Visited on a busy Monday evening.. ordered food and beer on tap.. they have outdoor seating (plenty). The food is mediocre nothing amazing - fish and chips were okay, chicken tenders were okay they forgot to give the buffalo sauce, the yam tacos were okay and the french fries lacked seasoning big time! The beer (heferweissen, black berry 6 point) however was nice but i would expect that of a restaurant in our fav german town. There was no wait time in contrast to some other restaurants so it was good to find a table outdoor and be seated immediately. There is no fire pit or heaters for outdoor seating so be seated with your jackets on. I was not impressed with the food here at all but had a good time and enjoyed their beer. read more

I'm not a fan of bar food, so my opinion is biased... but this sandwich was bet mediocre for my taste. Not much flavor at all. Felt like there was more mayonnaise than anything else. The portion size is huge though, so it's enough for 2 meals. They were very good about accommodating for covud, making sure each table was the adequate distance apart, and the path was 1 way. This is quite a spacious bar and is really easy to find as it is in the middle of front st. The interior is dark and fairly average. Nothing screams Bavarian, but it was clean and had the dark wooden tables expected of a pub. There was no seating or servers. You pretty much walk in and seat yourself. Go up to the bar and order food. They give you a buzzer and you pick up your food when it is ready in a platter. Felt very food court like. The food itself was plated pretty average. The portions were large though, so you got plenty for the price. The menu was weird though. It didn't feel Bavarian or American or asian. But it had aspects of all three. Very disappointing experience. Food is way overpriced, and keep in mind this is food that sits in a deli warmer similar to what you would find at a Safeway deli. If you want good warm deli food, go to Safeway, much better food and better prices . Our meal was cold and far from fresh (probably from sitting in the warmer for who knows how long). When I returned the dish and advised the staff it was cold, the staff person rolled his eyes as he took the plate without saying a word...no apology. .. he was obviously annoyed that I preferred at least warm food. Omg we could have stayed here all day! We stumbled in mid-afternoon for a snack on a VERY cold and snowy day. The place was crowded and there was a line--a LONG line-at the bar--obviously this was a popular place and everyone seemed to be having a great time. There were couples and old folks and families, all enjoying the same space with no issues. Husband had a Scottish dark Stout (#20 at the time on the menu) IMPERIAL REUBEN CLAUS- and I got the crafted root beer --DIAMOND KNOT ROOT BEER. BEST ROOT BEER EVER-!!! For snacks we ordered the obligatory pretzel with cheese sauce-I mean, you're in Leavenworth, you must have pretzels and beer, right? This cheese sauce was DIVINE. This is not a place where 20 somethings gather to discuss political zeitgeist. The average clientele is 30-50 years old and are tourists. The music should either be German-inspired folk music (for the Bavarian theme) or run the gamut of classic rock to 90's grunge or the pop music of 1970s-2000 et cetera. Instead, it was grating stuff from a Pandora playlist made by a Seattle college freshman. Still, 10/10 would come again. Loved this place! The staff was very friendly and helpful, the ambience laid back, the food good, and the beer menu was WOW! My husband ordered the IPA flight of 6 beers which he really enjoyed. I ordered a flight of 6 incredible ciders, which included peach, apricot, lavender, Bartlett pear, blackberry, and lemon basil. All were very good, not too overly sweet. The food came out SUPER fast, & it was so tasty, but this is a 3-star review because both dishes were SUPER cold. And I'm not talking fries are medium but the gravy warms it up. Literally nothing on either plate had any heat to it. Which is so hard to figure out, since the service was impressively fast. I ate the poutine & zero of the poppers & the poutine was delicious - so flavorful, very layered, very generous with all the toppings & seasoning on the fries. Yes you need to seat yourself, order yourself, get your own water, and bus your own table. Why then are you asking your customers for a tip after they order the food from the counter? The tipping point for me was when I asked for a side of ranch and was told that I have to pay for that. In all my years of dining out never have I ever been asked to pay for ranch! Never once did anyone check on us. What then is the tip for? I should have known not to tip the moment I had to order my food rather than a waitress coming to our table. Music was too loud as well. Recommended to me by a coworker so I had to come check it out. We really wanted a place with beer and a big open outdoor space since we had our doggo with us and Stein fit the bill. Not sure if this is new due to Covid times but the ordering process sucks as some have mentioned. Dogs aren't allowed inside and there is no waiter/waitress service outside. You have to go in, stand in line (which can be very long during busy times) to order, go back and wait outside at your table, and then pick your own food up when it's ready. If you want another beer after you've finished your first, back in to line you must go. This sucked because it split our party of two up since we had our dog with us, and I spent awhile in line by myself ordering for us. The food was very meh. Fiancé got the Stein platter with the brat and pulled pork and I got the summer salad. Like sometime mentioned in an earlier review, the food kind of tasted like grocery store bought items, but just reheated up. Goodness, I don't know what it is about the "Stein" places. Maybe just a coincidence, but went to a, "Beer Stein," in Eugene, OR a couple weeks prior and it was the same type of stuff. When you arrive, someone will eventually meet you near the bar and ask if you want to be in or outside. Make your choice, we chose inside, and they tell you where to sit, but to order at the bar. The food selection is about the right blend of not being too much but also not being too little. Everything sounds good. It should be noted, this is more of a deli-style type joint, if you will. What I mean is, next to the bar where you order is the kitchen. Up front, you have all their meats, baking under hot lamps in a display case. The cooks put together your food real quick (because it's basically already made), so by time you've sat down, the pager they give you is going off. The tables are mostly picnic style, and there food and crumbs gathering on the floor like peanuts at a Roadhouse Grill (exaggeration). Yeah, no server is coming, so when the pager goes off, you're getting up and walking to the "deli" area, where a chef has set your food on top of the display as other patrons stand by it. As you gather your food, the cook directs your attention to the silverware, which are baskets of forks, spoons and knives, which you dive your hands into, grab one of each then move along. I didn't want to take a picture of it and seem weird, but there were large food particles in each of the baskets and a lot of the silverware was dirty. Not all of them, but I did snap a photo of my knife (see attached), which obviously hadn't been scrubbed at all. I did have to pick through the silverware to get enough clean utensils for a party of four. Just to reiterate again, you're grabbing your own silverware from a pile of silverware in a small tray, putting your hands all over them. This has got to be a health code violation. We chose the Arugula Salad, Beer Cheese Burger and a pretzel. Add sweet potatoes for $4 to the salad! Wow. The other couple in our party added a bun to their bratwurst and they found out it's a dollar extra to do so. Lol. Seeing a bun on bratwurst's ended up being our inside joke the entire trip after this. "That'll be one dollar." The salad was very good. Kudos to them for this. The burger was actually sort of gross to be honest. A different kind of oily and the added arugula wasn't the touch it needed. The bacon was from the "deli" display case, so was over cooked and hard. The burger was a thin patty and breaded, think chicken fried steak. The pretzel was great. Very fluffy, good taste and the right amount of salt. Beer cheese was good but a little runny. I actually used some of this cheese on my burger because they didn't put enough (in my opinion). He's my main gripe. When you're sitting and eating (we were there for an hour), no one, NO ONE, comes up and asks how everything is, or if you need refills or anything. This is irritating because they ask for a tip right from the start because you pay first. So when you put the customary 18%, you're expecting a level of service. This place just isn't giving it. Like at all. Like when you're done, you're encouraged to buss your own table. Imagine eating at a Subway, but add in a really good and vast beer selection. I checked and saw Stein means, "Stone," in German, it does not mean, "Deli," or, "cattle car your own way in then out." I don't know if this is going to be the new way of doing things. I hope not though. What I do know, covid is changing stuff, I get it, but we don't have to be made to feel like lepers. Because that's what's happening here. If it's the new way, they should at least set the preset tips to 5%-10%, or just take them away all together. They're not being earned in the front of house, period. Walked away pretty disappointed overall. Two stars because the Appetizers were real good and the beer selection is huge. The pictures on here, in my opinion, make this place look better than it really is. read more

It was ok. The platter is not good. Just a bunch of cheap sides and dry corn bread, root beer ribs were out so they subbed it but the meat subbed was so dry. The wings are standard.
