Earlier this year my insurance was abruptly canceled due to not acknowledging a letter I overlooked in the mail. I went to the Wilshire location in a panic to try to reinstate it, only to find that most of the staff in the building were working remotely. Laura Kirby happened to be one of few that was in the office and she came down to the lobby to speak with me. She made phone calls on my behalf, did some research and helped me reinstate my insurance within about 48hrs. I was insured with Stepco (Mercury) for 13 or more years, and everything was going very well with them, both at the office and on the phone, they were attentive and courteous. I had no problem until I bought another vehicle, and they required three weeks to determine if they would provide insurance. I was never contacted about my request, when I called the answer was refusal. I understand that the world of insurance is in an upheaval, one has to swallow whatever you are dished. Prices are up the roof, and refusal of coverage is becoming more common. I found a good alternative, and Mercury apparently did not mind me leaving. I understand reps are bound by corporate laws. Called for a quote this morning, very unfriendly and condescending customer service. Spoke with a woman. She kept asking me things like I was a child. Asked for proof of address while I wanted a quote, told her I can provide that, then she gone say "if you're sure you have that, we can proceed", like didn't I just say I had everything. Had to tell her, u asking me that like I can FaceTime you rn n show you, she like, well after we will need verification. Ok,. Lady? This is why u finish the quote and go through a verifying process. Honestly, I had a challenging situation with my previous insurance policy at State farm. Long story short I spoke with Todd over at Stepco and this man worked a miracle. Not only did he alleviate my stress with his kind and professional demeanor, but he also explained what was going on with my policies. I'm not here to bash any company, but my situation with state farm was not what I wanted to continue and Todd helped me transfer over. I am saving more money per month on my insurance and I am extremely pleased with the service I received from Todd. Stepco has been my auto insurance for the last 5 years. Who knows how I ended up there- I remember an assistant doing some research and it seemed these guys offered the best options. I haven't given them too much thought these last few years. Your premium is due, and you pay it. I haven't filed a claim; someone hit me and from what I remember, I dealt with that myself. So the interaction was minimal- which is how you hope it to be. Last week, I get a call from an agent @ Stepco. She notifies me that my payment was due last week. "And I sent it in last week" I respond. She tells me she doesn't see it as paid. She tells me I am officially WITHOUT car insurance. GULP! Hearing my dissatisfaction, she asks if I can call my bank to see if the check has cleared. The problem there was I was nowhere near my office/check book, I was headed out for a round of meetings and hours away from being able to check. I was NOT happy. I knew I paid. I let her know my displeasure- strongly. and I tell her I'm going to have to be on the road for a few hours driving like I have bubble wrap surrounding the car. Ten minutes later, she calls back to say she verified that the check had been received. oh REALLY? Why didn't you check BEFORE notifying me that I was without insurance??! To say the least my driving record has not helped me get cheap insurance. Luckily I have a speeding ticket coming off my record in the coming months, but until then everywhere I go the rates seem to be astronomical!!!! I ended up finding Stepco and it worked out perfectly. Been with this agency 20+ years, service has slowly gone downhill. I also got the same phone call as Brother B. Agent's associate tells me policy has been cancelled due to non-payment of premium for past 4 days. No insurance on any of my vehicles for a total of 4 days! I never recieved a notice of any problem until after my policy had lasped. The reason I pay the agent a commission year after year, is so I don't have problems like this. A simple call advising me payment was past due BEFORE the policy lasped would have been much better for me. For my peace of mind, I've moved on to another agency. I've been with Stepco for at least 10 years for home and auto coverage. I've always received great, personal service from them and have never had any problems. We've only had one claim (that I can remember), and it was paid extremely quick. From time to time over the years, I've responded to some of the insurance offers in the mail, even checked with Costco's insurance division, and Stepco/Mercury has beaten all of them every time. Yes, a couple times I sent my payment right at the deadline and had to make sure they received it in time. I've got to believe that every insurance company will suspend coverage the moment your policy lapses, so I agree with the other reviewer that at least they call and let you know. read more
