I asked this shop to do a diagnostic on my power steering. A different shop told me I needed a new pump which would cost $1900 to install. Sterling did two test drives and told me they didn't find any issues. They did a flush, replaced a belt and charged less than $300. I'll never go anywhere else again. My brother used them for years. Never go to this place! The owner has no idea what customer service is. I made an appointment with the owner, think his name is John. He was booked out 21/2 weeks. I told him the problem with my truck, he said bring it in on your date and we'll take care of you. Brought it in at 12:50pm and was turned away because he thought I was a no show. I was confused, no time frame was discussed when I made the appointment, just was instructed to "bring it in and we'll take care of you" (planned to drop it off in the am but had an appointment that I couldn't reschedule). In no way did John try and work with me and try and squeeze me in somewhere. Just blew me off and was told that he can put me back on the schedule for another 21/2 weeks down the road. I took an older vehicle here, which needed some advanced troubleshooting. It was not a simple repair and nobody knew what the cause of the vehicle's problem was when I dropped it off. After a few weeks I was admittedly nervous about how much of a bill was being run up, because other shops have charged me an arm and a leg for basic tasks. Sterling however did not do that to me. They eventually got the car running smoothly again and charged me less than they really should have. I think they probably wrote off a lot of their time that other shops would have fleeced me for. I was definitely treated fairly here and am happy to have my car on the road again. read more

Terrible experience. STEER CLEAR!! Dishonest owner preys on customers lack of mechanical inclination. Marks up replacement parts 3 times from what they sell for at local auto parts store. Short version Sterling Automotive missed the major brake leak the truck was brought in for. Instead they changed other parts that were "leaking" too. Sterling Automotive replaced parts that did not need to be replaced and one of those parts quickly failed either from hack workmanship or the use of shotty marked up replacement parts. Owner will not fully refund money for failed job or fix failed job. Long version I had my mother bring in her pick up for a catastrophic brake leak. She first tried her mechanic and then a mechanic I know to be good. Both were backed up a few days and couldn't see the truck right away so she made the bad decision to call Sterling Automotive in Edgewood. John at Sterling Automotive said he could see the truck the next day and have it fixed the following day. Typically the good ones in any profession are busy. Sterling Automotive was not busy it seemed. This should have been our first indication of a bad experience to come. John took the truck in and said it would be done the following day. My mother called to pick the truck up that next afternoon. John at Sterling Automotive said he had changed both rear wheel cylinders, was in the process of changing the master cylinder and "oh this is really embarrassing" John said, but another brake leak was discovered so the truck will not be done until tomorrow. Now a $600 estimate for rear wheel cylinders and master cylinder. No estimate for additional "embarrassing" leak found. I caught wind of all these apparent brake leaks and was shocked!! COUNT THEM...4!!! 4 BRAKE LEAKS ALL AT THE SAME TIME....according to John at Sterling Automotive. The truck is old (1989) however it is a daily driver (my mother is the original owner) and up until now it had never had any issues with brake leaks so I was highly skeptical of 4 different leaks at once!! Seriously what are the odds??? I advised my mom to cancel all services and pick up the truck the next morning. I felt we were in the process of being screwed over. My mother picked the truck up and paid the $300 bill for only replacing 2 wheel cylinders. I came by her place later that afternoon to inspect the truck's apparent leaks. I crawled under the truck and immediately identify a major leak coming from behind the fuel tank. This was the "embarrassing" leak that John said he had found on day 2 before we were to pick up the truck. How he missed this leak is incomprehensible!!! The frame rail was completely full of brake fluid and there were a handful of drips running onto the ground. I am 99.99% sure this was the leak that brought the truck into Sterling Automotive in the first place. I was completely appalled!! Why did John choose to replace a bunch of brake parts when the actual leak was staring him almost literally in the face?? To run up the bill!! Fast forward a short 2 months later and just over 2000 miles. One of the wheel cylinders John replaced has failed. He refuses to fully refund my mother or replace the wheel cylinder. Also I should point out that John proved himself to be dishonest when he lied to me about why my mother picked up the truck from his shop. read more

I had a chronic leak in a tire. Lost about 5psi a week. Took me two years, but I finally decided to get it checked out. I was worried I'd have to replace it, and a second tire to match. But no, Sterling found a nail, patched it, and charged me only $25. I will definitely return if I have any future car issues! read more

When you find a good Mechanic in life it's like finding that special vendor (Doctor, Real Estate Agent, Insurance Agent, Lawyer, etc. etc.) that you have total and utmost trust in and you don't ever want to give up. John and Sterling Automotive is that Vendor for me. I've always owned older used cars and with that comes a lot of maintenance. And finding an honest mechanic is like finding a needle in a haystack ... they RARELY exist. I've been ripped-off by more unethical mechanics than ANY other form of businessman. But I've found one in John Sterling and can't say enough about how he treats me. Case in point: on Christmas Eve this year we had just made it to Spokane when I smelled fuel. I popped the hood to find a fuel line spraying all over my engine. I figured I could jerry-rig it myself but then thought I'd better check with someone I trust. I called John right then and there and he not only gave me sound and safe advice but offered up an acquaintance's phone number to help me out in a strange city. This is the kind of service you get from Sterling Automotive. Case in point: In sending my daughter off to college across the state (WSU) I took our mini-van to John for a "once-over". It is an 18 yr. old vehicle so I expected to find something but hopefully nothing too dire. John found three things wrong with it which was going to cost me more than I could afford right then. He was aware of my financial predicament and rather than push me to buy a whole new product he helped me around the problem without costing me a dime (basically did it for free). There is NO ONE else I will go to if humanly possible, when a vehicle of mine needs repair. He's not the cheapest but he's not the most expensive either. What he is, is a pleasure to deal with, honest, educational, and competent. He, Jason, Cara and the whole crew at Sterling Automotive are everything you'll want and need in an automotive specialist. ps: there's always going to be some whiner that feels he's been treated unfairly (i.e.: Ed S. below) so you decide which review is more legitimate. There aren't enough good things to say about Sterling. I brought my Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7 Hemi to them a couple months ago for spark plugs and coil packs. They offered to do a full vehicle check-up just to make sure we weren't missing any major issues. I'm glad they did that check-up because it turned out there were several issues with my rig that made it unsafe to drive/ issues that could've left me stranded. But what really stands out to me was the demeanor with which they handled telling me about the issues... I didn't feel like I was being upsold on anything; you could tell they genuinely did not like having to deliver the less than ideal news. They addressed my cracked intake manifold, the 4x4 not engaging, as well as brake lines that weren't working properly. They got the parts needed quickly and performed the work quickly. Sterling came recommended by family, and I'll be driving the 2 hours it takes to get to their shop the next time I need work done. read more

I can't even express how much I appreciate the level of service and positive experience I had at this shop. I needed scheduled maintenance on my Toyota and I was over the dealership charging so much! I heard about sterling from a family member so I gave them a try. Not only did they fit me in right away and gave me a good price they went above and beyond! After picking my car up it was having some issues turned out to be part that needed to be replaced (nothing they had control over plastic parts crack sometimes). They ordered the part and got me back in on a lunch break to take care of it. Little did they know I was having a rough week and this was just adding stress so to have them take such great care to make sure I had a positive experience really was such a blessing! My family has been using Sterling Auto for years. I just got a new car and it stopped working and I was afraid of a high price for fixing it. I called Sterling Auto after hours and actually got an answer, he said to let him know if I was going to tow it to his shop. Sadly they were really busy so it took several days to get my car looked at, but it was fixed and for a great price! I was ecstatic. Only reason for not getting 5 stars was the wait to get my car fixed. I guess it shows how many people rely on this shop. I mean really I had never seen this lot this busy. In a day and age when customer service is non-existent and integrity has long been forgotten, Sterling Automotive Service in Edgewood has proven on several occasions that there is still someone willing to go the extra mile to take care of their customer. My elderly mother has had a couple of car issues over the last few years and John and the entire staff have really gone out of their way to take care of her on each occasion. It's old school customer service where quality, integrity and honesty along with a fair price are combined with friendly attitudes and plenty of patience when explaining the issue and fix to an elderly mother and her son. There's no bigger endorsement for a company then your repeat service, not only is Sterling Automotive Service the only place I take my moms car for service but it's where I now take my vehicles for service also. My daughter brought her car in and was told that it was probably a problem that was not even close to what she brought the car in for they estimated to be $600 when she called me up I took it to one of my friends who fixed it for $50 so my question is why my daughter was treated this way it's not fair and I don't want her taking advantage of. read more

My sons car was overheating badly, so we took car in. We picked up next day 300 bucks and started car and lights came on... it over heated just in a matter of minutes. The owner Steve was very condescending and told us it must of happened when we started the car and told us to go tp O'Reillys to get the codes read, which should of been done when they finished the car. By time we get to O'Reillys all the coolant had drained out and we had to buy more, which we were just charged for getting car fixed. We barely make it back to Sterlings and he wouldn't help us anymore with the car saying we probably blew the engine and blah blah blah. We hired another mechanic who found that some clamps on work wasn't done and its running great. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE I LOST 300 dollars , no apology or anything. I felt so used and disheartened. read more
