I've been coming to the Stein for about a year now! Always a great time to hang with friends or for a quick drink. Owner takes great care of the bar and all of her customers. Several favorites on tap and some seltzer/bottle options available too. There are always themed events going on and my partner and I have the best time here! Where to start 1st place was not clean I get it it's a dive bar but plz have some standards. Homeless outside definitely didn't make the place feel safe. The service wasn't much either no liquor come on plz get some spirits In The joint I'm not trying to load up on just beer. On top of that, Homeless people hangout outside with no security, and the service is soooo bad. When I came In it took 20 min for them to even ask what I wanted. I left and will never go back. Service was horrible. I usually come in with my friends, we buy each other drinks. It was my turn to buy the group drinks and when I handed my friend my $100 dollar bill to pay for said drinks, the owner, Kayla, and the bartender explain to me the $100 I handed her was fake because it did not have a UV strip that lights up when a UV flashlight hits it. Mind you I use Navy Federal, lol, and this bill was a 2006 version still in use, I know I checked because I thought maybe she was right. So I asked if they had the marker that checks if it's counterfeit, they of course said no. Ok, all good I just paid the homie instead. I come back May 3rd, 2023, try and buy some drinks hand a $50 and they do not have change for a $50. Lol like girl just tell me, "you're no longer welcome here," instead of your sly crap, I was in the Army, I'm pretty sure I can take it. I moved to Whittier about a year ago and I have yet to find a good dive bar with good beer and good music, that was until I came across this gem. It was a Saturday night when my friends and I decided to check this place out. As soon as we walked in, we heard some really good alternative music playing, turns out we showed up on emo night. We had an absolute blast there. They have a theme for everyday of the week. There isn't any bars that have themes around the area so I love this! Local and-small hole in the wall bar that is next to a liquor store and a Jack in the Box. Canned beers are $6 and draft is $7. They do have a single pool table and a food vendor in the back parking lot who makes tacos. They also have a 2x4 Jenga tower to play as well. Restrooms were dirty and leaking water onto the floor. Some nights they have a DJ who plays hit songs. Crowd appears to be 40+ and local. The blonde bartender provided good and fast service. On a Sunday late afternoon of bar hopping because we were bored, & wanted to explore what our city had to offer, I finally made it inside. Sundays are definitely not a day to go in expecting a lot. It was so dead, there was just the bartender, maybe another worker, I couldn't tell & maybe one or two customers and then us. Surprised they had Blue Moon. No draft, just bottled beer and hard liquor (I don't think they have wine either, again couldn't tell). They offered peanuts & saw a couple of tv's. Bathrooms were clean (surprise, surprise my family & I have history there, one my father was a longtime patron from mid 70's to mid 80's till he stopped drinking. Two, my brother knew the owner(s) pretty well during that time and three, we all helped out my brother & mother cleaning it and yeah those bathrooms were nastier in those days) The experience in the bar (yea I was a kid going in w/her dad while he drank a beer on an errand for my mom....interesting back then kids were allowed in some bars as long as they were w/their parents) Anyhow remember it was a little more filled in w/old timers, mixed races and bartenders were friendly and inviting. Old school people usually are more receptive. They even had picked eggs, pickled pigs feet, polish dogs, old popcorn maker, etc. Man times have a changed since..... It wasn't too bad, but my honest feeling was the atmosphere was "dry". Didn't exactly feel welcomed (wasn't expecting a welcome crew either) but it felt "bleh" being there. So if you just want a quick pit stop to grab a beer and run, this would be it. Again my review was based on a lazy late Sunday afternoon. Well it does state Fri/Sat nights are better - although judging by the female bartender's mannerism & dress gave off the vibe that they probably have "Fichera's" on their best nites of business, well I'm sure some of you fellas/hombres have already experience that at the cantina's in Baja & plenty of little dives out here as well. Also, on front of their building, behind the sign has graffiti & has been tagged for almost a year now, It's says something about the end of earth or something..... Finally, I take back from my previous review what I said about Embers Lounge & Poor Denny's. They were actually a better experience (for Sunday). read more
