By Anchorage standards, the coffee is pretty good. I've had a cap and a latte. This cafe stands out for having lots of seating, both indoor and outdoor, and power. Finally, a coffee shop that does not have a boring tea menu! I was so impressed they had 10 different teas with various varieties, and then they steeped it with a timer. I saw incredible artwork that the staff were doing with local mochas and café drinks. It was such a fun experience going here. They actually have a Chemex and a coffee that you can get that's made with a Chemex set up, I was impressed by that. This is a great place to take friends to talk. The only negative aspect that I could find with this location is that I couldn't find a power source easily in a wall if you are working on your laptop. read more

Friendly, fast staff. Knowledgeable and genuinely nice. Espresso is perfect. It isn't as bitter as the bucks and their machine pours with the perfect crema on the top. The whole place has a modern vibe to it with plenty of space to sit and study, chat with friends, or, like me, grade the torrent of English papers that have suddenly descended upon me. They have lots of options for the coffee fanatic including the trusty French Press or the new, jazzy versions like V60, Siphon, and Chemex. The thing that impressed me the most was their hot water boiler that has constant water at the perfect temperature for pour overs and such. They did look at me weird when I said I love my aero press. This is my go-to coffee shop, even when not in South Anchorage. Main reason - coffee is great. Can't say I have really tried their drip coffee, but great fancy drinks. Iced brew is on tap but also available in growlers and now they also sell canned iced coffee (which has also been sold recently at Costco). They also have kombucha on tap. I think menu items have been fewer during COVID, but they previously had freshly made sandwiches. Now, seems like more in the case and a variety of pastries, which are discounted later in the day. Space is large. Lots of tables and spread out. Good wifi. Minimal plug access if you are laptop user. There are rotating artist displays month-to month, often with pieces for sale. Staff are always friendly. Wait can be a little longer than other places, but it is worth it! Gender-neutral bathroom. Wine shop attached if you want to pick something up while there. read more

I stopped by here this past Sunday with my father for my morning coffee. Steamdot Coffee Roasters is located in a strip mall right off of the old Seward Highway. Whenever we first walked into the place you could really smell their sausage and boy did it smell good! The inside of this place is fairly open with a counter to order your drinks and tons of other seating. Since Steamdot had the words "coffee lab" on its sign, it wasn't a surprise to me that you could order single origin coffees in a variety of ways including v60 or chemex. After looking over their four choices of coffee, I decided to go with a v60 of the coffee from Ecuador due to its description of citrus notes. I then watched the barista wet the filter, measure out the correct amount of coffee and make it. All told it was maybe 5 minutes from ordering until I had my coffee and was out the door. As for the coffee itself, I liked it. It was strong and smooth and yet had those citrusy notes which were described. You could also tell that it had been recently roasted by the taste which was nice. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my coffee and loved all the different single origin and brewing options. read more

I come to Anchorage from Fairbanks from time to time and I continue to be in awe of the high quality of the coffee served, the friendly (and child/family friendly) atmosphere, but mostly the outstanding and consistently masterful coffee drinks. I recently re-visited SteamDot with my grand daughters (I always bring them here for Hot Chocolate and whipped cream with sprinkles - their favorite!) My coffee drink of choice has always been the Cappuccino which, owing to the expert work of Caleb, the outstanding barista, remains one of the finest examples of this benchmark coffee drink in the world! An enhancement to the taste and mouthfeel of the Cappuccino is the expertly executed latte art performed by Caleb - a treat for the eyes and the palate! Several photos are attached to this review. So. Last time I was here, I ordered a latte in a mug so I could sit down and relax and enjoy some coffee. Once I sat down in one of the chairs I noticed something moving on the ground. Lo and behold it was a live mouse in what I assumed was a mouse trap. I told one of the baristas, who did not address the issue immediately but at a rather leisurely place as if it was a normal occurrence. I took my latte to the bar. I haven't been back since. Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest in hopes it doesn't happen again. That said, I do enjoy SteamDot's coffee more than Kaladi's. I find their espresso to be less sour and acidic. I like the concept of the slow bar where you can have your coffee prepared in different ways. The layout is a bit strange. To the left of the register is a space of cramped booths and chairs where most of the outlets are. On the other side, where the slow bar is, seating is much more spacious with plenty of windows for natural lighting. I wish it was more balanced, but that's a minor complaint. read more

After several recent visits the last couple of months for studying, I'm happy to say this place has improved in terms of service and quality of the coffee. This coffee shop is their flagship location in the Anchorage area on the corner of Old Seward and O'Malley in a small strip mall across from the Yogurt Lounge. Like the Jewel Lake Kaladi's from my previous review, this is also one of the few cafes that has a large, wide open seating area with glass partitions predominantly surrounding the coffee shop providing a bright atmosphere with sunshine and a great view of the mountain range to the east. There is also a glass partition at the rear of the seating area that provides a full view of their espresso lab and the large machines that roast the beans that provides the delicious aroma that permeates the entire place. SteamDot specializes in the pour-over blends with a slow bar counter where you can watch and view the process up close. I tried this on my most recent visit with the slow-bar Chemex technique and choosing the Caldera Blend, their flavor of the month which is a combination of three bold roasts from Central America, South America, and Indonesia which has a slightly nutty taste and a hint of dried fruit. This was one of the best coffee drinks I've had recently and the smooth taste was perfect to have it black without cream or sugar. The filtering process for the slow bar can take anywhere from 7-10 minutes depending on how busy they are, but the wait is well worth it for such a fine cup of coffee. They also have delicious pastries and snacks that are locally made. I ordered their Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies and a Brookie, a combination brownie and cookie with walnuts sprinkled on top. These were a great complement with the drink and the perfect afternoon snack while studying. Other notable snacks include the Harvest muffin which had a combination of apples, zucchini, carrots, and nuts as well as their Trail Mix Mini Loaf which had a mix of flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, dried bananas, cherries, almonds, and walnuts. The main star of the place of course, is the coffee. They have numerous blends from various countries and it is really cool to see the brewing process in their lab from the rear seating area. I have tried a number of their blends and a few I highly recommend are the Colombia Finca La Falda (a roast consisting of a grape, chocolate, and caramel taste), the Sumatra Mandheling (an Indonesian full-bodied roast with tones of red cherries and a sweet tobacco aroma....try this for the slow bar!), the Lux French Roast (a medium to dark roast with a rich flavor, one of their most popular blends), and the Costa Rica Santa Anita Estate (a unique roast with a sweet clarity and a kiwi flavor). The Wi-Fi here is fast, but outlets are few for such a large seating area which is why I went with four stars rather than five. That really is a small issue since the tables by the outlets are usually available when I come in. The employees in my last several visits have been very friendly and helpful, a stark contrast to the employees that provided poor service back in January. They will even provide a detailed demonstration of how their slow-bar process works if you ask them. The overall service and experience this time around was the key factor in boosting them up to four stars from two a few months back and I am happy to make this one of my main coffee destinations in South Anchorage. read more

I go here every now and then and get their pressed coffee (their equivalent to drip / brewed coffee, except it's all made in a French Press). It is always very tasty, and I appreciate a place that knows how much better pressed coffee is than brewed coffee!! My wife is a budding coffee drinker and isn't a huge fan of their Mocha's, as they use a more bitter chocolate than she's used to. The layout is kind of weird, and not your typical sit-by-the-fireplace, cozy coffee shop. I always feel like I'm gonna be really cold when I walk in, since it's tiled floors and big, wide windows. But it is really cool that they have a lot of space to work with, and they have bar seating as well, so you can watch the barista. The slow-bar is a really cool concept. I also like how they're not a flavor-crazy sort of place. Their menu is not complex. It is what a coffee shop should be. (Also, they bake some of their pastries? Yummm.) Now, I'll say that I worked in coffee for 8 years. Not that I have ever had hands-on experience roasting, but I have definitely tasted a lot of different coffees in my time. There is definitely a sort of off-putting flavor to the coffee I've had here. And unfortunately, friends who have visited Steam Dot have said the same thing. We all agree that it's great that there is competition for Kaladi (and I must say that SD's coffee is a LOT better than Kaladi), but I think there needs to be more experimentation to make a better or different roast. There is a real severe "bite" to their coffee; something powerfully acidic, sour and dry. This is based purely on black coffee, which is the only thing I've ever had there, but even my latte-drinking friends could distinguish this taste, even through all of that milk. However, I really hope they succeed, overcome Kaladi's, and get back those customers who were initially put off by them. read more

I waited 20+ minutes for my drink today, as did my friends. It was odd that there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason with the drink order. I got one of my drinks and waited at least 5 minutes for the other drink while 5 other drinks came out from the same barista, in the meantime. Will likely not go back. I don't know how I waited so long to go here, but I am so glad I finally did. I worked as a barista for some time and I learned how to make espresso from people who view coffee and espresso as an art form, not churning out paper cup after paper cup of barely tolerable swill that is masked by the overuse of cloyingly sweet syrups. SteamDot makes coffee the way it's supposed to be made - with care and artistry. Drinking coffee at SteamDot is like going to a high-end wine tasting, except for coffee. I can distinguish the different flavors on my palette. I find myself savoring every sip. The service has also been very pleasant and fast. The coffee is fantastic, but I have found the service to be hit or miss. Someone is always ready at the register to take my order, but whether or not they will look bored and annoyed with said order is up in the air. I slung coffee for many years back in the day and definitely understand the hipster barista mentality (I helped invent that - black tees, tattoos, attitude and all) but sometimes feel embarrassed about my order, or 'not cool enough' to be there (very similar to Kaladi Bros in the downtown Sagaya). The ceilings are high and there is little in the space to absorb noise so it can be very noisy, or very awkward when quiet. Music may or may not be playing....Again, hit or miss. The boyfriend suggested, on a whim, that we swing by this place and I'm so glad he did. I'm a big fan of coffee, but I won't drink Starbucks (coffee, their lattes are just fine) and Kaladi's has just struck me as so...elitist. So SteamDot turned out to be a wonderful find. When we pulled up we both couldn't help but think this was going to be a hipster/elitist coffee joint so we were prepared to deal with snotty baristas. Much to our surprise the gentleman that took our order was quite pleasant and helpful. He even had recommendations as to what coffee to try and some kind words about the cheese shop next store (see my other review!). I wasn't feeling adventurous so I just went with a nonfat chai. It was pretty spectacular. I will have to ask them next time whether they use a mix or if they blend their own. The boyfriend tried the pour over Guatemalan blend and it was basically to die for. Not too much acidity, very well rounded, a little sweet. I'm a blasphemous milk & sugar kind of coffee drinker (i know, i know) but even I felt that this coffee needed nothing to enhance the flavors. We liked the place so much that we swung by the next day too. Prices are *quite* reasonable for what you get. The siphon pot coffee seems very expensive, but you really do get what you pay for. It looks like the siphon method also gets you more than one cup of coffee (I could be wrong though). We'll definitely be frequent visitors. read more

I've been to both locations on three separate trips to Anchorage and I have felt their coffee is the best around here. They have different brew methods which does make the end product taste different from your average cup. Their consistency has been there for me, they aren't fast or slow, good coffee is an art that takes some time to brew properly. They aren't cheap, but neither is Starbucks. Being a huge fan of coffee and hearing about another in-town roaster made my brain twitch. I just HAD to try a new roaster! I am glad I did. Kaladi Brothers, being my former-favorite for local roasters can NOT compare in the coffee category...Period. These guys have pour-overs and siphon filters, which surprised me, since I have not seen either outside of my own apartment. I had no idea anyone else even knew what they were, let alone used them. The Baristas have always been friendly and professional every time I order and the Single-Origin espresso is OUTSTANDING! I REALLY like the fact you can choose between two different types of espresso, according to your taste that day. That alone makes my year. They also have a floor-to-ceiling window that looks back into the warehouse from the cafe itself. I have taken friends and family with me, just so they can see what a modern roaster looks like. (And I get my daily caffeine fix.) The entire cafe from floor to ceiling is extremely clean and very open. The huge windows are great to let in what little sunlight we have had here this summer, but when the sun is shining, it looks great in that cafe. There isn't much artwork on the wall, but they are still fairly new, so we shall see if the walls get filled up sometime. In a nutshell, the best coffee in Anchorage, possibly the state, you get to see what a clean warehouse looks like as well as a roaster in action. My opinion and personal experience is why I give SteamDot Cafe the score I do. I would have rated Kaladi Brothers Coffee, but I cannot, since I used to work for them.
