hmm 10 minutes after leaving I had to go potty. That food went right through me. Stomach started grumbling again. Had to stop again. Got home barely to go again. First time here and it did not disappoint! The seafood buffet looked amazing, however we weren't in the mood for seafood. We started with fried pickles. Yum! Then I got the burger which was so good! And my husband got the chicken fried steak sandwich with a side of white gravy that he put on top of the steak. He loved it. Our waitress was so nice and friendly. Well it's been many years since I have had dinner at Hollier's. We arrived around 4:10-4:15 we were immediately sat at a table in the back section. Note we were the only people in that section when we arrived. We ordered appetizers, around 4:20 and at about 4:30 we placed our entree orders. Unfortunately, it seemed as if every waitress had a chip on her shoulder tonight. The thin woman with dark hair and glasses seemed aggravated when a customer asked what was on the buffet, yet had no issue toting a toddler on her hip the entire time we were there which turned into almost 2 hours. My husband ordered steak and shrimp, I ordered fish and shrimp. You will see on our ticket that we were given the senior citizen discount for the horrible service. Instead of a manager and I am assuming it was the toddler toting woman with the walk-in talkie coming and apologizing for waiting about an 1 1/2 for a steak that arrived cold and about 1/4 inch thick and steak and shrimp they could have clearly gathered from the buffet, after waiting 1 1/2 for our food and salads she graciously approved the senior citizen discount for our waitress. I have attached the receipt which clearly shows we ordered at 4:29 pm not what the waitress wrote. This was our first time here as we are not locals. I will begin with the service. Shelly was our waitress. It was her 2nd day but she was great and friendly. It was truly a pleasure to have her as our waitress. If she didn't know an answer to our questions she was happy to find out for us. The other waitstaff was friendly and helpful also. When they weren't busy waiting on tables they were busy cleaning and taking care of things. NOT playing on their phones and treating you like an inconvenience. My meal came with a salad, gumbo and entree. It was properly served like a fine dining establishment. The salad came out. After we were done the gumbo was served. Then our entree was served a little bit after that. Our salad was served and we actually got to finish it before they brought out the gumbo. Then our entree was properly spaced out from our salads and gumbo. It really displeases me when I pay for a meal that has multiple courses and it's served all at once. The staff and cooks have a very good understanding of timing food. Now onto the food. I ordered the seafood platter with a side salad and onion rings. The salad was simple but the veggies were fresh. The croutons were really good crunchy and garlicky. The ranch dressing was a little thin to me but it wasn't overly sweet as many places are. The onion rings were great. I prefer my onion rings on the thin side and these were perfect. The batter had a great taste and stayed on the onion ring instead of crumbling off. The fried shrimp were cooked perfectly! They were plump and juicy while the crust was crunchy and not caky. The fish were cut and cooked just to my liking. It was white and flaky with a breading not to thick. The frog legs were the best I have had in over 15 years!!! They were meaty and had a clean flavor, not fishy. The hush puppies were really good as well. The outside was crunchy with a moist, crumbly inside. Really, really good. Wish they gave me more than 2 on my plate. For the parts I could do without. These are the reason I did not give a 5 star review. The crab cake was nice and crispy on the outside and had lots of crab in it. Sadly it had lots of other things in it which made it too busy on the pallet. Also the filling was too gummy for me. The seafood gumbo was missing flavor in the broth. It had enough heat but was missing the extra notes of goodness. It was made with salad shrimp which was sad and left them over done. The roll they serve was terrible. One bite was it and I'm a bread eater. They should just skip the roll and give extra hush puppies. I will definitely be back again next time we are in town. Very unprofessional. Went to this establishment with a small party (4 families but one paid for their drinks and left shortly after we arrived). We sat down, ordered our drinks, RECEIVED our drinks, and then put in our food orders. After we ordered, a soccer team gets placed in the same room, this soccer team we had just beat in the semi-finals game for our league. An hour and a half (roughly) after we sat down, the waitress for the other team comes over to our table and asks us to move. My table responds that we are with the similarly dressed table and that that is our party. The lady then moves and asks once again for us to move. Our party collectively left the establishment as we all felt this was incredibly unprofessional of that waitress. When we made it to the hostess stand, we learned that the waitress hadn't brought it up with anyone as the hostesses and our own waitress were confused on why we were leaving. The other team had nothing on their tables; no food, no drinks, only their menus. Would not recommend for out of town folks or families of visiting sports teams. High high amount of salt, even the steamed white rice was salted!!! If you order seafood gumbo or any type of Gumbo, shrimp is size of a penny and the broth was as runny as though it's watered down......horrible experience!! Would give this place a 1/2 star if available on this site, only great thing that really stood out was our waitress, she was fabulous, very kind and genuinely welcoming.
