    Eggplant stir fry

Charming spot with delicious dishes. We had the satay to start and both the chicken and peanut sauce were tasty. Next came the barbarian soup - spicy and delicious. We also had green shrimp curry and my favorite - stir fried eggplant with red peppers and mushrooms. Everything except the satay was quite spicy, the way I like it. Service was lovely. I would definitely come again. It's like a little hidden discovery.

Old Weang Ping is such a gem. From the outside it's so unassuming but when you walk in it's a little jungle oasis. Plants (real and fake) all over and the sound of waterfalls surround you. Now the important part - FOOOOOD. SOFA KING GOOD. Pat, the owner, server, cashier, and his wife the chef are a dream team. Pretty sure she could make a piece of cardboard taste gourmet. We don't even look at the menu most of the time. We just trust Pat to bring us something delicious. Tonight my husband aka BIG HUNGRY had eggplant chicken and I had trout with smoky chili sauce. Big Hungry hoovered his plate before I could try. The fish was cooked so perfectly. The meat just fell right off the bones. If there weren't any other people dining there I swear I would have straight up licked that plate clean. It's always a good time at Pat's Old Weang Ping Village :)

I've been eating here for the last 36 years and I've seen it go through lots of changes as the owner gets ready for retirement. Originally owned and operated by Patrick and his wife, they've had different people come in over the years so they can take a break. Ergo, the folks who ran the restaurant for a while and then moved to the more lucrative Alameda market. I think the current 2026 version of Weang Ping does very well. 5 of us came in for a birthday celebration: fried tofu and pot stickers for appetizers; 2 specials (duck with holy basil and salmon with pumpkin), an eggplant dish with pork and drunken noodles with chicken. All delicious with different flavors although one person in our group thought there was too much similarity between the sauce on 2 dishes. We ate in house so I don't know how these dishes would translate for takeout. Both the pot stickers and fried tofu were piping hot and crispy. Don't know how long that would last. Someone in a review remarked about oiliness. No evidence of that in our meal. Whether it's because the kitchen got in the groove, bad day or takeout effect don't know. Weang Ping still rules in my world. I couldn't take the photos fast enough before the food started disappearing so not representative of portions

10/10- Will always recommend. The food is beyond delicious. The atmosphere and setting are cozy and inviting. But the one thing that stood out above all else was that the service was genuine and kind. Cash only.

back here a year or two later and why is this spot not packed? i feel like the prices are even lower now and the couple were just sitting talking and we arrived and told them we just had $54 cash because it's cash only now and the nice man went come on in, that's more than enough and it is! look at these menu prices, in this economy, in the bay area! we need to show more support and it's easy cause the food is amazing, the place is so cool and has a jungle vibe, and you'll enjoy it with anyone.

Delicious and wonderfully odd visuals. We did not have drinks, but all the food was excellent except the boring Pad Thai.

Ask the Community - Old Weang Ping Village

Where did the old owners go?

Do you still sell spicy basil fried rice with fried chicken on top?

Is this establishment open for business? I keep calling the number listed to order take out and no one is picking up?

Heard they changed ownership and the menu looks a little different. Anyone know if it's still the same recipes? Is the food the same?

We all split all the specialty cocktails and I got the Khao Pad Kang Kiew (rice with eggplant and chicken topped with a fried egg). Dishes are $20-23 ish each. We were seated at the 6 person table in the back of the restaurant near the bathroom. My favorite drinks were their take on a hard thai iced tea, the lavender mojito, a take on an espresso martini. There was also this spicy drink that had thai chilis in it that is VERY spicy lol. Pros: - the rice dish was DELICIOUS and also huge haha. Came with cucumbers to cut the peppery flavor if needed. - All the cocktails were pretty different and it was fun to try all of them. They were all beautiful to look at and tasty (lots of coconut and Thai inspiration). - Service was pretty good - Has "typical" thai dishes like pad thai and pad see ew, and also more rare ones that are hard to find - Close to many bars and other establishments, so perfect if you want to eat here as a first, second, or third location of your outing haha Cons: - The air flow in the back wasn't amazing so I did feel like it got stuffy/hot - Parking can be tough in this area so I recommend BARTing Another reason to love Oakland!

Unfortunately it was too spicy for my liking and some of the white rice was burnt from the being at the bottom of the pot. There was only 8 eggplant pieces in the entire dish and surprisingly a lot more chicken. So depending on your preference this may be a good thing! I was really craving the sweet, earthy flavor of eggplant so while lots of protein was greatly appreciated I did wish there was more eggplant in the dish. Either way it was a good portion of food so they don't skimp here for sure! The service was friendly and super attentive the moment you walk in. I'd be willing to try another non spicy dish here.

The staff is consistently so kind and welcoming, which makes the experience even better every time. Truly, there isn't a single bad item on the menu. They do an amazing job offering more unique Laotian dishes alongside classic Thai favorites. Some personal standouts are the kor moo yang (grilled pork jowl), grilled beef short rib, mok pa (steamed catfish), and the Lao-style papaya salad -- which is perfectly spicy and packed with flavor. Portions are generous and incredibly filling, and everything is so flavorful and delicious. Even when ordered for delivery, the food arrives fresh and holds up beautifully. Rose Garden is a total gem and I cannot recommend them enough.

But it was not full throughout the time we were at the restaurants. Experience: Food came out pretty fast and it was hot(!). Overall, service was good and they checked in on us a few times to make sure all is good. Food: - Nam Khao was fantastic. Crispy rice, the mixed minced vegetables, and the cooked sausage. Together with the lime that you can squeeze to preference, it was delicious! Haven't had Nam Khao this delicious in a while! - Pad See Ew with pork was alright. It was cooked well and a little on the sweeter side rather than savory, but missing the smoky flavor "wok hei" that would take this to the next level that I love. - Fried Sweet Fish was alright too. Fish is fried with a very thin batter but it had black pepper which my kids doesn't want as they're sensitive to anything spicy. The fish had a light fishy taste to it (fresh water fish) which would be better if they even use a little ginger to cut the fishy taste for a better taste. - Guay Tiew is very similar to Pad See Ew with the exception that it had a fried egg on the top and had seafood (shrimp and squid). - Vientiane Crispy Roll is different from regular egg rolls. Made with rice paper roll so it was crispy but also chewy, which is different and may not be what everyone is used to. Will return to try out other dishes.

I missed photos of the main entrees enjoying our time and honestly not sure what we ordered as we paid with a kiosk and didn't get a printed receipt even thought I typed in my email.. so that's frustrating with technology. If you want a receipt have it printed before you leave. My friend had a spicy eggplant dish and I had a tofu dish with rice and no fish sauce. Wish I could be more descriptive but can't say without an itemized receipt.. doesn't matter though, was all amazing flavors for both my friend (who travels and has worldly palette, and my self with a broad pallet only within the US) Flavors were amazing and service was on par. I did have an issue at first with the first server saying Pad Thai could be done with tofu and no fish sauce so I was excited, but then the next server said it was already mixed and not able to accommodate, but did find me an alternative I found flavorful with veggies, though missed having the peanuts in my dish. I had Pad See You instead without meat or fish sauce. Service overall was wonderful, attentive and didn't have to wait for anything. They did close and allowed us to stay on the patio visiting long after. Would be happy to return again.. I didn't ask about validating my parking and then they closed, so that was a bummer but my bad.. do check when you arrive and see if they can validate to help with a hefty parking cost $20 for us but hung out longer than most..

Do you like the funk?…read more Our server explained to us the Lao version is more funky and fermented, while the Thai version is more mellow. We went with the Lao version. The Thai iced coffee was delicious and strong! As it should be. It did give me the jitters though because I'm a weak sauce. We were a party of ten and I was able to make rezzies via phone for a Friday evening at 6:30pm no problem about a week beforehand. The kiddos ordered à la carte, and five of us adults had the following: - BMV ultimate papaya platter with Lao sausage, angel wings and crispy pork. Crispy pork was legit, papaya salad definitely had that extra funk. The angel wings were crispy and meaty and my friends loved the Lao sausage. One even said "it's like tom yum soup in a sausage". It was very lemongrass forward which is not my thing, but that's my problem. I feel we could have ordered à la carte and that would have been a better deal than $75 for the platter. Some of it was fluff like the cabbage, rice and pork rinds. - Khao soy soup: Fiancé thought it would be creamy and coconut-y like the Thai version but it wasn't. I did enjoy the flat noodles but they were all stuck together. - Pia pla ka pow (fish with basil): Good one. The fish was moist and flavorful. The veggies were al dente and delicious too. - Sakoo: Unique! I enjoyed the chewy mochi exterior and the savory ground pork filling. It needed a sauce. I just used the chili sauce that was on the party platter. - Laab Gai: This fell flat for me. I'm not a huge fan of organs though. - Nam khao fried rice: One of our favorites! The crispy pieces really made this dish. Would definitely order this again. - Mango sticky rice: Served warm. Very sweet mango! - Purple rice with egg custard: Also served warm. This was ok. - Side of rice: HUGE serving! Unfortunately it was clumpy and hard, which means old. Street parking only. Get the nam khao and mango sticky rice!

This is our go-to Restaurant, this year for Thanksgiving & Christmas both. Friends who joined us were impressed with the food & were very interested to know the name & location of this restaurant. Now my In-Laws like to order Take Out more often, and they always want to order Thai food! It used to be they wanted Indian food, which we love but truly had not found satisfactory in the past. I'm so glad because Thai Taste Kitchen doesn't disappoint! They have been impeccable about marking the containers & even packaging meat vs vegetarian items in separate bags, and they allow specifics like "no shrimp paste" or whatever, more of "this" or none of "that". White Rice included free with entrees thst are not noodle or rice based, and if you prefer individual instead of family style, you can add an appetizer to each entree individually for about $5-$6, which is about the same as splitting an appetizer order in half, but sometimes people prefer a different appetizer. I like to avoid fried foods, for example, but others love egg rolls or fried chicken (was that an appetizer or an entree?) Thai Iced Tea comes in one size only, and it's small, but consider the calories. This is probably best in small size & I was thoroughly satisfied, I had not indulged for many, many years and it was so delicious. If possible, get it with no ice so it doesn't melt on the way to your destination, you can add your own ice once you get there. Tbh, I started drinking it immediately & finished it in about 10 min, since my husband was driving. Treat yourselves & I think you'll be really glad you found this place. One caveat, they are short staffed so keep that in mind if you eat in the restaurant, I believe only one person is serving tables and may also handle the register, so it may require patience. The beauty of Take Out is we can set out a buffet, everyone grabs a plate & chooses ehat they like, and we can reheat warm items in the microwave in about a minute, and it tastes it's best hot.
