I wish I would have taken better pictures for this review, but I still think five stars is warranted. There are two different courses at Admiral Baker (North & South) and both make for a fun round of golf. The north course has more elevated tees and challenging holes, but not so difficult that the average golfer won't have a good time. The south course is a lot flatter and very forgiving which makes it fun for the advanced and the beginner. From what I was told that used to be a private course for the military, but opened up to the public and I'm glad they did. For the price point, it's a great 18 holes of golf with plenty of long par five opportunities and fun par threes. It's always best to call in advance for a teatime but I have been able to walk on a different times. They also offer a driving range and areas to putt and chip. Typically, I avoid any golf course in San Diego on the weekends due to the number of people which makes the rounds slower, so I recommend a weekday golf adventure. Some of the tea boxes are not in great shape, but that does not prevent me from playing what I think are two fun courses at a good price. At the moment, I am an average golfer at best, lol, but my friend, who plays with me is definitely a good golfer, and he enjoys the course as well. read more

This course probably has the worst staff and customer service I've encountered at a golf course. The gentleman at the pro shop was rude and looked like he couldn't care less about why you're there. Our cart's battery charge dropped at around the 9th hole and we tried calling every number you can call but nobody ever answered. Called for over 30 minutes until our cart eventually died at the 12th hole. Upon returning with our one operational cart and informing the staff, instead of getting an apology or anything all we got was a "there's only three of us, so where's the cart" and then they left without even addressing any issues we had. Country club feel, layout and facilities in a public course! I played the north course and it was pretty well-maintained. Challenging distance and long par threes when playing the blue tees. Saw some wildlife on the back nine: deer and the coyote. Carts have GPS. Good value and will be back! read more

Recently had a golf lesson from Keith Marland, one of the pro's at ADMIRAL Baker golf course, and it has changed my game. Keith suggested pre-game exercises, changes in my posture, swing and visual approach to attacking the ball. Since practicing and applying Keith's lesson points, my game has improved by an average of seven strokes and getting better every time out on the course. Keith's lesson isn't going to advance me to PGA ranks but now I'm actually winning money off some golf buddies. read more

Been sometime since I've played here.. Man the course was in horrible condition, not to mention the greens. I gotta tell you the guy working in the Pro shop has zero Couth, that alone almost had me leave. I've been golfing in San Diego for 30 years and have never dealt with such a I dont give AF attitude, not to mention our Foursome we were all charged different amounts for no apparent reason. Can only book in the app and pay $7.50 booking fee per person. What a slap in the face.?!? The old system was bad enough when you couldn't book as a single Now you can't call and book. I've played here dozens of times since my last review, but on my most recent visit I witnessed something in really bad taste, which I'd never seen before at any other course in my life! At the Pro Shop, I paid $14 for a bucket of large range balls. Upon arriving at the range (it's not adjacent to the course or Pro Shop, so most people end up driving there), there were tons of balls already leftover from other golfers. I set my bucket down, hit some balls that were already in a tray, then headed back toward the #1 hole. As I was departing the range, I saw and heard two employees walking down the line of mats and collecting all of the leftover range balls, including my untouched $14 bucket. This was so other golfers couldn't hit the defacto free balls and would have to pay for their own! So cheap and disrespectful! Really poor taste, Admiral Baker management! read more

We had a great round, but I was very dissatisfied with our treatment when returning our carts. We left a couple of empty beer cans and the attendant said it wasn't his job to remove the items, it was ours. I completely disagree with this. It is their job to remove trash. We pay to play to play and purchase drinks and food during the round. As patrons, it is absolutely not our responsibility to remove trash from the carts at the end of the round. It's theirs and what they get paid to do when cleaning carts and recharging for the next group of players. This is completely unacceptable. read more

I've been coming to Admiral Baker since 2007. I've had so many command functions here for the military and have played golf here so many times. The parking area is huge and the course is pretty easy to find with a GPS. Once you arrive the club house is behind the main area where the bar and party areas are. The clubhouse has everything from clubs, apparel, rentals, and many other golf accessories. There are two courses, The North Course (which is a little more difficult) and the South Course (which has a shorter play). Both courses are fun and have their own challenges. They have military and veteran discounts and the driving range is located back towards the exit area past the parking lot. So if you and your friends are in the mood for a great maintained course than this is a great course to go to! read more

My son used the "youth on course" and the person at check IN - did not get his name- tall, bald guy- was not very nice at all. He tried right away to discourage us to wait saying there are "8 ppl ahead and it will take a very LONG time to wait". We were not in a hurry and decided to go to the driving range to wait our turn. Guess what - within 15-20 mins, they are already calling us to play. Totally NOT long to wait. This person (at the check in counter) should be ashamed of how he treats these young men who just wanted to play golf on the weekend. They were made to feel like they do not belong. I was here for lunch and drinks, unfortunately I don't play golf. I highly recommend this golf course for lunch/dinner, brunch, golf or for hosting an elegant catered event. Plenty of parking. The restaurant food was delicious. The drinks were strong and very very reasonable in price. Nice, approachable, outgoing staff. (The review is for the North Course only. I only played the South once, a very long time ago, and remember thinking that I didn't need to ever play it again.) I was fortunate enough to play Admiral Baker just after it reopened a few weeks ago a long closure due to Covid-19, so it was in absolutely pristine condition. It was difficult to find a divot, much less any other flaws, aside from the slow and EXTREMELY soft greens, which made chipping like throwing darts. I'm not sure if/how this will change in the future after the course gets some play, but it certainly made it play easier than it otherwise could. The course itself is a really solid mid-century parkland style layout, with mostly wide fairways, some abutting the San Diego River riparian area, mature trees, some very large fairway traps, and a routing and variety of holes that will definitely hold your interest. After a pretty view off the tee box of the opening par five, the next several holes are not overly exciting, but nicely ease you into the round. By the back nine, the holes get fairly memorable, especially the dogleg 11th, which sharply wraps around an embankment, the long par four 13th, and the attractive par five 15th. The course has an older mid-century vibe, but in a worn well sort of way. While it's not going to make anyone's "best of" list, the North Course is definitely an enjoyable, under-the-radar course that is worth checking out more than once. read more

Beautiful golf course . It's a shame there are lazy employees (carts) who lack customer service and don't care about their jobs. These employees need some basic education on service and customer cares. If I ask you for a ride in the cart to meet up with my party, you should give me a ride instead of refusing to do so and then standing around and chatting with your coworkers. read more

The "manager" here was completely rude to us because we came back 15 minutes after sunset. I apologized upon pulling up bc we lost our way and took the long way back around. Yet, he laid it on us in a very rude manor saying that "its a privilege" to play there. That is not the way to talk to paying customers. A simple "hey guys I would appreciate it if you came right at sunset next time" would've done. The multiple, ongoing rude comments scorning us for 5 minutes was extremely inappropriate and unnecessary. I was very taken back by his behavior. Someone needs to teach the manager some people skills and customer service. Will not be back. read more

Just moved down to san diego and found Admital Bkaer golf course, which is is amazing itself. The staff on the other hand was very dissatisfying. Throughout the 5-6 times I have gone to admiral baker, the staff in the pro shop was disrepspectul and condescending every time I came to use admiral baker. I am not sure of the name, but there has been the same two attendees every time, and the short white guy has been disrespectful and has made us not want to give admiral baker our business. I am sure there has been other complaints, as there has not been one instance where this guy showed any respect, and was not rude to either me or my partners. read more

Played the North Course yesterday at 3:24pm. It was hot (92+), but I thought there would be some basic services on the course. Wrong! Couldn't find a working water fountain, no water jugs - nothing. No cart service and snack closed. We finally quit after 12 holes after we ran out of water we brought. Huge waste of money and very disappointing. Suggest they post course conditions when hot: 1. No water or services on course 2. Personal coolers approved 3. Take a bottle of complementary water read more

Well here goes another review of how bad these clowns that works here are. Checked in and paid for tee time and $20 cart fee. So got to first tee the starter wanted me to ride with a stranger they paired us up with. I told him i smoke and did not know the man I was paired up with. So I am willing to pay for my own cart. He said no you have to pair up or pay an additional $20 for riding alone. I went back to pro shop and ask why did you not tell me ahead of time that I would have to pay for 2 seats if I was riding alone. These clowns said oh that's the rules here. So I went around and ask all the white folks who were riding alone did they have to pay double for cart fee they said no never heard of such a thing. Hmmm this is 2023 and I did not think racism still exist here in California. read more

Nice little municipal golf course. Greens were in nice shape and there was actually no waiting the entire day. We played in a group of five and still finished in under 4 hours. The blue tees offer a good distance with a couple of par threes exceeding 220 yards, and plenty of long par fours. Decent for any golfer as the fairways are wide enough to let you spray the ball a bit and not get into too much trouble. Fairway grass is a little brown but that is just the season. It really was a fun round with a group of great guys. Fortunate to have a sunny and nice day on January 3. Post round bar had some great wings and you have to try the nachos with some chicken on them, they didn't look like anything special but taste was great, could have gone for a second round. read more

Their south course is pretty below par but at least the north is ok. BUT there is a guy that works in the golf shop that is extremely rude. He is a overweight white guy with glasses and will make any comment about you he can get away with. If still have 10 minutes left with the carts he will come find you and tell you he will call the navy police on you if you don't drop everything to leave right that second, even though there is still time left. He says whatever he wants then threatens to get you kicked out and have the military police come after you if you try to defend yourself. So be warned if you go here, he will try to get you for anything. read more

Golf though is great. north is better, but south is a bit cheaper, and still a fun track. generally it's in good shape, and they redid the bunkers on north not too long ago. often can sneak into a 5 hour round, but worth it in my opinion. read more

I play here often and really enjoy both courses. They are quite different and both have their fun quirks. Unfortunately, the staff in the pro shop has the worst customer service I've experienced anywhere, and it's been this way for years. It's almost quite humorous at this point, their misery is so predictable. They do not greet you, they do not smile, and they do not care about your experience at the course. There are several reviews I've read about this same issue, and it shocks me they do not address this and try to improve their customer service. I get it, it's a monotonous and probably pretty boring job to work a front desk, but customer service is extremely important in this industry and first impressions can really set the mood and experience for certain people coming to play at your course. read more

Sad that such a nice golf course has to get such a bad review because of their staff. You need to go to the golf store to pay for your tee time and get your receipt. The staff there was rude, pushy, and had attitude for no reason. I thought maybe it was something we did (although we did nothing), but there were a couple of children in the shop and he yelled at them to get out or buy something. I don't think I've ever seen a grown adult yell at 2 or 3 children. Thinking maybe he was having a bad day, we made our way down to check-in and get our cart. The staff there was equally as rude. Didn't say a word, made us fill out a form and pointed to our cart to go. Are these guys not getting paid and are forced to work against their will? Finally when we finally finished playing we returned our cart. Before we could even park the golf cart and partly moving, the same staff member had his hands in our cart throwing away our bottles and even golf balls that we wanted to keep. What is this? We're trying to clean up our mess, collect our belongings, but this guy is halfway into our cart touching our stuff. When we were trying to take off our clubs he starts moving the cart to go and clean. This is absolutely unacceptable. I won't be back to this place after reading other reviews. We all experience the same treatment and this is something that should be addressed. People pay good money to come and golf here and should be treated with respect. read more

Once a year, my family organizes a golf tournament in honor of our loved ones who enjoyed the game. Family and friends gather together from the Pacific NW and the East Coast. We had a huge group and we chose this golf course for the first time. We made reservations far in advance. When we arrived, there was morning fog hanging in the air and it was breathtaking. There was a lot of water in the San Diego River after all the rains and the golf course was muddy which was to be expected. Otherwise it was totally beautiful and a perfect day for golf. There were many spots to get drinks (the consensus on the Bloody Marys were that they were strong, spicy and delicious) and they offer a variety of good beer as well. I highly recommend this golf course! read more

After being closed for about a year, I really expected more. Greens have been enlarged significantly and now have all-new bent grass. The green side conditions are a mystery on some holes as there are bare spots and areas that should be ground under repair...you would think this would not be the case after a year of rehab. Greens have more contour than before but have been quite slow save for the last time I played (mid-May2012), hopefully they will keep the speed up. Good luck holding your approach on the green, they play like concrete with a layer of hard sod over top. Fairways are are in pretty good shape save an occasional bare area or muddy spot but are basically the same as before. Topography of the course has always been a stronger suit and still is for a military track. Lakes/ponds have water in them now. Yea! Pace of play is consistently slow, with loads of young swabbies off the ship running the zig-zag and retirees lining up $100k puts making up the majority of the patrons. Slow play is one of recreational Golf's biggest challenges and can be mitigated by education (Hello, Starter and Staff et. al). The range facility is mats (booo!) and a pain in the butt ball machine that is not only expensive but does not take dollar bills...codes/keys only. Chipping areas are good. Putting greens are nice and bear no resemblance to the greens on the North Course. The clubhouse is nice. The food isn't too shabby but don't order the machaca for breakfast, you'll be in for a rude surprise. The restaurant staff can be hit or miss and they seem to have a penchant for keeping the tv's tuned to talk shows or the Fox weather-girl instead of Golf Channel or ESPN. Go figure. Pro shop staff are generally good with the occasional doofus just to keep it real. Keep in mind this is not the PX and prices here are standard for any regular course's pro shop and certainly not a good deal. Greens fees however, are fair for what you get. The biggest issue with this course (and Baker South for that matter) historically and currently is condition. A significant aspect of this is how golfers who make up the normal clientele treat the course while playing. Filling divots in the fairway and fixing ball marks on the green may seem obvious to many of us but seems to escape the large percentage of these players. Hit the course in the afternoon and look out for ankle breaker/ball swallowing fairway hazards and bombing range green conditions. Admiral Baker staff...listen up. Educate your mainstream golfers or you will have the same shabby conditions again that have plagued your courses for years. This will be a crying shame after spending so much time and money on the refresh of Baker North. read more

Eight of us women teed off on the North Course about 10 AM Monday. I was heartened to see a sizable Audubon refuge on the course which was in good condition and very playable. The driving range was closed for maintenance for couple hours before we teed off and the putting green was busy. Fee with cart was $60. I can understand the complaints about staff behavior, not up to par perhaps with most non-military courses. However, Jaime saved the day on the course with his water service and his cheerfulness and his fixing my sluggish cart with his eight pumps of the accelerator. Still had difficulty getting the brake to hold, but Jaime had no problem with the stubborn brake so must have been my inferior technique. Our industrious and personable waitress Carmen did a great job with our six orders on the veranda of the dining room, with its sweeping view. However, she was working solo at 3 PM with a large party inside and we finally bussed our own table and went inside to pay our bills. I do think overall from our experience and what I have read here that the Navy could upgrade its training and staffing, but I'll be back to play here again soon. We enjoyed our golfing day at Admiral Baker! read more
