Picture this; we travel downtown to do a little Christmas shopping. Being the planners we are, we endlessly scrolled through Yelp looking for the perfect post-Christmas shopping meal for our group of five adults. We are starving, hangry actually. We saunter up to our chosen restaurant only to find a sign on the door that says, "closed for private event." Did I mention I was hangry? My husband suggests Jake Melnick's. It was within walking distance ... did I mention it was raining that night? And I was hangry? I was game for anything at that point. We arrived and waited probably four minutes for a table. A couple of the adults ordered a beer, the others ordered a Coke. We ordered a large pretzel and our mains. The pretzel was so good. All the meals were outstanding (a sliced brisket sandwich, some wings, chicken tenders, onion rings and a burger). Service was great. It was a little loud when we first arrived as there was an intense Illinois State basketball game on but as soon as the game ended, it was much quieter. Jake Melnick is our go to place for game night and wings night! My hubby loves chicken wings and he is always finding reasons for us to head there. I like wings but don't like the extra sauce and fried wings. Enter the Poncho wings, dry rub and grilled to perfection. Really top 3 wings I've ever eaten. It compliments well both with their ranch and blue cheese dip so you cant go wrong there. My hubby likes all the wings and i generally stick to the poncho. I got the boneless wings with firecracker and medium buffalo sauce. The sauces were amazing but the wings were very mid. It was all dark meat and not the best experience. Aye here on a Saturday afternoon, place was half full, sat down and order drinks and some appetizers, waitress was very nice. Place had lots of memorabilia from Chicago and had lots of TVs. I got lulus jalapeño cheese burger and it was pretty good, the cheese was very intertwined with the burger and meat was juicy, it came with a bacon wrapped jalapeno which I thought would come in the burger but it came separate so, little let down there. The problem was that when we ordered it took 1 hour for our food to come out and our order had 2 burgers, a salad and a wrap, which should not have taken an hour but the manager came over to our table and apologized for the wait and gave us a bit off the check, so that was a nice gesture. We popped in for a snack after a boat tour and not only was the bartender a friggin rock star and handling so much at once with grace and kindness, but the food was incredible. We got $8 mixed drinks, ordered a buffalo chicken dip and the fries pickles. The mixed drinks were pretty tasty, the fries pickles were some of the best I've had. Very crispy and the dipping sauce was absolutely delicious. The buffalo chicken dip had a great flavor, but wasn't hot or bubbling. I visited Jake Melnick's yesterday and ordered the half-chicken entrée. While the food was tasty and the service was solid, I have to call out a misleading presentation. What was served was essentially a leg and a wing connected--no breast, no thigh. By definition, a half-chicken should consist of one leg, one thigh, one wing, and one breast--literally half of a whole bird. What I received was a fraction of that, and it felt like a bait-and-switch. It's disappointing to see a reputable Levy restaurant misrepresent something so basic. I ordered for delivery through DoorDash on football Sunday and went with the boneless wings, thinking they'd travel better, along with the buffalo chicken dip. The dip was excellent--full of flavor, traveled well, and was the perfect game day snack. Unfortunately, there was a mix-up, and I received bone-in wings instead of the boneless I ordered. Not a huge deal, but it was still disappointing. The wings were tasty--maybe not the best in the city, but definitely solid. I'll be back to try them in person and get the full experience.
