I've intended to check out WaWa Thai for some time now, whenever I stop in at the Food Mill (which is right next door). Finally, my son and I met for lunch here and am I ever glad we did. First of all, the restaurant itself might look like a hole in the wall from the outside, but, don't be fooled! Stepping inside, I found a bright and cheery (about 5 table?) dining room with a small additional alcove room where a couple of tables were filled with ladies who lunch. The hostess/wait person was so friendly and welcoming, bringing us a nice cold bottle of water right away. Then, the menu. We went with the lunch specials. II ordered the classic pad Thai with shrimp. The shrimp (about 4) were plump and not overcooked, the rest of the items that we all know from a traditional pad Thai were all fresh, the plate well composed. A real winner. The special included a side so we both had the Tom Kha with chicken. It did not disappoint, what with a savory coconut broth, and red onion balanced off the mushrooms, lemon grass, galangal. The chicken was generously portioned. My son had the pad se ew with pork belly. This dish also was a standout, with crispy edged pork belly and tender meat being the star of the show. The flat noodles also had a nice chewy, neither underdone nor overdone but just right. It was laced with a soy sauce and some sweetness running in the background. We also had a crisp salad with a balanced dressing (sweet and sour tasting). All for $15.99 (that's the base price, shrimp and pork belly are extra). We will definitely go back to try the curries. The drunken noodles and the roti also beckon. read more

I ordered broken rice salad, papaya salad, boat noddle soup & vegetable soup. I ordered Togo, and they were so nice to include complimentary drinks. I love supporting small businesses. I was lucky to find parking one block away. I shared with a few friends at home, and we loved everything we ate. The broken rice had sausage which was a nice surprise. I love my boat noodle soup, perfect balance of rich flavors and not spicy. Papaya salad was suppose to be mild, but it tastes spicier than that. I also enjoyed the Thai tea, was not too much milk. Big fan of the happy hour during the week here! Would recommend popping in for that if you want to try their food in a smaller portion and get an idea of what you might like. Thai food has been hit or miss for me. This place hits, and in a unique way. Touting a mostly Northern Thai menu, the options are all mysteries (to me) to unravel. I was accompanied by two other game food lovers to see what the food it about, and that is that it is delicious and uncomplicated. It was so appetizing that in this case, I was only really able to take a picture of my dish (we also starved ourselves as a way to pregame). The decor is lined with hand drawn and painted depictions of the dishes you can find there. The interior is quaint and outdoor seating is seemingly available in the back. The only problem was they forgot noodles for my friends dish, but this was all forgiven due to how tantalizing the dishes were. Stopped in for an early Sunday dinner and was glad they had room for a last minute table. This place is clearly a takeout favorite because people were constantly coming in to pick up food. The staff greeted me right away and got me seated while I waited for my friends. They have a lot of inside seating and its clean. Our waiter recommended a few of his favorites, and honestly, he did not miss. The chicken curry puffs and the sizzling basil rice were standouts. It was my first time trying them, and now I'm hooked. Wawa Thai is an assuming neighborhood Thai restaurant with a colorful interior and a chef-driven menu of Northern Thai dishes. We started with the Laos-style Papaya Salad, a salty, spicy, pungent combination of shredded papaya, carrots, tomatoes, green beans, and Thai eggplant mixed with a chili garlic lime dressing and salted crab. From the specials menu, the Khao Soi was a noodle soup made of egg noodles in a creamy coconut curry broth, topped with crispy fried noodles, red onions, lime, and pickled mustard greens, served with a choice of protein (I got the tender boneless chicken thigh). Next, the Fried Chicken and Roti was a huge piece of fried chicken served on top of a thick, flaky, layered roti, along with a fried egg, yellow curry sauce, and cucumber salad. The most comical part of the dish was the fried chicken, which looked impressive, but was composed almost entirely of crunchy batter surrounding a thin layer of meat in the middle. Not sure whether I was disappointed or amused. The Grilled Coconut Salmon was a salmon fillet marinated in coconut milk, lemongrass, onion, curry paste, kaffir lime leaf, and basil, then wrapped and grilled in a banana leaf. The flavorful, aromatic, tender salmon was served with jasmine rice, steamed vegetables, and a strong chili garlic sauce on the side. Finally, the dish I was most excited about trying was the Khan Toke, a huge platter with a ton of different items for sharing. The vegan version came with hung lay curry with vegan meatballs, jackfruit salad (my favorite component), tofu stir-fried with pineapple, nam prik noom (green chili dip), deep-fried puffs filled with curry potato, puffs filled with taro paste, fried tofu, fried tofu skin, fried vegan meat, mixed vegetables with coconut milk (including greens, eggplant, pumpkin), and sticky rice. While the platter definitely looked colorful and impressive, most of the items were disappointingly bland or mediocre in flavor. I like the service here at this restaurant. They were very polite and understanding. I had a Thai iced tea which was fine. For the main entree I had the Pad see ew. I didn't have a protein which would have cost extra. I was on a soft food diet due to a recent dental procedure. For the first time, I had the mango sticky rice. It was delicious. I'll have to order it again sometime. I also had some pineapple fried rice, which was also tasty. I like the fact that the prices were a little lower than other Thai restaurants I've been to. I'm always welcome to that. This restaurant is worth returning to. I would've never known that a restaurant would be in this location. read more

Dine in is also great- new spot , well taken care of. Smooth and colorful ambiance. I got takeout on Sunday afternoon. Roti dip with yellow curry: the roti itself, as you might expect, is pretty oily. The curry is very tasty and well-spiced. I would definitely want to have more of their curries in the future. Khao soi, tofu, default spice level: It was well-spiced but not spicy at all, I could handle it fine as someone who can only handle a mild level of spiciness. I liked the crispy noodles, and the tofu cubes are large and very firm. There's another fried pastry-like thing (I believe it was the bean curd), I'm not sure I liked that was much texture wise as it was hard to chew through. The sauce/soup was quite flavorful though. Overall I thought the food was quite good, will definitely make note of this and it's now among my favorite Thai restaurants in Oakland. read more

Cute Thai restaurant in East Oakland's Fruitvale District that has a small parking lot. I went to Jr high nearby and don't recall what was in this spot 40 years ago,... a laundromat? Mom and pop grocery store? Just no idea what was in this multi- room location. Well, it's been a small family Thai Restaurant since pre-pandemic per the nice Waitress. The place has metal bars on the windows, a sign of what you need to do in Oakland to protect your assets. Sad but necessary. We sat in the middle room on a very quiet weekday, no one else in the whole restaurant We heard take-out orders throughout our dinner but no other on-site diners. The Waitress says weekends are Waitlist days...glad to hear that and glad that they do enough take-out to survive. Ordered: - Roti with Yellow Curry Coconut dipping sauce, you have three sauces to choose from and we chose the traditional yellow. Sauce was good while the Roti was dense and flat and chewy. Not a fluffy crispy version that we're used to. I'd pass on this unless you like a dense Roti... it was more like an onion pancake without the onions. - Tom Kha Gai aka Coconut Curry Lemongrass Chicken Soup, the soup had lots of chicken and was spot on for taste while the bowl of soup was small. The portion serves four with no seconds. - Pad Thai with Chicken, a good version of Thailand's signature dish. - Pineapple Duck Curry, a very good version with crispy duck bathing in a rich red curry sauce, comes with a bowl of rice - Basil Eggplant with Pork which was spot on in flavor and portion size. Also comes with a scoop of rice. - Mango Sticky Rice, a pricy version of this universal Thai dessert. Not a standout at the current price. Overall, the restaurant is a great neighborhood restaurant, however I would not go and seek out if you're from out of the area. The entrees are fairly priced and taste spot on while the appetizer of Roti was lackluster and the soup was small. The one big turnoff was the staff cleaning up with a bleachy mop a half-hour before closing. We were about to finish our plates and just ordered the Mango Sticky Rice when they started cleaning. This was a big no-no for us as the smell was so disturbing to our meal and last dessert dish. Suggestion.... Don't walk thru with a mop with bleach while diners are still dining. read more

Stopped by Wawa Thai Food for a weekday lunch with friends and it was a good experience. The location seems fairly convenient and easy to locate after exiting I-580. Street parking was available and easy to find, but it could be less available on weekends. The restaurant is decorated nicely with bright colors and touches of vivid decorations. The menu seemed to have a lot of different options, and most items ranged from $15-25 depending on what meat/protein you choose. We opted to order from the lunch specials list, which offer a good amount of options and cost $14.99+. For the lunch specials, you get to choose a small plate (such as soup or egg rolls & etc) along with an entree and a side (rice/salad). We all thought the lunch specials were a good value and offered a number of options. I ordered the tom yum soup, thai fried rice with chicken and a salad on the side. The tom yum soup was quite tasty but a little too spicy, so I couldn't finish the whole portion. The thai fried rice was flavorful and I enjoyed it, although the chicken pieces were a bit bland. The side salad was good, with a mix of lettuce, cucumber, carrots and red onions and a tangy dressing. The only possible downside is the seating area was slightly cramped and stuffy. Luckily, we went at a less busy time, but I could see it being more uncomfortable during a busy timeframe. However, customer service was pretty good and attentive, despite it seeming like the restaurant was understaffed. In addition, I ordered the roti with yellow curry to-go along with another lunch special, and I believe both items were great. Overall, I enjoyed the food and ambiance at Wawa. The ambiance is nice and cute, the server was very nice, but the food was not what I expected. I got the shrimp rolls which were good. But the Khao Soi was not good. Picture is deceiving. I usually like Thai curry, but I did not like this one. I barely ate any of it. I told the server I didn't like it and she asked if I wanted a box to go. I was hoping she would have offered me to order something else instead but no. To me that's not good customer service. Their lunch special is such a steal!!! You get one small plate + one entree + salad or rice, all for under $20 which is honestly hard to beat! It's only available M-F from 12-3pm so it's perfect for a work lunch. The restaurant is really cute super clean and nicely designed and the service was amazing everyone was so friendly and attentive. Parking can be a little tough since it's mostly street parking but it's worth it for the value food and overall vibe. read more

I came here alone on an early Saturday dinner, and I was amazed by the interior decoration! I had to move tables, but was offered a complementary drink in exchange for a drink, which was a young coconut! It was amazing and refreshing. The spring rolls weren't the most impressive, but it's definitely crispy. The beef combo noodle soup - a good amount of beef and green veggies, noodles were on the modest end, but the broth flavor was very flavorful and rich. Went to this neighborhood resto with a few friends back in January. The decor was so colorful and the staff were super warm and friendly! We had a variety of dishes that were all excellent and I kept wondering why I hadn't heard of this place before. I came by here because I read an article and heard about this spot. I was in the area and came in to order, mainly because they were the only ones open at this time. However, when I went in, I made my order and I asked for medium spicy. The woman asked if medium spicy was something that I had ordered from them before and I explained that I hadn't, but when I go to other places, I get medium spicy. She said that she was concerned that I would order and get home and it would be too hot. I absolutely understand what she had to say. However, I have a thing about people telling me what I should and should not order. So consider the fact they were empty and I was one of two people in there to get food my expectation was that I would've been served. I am Caribbean and we eat hot food.. My husband is Mexican and he eats hot food. I don't know how spicy their medium is, however, I'm pretty sure we would've figured out what to do with the food. While in Oakland with a friend, we were looking for a new spot to try for lunch. We came across Wawa Thai Food while doing a Google search. I'm happy we did. They have very reasonable lunch plates and this spot it decorated SUPER cute! All the walls are Instagramable. The ladies who served us were incredibly sweet and attentive. They were more than happy to answer any questions we had about the food and drinks. I got the basil eggplant with chicken in a lunch special. This came with rice and a small side of salad and something pickled. I'm not sure what it was, but I ate it all. I can't wait for the next chance to try something new from this restaurant.
