We really wanted to like Ruth's Diner, especially because the setting is so beautiful. The canyon is lovely, and the flowers lining the walkways make for a pretty atmosphere. Unfortunately, the experience and food just didn't live up to the setting. We visited on a very hot day and chose an inside booth. We knew it was an old dining car and that it might be warm, and there was a fan, so we figured it would be okay. It wasn't. The booth was absolutely sweltering. By the time we realized just how uncomfortable it was, there was no one around to ask about moving. Then there were the flies--constantly landing on our food and drinks, which made the experience even less enjoyable. We ordered the Eggs Benedict and Ruth's Breakfast with pancakes. The Eggs Benedict was a major disappointment, especially given how much people rave about it. The hollandaise had virtually no flavor. A good hollandaise should have a bright, zesty, buttery flavor, but this was completely bland. The English muffin was doughy, and the bacon was overly thick and extremely salty. It was also served in an awkward little boat-shaped dish that made it difficult to cut and eat. I also have no idea what they do to their hash browns. They weren't crisp, had a strange orange color, and tasted almost like Rice-A-Roni. Maybe there's some kind of seasoning added, but whatever it is, it didn't work for us. Ruth's Breakfast wasn't much better. The hash browns had the same issues, and one of the pancakes was completely raw in the middle. To make matters worse, our syrup was forgotten, and we waited a very long time before anyone came back around to check on us. I could potentially overlook mediocre food if the price reflected it, but at around $19 a plate, I find the quality hard to justify. The interior looks charming in photos, but in person it felt more rundown than quaint. The service wasn't terrible, but it also didn't stand out in any positive way. I genuinely wanted to love this place. Given the beautiful location and unique setting, I thought it would be a great spot to take out-of-town guests. Unfortunately, after this experience, I wouldn't recommend it. The setting is worth seeing, but I wouldn't subject anyone to this meal. read more

It's tucked away in this gorgeous canyon just a quick drive from downtown, so you get these amazing mountain views right from the patio. The whole setup is super unique since the diner is literally built out of an old 1930s trolley car. Come hungry, because they start you off with these massive, fluffy biscuits that are out of this world. Such a fun, laid-back spot with incredible comfort food. Ruth's Diner offers one of the best outdoor dining areas I've come across in my 25 years of living in the SLC area. There's a back patio that's surrounded by trees offering ample shade and a quiet, pleasant dining experience (some nights during the summer there is live music). The menu boasts a variety of primarily American comfort foods (soups, steak, salmon, meatloaf, etc.), but salads and tacos are also options. And don't skimp on the dessert -- the chocolate malt pudding is famous and is quite tasty. The service was also terrific -- very friendly and attentive throughout! While it's a little out of the way to come regularly, I can definitely see myself putting this in the rotation of places to frequent, especially because of the ambiance. read more

Beautiful ambiance. The patio is relaxing and well shaded. At 72 degrees, breakfast on the patio was a gift. The service was wonderful, friendly, and prompt. The food is okay, not great, excluding thier "mile-high" biscuits. I don't know what magic they do to make baking powder biscuits so moist. But they are heavenly! This is a unique, historic spot in a beautiful area. Unfortunately, we didn't have a good experience here: We came here as a graduation meal for a family member. My husband has dietary restrictions that make eating at diners difficult for him, but we were outvoted. Luckily there was one dish he could eat--the steak and eggs. The steak usually comes with teriyaki, but he asked for it without as he cannot have added sugars in his food. After a while, the servers/staff brought out half our food. The other half apparently wasn't in the system, so they had to retake half the table's orders. Meanwhile, my husband's steak was covered in teriyaki, so we had to ask for it to be remade. The rest of the food eventually came out, along with my husband's steak, which was once again covered in teriyaki sauce. They finally got it right on the third try, at which point everyone else was almost done eating. I got a turkey sandwich with pasta salad. The pasta salad was incredible, but the turkey sandwich was sadly bland. I couldn't even taste the mayonnaise. Overall, I don't see any reason we would ever come back. read more

The hummus was amazing, as was EVERYTHING else on the plate. Oh my gosh! So tasty! My aunt had the veggie wrap, which looked amazing and she really liked. My cousin had French toast and my mom had the beet salad. They both really liked what they got too. We all enjoyed the drive to the restaurant and the pretty view too. Your taste buds get a treat right off the bat! I love the Pulled Pork Benedict. I am a big Eggs Benedict fan and was intriuqed by how unique this dish was. The corn bread mixed with the BBQ pulled pork and eggs + hollandaise sauce was the perfect combo. If I find myself back in SLC, I'll be sure to come back just for this dish. My friends and I went here as a last meal to end our trip and it couldn't have been more of a cherry on top! I wish I could remember our waitresses name she was SUCH a sweetheart. In fact, all of the staff were warm and welcoming. The restaurant itself is in a scenic area. It has a cozy cabin feel. I got the eggs Benedict and we shared an order of the orange cream cheese cinnamon french toast. Both were amazing. The eggs were especially poached well. The hash browns were crispy and plentiful. My bf and I went for a fun brunch on a fall Saturday morning and, as expected, it was super busy. We were able to get seated immediately as long as we chose indoor seating, so we did. Honestly I think it would've been worth it to wait for the outdoor seating since it was relatively warm outside and the live music really set some vibes! As for food, we both got the eggs Benedict, but my bf got a regular and I got a pulled pork. He liked his, I really liked mine. Their pulled pork is delicious! What a great diner/cafe. You can take the measure of a food joint's menu by how well and different they do the staples you've been getting for decades. Like I've had hashbrowns all my life, but the hashbrowns here were fantastic. Loose and fresh, without the hard exterior crust that other restaurants like to do. The same too with their fish sandwich. I was kind of bummed that Red Trout is not a lunch option like it is for breakfast and dinner. But this sandwich was a nice substitute with its crispy but not too crispy batter and flaky interior. This was a good second choice. I like the aesthetics here too. It's got a good rustic and homey environment. And the service was pretty cool, even substituting fries for my beloved hash browns and checking up on us regularly. The best compliment I can give to this place is that this kind of place that I wish I had close to me. First of all, the food is amazing. No quams there. My problem is accessibility. I was in a wheelchair at my time of dining there. I couldn't even get into the building. We had to eat outside and go around the side of the building to access the tables. It made me feel very uncomfortable and sad. I had to use the restroom as well, and that was EXTREMELY difficult! My sweet mother had to physically LIFT me up over the giant block of wood that is in the flooring of the doorway, then I had to have several people stand up and tuck their chairs in so I could fit my wheelchair past them, and then I had to maneuver my wheelchair into the stall. I was very difficult and I couldn't have done that without my mother's help. I shouldn't have had any trouble, and that's so frustrating because the food was great and the atmosphere impeccable. 2 stars- 1 for food and 1 for service. read more

Charming diner that is beautiful both inside and outside. We sat indoors, which was very hot. We could see that the hostesses were on their phones 80% of the time that we dined in (not a good look). Our server seemed friendly but we noticed he didn't check in on us as often as other tables. So unfortunately, we didn't receive and couldn't ask for the raspberry jam (to pair with our biscuits) that was brought out to other tables right next to ours. I've come here several times moved away and then came back to visit SLC and it's just as good if not better. Big portions of delicious food and their fruit cup is actually a good mix! I settled in the chilaquiles with chorizo and it was a fight to clean my plate and I can put it down! The diner is in a beautiful location there in emigration canyon. Our server was a lot of fun full of character and all of the other customers and patrons that frequent the establishment are also so kind and friendly. The Roasted Red Pepper Hummus appetizer was the highlight. The turkey and avocado sandwich was bland and the fries weren't warm. Ruth's has very good service. It is friendly and very efficient. They are very well organized so everything gets done by the assigned employee. They have many choices for breakfast so everyone can find something they may like, whether it is something savory or sweet, innovative or traditional. We liked what we ordered but did not love the hash browns. I ordered the chicken fried steak Benedict and it was good but both the breading on the steak and the English muffin were very soggy, and that kind of ruined the dish. They need to figure out a better way to serve it so it doesn't get soggy and unpleasant. My husband really liked the pork chile verde omelette. The pork was tender and very flavorful. read more
