I was looking for a nice, yet casual, place for a girls night out. Of course I jumped on the Yelps to figure that out with the help of the interwebs where to eat. I read a few reviews of local joints, then I stumbled across the reviews for Stella. Since I trust all things that Jeffery S says about ... well everything, I read his glowing remarks about Stella and said to myself, "Self, you gotta try this place!" I had the Open Face Hanger Steak sandwich with the French Onion Soup. My girlfriend had the Bacon Swiss Burger with a salad. I won the dinner round that day! The hanger steak is off the charts delish! I admit I have had better French onion soup, but it was still really good. Her burger was good as well, but her one complaint was that the salad seemed a little unwashed. I found it rather interesting that they DO NOT have a ranch salad dressing. The chips that came with the meal were pretty tasty!! Our cups were kept full of our choice of beverage. The waitstaff was attentive and once we said we were not in a hurry, neither were they; which was fine by us! More detail on the hanger steak? Sure. The steak was cooked just the way I like it: medium. It is open face so knife and fork were in order for me ... those more adventurous might just pick it up with their hands and chow down. Not this girl! The mushrooms added a great flavor but I was pretty much in love with the basil mayo and blue cheese crumbles. Child please!! I am not sure when I go back I will order something else because this was just too tasty to not try again! I tend to judge places I eat by the cleanliness of their bathrooms, and Stella did not disappoint. Their ladies room was clean and cute. One odd thing, though, was that they had a candle plugged in next to the sink with the chord dangling right by the water ... I was not sure on the safety of that move, but then I am not a health inspector. The decor is charming in the dinning rooms, and there is a patio I long to visit, but it was still too cold to venture out there on this trip. All in all I would visit this eatery again, and what is more I would recommend it to my friends and random interwebs too. Give Stella a try! read more

We came here for lunch and they weren't too busy. I got the Italian dip with the garden salad. The sandwich was perfectly toasted and I savored every bite. Wish I would have gone with the pasta salad instead of the garden salad which was quite boring. Our lunch party enjoyed our meal and we were out in a reasonable amount of time. If you like Desert Edge Pub or Red Butte, you will love Stella as they are owned by the same people, Martine too. The menu is the same as the pub. The turkey tortellini salad is amazing but thats it. Daily pastas are good and they are known for there french onion soup. Straight forward food but nothing thats going to blow your socks off. Full bar and great local beer on tap. Looking for a restaurant that features fresh and mind blowing food? Stop at Stella's! We started with the goat cheese platter. The infused cheese was a light appetizer that's filled with spiced flavor along with honey. The accompanying toastinis were a good choice as it added depth and crunch. Decided to get the 2 tacos and when they arrived I was amazed that the portion filled the already large plate. The tacos were topped with large dollops of Guac and fresh vegetables. The accompanying homemade chips were crispy and thick! The smoky and bright corn succotash was the perfect topping for my tacos. Sorry I always end up saying the name like Elaine from Seinfeld. I'm writing this review after given this place yet another chance. I can't count how many times I have been here over the years and I'm not sure why. I'm not sure if it's the mediocre food or service that I dislike the most. In the past I have gone and not even been greeted before I got frustrated and left. Much like before this time I wasn't greeted until the host/server rang in leaving customer's checks. It was lunch and from my experience they don't have a host to welcome you but rely on servers and bartenders to do the job. This is frustrating when being seated or trying to pay and leave. A simple greeting would go a long way but not as important as the time wasted seating and cashing out. The daily pasta salad is always so so and nothing special. I'm not sure why so many people love it? The prime rib sandwich special I had looked amazing however it tasted like left over frozen deli meat. The sandwich was so bland that I had to ask for a side of Au jus just to choke it down. My wife's food looked awesome as well but to our disappointment was bland and tasteless. I was also blown away when I asked the server about a draft seasonal beer and he had no idea how to describe it. He didn't even try? Not a big deal if they weren't associated with a local Brewery. Pretty disappointing. We came with our two kids, 4 and 19 months, and ordered an appetizer, two kids' meals, and two entrees. We also ordered a club soda and two juices for the kids and asked them to water them down by at least half. The salmon was pretty good, but you could tell it wasn't high-quality fish. The enchiladas were okay. The sauce wasn't good and the whole dish could have been served hotter. The kids' meals were also pretty cold; the cheese in the quesadillas wasn't melted but was already solid. The service was friendly, which is the reason for 2 stars. Overall, the food just wasn't that good. The most disappointing part was our bill. They charged us $2.99 each for the club soda and two watered-down juices, even though we ordered two kids' meals. I came here for a business lunch and truly enjoyed my experience. The food was decently priced and it was fresh and tasty. I ordered the Cuban sandwich and their French onion soup. The two had plenty of flavor (they were soooo good!) and the portions were generous. It was clean and the service was friendly. I originally thought that it'd be a hit or miss because the demographic in Millcreek tends to be older folks but I consider this a place that I would definitely come back to. Love Stella's! I always end up getting their Santa Fe chicken sandwich. Other options always sounds good, but I just am a fan! I love getting the side salad with their creamy basil dressing - oh I could swim in that dressing. I always ask for extra to dip the potato chips they give you in it. I've eaten here many times and the reason for the 3 stars is that it is A-OK as Yelp says. It isn't fabulous and it isn't terrible. I've had some great meals there and some very so-so meals. Seems like other reviewers have the same experience. The hangar steak is good. The tacos are usually consistent and the pasta of the day always something good to try. I love the garage doors and the patio in the summer is a wonderful place to sit, enjoy a glass of wine and have some appetizers. The service has always been above average here. Good food, not good service. At least this was the case the night we were there. We walked in at 8:30pm on a Saturday everything went fine until we were finished with our meal. Our waiter proceeded to stand by the table and wait for us to sign the bill like he had somewhere to be (awkward) and then some lady came over asking if she could clean our table so "the dishwashers could get going"... the time was 9:30pm and the lady told us they were closed. There were at least 3 other tables inside the restaurant and when I googled the hours it said they were open until 10 on Saturdays so...??? We felt rushed and unwelcome. First off, this restaurant seriously needs a web site, already. You kidding me? My mom has a web site. The same restaurant group that owns Martine in downtown restaurant (my favorite restaurant in SLC) own Stella. The building is beautiful. The inside is nice and modern but too barren. Service was very friendly and quick on a Saturday night (on the other hand, it was not too busy). We had the crab and corn cakes for a starter - well made, fresh and delicious. I tired the open face flank steak sandwich which was tasty. The lady had the turkey sandwich with a cranberry/celery sauce which was very flavorful and made the sandwich. She got for only $1.50 more a whole bowl of amazing seafood chowder. Their prices are reasonable. Did not try their entrees but they look good and nothing was over $17. Get a web site. read more

This is a place I have been to often. It is owned by the same folks whom run the Desert Edge Pub in Trolley and Red Butte Garden in Foothill Village. The food is pretty consistent from one to the other. I, personally, think it is very good. Their salads are excellent. I highly recommend the Hanger Steak Salad. They have great sandwiches and soups and their tacos and enchiladas, while not exactly traditional Mexican tasting, are honestly delicious! The food usually comes quickly and is fresh and hot. The service is usually very good. My only complaint is that if you are there to have a fruitful productive conversation with anyone, it will be very hard. It is incredibly loud and communication is tough. But other than that, I highly recommend it. read more

Went to Stella for a group dinner- ordered the posole. Spicy, not alot of flavor. A red posole, no depth to the broth. Ended up sending it back. Great space. It's modern but not cold, friendly but cool. Might be loud when crowded, but that wasn't a problem when we ate there. The problem was three-fold: 1. Lots of things on the menu pose a challenge on one level or another. Don't like mushrooms? The steak sandwich has them. Want fries? Nope. Never seen a Caesar salad with sun dried tomato chicken salad on it? Here it's available, plus a bunch of other things rarely seen on a Caesar. It's not bad, exactly, but if you eat with a picky person (as I do) it seems as if every simple thing has some complicating factor. 2. Service was impersonal and imperfect. We'd never been to Stella Grill before, so we needed a minute to order. Our waitress was kind enough to ignore us for a nice long time so we could think. I noticed, too, that when she delivered the side salad to other tables it came with bread. Not for me. I'll get nothing and like it. 3. A few details on the food really seemed odd. For example, the little salad that comes with the crab cakes (pretty yum but unattractive) has a balsamic dressing. It's very good. But the side salad comes with a vinaigrette that I think was pure lemon juice. It was truly unpleasant to eat. My husband ordered his burger with no cheese and the mayo on the side (which really means: no mayo) but no one offered ketchup, mustard, or any other sauces. So his burger was, as others have complained here, pretty bland. Atmosphere: fun and attractive. Service: not great. Food: some things were tasty, others boring or actively bad. We won't refuse to go back with friends but we won't choose to go there again. read more

Had the salmon which had a great pumpkin sauce but the salmon was too undercooked for my liking. Had the goat cheese appetizer which for 6$ was really tasty. Boyfriend and son had the steak medium rare and the presentation was beautiful but the steak lacked flavor even after a salt and pepper attempt. Eventually asked for steak sauce which seemed criminal since a 19$ steak shouldnt need it. Would try again but a long ways down the road and for lunch. I wanted to love this place as it had been on my list of places to try for dinner for a long time. We had the bacon wrapped jalapeno shrimp appetizer and that was amazing, really if I had just ordered three of those for dinner, I probably would have given this place an extra star. My husband ordered the new york steak and loved it. He said it was cooked perfectly and loved the mashed potatoes it came with. I ordered the prawn and pancetta pasta dish, and while it tasted fine, it was a huge disappointment. 4 shrimp, like 3 tiny pieces of pancetta, a handful of overcooked fettuccine, and what resembled a side salad on top of it all. I'm not really sure who came up with the idea of putting a pile of lettuce on top of this dish, but it didn't make any sense, and wasn't very tasty. Cool little restaurant that is a little out of the way. Unless you are from the Holladay/Millcreek area, you probably wouldn't know that Stella's was even there, but after visiting for lunch today, I will be sure to spread the word. The menu is pretty typical for a smaller place like this. One page, with about 20-25 dishes. Burgers, sandwiches, Salads and some Mexican dishes. Entrees range from $8-11 for lunch and the portions were large. I ordered the fish tacos, which were excellent, and they came with a side of corn salsa, beans and rice. My buddy had the chicken fajitas, which also had the same sides. We were seated quickly, and the wait staff seemed pretty wiling to serve. Had lunch with my cousin and my aunt, they love this place and come here at least once a week. It's an old firehouse converted into a restaurant and they've kept the original doors so it's got a lot of character. It was busy but the service was perfect. I ordered the steak salad which was ah-mazing - and I am a critic of steak salad. I like my steak medium rare and prefer balsamic dressing and this salad had that and more. The artichoke hearts, tomatoes, red peppers and the Kalamata olives add the right flavor to make it perfect. If you like salads this is one that is very satisfying. read more

I have always believed you can tell the quality of a restaurant by how well they make a their Reuben. What I have learn for trying Stella Grill Reuben On Rye served with a side of fruit, is that they have set the bar high. Stella Grill has an inviting atmosphere however is a bit cold. If you visit in the winter you may want to keep you jacket on. The outdoor seating is great for those long summer evenings. It's also a bit loud so you may have to speak up if you're with a group and care for the person on the other end of the table to hear. All-in-all I'd recommend you give it a try. A second time I went the food was definitely a miss. Got a burrito, it was bland and came with way to much sauce of some sort. The tartness of the shredded cabbage mixes beautifully with the sweetness of the Kobe-style cuts of beef, grilled perfectly on a ciabatta style roll. Great food, excellent service and reasonable prices. This is my fallback place, and I have dined here many, many times. When I say 'many' I mean like 20 or more. This is also the place I went on my first date for lunch with my faience and we go back a lot. Stella Grill is located in a weird neighborhood in Holiday, or maybe Murray, or someplace in that area. The food is very consistent, reasonably priced and service is friendly and prompt. If you go there much, you will get to know the charming wait staff which will bring you back even more.
