So where did my previous review go? So here we go again. Hipster crowd and place. Can't believe how packed it is w college kids on a Thursday night in the summer. Tons of drafts but nothing notable as they had none of the New Holland or New Belgium on tap when we visited. Service is grumpy and spotty. Food selection is interesting and intentionally spicy to keep you drinking, I am sure. LOVED the video games and TVs showing all the retro cartoons. It's a ADHD kid's heaven. Stella's definitely has amazing food, ESPECIALLY their burgers! I've been there on 2-3 occasions and have always had really nice servers and delicious food. I will say that if you're someone who doesn't like noisy spaces it may be a bit overstimulating. But if you're looking to be around lots of people and activity--a bar, restaurant area, arcade games, background music... then you'd probably have a great time! read more

Wow.... This place is outstanding . I ordered my food to go and it was amazing , I can't imagine what a dine in experience is like . I called in my order and it took about 15-20 min to make . While I sat at the bar I tried one of MI own cider . It was a ginger peach , and it was a tall can for $6. The bartender was super nice and gave awesome service . The ambiance of the restaurant was cool . It has old school arcade game lined up in the front . The bar had old ticket stubs built into it . I'm a huge wing head and their wings were not disappointing at all . When wings are ordered to go they seem to somewhat sacrifice good quality . These wings should make a school for all other wings to go to. The meat was juicy and not at all dried out . It had plenty of sauce and full of flavor . I also ordered a pickled vegetable appetizer . I have never seen or heard of anything like it . It came with all sorts of pickled vegetables ( green olives , pickles , carrots etc) pita bread and humus. I don't even like humus but I saved the remainder of it to bring home and eat with more vegetables ! My boyfriend got a olive burger they he said was amazing. Stella's is an interesting combination of college rocker bar specializing in PBR and a whiskey bar with a massive whiskey list. The place is always packed at night, but during happy hour you can walk in and get probably the best burgers in town for 6 bucks(normally 10-12). On my last visit we had the bacon and cheddar tots, which were acceptable, but don't really stand out above any other fried cheesy potato appetizer in the world. The part that really stood out was the burger, I had the buffalo, which was a blue cheese stuffed burger with buffalo sauce and onion ring on top, the beef was juicy with great flavor, the roll was amazing, soft, chewy and perfect. Found this place based on Yelp reviews. Service was amazing; the waiter was so nice and explained the menu thoroughly when we told him it was our first time there. The tater tots are amazing! The wings were great but ordering two appetizers was a bit much. We were stuffed by the time the burger got to the table. This place is a Grand Rapids icon and is beloved by all. I'm going to be honest and say, although their burger is noted as one of the best in America, it's not my favorite burger. You have to try a Stella's burger for yourself, though! They have plenty to choose from, they are big and the fries they come with are a joy. However, if you don't like spicy then don't order fries!! They have a crunchy, spicy seasoning on them. I really, really enjoy their nachos and I think the best part is the queso. I've had the buffalo wings and I thought they were delicious, but I'm not a huge fan of the vegan ranch. It just leaves me aching for the real stuff. If you don't like loud and crowded bars then steer clear of Stella's because they are pretty much always busy. Saved us from a bad experience at founders. Fast friendly service . Great crack fries truly enjoyed the angry pig tacos . Not so sure the wife will appreciate them later tonight but I loved them. Stella's offers both a great atmosphere and delicious burger. I've had many on their regular menu and sampled numerous of their monthly special "creature features" and have never been disappointed. Although, their food is delicious (even the non-burger choices- try the nada cubano and you may never order a burger there again!) I come back time and time again for the atmosphere. It is laid back and fun. The decor is dark and restaurant uses arcade games as art but it never seems dim. They have good happy hour options, and on Thursdays, they offer $5 off all burgers with a drink purchase. read more

The burger that is so highly rated was a huge disappointment to the level I wouldn't doubt the owner didn't bribe someone to secure the best burger in Grand Rapids rating. Honestly, Red Robin has far tastier and juicier burgers in my opinion. My burger was so overdone, it looked more like something that might be found in an urn. I asked for medium rare and what I got back appeared to be much closer to cremated. Will I come back? Absolutely, for the Scotch and bourbon, but I can't see ordering food that tastes like dust to dust, ashes to ashes. They could diversify their business and change the name to "Stella's Lounge and Crematorium." One more thing, I don't like the parking situation or the clientele. Lots of image obsessed poseurs. I truly love Stella's: the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, and [usually] the crowd. However, I must say that very much miss the days when one half of the building was a classy bar called The Viceroy, and Stella's restaurant & bar occupied the other portion. Eventually, Stella's expanded into the entire space. Much of the cool red lighting and black walls and such still linger from The Viceroy era, but the funkiness/grunginess of Stella's has overtaken the establishment with graffiti murals and a fuckton of retro arcade boxes with some serious 80's and 90's classics like Ms. Pacman, Tron, Tetris, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter II... it's a good ol' nostalgic time if you have a few quarters in your pocket. Also expect retro cartoons like Scooby Doo, He Man or the old Mario Bros. tv series to be playing on their flatscreens. Moreover, they generally play great music. Stella's is the only bar in town where I've heard Portishead's Dummy album from start to finish, so mad kudos on that. The drinks are not especially cheap, but definitely reasonably priced, and they're always running specials. Great tap list too. Oh, and I can't forget to mention their Stella Punch, which might be their biggest bang for your buck. It's a very high gravity amalgam of various liquors and fruit punch (maybe some wine mixed in too?) in a big black plastic cup. Goes down easy and makes you more fun VERY quickly. Plus you get to keep the cool black cup which may or may not have Bruce Lee or Iggy Pop on it. The food is excellent. I took my picky parents to their Sunday brunch recently and they loved it. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Their seasoned "chronic fries" are legendary, as are their "vegan wings." So this is a funny subject because whenever i rave about Stella's vegan wings to unknowing friends, their perplexed reactions are quite entertaining. So basically they're imitation "chicken" clusters, probably derived from some sort crazy GMO soy god-knows-what, slathered in one of their various buffalo wing sauces, deep fried vegan deliciousness. Whatever vegan wings actually are made of, I don't really care because they taste amazing, and always satisfy my greasy junk food cravings. My favorite flavor is the sweet chili sauce and i like to dip them in their [actually hot] house hot sauce. Paired with their slightly spicy seasoned chronic fries and a Stella Punch, I have been known to go into a yoga flame trance, ready to destroy anyone at Street Fighter II. The ambiance is mixed. It is very dark inside, which makes it hard to read the menu. Most of the seating is raised tables. The music is a little loud, but not blaring. The service is slow but very friendly. I ordered Bacon Fat Popcorn, Gov't Burger with fries, and a Pepsi. The popcorn at first seems ordinary but then you find it addicting. The Gov't burger is a burger with white cheddar inside the burger. I added bbq sauce which is a sweet tangy sauce that looks like french dressing but it is a very tasty bbq. The burger was soooo good. I have a new #2 burger for GR. The fries were good but not great. The only issue with the drink is they have a 2 page menu for alcoholic drinks but non alcoholic drinks are hard to find. Overall a great experience. 4 1/2 stars would be more accurate. In a nutshell: great burgers, beer, tons of 80's video games, cool vibe (sometimes a "I'm too cool" vibe...) They have vegan and vegetarian options, as well as good ole fashioned beef burgers. Good beer selection. Prices aren't too bad. Finding a seat for lunchtime usually isn't a problem, but evenings can be busy and packed with people who are there to hang out all night instead of just eating dinner and leaving... which is fine, but it doesn't free up tables very quickly. Hint: The "main" entrance off the parking lot is actually at the back of the restaurant, so you'll have to walk all the way through to find the hostess stand. We came to Stella's for dinner on a Saturday evening, after finding out that Hop Cat had an hour wait and I'm really glad it worked out that way! There was a wait when we arrived, but we didn't care because they had tons arcade games to keep us busy while we waited. We played one game of Pac Man and Mortal Kombat and our table was ready! The atmosphere here is really cool and fun. It doesn't feel like your typical bar/restaurant. Our waiter was super friendly and helped my boyfriend pick out a whiskey he thought he would like since they have about one million to choose from - they literally have a whole menu, two sides, of whiskey, scotch and bourbons. We both got a burgers. I got the Hot Stuff burger which was stuffed with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese and he got the Stella Blue which was stuffed with blue cheese and bacon. They were both delicious and the fries that came on the side were amazing. We went to 10 different bars/restaurants in Grand Rapids during our mini-vacation weekend and of them all, Stella's was number one! We went out of control. We viewed the menu for the first time and lost our shit. We decided on the following items: *Meathead Nachos: holy moly are these the perfect amount of flavor/spice/toppings. Only one tip if getting take-out, get the chips separately. They were loaded with so much goodness that they got buried and soggy so that was a bummer but man the flavors were on point. That spicy cheese sauce is no joke. I wanted to do shots of it. *Bacon Cheddar Loaded Tots: these are not your normal pre-frozen bits of potatoes kinda tots. These are made with real potatoes, imperfectly diced and smooshed together with unicorn tears and baby snuggles (aka: all of the most magical things in the world) and the bacon and cheddar flavors were definitely prominent. I don't know how they make their special ketchup, but it's super tasty. *Government Burger: husband ordered this. It was overcooked, but all in all, still delicious. *Philly Steak: literally everything from the veggies being perfectly grilled to the garlic bread to the perfectly cooked roast beef covered in cheesy goodness, this was a huge winner. Come to think of it, I have never actually ordered a philly steak anywhere. But it just sounded delicious off the menu so I went for it and it was executed exactly how I imagined it would be. The fries were delicious too! We are new to town and this is definitely my top favorite food we have had yet! The saving grace was the service and video games. I was really looking forward to a great burger based on the widely publicized reviews. If this was based on the food alone, I'd give it 2 stars. This was my second time at Stella's (on my first visit, they ran out of buns so I opted for a Philly cheesesteak). We ended up at Stella's on a Sunday night a little after 7pm. We were told the wait would be about 35 minutes, no problem since they had quite a few classic arcade games to keep us occupied! Our party of five was seated at a table about 40-45 minutes, no by deal, we were enjoying ourselves. The server was top notch, very attentive and responsive. He took care of us very well the entire time. I decided to go with the Big Ballah burger - a burger topped with bacon, jalapeño poppers, and an onion ring, paired with onion rings and a Founder's Pale Ale. I tried the chronic fries on my last visit, and they were average tasting fries with some heat, nothing special. We didn't have to wait very long for our food to arrive. My burger looked pretty impressive upon arrival. I had to pull the poppers off and eat 'em separately it would be nearly impossible to take a good bite out of a burger that tall. The poppers were tasty, but lukewarm, as if they'd been sitting for a little while. The onion rings were pretty tasty, albeit the portion seemed a bit sparse. As for the burger....well, I can without a doubt say it was not the best burger I've had, not by a long shot. It was somewhat dry and void of any real good flavor. I wish I could say it was just my burger, but the other two in my party that ordered burgers were similarly unimpressed, maybe more so than me. It makes me think that the stellar reviews of these award winning burgers must have clouded by a few pints of beer or a few too many shots of whiskey. If you're in the mood for a great burger, I'd advise you to look elsewhere.
