I must say I have never been more disappointed in an eatery than tonight. Having read all the attributes and great things before I arrived, I never dreamed it could be so disappointing. Having lived in Richmond over 25 years and being a loyal patron to most of these other glorified restaurants/bars, and being one who not only is gifted in the kitchen, but truly loves a great time in the bar, must profess, I won't be going back again. I have held out for so long, I can't even tell you as my wife will attest to. This is what makes it that more agonizing. Was my food good? Yes. That's where it ends. Never in my 40 years of bar hoping have I had to be put on a list to sit at the bar, not a table mind you, a bar. The other vulture couples, also waiting for such a reward, were not informed of such rules and once discovered, quickly left. I, being a patient individual, waited my turn and during this happy hour, weekday timeframe , ordered a " house Chardonnay and house rum and coke" Again, this was at the bar and not with a waitress or at a table. My wife and I split 3 appetizers and had a total of 5 drinks( one was a Stella on tap) and our tab was over $100!! One of those appetizers was only $4. Do the math people. I was charged $11 each for a house wine and generic rum and coke, at happy hour! I could have been seated immediately, ordered a bottle of wine, and had two entrees and been cheaper than this! Upon questioning the total, I was then informed I needed to order a carafe of some swill and mixed drinks of any kind aren't on happy hour. God I wished I had gone to Mamma Zu's! read more

Weeknights can get a little crowded and the acoustics leave a lot to be desired--it's loud, difficult to hear if you go with conversation in mind. Stellas is hands-down the best food I have eaten in the Richmond area (and I lived there for 11 years). Unfortunately, we only discovered the restaurant a few months before we moved out of the state. The food is fantastic, the drinks are great, and the ambiance is cozy, yet vibrant. The prices are higher than "normal" restaurants, but you really do get what you pay for here. Every time I have eaten at Stella's, I have had enough left over for at least one meal the next day. The first time we tried to go to Stella's, we just showed up around dinnertime and realized that this is definitely a place where reservations are a must. I've been here 3 times in the past 6 months and it's one of the best Greek food I've ever had. Had the pastichio the first time and it was truly out of this world. Creamy, aromatic and different than a "typical Italian lasagna". The second time, a friend and I shared many of the small plates. They were all delicious, memorable and made me crave Greek food since then. Had the leg of lamb with fat noodles and brown sauce tonight. Wasn't a fan of the brown sauce. It Had a sweeter, aromatic taste which I feel is better suited for the béchamel sauce than the lamb. Friend had the no.5 pasta and I enjoyed that one more. Service was great, the house Cabernet is great and our Tria plate was fantastic as an appetizer. Next time I will stick with the meze dishes, which never disappoint. read more

Stella's is by far my favorite Greek/Mediterranean restaurant in Richmond!! I came in here not expecting much based on its location but I must say I was happily mistaken. Once you walk in the unassuming outside you are completely transformed into an adorable Greek restaurant. The ambiance was impeccable! To start the meal I started with the Tria. I recommend a thousand times, this dish was amazing. You get three dips and copious amounts of pita with it and the remarkable thing is the dips are wonderful by themselves but even better when combined together. If you mix the taramosalta and the melitzanosalta together on some pita it is absolutely divine. The only thing I must warn you about it they are just a tad bit garlicky but I love that. For the main course, I ordered the keftedes and the Cypriot salad. To begin the Keftedes are the best meatballs I have ever had. They are insanely moist and juice just seeps out of every bite with continues to astonish me. But at the same time the ends of the meatballs are a little crunchy which is a great balance of of textures. I highly highly recommend those. The salad was just as amazing. It was a light note to round out the meal because the vinaigrette was very light and acidic. What was most memorable was the deep layers of flavor a being shown off. The fennel was shaved just enough to give you a small crunch but the soaked grapes added another great sweet note but the pistachios added a perfect crunch. And to complete the salad was a grilled piece of cheese which was absolutely divine. To complete the meal I ordered the chocolates baklava. Now this was an amazing dessert however it's not like the traditional baklava. Instead of layers, the baklava is assembled then almost rolled like a jelly roll with little melted bits of chocolate incorporated within it. Overall an absolutely remarkable meal and I have continued to recommend this restaurant to all my friends!! read more

This was an amazing meal. Every course was fresh, and incredibly delicious. Our server, Ben, took great care of us, and his recommendations were spot-on. Even the olive oil at the table was so good that we ventured across the street after dinner to their market and bought a few bottles! Really great place with an awesome ambiance. Unfortunately the food was not quite as good as the atmosphere of restaurant, but still worth 4 stars. I was missing the great Greek flavors a little bit. I had the Pikelia; the Spanakopita and Dolmades were excellent, the Souvlaki was a bit over cooked and the Tiropita and Kreatopita needed more flavor. My friend had the Braised Lamp Shank which was very good and a huge portion. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable and paired me up with a perfect wine! read more

We arrived earlier than our reservation so sat at the bar and had some wonderful mixed drinks. Oh man, they were good. Had to try the octopus and we're glad we did. We will definitely get that again. I didn't care for the sausage appetizer, although he liked it just fine. Their taziki was very underwhelming. The flaming cheese was very tasty but oh so salty. The shrimp ouzo appetizer was good. The oven roasted lamb was not as good as I would have expected based on all the other yumminess. The opal kale salad was very good but I wish the would have torn the leaves rather than leaving the fully intact. The dessert was good, a little heavy on the cinnamon (some might not like it) It was like bahklavah but with hazelnut instead of walnuts. read more

I've been to Stella's many amazing times. This time I hadn't in almost a year since I had moved away. I took my boyfriend for his birthday for his first time and he absolutely loved it. Being back at Stella's felt like a home away from home! We got the saganaki(flaming cheese) to start, veal special, pastichio(lasagna with bechamel), and a bottle of Greek red wine. I must say that pastichio is the best I've ever had. It completely melts in your mouth and is so big you have enough for two more meals. Our server, Jack, was very attentive and personable. Moussaka should be the flagship of every Greek restaurant. White sauce on top should be a little jel like and thick, why is the top look like it has some brown powder? I've had plenty of Greek food in London and I think Greek food here must have "evolved". read more

DIVINE. Simply divine. Authentic, fresh, very high quality Greek food. Extremely (!!) generous portions but there is no cutting corners at this spot. So many unique, one-of-a-kind dishes, apps and small plates and the seasonal specials - amazing. We had a fig "caprese" with fresh mission figs, basil, and thick cuts of cheese drizzled with honey. Out of this world good. Also, to our surprise they have a presecco on draft! So delicious. These are just some highlights, I could go on for days but I will note, if you're into lamb - their braised lamb shank is the best I've ever had. Absolutely delicious ! I'm usually skeptical about taking people's word about trying new restaurants but since I was passing through I decided why not . It was also 30 mins until closing which also made me think twice but I'm glad I gave it a try. The bread that they start you out with was delicious and I also got the spanktavia?(im sure I butchered that ) but it was basically a flaky croissant filled with spinach and cheese. My brother and I had the braised lamb shank and I ordered the roasted potatoes . The only complaint was the $6 charge for the amt of potatoes. So yeah I've heard about this place from, like everyone, and truth be told - I think the place lives up to their reputation. Went for a work event, the place was able to accommodate our party of 11. The service was great (1 server), and the food was even better. Hard to say what was the best, being a work event, we ordered a little bit of everything. The house wine was mad decent and affordable, go for that. Greek beers were just OK per my colleagues - but the commitment to authenticity was very admirable. For the casual diner, I would recommend focusing on the small plates so you can get a taste of everything. The spot was quaint and small, but the place was packed (as usual, per my colleagues). Came in for dinner on a Saturday, without reservations. We were originally told there was a 45 minute wait, even for the bar because they do dinner seating there. Somehow, we got seated within 5 minutes - not sure how that happened, it was kind of disorganized. We may have displaced someone from the bar, unclear. Bartenders were friendly and reasonably attentive. Drinks arrived quickly; the Bailout was sweeter than expected, wouldn't get that again. Was disappointed to see that Stella was the only beer on trap. Not allowed to be surprised by that though. We ordered saganaki, which came out afire with deliciousness. I also got the braised lamb shank, which was beautifully tender, falling off the bone, juicy and savory all the way through, in a robust red sauce on homemade pasta. Wow. My husband enjoyed 5 lunches here before we took my parents in for dinner and it was well worth the 3 week wait to get a table. Our waiter, Jeff, was enthusiastic and loyal. We enjoyed the grilled octopus, flaming cheese, soft shell crab, filet with crabmeat and crab cakes. All dishes were outstanding and competed against one another as the best we've had! This review is so far only about the MENU DESIGN. I haven't gotten any drinks or food yet, and the service has been excellent (so far). The water is perfectly chilled and extremely refreshing. Food is delish! Prices are on the higher side. Especially for Sunday brunch for a coffee with alcohol. I've never been disappointed with a meal! If you don't get there early or have a reservation, be prepared to wait or sit at the community table. The crowd is pretty Richmond-esque. I went with my African-American friend and one of "those kinds of Richmond people" asked my friend if he was in the film The Color Purple. So, be prepared for sitting next to anyone at the community table. I've also had great experiences sitting next to strangers at an individual table and we start chatting it up with the table next door! The hype is real - I have been told by 10 different friends to eat here when they heard I loved Greek food and hadn't been they basically declared it a cardinal sin. One visit later and i am a believer! Stella's may have some of the best Greek food in central Virginia! Not only was the artichoke moussaka and the classic spaghetti me and my mom got were amazing but the sights and smells of the specials and various appetizers moving around the ambient dining floor had us wishing our stomachs were twice as large. Whoa. So good. So so so good. Went for lunch with some coworkers. How have I not been here yet?! Where to start... first the space. So awesome. Gorgeous decorations, looks awesome, great atmosphere. Wonderful wait staff, friendly, accommodating, prompt, etc. Then the food! Started with the Tria which is warm pita with three different dips. The typical taziki but the other two, no idea (wish they had explained a bit). But all were delicious!! Then I got the open face gyro. Holy moly. Delicious, presented wonderfully, huge portion size. I don't review places often because I'm a very busy lady-- at the restaurant I work at.... but when you recognize talent, hard work, and hospitality at its finest (even if it takes you 7 hours to post a review) let the people know!! Stella's doesn't need a perfect review about their food or drinks-- that's well known. Also very apparent when you drive down Lafayette and there's a line out the door. What's mind blowing is how key it is to have a host such as Courtney. The staff has always been on point and the very recognizable faces are because 90-100% of them have been there since they opened. Hosting is one of the hardest jobs that some folks don't even bat an eye at, but Courtney was one of the best I've ever seen. Wow. Simply wow. Thinking back to my meal here just fills me with happiness. They are accommodating for groups, which allowed me and my friends to all enjoy this fabulous meal together. The waiter was knowledgable about the entire menu and offered outstanding suggestions. Additionally, the establishment was clean and tidy with intriguing decor. We went here for the first time since the New York Times mentioned this as a "must-go-to" place if you are in Richmond for 36 hours.
