Took my son for a routine eye exam--the doctor spent less than 10 minutes with him, yet we were later billed for 30+ minutes because they included waiting time for pupil dilation in the charge. We paid $85 upfront, then got hit with a $400+ surprise bill weeks later. When we called to dispute, they refused to adjust it. Beware of hidden charges and deceptive billing practices! Like the other reviews mentioned, this place will charge a $200 new patient fee regardless of how good your insurance coverage is. Double check your insurance coverage and know your EXACT visit cost before coming here. The lady receptionist that works here provides inaccurate and very vague information about visit cost even when I specifically asked her prior to seeing the doctor about my insurance coverage & total billing. I did not realize this until after the visit - but the office sent me a hefty bill, which was all out-of-pocket costs for just a new patient office visit for a vision screening. Doctor is okay, but cost of service is very high, and front office is super unhelpful. Just go somewhere else. I learned my lesson and hope that other people will be able to read this before coming here to avoid making the same mistake as us. read more

Note that Dr Prepas has relocated his practice to UCI. If you are visiting the new location for the first time be aware that since UCI is considered a hospital facility your insurance may not cover your visit. This happened to us and we went from paying approximately $110 for a children's eye exam to $377 (which includes a facility fee). Dr Prepas is great but we were not made aware of the change and it's quite a bit more. read more

My daughter had some red flags on her digital eye screening exam done with a phone app at her Pediatrics. So, we we're recommended to Dr. Prepas. He was booked until the end of the month; however, I asked to be put on wait list for cancellations. And, hurray we were able to get in a lot sooner. It was a great experience, my daughter didn't cry when her eyes were dilated because he was so patient and gentle with her. There was a dark toy room for her to play in so that her eyes wouldn't be bothered by the light. She did great, played the whole time while we waited. Fortunately, she did very well in her eye exam and everything turned out to be fine. read more

Absolutely outstanding ophthalmologist. My eye exam was 100 times more complete and accurate than going to just any basic optometrist in a shopping center or big box store. What could be more important than your eyes and I learned yesterday it's always best to see a real eye doctor. Dr. Prepas has seen my son a couple times in the past and was always impressed. When I needed a complete eye exam and glasses, I was thrilled to hear Dr. Prepas also takes care of adults, too. The staff at this office is very courteous and professional. The wait time was short and I got to see Dr. Prepas and he is extremely warm, friendly and took the time to answer all my questions. Just great care and customer service and I really appreciated it. My exam was way more complete and detailed than I had at a shopping center optometrist. There is a real difference in knowledge, expertise and care when you see a real eye doctor. I could not be more pleased and my 10 year old son is extremely happy, too. Dr. Prepas was very thorough with my 5 year olds exam. He made her feel comfortable and confident. He was so gentle that she didn't even fuss when he put drops in her eyes. We hardly waited at all and were out fairly quickly. read more

Beware! What was explained to us as a "basic eye exam" turned into a $500 dollar bill for a 15 min. visit. When I tried to have them explain the charges, I was given the run around and sent to the billing department, they never responded to my request for clarification of charges, and they sent my account to a collections agency without even giving any explanation of fee's or services that I requested multiple times. I am very suspicious of "up coding" in which this office has never reached out to remedy or explain my billing questions or concerns. We've had eye exams for our daughters since with no issues at all. We will not be returning to this office. read more

great, knowledgable, friendly, personable eye doctor. I went in with a problem and he took the time to thoroughly examine me, review my history, ask me questions, and explain to me the possibilities of what it could be. Although i had to be referred on to a specialist because he was unable to fully diagnose the problem, he referred me on to another great doctor specializing in what my issue is for more testing. he also does pediatric eye exams (there were several children in the office when i was there) as well as mission work in 3rd world countries to provide them with eye care. highly recommend! i will keep coming back for my regular eye exams. read more

Was referred to Dr. Prepas by the pediatrician. Let me say... 3 strikes! 1- had to wait ONE HOUR to see the dr. 2- dialated her eyes which included an additional 30 min wait ... Didn't know they were going to do that ! All this and didn't even do the exam yet! 3- I was not informed that the dr was running late... If I knew I'd be here for 2 1/2 hours I'd reschedule. If you are looking for a Optometrist for your child and one who really knows about eyes and vision not just a quick o you have 20/20.blah blah..Dr. Prepas is the best. He was recommended for my son by a family friend a few years ago and just visited the office for the second time this week. The doctor is great with kids and really defines the word specialist. My son was laughing through the whole appointment even with the dreaded drops in the eyes. The office is located in Newport as is very reasonable I paid $110 for the visit. read more

Picked up my kids early from school, drove 30 minutes in the pouring rain only to be told that they don't accept my HMO. Then they accused me of advising them I had a PPO. I wouldn't do that since I've never had a PPO. Waste of time. Too bad I never got a chance to meet the doctor read more

For $18 someone decided to write a negative review of Dr. Prepas, and someone endured a 2 1/2 wait wrote another negative review, yes, it's understandable, but dismisses one of the finest doctors I have ever encountered. Dr. Prepas does not rush your visit and spends all the time necessary for you to understand what he is doing. He is great with small kids, my daughter at 3 and my son at 5. How does a child explain what's going on with their vision? Or in my daughter's case, correct a lazy eye. Dr. Prepas explains what's going on with them during his extensive exam, knows what they need or don't need, and corrected my daughter's lazy eye. Yes, the wait can be long, and getting an appointment even longer. However, there is a very good reason for this, Dr. Prepas is the best! As for that $18, what a whiner! Just pay it and be thankful for the care you received from him over all those years. And that 2-1/2 hr wait, that is a painfully long time to endure, and I sympathize with you, but you're at a doctor's office, and sometimes these things happen--writing a 1 star review about your visit, that's very petty. Patience is a virtue we all lack at times. read more

My daughter was referred to Dr. Prepas by her pediatrician. I just read the negative review about the wait. We didn't have to wait beforehand but did have to wait for the dilation. I think that's normal and there was an appropriate darkened play area for the kids to hang out during this time. I thought he was efficient and thorough... And kid-friendly. It's not easy to administer eye drops to a 3 year old but he did it so fast that she didn't have time to panic. Overall, I was really pleased with the visit. read more

After my son being a patient if Dr.Choi in Long Beach for 12 years, made the switch to Dr. Prepas for mostly location reasons. I'm so glad we made the switch. We made what was always a 2 1/2 hour annual appointment in 1 hour and I learned something about possible complications my kid may have in the future that I was unaware of. No Contest. Dr. Prepas is the BEST! HE IS THE DOCTOR YOU CAN TRUST. I have seen many eyes doctors before him, but none of them are great in both personality and knowledge. He did a surgery for me over six months ago. My case was rather complicate. But in his hands, everything was done perfectly... I have seen another doctor before Dr. Prepas for my case, but after listened to her plan and evaluation on my case, I ran way... I was very fortunate to had him did the surgery for me.
