This is probably my new go to spot for Thai food. Ordered for delivery and chose extra spicy. It has spice. Great flavor. Massive portions for the cost. Checks all the boxes. Pad Thai specifically isn't too sweet or too sour. Great balance and it has the spicyness. Not overly sauced, not dry. Just really good IMO. I haven't even tried the curry yet. The owner is always friendly and welcoming, and the food is consistently great. Everything comes out fast, which makes it perfect for a lunch break. I can be in and out without feeling rushed. I can't believe I've never reviewed this place. I come here often since it's right down the street from my office. I always order ahead and pick it up. I think I've eaten in one or two times. My favorite spot! Always order crab fried rice for the kids (non-spicy). Laos papaya salad (spicy) with more lime (I like mines spicy and sour). I went to this restaurant with my daughter and grandchildren. It was an exceptional experience. The 2 little girls were treated like family and the food was excellent. This is another staple near the Fruitvale district of Oakland, right on the busy International Blvd corridor. They just opened for dining in but just a few tables. We took ours to go. Parking is always tough but we managed to find something around the corner for a quick hop in to pickup and go. We got the string beans (with seafood) lunch special which includes rice. And the red curry with fish lunch special. Both were very good. But best were the prices -- regular entrees are only about $10 and with fish/seafood they're $12! Wow where can you still find that around the East Bay?! People are always friendly here and food is quick and good. Always a win! read more

Yum! I'm a huge fan of Thai food and Sticky Rice Cafe is great! I've been a few times over the past few years and ordered takeout this time. The chicken Pad Thai is good and I Love their som tam, green papaya salad. They've updated it! It now comes with sticky rice and two fried chicken wings. We also ordered Tom ka soup and duck panang curry. Admittedly, I am not an expert on either of these dishes, but both were decadent! I was delightedly surprised at how creamy and rich both were. The curry comes with rice, we chose the famous and wonderful sticky rice and were not disappointed. Tip: they only use Postmates for delivery. Parking is nearly impossible to find, so try parking a block or two away and walk over. read more

Dear Sticky. I admit it. I had a hard time giving you a review. It was selfish. I am just afraid too many people will discover your goodness and then it'll get busier, prices will rise and then some of the charm of being a delicious hole in the wall would be lost. But gotta share the love because I gotta root for all the small businesses. What would life be with only big chain restaurants! What a nightmarish thought! But anyhow what I love is your food is not only good but the quantity is good, the price is good, you cook it quickly and prepare it well. My absolute go to? - Kaow Soi - Because this soup is delicious. Love the flavors. - Chicken Noodle Soup - I would never order this for myself... but its perfect for my toddlers. And actually the broth is quite good. Other things I enjoyed? - Lemongrass Chicken - Spicy Eggplant - Crispy Cat Fish - I really wish I can try this straight out of the kitchen rather than after bringing it home. I've also tried Moo Yang, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew. They are all pretty standard things I mainly order to make sure there is something kids can eat :) Anyhow you are one of those options for take-out that I always consider if we are going to go that route. Pad Kee Mau with tofu and veggies, Spicy Eggplant with tofu and veggies, and sticky rice. Sticky rice is well cooked, not mushy, the perfect chew! Choice of spice level and meat/seafood to add for a few bucks each - got both medium spicy without meat so we can share. A says it's his new favorite Chicken Wing, said it's crispy with meat falling off the bone. Serving sizes are as huge as at some places but 2 dishes, sticky rice and an appetizer is plenty for two for dinners plus a little leftover for a light lunch. A big plus that it's open later than many others on Sunday. Def going to come back and try more dishes. Had leftovers for lunch and the sticky rice had not congealed into concrete. :) read more

This place is easy to walk by, and appears rather hole in the wall, but we were craving spicy Thai on a weeknight & walked in. The 3 of us were the only patrons dining in, but there seemed to be a steady stream of takeout orders. We ordered the Tom Kha soup with veggies, chicken satay, a veg pad Thai, drunken noodles with beef and shrimp Panang curry (came with white rice) with a spice level of "high". All the dishes were flavorful, and hit the spot for out spicy Thai food craving. The Tom Kha soup was generous with the amount & variety of vegetables that it had and the flavor profile was a great blend of sour & spicy. The chicken satay was succulent and served with a thick peanut sauce that added the extra pep to the dish. The service was quick & attentive with regular water refills despite having only one person to manage the front of the cafe. I can see why this is a popular takeout place, the food is awesome and portions are generous. We ended with leftovers that we enjoyed the next day too! There isn't much room for too many guests at once, so I think I'll try a takeout next time, but I will be back!! read more

This place is the real deal! If you cannot handle spice, be sure to ask for it super mild and not just mild by Thai or Lao standards. That said, we ordered a coconut which we ate the meat as our appetizer and to cool my sister's mouth as we devoured the chicken larb... it was juicy, complex and just the right spice for me. I come here often and keep forgetting to write a review. The name khao and Drunken Noodles are my regular favorites, but I have tried other dishes that were also good. Sticky Rice Cafe has an unassuming exterior and perhaps an even less impressive interior, but maybe these are all the tell tale signs of a legit hole in the wall spot :) We went on a weeknight and we were the only people dining in, but they had a steady stream of people who were either picking up food to delivery or picking up take out. We ended up getting a bunch of apps and because portions are pretty generous, we still had leftovers! Got the Lao sausage (beware- it's a little spicy!), the crispy rice ball, the fresh roll, and the chicken satay. Food is pretty solid and I will definitely be coming back. That said, I wasn't wowed by anything but I'm thinking I need to order different dishes to get the true sticky rice experience. The fresh roll was perhaps my least favorite. The skin of the roll was a little thick and parts of it were kind of dry if that makes sense. The crispy rice ball dish is something we like to try at all Laotian restaurants. So far we have tried this dish at champa garden and chai Thai. I think the crispy rice ball dish here is about the same as chai Thai. The chicken satay is also solid and perhaps the show stealer was the Lao sausage. It has a bit of a kick but if you wrap it in plenty of cabbage with ginger, you could handle it (coming from someone who can't handle spiciness). I'm always on the hunt for mango sticky rice and pad see ew, and Sticky Rice Cafe nails both of these dishes. I ordered these two dishes for take out during my lunch break and thoroughly enjoyed both. The portion for the pad see ew was big enough to make 2 meals for me. A common problem I have when ordering pad see ew for take out is that the noodles tend to clump together when it's cold and no method of reheating can fix it. But this pad see ew survived my drive back home and was still soft after a few hours. The sticky rice is so creamy and fragrant with the coconut milk. I like that they give you extra coconut milk to add so you can somewhat control the sweetness level. read more

1/10/23 This was a #DoorDash order, so I'm only comparing it to other take-outs I have had... and it's pretty good in that regard. One thing that definitely stands out, take-out or not, is that I don't think I've ever had food with such insanely strong lemongrass flavor. So, if you're a fan of that, this is it. Probably potentially bannable amounts... dosages so high that if your doctor knew, you'd probably be sealed in a box to be sent to scientists to study, to see the effects of insane lemongrass on a human's physiology.... 1. Yellow Curry $15 "steamed rice, mild, beef": Yeah, like I said, the lemongrass is so strong that it mutates into something else... something FUNKY. I don't even know how to describe that odd taste here. But anyway, it's strong Thai curry, as strong as you'll ever have. Slightly spicy (I guess my gf ordered it "mild" for our kid). The beef was okay for being boiled. 8/10 2. Pad See Ew $15 "pork, medium": For a take-out version, I think this was pretty good. The noodles were mostly whole, and not too broken. I mean, I've had fresh meals served at the table at restaurants with lower quality, totally broken, wide rice noodles. They have some powdery substance on top, which I assume to be some mixture with finely ground pepper. The pork was decently tender. Not bad. 8/10 3. Northern Thai Sausage Or "Sai Ua" $13: This one is kinda interested--never had it before. The sausage is thick, European style. Typically Asian sausages are skinny, cuz you know, that's how Asians are I guess? I'd say this sausage is somewhere between Chinese sweet sausage and Italian sausage, in both texture, size, and flavor. It was cool, but I guess for Western tastes, a bit overcooked and dry. There's definitely no juice leaking out of this. There's raw vegetables of various types, and I guess I always have this problem at Vietnamese and Thai restaurants when they serve dishes this way--like how do you eat this stuff??? There was only 2 large lettuce leafs, so I don't think they intend for you to wrap the sausages in them cuz there aren't enough. I dunno. It was dinner time but there was no one in the restaurant, though has a few people coming in to pick up for takeout orders. Decided to give it a try anyways. The waiter was very friendly and after taking our orders, the food was served in a reasonable time beginning with the salad and then our entrees. Food: 1) Crispy rice ball salad - I would say that this is on par with Chai Thai in Hayward that I like a lot. They provided a very generous portion and it wasn't oily or chuncky which I have had at other places and disliked those a lot. It was flavorful and when you add the lime, it adds complimenting flavor to it. 2) Kaow Soi with beef - their Kaow Soi is creamier than what I expect it to be and didn't had the same spice blend that I like when I had them in Thailand. However, it was still delicious and wouldn't mind having it again. 3) Pra ram with chicken - their's had a mix of mild chilli sauce with their peanut sauce. Overall I didn't like it as much as I like Pra ram that is straight up just peanut sauce. Their chicken was juice and tender, though the steamed vegetables were on the cold end which I found it strange when it is a hot dish. Small cafe, neat and clean inside. Prices are low, portions are big, and service is very sweet and attentive. The layout of the restaurant felt a bit cramped to me - seating is in the front (I wouldn't come with a group of more than 4) but to get to the bathroom in the back you have to walk through a pretty narrow opening by the kitchen. I have very limited experience with Lao cuisine but would definitely return here. Here's what we tried (from most to least liked, though everything was good): -Lao sausage ($9.25) - really good! Very rich and flavorful pork sausage made with lemongrass, ginger, kaffir lime leaf, and other herbs. It seemed expensive for an app at first but the portion is generous. -Duck curry ($12.75) - good. Pretty coconutty and a little on the sweet side for me (it contains pineapple); I didn't get much curry flavor but still liked it. -Kao peak ($12.25) - chicken soup with rice flour noodles. After finally telling myself for years that I would try this place out, I took the short walk around the corner from my grandma's house to get to Sticky Rice (and it would actually be a nice walk if it weren't for the endless parade of prostitutes and the occasional pimp on the corner of 28th and International). There was no wait and no one else dining when I dropped in. Service was a little chilly but polite. I ordered the calamari ($8) and fried egg roll ($7) to start, the green curry ($11.50, which included chicken as the protein of choice and jasmine rice on the side), and the fried bananas and coconut ice cream ($6) and coconut ice cream and sticky rice ($6) for dessert. Unfortunately they were out of the banana pound cake. My brother got the Pik Pao with chicken ($9) and my boyfriend got the Tom Kha with chicken ($9). The fried egg roll came out hot and crispy and was tasty, but the calamari was flat out not good. The oceanic fish flavor was really strong and very unpleasant. The green curry was a polar opposite experience and was quite good, great flavor, not to mention a very generous serving, but there wasn't much chicken compared to how many veggies were in a serving. My brother and boyfriend were pretty lukewarm on their dishes; I tried the Pik Pao and thought it was good, just a pretty standard chicken stir fry, but I didn't try the Tom Kha, which my boyfriend said wasn't very flavorful and was pretty bland. The desserts are where Sticky Rice shine. The coconut ice cream alone was so, so good, incredibly refreshing, and a big scoop. I still think about that ice cream and keep meaning to go back for more. The fried bananas were cooked perfectly, not at all oily, and went well with the ice cream. The sticky rice wasn't overly sweet and was just delicious. I'd go back for the desserts without question, but not so sure I'd go back for a full meal. I just wasn't super impressed with the rest of the dishes (and certainly not that calamari).
