Our meal was underwhelming. The waiter recommended 4 to 5 starters for a party of seven without being asked, which sounded like a sales job and would have been too much. We ordered two: the stuffed grape leaves, which were good, and the zucchini fritters, which were overly salted. One of us had the moussaka and two tried the artichoke moussaka--if you don't enjoy being overwhelmed by nutmeg I suggest you avoid those dishes. The salmon on the kale salad was overdone and the salad was just a bunch of large leaves that were hard to manage. I had the No.5 Pasta with meat sauce! It was sooo yummy! But it was a huge portion! Definitely something I would share in the future! I can't say we were all that impressed with the food. First off, we sat at the bar/counter. I can't say that the person who waited on us there was the 'warmest'. They were just OK. As for the food: the Greek salad was ok, though it was a bit odd to see a Greek salad and where romaine lettuce was used as the greens. It was quite a large salad though...much larger than we were expecting. The hummus with pita....we both said that the hummus was not as good as other hummus we've had elsewhere. The hummus at Stella's wasn't 'creamy', nor was it particularly flavorful...it felt a bit 'dry' compared to other hummus... The spanakopita was disappointing. The phyllo was 'flat' and hard....not light and flaky as I'd typically want for my spanakopita The lentil soup....again, we were not impressed with the taste. It was more or less a tomato-y broth type soup with lentils added to it. Not a 'lentil soup', such that you might expect to be thick, and partially pureed to make it nice and thick. I had a reservation at another restaurant and due to an issue it had to close and notified me 3 hours before my reservation. I called Stella's and explained my dilemma (as it was my birthday!) and the manager was extremely kind, accommodating, and personal. Then our dinner there was amazing and delicious and the service was phenomenal!! the manager came over to greet us and get service started. After our waiter was great and knowledgeable and even meet my moms dietary needs (she is vegan). Ambience was relaxed, we made reservations for 5pm and were sat immediately. Grilled octopus was fantastic, tender and perfectly seasoned. Happy hour offered plenty of choices. We had a "less than desirable" first three attempts at dining at Stella's. Each time, the hostess was unable to give us an approximate time for waiting/being seated. With hundreds of downtown dinner choices, it's okay to say that you're full and to try another night. Transparency goes a LONG way with locals. And so, we went back for a third time, on a weekday, right at 5PM, sat at the counter, and [exhale] had a lovely evening. The (two) counter setup is just cool any way that you're facing. It feels like community dining and they even have old timey movies playing while you eat. The atmosphere is dark, intimate, and upscale. Perfect for a fourth date [wink]! Our server was attentive, had great suggestions, and got the food out (with the kitchen) fast. As the counter started to fill up, we looked around at the other dishes; all were presented well and looked delicious. Stella's is constantly busy because the food is unique, packed with flavor, and presented perfectly. This place is incredible! I'm a big fan of Mediterranean food and Stella's did not disappoint. We were able to get two seats at the bar, right away, coming in on a Thursday night. Parking was pretty easy with spots on the streets nearby. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff are very friendly. We opted for small plates so we could share a few things! My husband and I popped into Stella's for Meze hour (happy hour) to try some yummy greek dishes. There were some great $5 appetizer options on the menu, like spanikopita, cheese and olives, and meatballs, all of which we really enjoyed! My husband also got the grilled octopus which was a relatively small and plain option for $22, and the moussaka, which featured a very thick (too thick) "bechamel" that I wished was much more creamy and saucey. Drink specials were few, and not necessarily a good deal in my opinion, and we agreed that the server wasn't the warmest. Our group of 4 adults attended a surprise birthday party at Sella's on Saturday August 3, 2024 at 5 PM in an upstairs room of the restaurant with 40-50 other guests. We were well cared for by Greg, and Mike, and a wonderful lady with dark-hair whose name I failed to get. All of the staff were so personable, they just couldn't do enough to make us welcome and comfortable. There was a second female staffer whose name i didn't get. She too could not have been more helpful. I wish i could say i have lots of experience with Greek cuisine, but I don't. I have only been to a small handful of Greek restaurants: Olympia Cafe in Savannah, and The Parthenon & Zorba's in Columbia. But, i know tasty food when I eat it. We were served a sampling of appetizers during the party. All of it was fresh, well-prepared, and delicious. Especially the cheese squares and boiled shrimp. The shrimp wasn't overly spicy but it had a noticeable zing that i had never had before. I liked it. The finger-food paired well with our cocktails. If the rest of Stella's menu is as good as our appetizers were, there is no doubt (like the Terminator), WE'LL BE BAACK! P.S. Again, a special sincere Thank You to Mike, Greg, and the 2 Ladies. A lot of coworkers have raved about this place and the famous grilled octopus. My husband and I decided to give it a shot on Friday night and I am so glad we did! Of course we had to try the grilled octopus. It was delicious and tasted a lot like Greek-seasoned grilled chicken. I was slightly disappointed because I expected it to have a more seafood-y, ocean taste.....but I guess that was my fault for assuming. It was really tasty though and we ate every last drop. We also ordered the hummus and that definitely lived up to its rave reviews. My favorite meal was the braised lamb shank. OMG. The noodles were fire. The sauce was incredibly flavorful and hearty. The lamb was tenderized and was basically falling off the bone. It was also a very filling meal and I was able to make 3 meals out of it. (Of course the apps helped fill me up, but still haha) I really fell in love with the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant. It was very sophisticated/classy and felt exactly how "downtown" should feel. The price point was in the medium-high range but I think the entrées were worth it. We received really great service! I just wish our server knew more about the dishes, but everyone was super nice and accommodating (especially since we did not have reservations). And as someone who loves learning about WWII, it was awesome to learn more about where Stella came from and learned how to cook. read more

I've been dying to try Stella's on our next Charleston visit, and here we are! I was beyond excited to bring my Mom (Whose Greek!) because we bond over Greek cuisine and my Yiayia (grandmother) is Stella also! Seeing a true Greek restaurant, where they don't Americanize the dishes, was so exciting for us!! We were greeted by a warm hostess who then sat us at the bar seating. Normally I'm not jazzed about sitting at the bar, but here the counters are very wide and low, so you can rest your feet and they are wide between stools so you can have plenty of room! I'm a light fixture girl and I was absolute loving the chandeliers over the bar! Beautiful! On to the food, we had the Dolmathes, Tiropita/Spanakopita, and Kolokithokefthes. The Dolmathes are the grape leaves, which were served cold here. They were delicious!!! The lemon flavor was perfect and the leaves were not dry, which can happen at times. The Tiropita, cheese pies, were amazing!! The feta was so rich and creamy. The Spanakopita were equally their rival and boasted a rich, spinach center. The wonderful bartender, Ryan, allowed us to do 2 Tiropitas and 2 Spanakopitas. They were baked to absolute perfection and reminded me of my Yiayia's! There is no higher compliment, from a Greek! We finished with the Kolokithokefthes, zucchini patties which substitute for the traditional Greek meatballs, Kefthes. The zucchini was finely shaved, then rolled and backed to perfection. The tzatziki sauce that came with each of these dishes was the most thick and creamy that Mom and I have ever had. It was absolutely wonderful!! Our night could not have been better. I've been sitting on this review for a week now, trying to decide the most diplomatic way to approach relating my experience. Honestly, I hate it when I'm compelled to write a review that I feel certain doesn't live up to a restaurant's reputation, but sometimes it's necessary. So here goes... The evening started off fine - great actually - because it was a split second decision to get dinner out, and Greek to boot. I'd heard Stella's was the place to go. Luckily I was able to get a reservation for 2 (bar seating). I called to inquire about this (after the fact) and I was advised the best way to secure a table is call the restaurant directly. There is walk up seating on the patio, weather permitting, but if you're local I wouldn't chance it. We arrived on time, were seated promptly at the bar, and waited a minute for the bartender to bring water and menus. The place was hopping so I figured we were in for a treat. Service at the bar that night was lacking, and my impression was that the bartender was favoring a couple regulars. It lasted most of the night. We placed our order and waited, and waited, longer than I would expect since I could see the kitchen was fully staffed. But eventually the food started to trickle in. My wife had the Avgolemono and Pekilia with a Santorini to wash it down. I started with grilled octopus and finished with roast leg of lamb and a Stella Artois. We both agreed the food was good and worth the price, despite the fact that the entrees were presented lukewarm at best. The wife didn't bat an eye, figuring it wasn't worth the fuss, but she did comment that the food sat in the window no less than 10 minutes while the bartender chatted away. I, on the other hand, felt my lamb needed a little warming so I sent it back for a heat up. When I saw the plate cross the line, and the cook start to put it in the MICROWAVE, I lost it! "Don't let him put that in the microwave!" I yelled across the bar, probably loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear. For that I'm truly embarrassed because it's not like me to do such a thing. Nonetheless, the bartender heard me and stopped that process fast. When my plate returned shortly thereafter, the lamb was cooked through, but hot, so I was grateful (and still embarrassed) and I ate it completely like a Catholic schoolboy with a grumpy Nun sitting beside me making sure I behaved. We finished dinner, skipping dessert, and headed home. Long story short is that the atmosphere and food were, well "Stella-r", but the service was significantly lacking at both the bar and in the kitchen. The food will likely bring back for a second go, but I'll be going incognito. read more

Great spot!! Perfect for grabbing a few apps off their Meze menu or a full entree off their Comfort menu - either way you choose, the portions are large! For apps, I recommend the Tria (pita with three different dips), Keftedes (meatballs) and the Grilled Octopus. For entrees I've only had the Pastichiatho, which is similar to a bolognese dish but the nutmeg gives it an unexpectedly sweet taste. Both the bar and the dining room are full service, and you can actually reserve seats at the bar through Resy. The bar is my preference but the dining room is nice as well, whole interior has a pretty atmosphere! read more

Let's see - we tried the lamb, lentil soup(salty), the braised lamb shank, Meze octopus, red snapper (fish of the day) Greek salad, galaktoboureko dessert (very light on the dough part and abundance of filling is plenty), Illios drinks, a special homemade signature cocktail blueberry drink, Greek coffee, Yahni beans, gigantes, and keftedes (a Greek meatball) All sides were flavorful with a burst of lemon On a Saturday we had to wait 1 hour & 20 minutes for a seat- be smart, make a reservation. During our 5 night stay in this area we had dinner 3 times here. My favorite was he daily fish special, keftedes, & octopus. Please know I do not eat whole fish nor octopus and I did at Stella's it was amazing. The octopus did not taste like rubber, it was soft enough to chew and the black char from grill was so good. The Greek meatballs are the most flavorful ones I have ever had. Don't tell my mother-in-law. Do t be afraid to try new things here it's worth it! The servers have great knowledge of the menu and ingredients in the food dishes. Also, the house red wine is Greek and pretty good. We enjoy sitting at the countertop you feel more like a family member than a customer. Best seat in house at counter is to the right of the host stand, the wall is behind you making for no traffic and privacy. read more

Hubby had the lamb shank it was excellent tender and cooked well. I had the shrimp dish and it was not great. The sauce was far too tangy way too much lemon.
