Stella's Lounge truly has mastered the formula for success! It includes a great bar that has over 200 Whiskeys, a nostalgic 1980's arcade and a graffiti-walled ambience to match. Since I'm a "foodie" to the core, I cannot say enough great things about their food menu that include Vegetarian and Vegan dishes. I've been eating Vegan as of late and my favorites from their menu are the Poor Man's Wings, (potato wedges tossed in your favorite sauce like Buffalo or BBQ sauce), and the Sweet Potato Burrito, (sweet potato/black bean with other veggies rolled in a spinach wrap)! Takeout or delivery are available and they CAN deliver your drink orders too!! Because of Covid, I oftentimes choose delivery and I've never had any issues with my food delivery....always on time, always hot and always DE-LI-CIOUS!!! read more

This may not be the place for you if burgers, deep fried food, buffalo seasoning, and food stuffed with cheese doesn't sound appetizing. Surprisingly, Stella's started off as a vegan friendly restaurant with only three burgers but then changed as customers wanted more meat. You wouldn't have guessed it if you were looking at the menu today since there is now over 10 different burger combinations to choose from. Stella's still has plenty of vegan options to choose from like their fried avocados and house made vegan patties. Even vegetarians can't say no to fried cheese. This is a barcade with plenty of beers to choose from. There are vintage games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat to enjoy while having a pint or waiting for your food to come out. The games are in good working condition and are only .25 cents to play. For a bar, the restaurant is clean, creatively decorated, and family friendly with great service. Stella's is one of my favorite bars in GR. Not only do I love the dark and eclectic vibe (Hello, they play the Munster's and other awesome throwback shows) but their food and drink selection is AWESOME. First, they have Mayan Mocha Stout on draft... SO SO GOOD. They have LOTS of whiskey and some retro canned beers. Second, their burgers are BOMB. So is all their other food, but their burgers... so good. They do have vegan options, too! Fun old school arcade games throughout the bar, too. Can be loud, but if you walk up to an establishment with skulls on the wall.. you should already know this place isn't for the faint of heart... :) read more

Cool atmosphere, good punch, old arcade games are unique. The reason we came was because we read about the "best burger in GR." Let me tell you the burgers here are average at best. I got the Gov. Cheese and my husband got the famous Blue Cheese burger. Both were dense and not seasoned. For as thick of a patty you should at least season or add more cheese. The burgers overall lacked flavor, had no sauce (aioli for example) to tie together, and the buns were so small in relation to how much stuff was on the burger that everything fell out. We weren't given any silverware so couldn't resort to cutting the burger up and eating with a fork after it fell apart. The "cosmic" fries had this spicy seasoning on them which prevented us from eating very many. Would say that there are a ton more places in this city where you can get a better burger! read more

This was my first time going to Stella's and let me tell you, the experience was fantastic! I find it hard as a vegan to find places that have a pretty large range of options and this place has it all! The service was great. Everyone there is super nice and helpful. The service was fantastic. Unfortunately the burgers were, quite frankly, horrible. We came here a few years ago before we moved out of state, and both the food and atmosphere were amazing. We returned today excited to have what GQ voted the best burger in America almost a decade ago. Clearly, that chef has left the building, and they need to remove that claim-to-fame from their menu. The burgers were bland and dry, and we feel over cooked beyond the 165 degrees they note on their menu. The fries, while cooked well, were over seasoned. I've had better tasting burgers and fries at fast food chains. If you want to have a beer and drop a few quarters in an old arcade game, this is a fun spot with great staff, but don't waste your money on their food. There are far too many restaurants around the area which are much better. read more

Customer Service SUCKS! I have enjoyed their food in the past. There was miscommunication with the hostesses, and a second hostess came up and rudely asked us what we were doing. We said we were already being helped my another hostess who was getting us a table. Awful vibe felt in the beginning of our service left the group feeling restless causing the rude hostess to come back and deny drinks to one person in the party who was upset because he had to sit alone. The hostess instantly assumed he was drunk because he put his head down and told him that the group could have drinks except him. Sadly we left and will not be returning. I wanted to like Stella's so much, I came here for drinks with a friend and it was super fun (the only reason they are getting 2 stars). It seemed so cool, that when my mom came to town I suggested Stella's because I herd they have veggie burgers. Well to start off they sat us at a table in the back next to the most obnoxiously drunk people I have ever seen in my life. Next the waitress was extreamly slow, and she must have been new because when my mom asked if the v burgers were black bean, or more like garden burgers the waitress replied "um I don't know, but alot of people seem to like them..." A little annoyed my mom just ordered it. Well they were black bean burgers, pretty gross tasting black bean burgers, and they took forever to come out. Really we were sitting there for 45 minuets waiting for burgers! I mean in what world does it take 45 minuets to make a burger when a place is half empty!? After eating one bite my mom was done, and she told the waitress how dissatisfied she was with it, her response "oh wow well alot of people like them". No sorry, no offer to take it off the bill, or exchange for something else, just "oh wow, well alot of people like them"? Stella s is a nostalgic stop in the 1990'with 25 cent arcade games, ninja turtles playing on the tv behind the bar, and plenty of decor that will take you back to childhood if you grew up in the late 80's or early 90's. That being said this burger and bourbon joint has bouncers who id everyone on the way in. This is clearly necessary as the place is filled with young college students. The food is solid ...greasy hamburger shop goodness, but the drinks are cheap and tailored to the college crowd. I ordered the worst old fashioned I have ever tasted. Although the bourbon and whiskey selection is promising, the mix is sweet and the drinks are served with double maraschino cherries. Do yourself a huge favor and stick with beer. read more

This place was described to me as a dive bar. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was more like a hipster barcade (arcade + bar) dark trendy atmosphere. I was in Grand Rapids for business and was running around with my more adventurous coworkers. The dining room was packed, so instead of waiting for a table we bellied up to the bar. The beer list was ok, but not as robust as I expect in a beer Mecca like Grand Rapids. This place specializes in "stuffed" burgers. We found out that basically it was a burger with cheese and stuff mixed in with the meat. We all ordered burgers, beers and an appetizer of fried avocado. The avocado came out quickly. They were battered and fried but most of the batter was falling off or had fallen off. The sauce was fine but nothing exciting and fried parts were constantly getting stuck in it. I wasn't mad at the avocado but it wasn't really impressive. Luckily the burgers and fries were excellent. I got the hot stuffed burger. It was awesome. Juicy and spicy and perfectly done. It was a great sized patty. The meat was gooey with cheese, and was almost sticky through the bun. It came with a spicy mustard that was super spicy and totally tasty. The music selection got my body moving even sitting in my chair. The classic cartoons and tv shows on the TVs really rocked the nostalgia. I even played some of the arcades while waiting for a table. Had the mild chicken wings appetizer, they must use their own special blend of sauce because it was excellent a nice change and definitely better then competition that specializes in wings. Finally the entree was a government burger with bacon and a fried egg added. The burger was massive and difficult to put your whole mouth around. It was real savory. The atmosphere is amazing with old school pin ball machines and electronic games spread throughout to use. Stella's will kick your flavor palates ass and then toy with your willpower just for the fun of it. For some of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's this place will bring you down memory lane with all of the arcade and pinball machines that line the walls of the joint (pac man, nba jam, mortal kombat, Simpsons pinball, etc). Make sure mom brings plenty of quarters... I've had this place on my bookmark list for close to a year now but just now was finally able to try it out. The food, simply put, is out of this world! We started out with the vegetarian (veg head) nachos as an appetizer. This wasn't your run of the mill plate of nachos: Cuban black beans, tempeh sausage, Queso, salsa, jalapeño, white cheese, etc. I'd put this up near the top of the list in terms of best nachos I've ever had. The plate was huge, full of thick chips that aren't going to break when you try and scoop up more deliciousness. I should have stopped there, as it was more than enough food, but my willpower was inebriated from the nachos... I decided to try one of the now infamous, thanks to the 2012 GQ article, stuffed burgers. It was a tough decision but I ended up ordering the Queso Jalapeño burger with a side of Chronic fries. I've had a lot of burgers in my day and this one was definitely in the top 5. The burger itself was probably top 3 with its unique seasoning and high quality beef patty. The only thing I'd change is the bun as its a little too much bread and a little dry. If they swapped it out for a Hawaiian style roll lightly toasted with butter it may pull this burger into the top 2 for me. The Chronic fries were by far some of the most uniquely flavored tator sticks I've ever had! They were coated in a "secret" blend of seasonings but let's be honest - they could have named these Buffalo Fries but then they would have given away the secret. Think Buffalo wing meets French fry without the mess. Delicious. Make no mistake - this full of flavor menu is designed to keep you drinking. I always enjoy Stellas and my recent trip wasn't any different. They have the #1 rated burger in America per GQ magazine, but the Sweet Potato Black Bean Wrap will always be #1 in my heart. And if you'll looking for an appetizer, try the Ted Avocado Nuggets. They are beer battered avocado slices. Yep, that's how they roll here: They have a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian sides and dishes all with a twist. Another fun thing about Stella's is that while most bars in the Midwest have sports on 24/7, they have old Star Trek and Scooby Doo episodes going all the time. Stella's Lounge is a lot like something you'd expect to find in a proper city. Not a place like Grand Rapids, MI. That's something that's definitely to its credit. Before you even get in the door, the place seems cool. It's kind of in a back alley looking place, like a secret club entrance, with all sorts of graffiti-esque style art painted on the walls. It's dark and dingy looking and that's what they're going for. I like it. The inside is more of the same along with some video games. Including Mortal Kombat II (the best in the series, folks!). A huge hip-hop looking mural is on the back wall that kinda makes me think of the movie Avatar. Seating seems sparse, but on the day we were there it was more than enough. I can definitely see how this place would get crowded quickly. Among the other customers, I felt a bit out of place... a few reviews mention the presence of many hipsters and that's precisely right. I think it's to be expected a bit after you look at the menu with its many vegetarian and vegan options. Good to see that they have a variety for many different palates though, and I applaud that. They're also big on the organic and locally sourced bandwagon which isn't a bad thing, but it's not a selling point for me either. Let's get on to to the good stuff. The food. GQ named this as one of the best burgers in the United States. I'd have to know what other places they tried to give it that title (and try those places myself), but I have a hard time believing it's one of the best in the country. Was it really, really good? Yes, it most definitely was - and it's certainly the best burger I've had in Grand Rapids. I went for the namesake burger (the Stella Blue) and was not upset with my choice at all. The stuffed cheese does, indeed, ooze out all over the burger and adds a very nice little touch to the uniqueness of the meal. The fries had a tinge of spice to them, which made me enjoy them all that much more. I didn't need any ranch like another reviewer mentioned, but it might be an option for you if you're a wuss. ;) Service was very attentive but not overbearing. A nice balance. Refills were always brought upon request and in a timely manner. Our waiter even had quite a few tables and it never seemed like any of his tables were forgotten or an afterthought. There were a few options on the menu which I'm definitely going to go back to try... so that says something about how awesome a lot of the food sounds here. That burger can't be messed with either. I do think the prices here are a bit high, especially for bar food, but I suppose that's to be expected with locally sourced/organic food. It's the price point that, more than anything, would really stop me from making Stella's a more frequent stop when I'm downtown. Well, that and the calorie count... While I'm not a huge fan of the hipster crowd and many of their attitudes, you can't fault a business for its clientele. The decor, classic video games and vintage tv shows were a blast. There was a good mix of ages, which made us feel comfortable. Definitely try the poor man's potato wings if you're ordering food and can't decide on an appetizer. Also, super reasonably priced drinks are nice! I've gone there quite a few times on a Friday or Saturday night and it's a blast because I love throwback music! The dance floor does get quite crowded though, which I'm not into. The half and quarter star system needs to be applied here are 3..3/4 starts are in order. Very cool ambiance, dark and NYC Downtown nightclub-ish with Speed Racer, Land of the Lost & an all time favorite of mine, good 'ole Scooby Doo playing upon the flat screens. Deep fried avocado (Ted Avocado Nuggets)-what a concept and totally delivered the flavor pact punch I had hoped. The slices/nuggets kept their moisture inside these encrusted beauties.The Stuffed tots were very thick, almost clumpy, the bacon, cheddar & chive stuffing brought a wonderful balance. At $6.00 for four, it was a good deal, not so much with the burgers as were at $11.00 each. The Queso Burger beat out my Mr. Fables which was a burger built with olives, good in theory but was not what my palate had envisioned. To me the best of the lunch options I had consumed in my 3 times at Stella's was the Angry Pig Taco's. The 2 pitchers of Sangria were good in look, concept but lacked in taste and overall alcohol consistency. The mustard oddly enough was amazing as was the Cole slaw. Mustard has a jalapeno infused bite that warmed your throat and the Cole slaw has a coriander or cumin taste that will be long remembered. read more

Not impressed with Stella's at all......I'm not really sure what the hype is about this place. 1st problem: Don't go on a Saturday night. There was a 2 hour wait, so we put our name in, and walked over to Hop Cat. We got seated faster at Hop Cat.....there's not much seating at Stella's-- a few tables by the bar and some tables in a room in the front of the restaurant. 2nd problem: The "main" entrance seems to be at the back of the restaurant. So on a busy night, you have to elbow the guests and wind around the crowded bar area to get to the opposite side of the restaurant by the video games to the hostess stand. whew! It seems like they need to move the stand to the other side of the building. Thirdly, it's really a whiskey bar, so if you want a large selection of beer, go to one of GR's local breweries. Otherwise, the whiskey selection is HUGE! So, we decided to come back on a Monday night instead since I really wanted to try their highly-acclaimed burgers. The place was almost empty on a Monday about 6pm, so we got seated right away. Our server was very nice, but strange....he kept talking about "the industry" and the perks and negatives of being in "the industry". What he didn't know, was that I had been a server in 2 restaurants for 3+ years, so his "industry" talk didn't make him any cooler in my mind. He was very knowledgeable about the drink and food menu. I ordered a cider and the queso jalapeno burger. The cider was really good-- dry, but not too sweet. It was served in a large can; I almost couldn't finish it! My burger was supposed to be stuffed with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese with queso cheese dip and pickled jalapenos on top. The only things that were good about the burger were the bun & queso cheese dip. The bun was amazing--- sweet, soft, and chewy. The queso cheese dip was gooey, spicy, and really flavorful! It did not taste like the fake yellow cheese that comes from a jar! My burger was not stuffed with jalapenos; they were only on top-- all over. There were way too many of them! It was stuffed with cheese that was oozing out all over! I got very annoyed trying to eat the burger because it kept falling apart-- chunks of the meat would just fall off like icebergs onto my plate. I really just needed to eat it with a knife & fork. The meat itself was not tasty; it really had a metallic taste. I love flame grilled burgers, and these are NOT-- I do realize that it's difficult to grill a stuffed burger, but I much prefer a charred piece of beef! (I'm assuming that these are cooked on a flat-top.) I'd recommend a bit more seasoning added to the meat, which may allow for a "crust" to form on the meat as well as pressing it together more after stuffing to prevent it from falling apart. Overall, I did like my cider and their fries (better than Hop Cat's fries), but I'd rather get a burger somewhere that grills their meat! You can put all the toppings you want on a burger, but if the beef isn't flavorful, seasoned right, or cooked to enhance the flavor, then those toppings aren't going to add anything. My friend and I came to Grand Rapids to watch my friend do a half iron man....so we decided to stuff ourselves to feel better about our lack of doing a half iron man... I know nothing about GR, but Stella's was close by and had good reviews, so I figured why not. The interior is dark, and I'm not sure what exactly they're going for here...it's pretty dark inside, but there's also an arcade vibe, but it also gives off the illusion of being family friendly...idk. Maybe it's just me cuz I'm not familiar with this place? I know this place is known for burgers, but nothing was really doing it for me...so I went with the philly steak sandwich and their spicy special fries or whatever. And I'm sorry, I was less than impressed.....the sandwich was supposedly on garlic bread, but I tasted pretty much zero garlic. The steak was good but there wasn't much. And the fries? Man, what a missed opportunity. They weren't spicy, and rather than being coated and friend in, like it was part of the recipe, it almost seemed like they just dumped a bunch of powder/seasoning on the fries at the end, if that makes sense? Great seasoning and my June burger had the rigjt amount of zip. We both gave high marks to the burgers. I can see why this establishment rates so highly. Shot and a beer sloppy kinda place. Or maybe that's why we went there? Either way, it fulfilled what we were after. We got there with just 3 minutes to spare to order food and landed ourselves a spicy jalapeño jack burger and grilled cheese (the vegetarian one), some beer, and a couple o shots of their "soup of the day." Now anyone that says this is "MI's best burger" hasn't been to metro-Detroit BUT I'll dismount from my high horse and admit that it was a really good burger, sloppily handformed and damn tasty at just about midnight. The grilled cheese was also really good. The fries were nicely fried and had an interesting, addictive taste that left an after morning residue that smelled like onion powder and vinegar. I thoroughly enjoyed our stop over at Stella's. We were in town for a concert next door, and decided to give Stella's a try. First of all, this place is different - in a good way. Just prepare yourself. The music is loud-ish (and is like listening to channel 8/9 on SiriusXM, again in a good way). They have a solid collection of older arcade games (not on free play, but I get it). They are busy on Friday nights (can't speak for any other night of the week). The service is excellent - we sat in the "back room bar" for lack of a better name for it. There were 2 servers working together to service all the tables, and they did a great job. The food is very good as well. We shared the stuffed tots, and each had a burger (I had "The Buffalo", she had the "Big Balla"). We recommend both. SO FUN!!!!!! From the minute we walked in we were surrounded in fun! Retro pinball machines everywhere. Colorful murals and eclectic paintings. Service was awesome and the best part was making our own Bloody Mary!! The food was delish and so many different choices. Great time!! read more

I like their burgers but also their spicy chorizo burrito. Great for sandwiches, not for full steak or other main entrees. Interesting vibe here, music is not mainstream pop fare and wall decorations are colorful and a bit odd but fits with the overall feel of the place. There is a parking ramp right across from the Commerce street entrance worth using if you can't find a spot on the street nearby. They have a full bar but emphasis here is on whiskey and whiskey-based drinks. Would not recommend the BLT nachos. The cardinal rule for great nachos is that the toppings aren't just on the top layer of chips - these violated that rule. read more
