We ordered the pretzels, schnitzel, Sauerbraten, and the sausage platter. All were hearty and what you'd hope for at a Bavarian-style beer hall. My cousin and I stopped by Bären Haus on a Sunday while in Leavenworth, hoping to try another German restaurant in town. We were especially excited to order the Kohl Roulade (stuffed cabbage), since we had tried it at another nearby spot earlier on our trip and absolutely loved it. When we arrived, there was about a 15-minute wait for booths and tables, but we were seated right away at the high tops. We were already starving and had plans to catch the fireworks afterward, so that worked perfectly for us. Shortly after sitting down, we were served warm bread with both regular butter and garlic butter. The garlic butter paired with the warm, soft bread was to die for, honestly one of the highlights of the meal. We placed our order for the Kohl Roulade, and it came out in about 10 minutes. As soon as it arrived, I cut into the roll, made sure to smother it in the marinara sauce, and took my first bite...then my second...and my third. Overall, it was just okay. The meat wasn't quite as flavorful as what we had experienced elsewhere, which was a bit disappointing given how high our expectations were. The plate also came with red cabbage, sauerkraut, and fried potatoes. The red cabbage and potatoes were tasty, but the sauerkraut wasn't really for me though that's more of a personal preference since I'm not a big sauerkraut fan. We really wanted to love this dish, but it just didn't quite live up to what we were hoping for. That said, you can't win them all, right? Sat at the table for over twenty minutes and never was checked on, didn't even get a chance to order a beverage before we walked out. They continued to ignore us and kept serving the table next to us more beverages and then served two large tables that came in ten minutes after us. It wasn't even busy, half the tables were empty. We came into town yesterday and this place was open until 10 pm so we gave it a go. We had a high top table at the bar with beautiful views of the mountains and sunset. We ordered their Cabernet Sauvignon and I don't know if they aerate it or what they do, but it added a light effervescent taste and I loved it! Second stop in town trying to find good German food. They advertise seasoned potatoes and fresh baked bread, so I thought we were on the right track. NOPE! Just as gross as the last place. Ordered the beef rouladen. The beef was old and dry. They covered it in a gravy that tasted old with a weird color. As far as the "seasoned" potatoes and the "fresh baked bread", both were gross. This place is pretty good. They have a wide spread of food ranging from Pizza to Steak. The service was friendly and the decor and layout was not overly crammed. The one thing i did not like is the fact that they charge for refills on all drinks (except water). Which the only reason for the 4 stars. I believe that is kinda a big deal when the prices for the rest of the menu is what is it. I am not saying they are overpriced, but simply that free refills is not completely unreasonable. I thought it started off great my group and I were helped right away, and the theme of the place was amazing! The host was wearing a dirndl costume and made it feel as if I was in Germany. Myself and a friend went to Baren Haus during peak season on December 28th. We were unsurprised at a long waitlist to get a table for two around 2pm and ended up getting sat by about 315pm. Of note, the hostess was kind, calm, and courteous and our server was fantastic. She was friendly, prompt and managed her numerous tables with seemingly ease. Unfortunately, the food was not ideal. We started by ordering the German Pretzel with cheese sauce and were disappointed to find the cheese sauce was eerily similar to Cheez Whiz and definitely low quality. For lunch, I ordered the Sauerbraten and my friend ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich. I was excited to try a new German dish and was hoping for a better experience than what I had with the pretzel, but was disappointed to find out the "sweet and tangy brown gravy" used was almost identical to a watered-down version of HP Sauce. Despite not being the most authentic or delicious meal, the portion was massive and I was unable to finish my plate. As for the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, my friend noted it was one of the best grilled chicken sandwiches she had ever had and also commented on the large portion size. Based on the food we had ordered, the best items were those that were not traditionally German, which seemed odd for a restaurant in the middle of a Bavarian village. I would likely not re-visit given the lower quality of the food. I've had better and hotter food at hospital cafeterias. It was probably pretty good when it was made... yesterday? I make dinner almost every night for my family and with busy schedules, it sometimes has to hold for hours. Mine still beats this hands down. Cutting the schnitzel was tough with the supplied steak knife. Everything was just above room temperature when served. Nowhere near the 140 deg health code minimum. You know how improperly reheated food cools down quicker than freshly cooked food? This was like that but more so. The potatos were undercooked yet cold after a few bites. The "in house bread" might be homemade, just not today, or yesterday, but perhaps a few of days ago. I had one bite. If your going to try to pass off leftovers as restaurant quality, at least re-warm that shit in a hot skillet, not 60 sec in a microwave. I wanted to like this place but I've found very few good options in such a tourist trap town. I visit this restaurant everytime I go to, or through Leavenworth. 1st of all if you've never been to Leavenworth it's a total Bavarian experience in itself! Definitely I must do. And Baron Haus is my "go to" place to get my German/Bavarian sausage & Bratwurst fix!! Lol Comfortable atmosphere, friendly service & good food! After backpacking/hiking for 3 days we met here for some celebratory food and drinks. The staff was very welcoming-- the lingering dirt in our clothes & lumps in our walks, they could tell we were ready to feast. They weren't too busy and we were able ti get a table right away. This was great to come to after some of the beauty hikes in the area, as staff was super friendly and service was really quick. My wife order grilled chicken with side salad. They need to work on TIMING they brought everything out at once, even the bread. The food looked amazing but tasted so so. My wife was a little light headed, and she wanted a snack as quickly as possible. We asked the person who brought us water if he could order pretzels right away, and even though he wasn't our server, it was out to use in moments! The pretzels were quite good. The cheese sauce, which could be hot or miss, was very good too! I had a kolsch beer, and it was good. I ordered the German Sausage Platter, which came with red cabbage, German sauerkraut, and German potatoes. The sausage was smoked and the taste was amazing. The kraut was good, but the red cabbage was the best! My wife had Sauerbratten. It came with the same sides, but the meat was tender, and the sauce was amazing.
