It's difficult to suggest they are competitive when their stock is limited to empty slots for what might be competitively priced items and large selection of higher priced items. As Angela pointed out, the staff isn't particularly proactive about finding out when items will be re-stocked or helping a potential customer find what they need. I cannot remember how many times I've walked in here only to walk out empty handed because I could not find what I was looking for and there was little or no help from staff. If the savings (extra gas and time vs price tag of items) is worth it for me to head to a big box store, off I'll go. Latest example for me was stopping this past weekend to find a new faucet for a bathroom sink. There were only one or two brands available at this T&C location, and nothing on the shelf under $40. That's not to say there wasn't something priced under $40, it just wasn't in stock. Off to the Big Blue Borg box store I went and found exactly what I was looking for, for about $25. That's more than enough of a difference for me to shop at the big box stores. For small items, T&C isn't a bad place to stop, for specific home projects that might end up in a higher price range - it might be wise to do some www research before stopping in.

The sample was thin, clumpy and just of poor quality. Being an inexperienced painter in the digital age, I turned to online reviews for recommendations for high quality paint. Enter Reckless Paint, one of the only Benjamin Moore paint suppliers in the Durham/Chapel Hill area. If you're looking for an old-school, friendly paint shop, this is the place to go. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. The owner helped me decide which type of paint I needed, matched the color perfectly to the sample I'd loved and made sure that I purchased the right amount of paint. They did mistakenly make an eggshell instead of a matte finish. I wasn't picky and could have been easily convinced that eggshell was a better option. They didn't push a 'well, eggshell is superior' sale on me. Instead, they profusely apologized and gave me a 50% discount! That's customer service. I hadn't expected anything like that (and to be honest, was completely fine with the eggshell after they showed me the eggshell paint on their walls and gave me instructions on how I should use the paint). They carried multiple types of paint (I bought and loved the low VOC Devine paint...no priming and I only needed 1 coat to cover brown walls). I also saw paint supplies- rollers, brushes, drop cloths, etc and stains for wood. When the urge to change the colors of my walls strikes again, I'll definitely return to Reckless. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for quality paint and service.

After talking to -4 to 5 other building supply houses I found Rustic was more courteous, patient, cost effective and provided the followup, order status as needed. The sales person kept me posted weekly on order status and when distributor sent wrong door handles it was corrected quickly. Even the delivery was great and the TWO man crew placed the two sets in my garage. Well worth the 40 mile trip to purchase from them. Plus it's got that long gone old hardware type of store feeling that is missing. I won't even look at the other supply yards in Raleigh for material anymore.
