Steve knows his stuff, he's fair and he's personable, and his location is easy to get to as well.

We LOVE Gary Wood and the folks at Belmont Wheelworks. We met when my son (who has Cerebral Palsy…read morefrom a stroke in utero) was in his first bike race-- Gary helped us adjust our bike before the race. My son bit the bug on bicycling and when he was ready for a new bike, Gary helped us find the perfect bike, making some accessibility modifications like switching the brake sides to favor my son's stronger side, etc. I got my Stumpjumper here 20 years ago and Belmont Wheelworks keeps on delivering because of the people!

Here's a collection of my terrible experiences at Wheel Works:…read more Story #1: Took a bike in to get an insurance write up for estimated cost of repair/replacement (my biked was pretty much totaled). They said the estimated time for this would be around 5 days. After 10 days of them not contacting me, I called them. They said the write up was ready so I went to shop only for them to tell me it is not ready and to come back in a couple days. When I went back, the person who did the write up lost the paper and we had to go back AGAIN for a new paper. A 5 day simple write up turned into a 3 week back and fourth with this shop (and 3 weeks with no bike which is my main form of transportation). Story #2: I asked for 2 tubes for my bike and they gave me 2 different sized tubes BOTH OF WHICH WERE NOT THE CORRECT TUBE. Story #3: I asked for a tube for my bike and I gave them the model (which they sold to me). The person asked me what size it is which I forgot. So he replied "well I don't know that bike go figure that out yourself" (while he was at a functioning computer in which he could have looked it up for me). Story #4: I also had a kick stand repair after it fell off (my bike has a specialize built in kickstand) and it fell off again after 2 rides.

First thing to know about Papa Wheelies is that they straddle the line between "Cycling Shop" and…read more"Bike Store", meaning that these are people who take the sport seriously as enthusiasts, but not exclusively for the "serious cyclist type". This store appeals to both demographics, although the "everyday commuter" type might find the bicycles in stock to be on the pricey side. I do not fault the store, but instead greater consumer trends within the industry. The service is generally good and reliable, however certain times of the year service will be backed up (summer holidays).

I am an avid cyclist in road, mountain and gravel cycling, and Papa Wheelies has been my go to bike…read moreshop for a number of years. Their customer service and knowledge of all types of riders and bikes is why I choose to patronize them, as well as why I will send all my friends who I try to convince to get into cycling. They truly just want you to get the best bike for yourself. Not the most expensive or the flashiest bike. They know their stuff and they truly just want to match everyone to a bike that will make them happy and give them the best riding experience. Their repair staff is also top notch. I have had some whacky issues with my bikes over the years and they have solved them every single time. Several years ago, I purchased an Orbea mountain bike through them. Unfortunately, there was a manufacturers defect with the dropper post (not Papa Wheelie's fault - a manufacturing issue). The staff at Papa Wheelie's took my bike in and took care of the entire process in dealing with the claim and getting the part from the manufacturer and got me back on my bike quite quickly considering many of the parts were coming in from Spain. I am always team support your local bike shop, but I am specifically team support Papa Wheelies as your lbs, because they truly care. Yes, you can order a bike online direct from manufacturers, but nothing beats the experience of going in and working with the people at Papa Wheelies to figure out what bike works for you and making adjustments to that bike or getting a bike fit to make sure that it is the best possible machine you can ride. It's an investment and Papa Wheelies makes that process 100 times easier. Lastly, I'll add that bikes can be expensive. Tax on expensive things can be expensive. New Hampshire doesn't have taxes. Are you doing the math with me? If you are buying a bike for several thousand dollars in other New England states, you can end up paying several hundred dollars in taxes. You can avoid that by heading on up to beautiful tax free New Hampshire and buying your bike at Papa Wheelies.

They size them and have a test lot out back to ensure comfort and fit for their needs. Their pricing is probably higher or on par with other spots, but it's the price you pay for the level of focused customer service. With that said, a few notes to be aware of: - they do not carry Trek (space limitations) - it will take time. I figured we'd be in and out, but it's a smaller space so it takes a bit of patience to maneuver within - budget an hour or so if you have a confident rider and know what you want, more if tentative - the folks all seemed like they were working their darnedest to keep everyone happy and taken care of - you don't get that every where nowadays. There were 2-3 families each time we dropped by, so it's a hidden local gem. Help keep our communities local and visit spots like this instead of the big box retailers.

But they completely messed up shipping my bike to California for a long distance trip (I gave specific directions for the date it needed to arrive - they let my bike sit in the shop for three days and then shipped it the slowest possible way - it did NOT ARRIVE IN TIME FOR MY TRIP!!) They took NO responsibility for any of this. Sometimes they act as if you count for nothing if you are not a "serious" cyclist. I've been ignored, demeaned, talked down to, walked away from. You never know what you are going to get!
