I went on a Thursday afternoon and it was empty. The establishment felt like a mom and pop shop and there were only two workers at the time. I got the shrimp platter and it came with a helping of fried shrimp and a serving of fries. It does seem like you can switch out the side of fries with a different side if you'd like. South Charleston is just super hard to find parking... but google said that one of Charleston's specialties is the deviled crab from Dave's Carey-Out, you better believe I flew all the way out here and I MUST try it! Parked 5blocks away, and headed over! I took it back to my place at 15min away. Didn't eat until 30min later. Dang... my food was cold already, and it was still bomb! The deviled crab is pretty darned good! I got the seafood platter, and it came with a few choices of a side, and I picked rice with string beans. I forgot this side usually has pork in it, but no big deal. The entree came with fried fish, shrimp, scallops, and the deviled crab. The service was so friendly, courteous, and thoughtful! They asked what sauces I'd like, and listed them, and when they saw I couldn't make up my mind, they suggested all sauces! The place isn't too hard to find since it's right at the corner. I did think it was closed at first, until I saw people inside. The inside had benches inside to wait for the food, but there is NO dine-in (no tables). It was a pretty simple set up too. The main thing was the counter and the open kitchen. I had much at a couple of spots in the historic area, but, dinner was hands down the best. read more

After a string of pricey and disappointing meals in Charleston this place was a breath of fresh air. The first meal I was truly impressed by and felt like I couldn't get in my hometown of Seattle. We got the seafood platter and a large salad which was perfect to share for 2. The seafood was all tender and flavorful. Portions were great, the salad was bigger than I expected! Generous with sauces as well. The salad is basic but does the trick alongside all the fried food. Everything is well priced, definitely worth it IMO. Exactly what my belly needed to get filled with some good ole down south fried seafood! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with the most pleasant southern charm. My food was cooked to order and even came with a twist. The owner offers the platter with a choice of fries or "red rice." Well I have never heard of red rice so I went for it. If the ancestors didn't sing from the valleys of West Africa, then I was teleported back mentally. This is definitely the South Carolina version of Jollof, down do the grilled onions and tomato flavors infusing the long grain rice. Very home style with recipes coming from his family as this is a 2nd generation business. Great fried shrimp, fish, and fried pork chop! Vegetable menu changes some days but everything we tried was great, fresh tasting and reminds you of your sweet grandma's cooking! For $15 you can get more food than you can possibly eat and it is all so good you want to eat it at one sitting. But save some until tomorrow and the vegetables will be even better then! OMG, this place is so good.... Literally a tiny corner store in a residential part north of Charleston's old town, Dave's Carry out delivers. Based on some reviews I had read, I knew they were famous for their fried food / seafood and sandwiches, but when I looked at their specials, their Ribs caught my eye. I love tender, fall off the bone ribs (either pork or beef) and I decided to go for it. Not a lot of parking, my husband let me get off to order while he parked in a corner, waiting. Once inside, I saw the nice people behind the counter, friendly and ready to help. I placed my order and I waited a few minutes for my food to be placed in a take out container. Once I got back to the hotel, I enjoyed the deliciousness of the food. The ribs were tasty, tender and plentiful. The red rice was wonderful as well as the boiled cabbage. My first time here, two people working. I was greeted quickly and when I asked about the menu, the lady at the counter was quick to offer suggestions. We got the seafood platter (also, it's a bit more than the price on Yelp currently...I think it was $19). It had fish, scallops, shrimp and deviled crab. They make it right then and there. The fish is crispy and hot, scallops are not at all chewy (seafood regularly scares me hahaha), the shrimp are done perfectly and the deviled crab has layers of flavor that will make you wish there was more than one in there! My only complaint is that I wish I had a little more tartar sauce to go with it, but to each their own... it's a yummy mom and pop place. I love supporting places like this that do it well, are kind to customers, and are mom and pop kind of places. A little bit divey but in the best possible way... I wouldn't want it any other way. Wanted to hit this place up before leaving Charleston and so glad I did. It's truly nothing fancy about this place, but what matters most is that the food is fire. And fire it was! I ordered the Seafood Platter ($19.50), which came with fried shrimp & fish, scallops, and devil crab). It was all served up with fries and it was such a satisfying meal. The fish was perfectly fried and the shrimp was big! Never had devil crab before, but I liked it. It was crab cake-ish in terms of texture and taste, but wholly unique as well. My partner has always rant and raved over her favorite childhood carry out restaurant. She has nostalgic memories of her grandparents calling the restaurant asking Dave what's on the stove. I am excited that I finally gotten to pleasure to experience Dave's! The restaurant is located off of Morris Street and a nice quiet neighborhood. We got a nice sized order and everything was amazing. We got a seafood sampler that was a 10 out of 10 the shrimp were perfectly season. The scallops were nice large and juicy and the fish is fried to perfection. The red rice was absolutely amazing potato salad perfectly made, and the chicken was nice and crispy and seasoned perfectly. We also got a plate of the llama beans and rice and they took me back to my grandmothers kitchen. Everything was spectacular from the food to the customer service. Dave's is legit if you're looking for good quality take out fried seafood at a reasonable price. Shrimp and fries (fries are exceptional...steak fries) is like 12 bucks a meal. I'd say you get close to a dozen large shrimp and easily the equivalent of a large fry order at Mickey D's. Everything is made to order here so expect it to be hot and fresh, but because of the value pricing and quality grub, it gets busy here as well, especially at lunch and dinner time. Note that they close for a couple hours in the early afternoon before they reopen for dinner. Strictly take out and parking sucks as it's street parking, but hey it's Charleston so you basically already know that. read more

What a wonderful neighborhood spot! I arrived to Dave's on a Tuesday evening and found street parking about one block away. I was the only patron at the time and both the Lady taking orders and the gentleman cooking the food were delightful , polite and super efficient. I asked for a recommendation and I was pointed out to the combination of friend fish and shrimp which came with a generous portion of fries and tartar sauce. Both the fish and shrimp were super fresh and fried to perfection. They do not have seating available at the time, so we took our food home . It was a great meal for a really affordable price. Heard about Dave's as soon as we moved here. Finally got by after he reopened from the holidays. A real Mom&Pop shop with down home food. Shrimp are as good as anywhere! Loved them. Scallops were sweet & fried to perfection & fish was tasty. Very large portions. Will be back to try other sides & entrees although the shrimp were so good it will be tough not to order them again! Really good fried seafood. This place is barebones. A counter, a small kitchen, and a few small picnic tables with an old TV. The food was great. I ordered the mixed seafood platter, which comes with shrimp, scallops, whiting, and a crab bake. The fish was all fresh and well-executed. The meat was juicy. The batter remained crisp and flavorful. My only complaints would be that the fries were pretty underwhelming and they didn't give enough tartar sauce. The owner (Dave's son) is the cook and when I tell you he hooked us up, he def hooked us up! He added greens to our meals and extra scallops. On a trip to Charleston, SC, my girls and I got there around 7PM. Prior to our drive down, we agreed to get something quick, to-go, with good reviews. Dave's has great reviews and this was our choice. It's a small establishment but man while we were walking from up the block, we could smell the big aromas coming from Dave's. There are two small tables with a couple of chairs each. We ordered at the counter. Order 1: Fish and shrimp plate with fries $10 Order 2: Fish plate with fries $7.50 Order 3: Shrimp plate with fries $8 We waited for about 15 minutes, as everything is cooked fresh (win). Our food was piping hot when we got it. So much so you could feel the heat coming out of the bag. Our hotel was about 10-15 minutes away and once we got in, we went straight for the plates. The shrimp were a great size and had good flavor. The fish was flaky and perfectly fried. Please note, the fish filet did have bones in it. We didn't realize this until we started eating. The fries were your basic frozen steak fries (eh). The side options were between steak fries and red rice, fyi. Overall it was a good spot to stop and go, especially with their reasonable pricing. Flavor was good and the service was good. I'd return if I visit Charleston again, for a grab-n-go. read more

This is the first place I stopped on a weekend of fun and food in the lowcountry. I love fish and love it even more when it's fried. The prices are honestly unbeatable for the amount of food you get. I ordered the fried fish and fries. The fish was well seasoned and fried to perfection. My only complaint was the bones. I am so accustomed to eating fish with no bones that I had to get in the practice of picking through my fish for small bones. Its actually a great reminder that I'm eating real seafood compared to farm raised tilapia. If you are looking for a place to sit and dine you are better off getting it to go and eating at your final destination or in the car if you don't mind the smell of seafood. Upon entering, I saw a small seating/waiting area (2 benches and 2 small tables), packed with regulars waiting on their orders. 2 gentlemen cooked/took orders and were seasoned pros. The menu was pretty straight forward and I went with the Shrimp and Wings platter. I had a wonderful time munching on the shkrimps and wings. Crispy. Crunchy. Golden-fried batter goodness. They cooked them up real good Yelp fam. The only reason I had to take off one star was because of the fries. They weren't terrible. Deff not amazing. It just left a little something to be desired.
