We were totally and pleasantly surprised. What a lovely evening we had. The place is very laid back and comfortable. The food was fabulous. I had the white fish and my husband had the veiner schnitzel with a fried egg . I have been to Germany and do not remember the food this good or healthy. I chose the special drink of the evening which was an excellent choice with my meal. I believe it had lavender in it. My white fish was flavorful and cooked perfectly with a slight crust around the edges. We were very happy but you need to come early since dinner choices and dessert ran out quickly. read more

I would die for the brunch. The Austrian Benedict is incredible. This is the only place in town I even go for brunch. The servers and bartender are also amazing, friendly and professional. Their carrot ginger juice is really nice and fresh too. I recommend adding a side of bacon to your order as well. I've never had authentic German food before, and we were a little apprehensive. But we couldn't pass up a 5 Yelp star establishment. As usual, the Yelp crowd did not let us down. If this place were in Brooklyn, it could totally hold its own against the popular brunch mainstays. Loved the wurst plate with eggs over-easy, and the schnitzel and eggs too. An absolutely fabulous dinner! We started with the kasespätzle and it was truly wonderful! The duck was also great, and my wife's salmon was some of the best we've had. Amazing meal and great atmosphere. I started with a hand crafted blueberry mule. I tried the Jager schniztle, it was recommended that I get it with a fried egg on top and now I can't imagine ordering it any other way. It pulled the whole meal together. I loved the spaetzl! Not sure if spaezl ia pasta or what, but it was great. So tastey, great texture, I could eat a whole bowl of just that. A mostly locally sourced ingredients menu deserves great care and every meal I've had here has not disappointed. The wait staff can easily recommend wine or beer to pair with your meal. We were in town visiting relatives and stopped in for brunch on Saturday. Short story is - Excellent!! I had the the schnitzel special. Who knew eggs, schnitzel and gravy could be so good together. It was great. I highly recommend it. My wife had the bratwurst. Also an excellent choice. The best turned out to be the strawberry and chocolate donuts. I would go just for those next time. We found this place by accident by reading reviews online, and we are glad we did. It was one of the best meals I have had in many years. For some reason *good* German food is hard tome come by in the US, but this place nails it. Food: I had the Jagerschnitzel and my wife had the Wurst Plate. Both were awesome. Best spaetzle I've had outside Germany, also. The tastes are subtle yet good without being overbearing. Service: Our server was fantastic and helpful and friendly. Reservations are recommended, but not required. We went for lunch (on a Saturday) and they were serving only breakfast at 1pm, which seemed odd. I was a little put off by that but the server then suggested we make a dinner reservation and come back later, and I'm glad we did. It was well worth it. The breakfasts looked good, but we wanted lunch, not breakfast, so we ate lunch elsewhere. Atmosphere: It's small, but not overly loud. Several parties walked in and chose not to wait, so again I highly recommend reservations. Prices: I thought the portions were fine. A tad pricey, but not outrageous... especially considering the quality. Dinners run in the $20 to $25 range. Conclusion: I don't get to Marquette often, but if I come back to town I will come back to Steinhaus. read more

I was visiting Marquette for work and had a craving for some German food. I figured I'm close to Wisconsin so there's a good chance I can find some. Being 50% German, I can say this is some good stuff ! First off, great beer selection. I mentioned I'm German right? I ordered the pretzel and mustards. The server mentioned the mustards were house made and one would "sneak up on me" but I figured that was the standard restaurant warning for people who don't like spice in their food. Well... the one has a nice horseradish flavor and it does sneak up on ya. I ordered the short rib sauerbraten with spatzle and bacon and cabbage. WOW!!! So good!!! It was super tender and all three parts had amazing flavors. I may drive another 7 hours for that entree again someday. Great service. Amazing food. A friend went with me to the Grand Opening. The restaurant was full when we arrived, so they offered us a seat at the bar and we were told it would be a 45 minute wait. It was a little bit longer than that, but it's understandable on opening night. I would guess that the average wait time will not be that long once they're open for a while. The Blackberry Mojito that my friend ordered was delicious, as was the German beer I ordered. When we were seated, we had a couple questions about what some of the items on the menu were exactly, and our waitress had to check on one thing because she didn't know, but now we all know what Spatzel is. I ordered the Jager Schnitzel which was delicious. I had never had schnitzel before and was very pleased with my first experience with it. I would have like to have ordered one of their homemade pretzels, but they didn't have them available- I assume they ran out earlier with how busy it was. The only complaint I have really isn't my complaint- my friend had ordered the cabbage that comes with every entree on the side- which to both of us who have worked in the industry means "on a separate plate"- because she HATES cabbage, but I was going to eat it. It was served on the same plate with part of her other food on top of it. I'm not as picky as she is, but she's the kind of person who doesn't like her food touching food she won't eat. The waitress did offer to take it back and have it remade, but we had already waited another 25 minutes to be served what we had ordered, so she opted not to send it back. All in all, it is definitely a nice place to have a date, go with a small group of friends (not a ton of seating so don't take a group bigger than 6) and experience something out-of-the-ordinary for Marquette. Nice menu selection and decent food, but if you are looking for authentic German food, keep looking. The Hofbrau bier was served in a coffee mug and music from the Allman Brothers played in the background. The food was good, just not the experience we expected. Although I travel all over the country trying different restaurants I rarely leave a review. This was one experience I feel I need to post about. If i could give this place a 0 I would purely because of the service. I come to Marquette quite a bit for work and enjoy trying different restaurants in the area. Unless you are a local, I say stay away from this place. I got there on a Monday night and sat at the bar. There was one other person at the bar so I sat toward the middle. A couple came in that were friends with the one person so I agreed to move down to accommodate them. I ordered a beer and the charcuterie plate. Food and beer were good. After a little bit another friend popped in and I was asked to move down to the end. There was a serving area at the end of the bar so I was pushed against that and the girl joining the group. The girl stood with her friends leaving the chair empty. It was tolerable because I still had some room for the dinner I was going to order. I ordered the bratwurst then went to the bathroom. When I got back, there was some guy, who was obviously a friend of the bartender, sitting in the girls chair. They had pushed my chair all the way at the end of the bar to the point where the bartender had to take away the serving mat for drinks to accommodate my dinner coming up. The waitress piled empty glasses right in front of me. I cancelled my food order and will find someplace else to eat. If you are a local, by all means go to this place, seems like you will be served well. From being at the restaurant I get the sense that the positive reviews are from people that live around the block. If you are from out of town, there are a number of better places in Marquette that will welcome you. read more

This place has recently added Sunday dinner, when they experiment with other cuisines. I haven't tried the regular menu, but on the basis of the Mexican night in late June I'm ready to trust them with whatever they do. I've eaten pozole in major Mexican cities but have rarely had it as good as the one here; also had a fine house salad with local greens and spatzen that were as good as I've had anywhere.
