Buyer beware, they are charging a package if fee. I'm not upset about paying extra during these trying times but they should be up front with it. Three rolls, a general tso's, sticky balls and tot's where hot and good. We did have a compliant and the manager and staff where accommodating to make it right. Life isn't perfect but correcting a problem and making it fair for both parties is where the customer Service is at. I can't wait for COVID to go away and get back into the restaurant. read more

I went here 6 years ago and used to love my tots appetizer for my daughter with a california roll and my Godzira roll entree (im sure i just spelled that wrong ),sitting down in the booth by the window with my daughter and leaving a happy satisfied customer. Recently due to the pandemic I decided to order take out of the same two rolls mentioned above since my other sushi spot was closed. Im going to just say this, this was the most sub par sushi I have ever tasted. The Godzira tasted like they changed the cream cheese it was definitely the consistency of mayo and just ruined my previous thoughts of this place. Way over hyped, but I guess it's one of the few pan-Asian restaurants in the area. Don't come here on a Friday night with a party bigger than 2 because you will be waiting outside for an hour plus! The service is HORRENDOUS, what happened to Southern hospitality? Food is an odd mix of Asian and they serve a side of tater tots with pretty much everything. Sticky Rice is a well-regarded place to go in the Fan area. Why this is, I'm not terribly sure. Came to this area to go to a restaurant which turned out to be out of business (never wait too long to use Groupons!), so my lady friend and I settled on Sticky Rice. I had been here once before with mixed results, though I decided to give it another try. It was quite busy for the early evening, though I found out that was because it was 1/2 off sushi happy hour (cool!). We ended up waiting for a while to get seated, and our table ended up being a far corner one (still relatively comfortable though). Our server seemed nice enough, answering questions we had about the menu. It just so happened that they were doing $1 PBRs as well, so I availed myself of one of those and turned to the menu. Naturally, it being the sushi happy hour, we opted for sushi. HERE'S THE CATCH: while the monster rolls are indeed sushi, they for some reason are not considered part of the happy hour, and this fact is not noted anywhere nor did our server inform us of this. Let me tell you why this doesn't make sense: if I order 5 orders of smaller sushi or 1 big order (the monster roll), I'm getting the same amount of food, yet the server claimed "oh no, we'd be giving away too much food to do that same deal for the Monster rolls". No, actually, you wouldn't: your prices for the monster rolls don't save anything over ordering several smaller orders (no bulk discounts here), so buying a big size is the same value as buying several smaller sizes, and would result in the same discount per food volume if both were on the 1/2 off sushi happy hour. Now, it's your restaurant, run it how you want to, though at least state your exclusions to deals where I can see them so I can know what isn't included. After all this, the sushi turned out to be sub-par. It wasn't terribly flavorful and the presentation fell short of what I've experienced at most other sushi restaurants I've frequented in the past. Also, no special orders here are doable on their happy hour, so I hope you like cucumbers. Got a side order of tater tots which turned out to be good, though I doubt it's even possible for anyone to mess up tater tots. Thank god for the cheap beer. If you're local and you just want a little sushi for relatively cheap, this place will suit your needs. However, if you want to get full off of great sushi and don't mind a short drive or paying a bit more, Sushi King is a much better choice. I'm all for supporting local restaurants, though they've got to be good ones, and this one doesn't qualify, sad to say. Overall: 2.0 stars -------------- Pros: - Cheap beer makes life better ($1 PBRs on certain occasions) - Nice atmosphere, if a perpetually busy one. Cons: - Sushi just isn't that great. - To summarize their weird exclusion of monster rolls in their sushi hour, "Your math is bad and you should feel bad." - Trying to find a place to park around here is a pain and a half. I was rooting for this place. I love sushi. I had two other spots in the Richmond area that I preferred but wanted to try something new with a few sushi loving friends from work. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, right before a soccer (futbol for non-Americans) match so we beat the sports crowd that came to watch the game. Sticky Rice is located in an area of Richmond that is primarily residential with some local businesses here and there. Parking in this area can be pretty brutal depending on the time but there was a bit of lot parking available behind the building. If that doesn't work for you, start practicing your parallel skills and grab a spot on the street. Our party of four was seated promptly. There were at least three other tables filled with people there in the smallish dining room but we were served timely. A friend ordered the bucket of tots (smh...she was way too excited about those...lol) which were just a bucket of tots. If you're looking for an appetizer to share with a group of people w/o breaking the bank then maybe that's the way to go. We ordered Godzirra (love the name - crunchy shrimp, avocado, cream cheese), The Millenium Roll (crab, eel, salmon), South Roll (sweet potato) and another I can't remember the name of. They offer a variety of creative rolls and staples. I wasn't super impressed but didn't have anything that I didn't like. If you're in the area, this may not be your #1 spot to hit up for sushi, but this place is big on character and seems to provide a social scene for those looking for it. read more

What an amazing dive bar with awesome sushi! This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Richmond (and it makes the list of my top five all-time favorite sushi spots anywhere :-) Regarding the decor, this place doesn't quite meet the criteria for a hole-in-the wall, but it's pretty close. Yet, it's grungy interior adds to it's charm. On the weekends, its always packed. It's in an artsy neighborhood near VCU so there's always an interesting, eclectic crowd. You MUST TRY the bucket of tater tots served with their secret, signature sauce! Its delicious! It's a very simple starter, but for some reason I can't get enough of it. The portion is pretty large. So if you're not that hungry just order them as a side. The sushi is divine. It's so fresh and they use high quality ingredients. They make their California roll with real crab meat (not imitation meat like most other places). It tastes sooo much better. I also love their spicy tuna roll, the drawn-N-buttered roll, and the ceviche roll. I must worn you, the restroom is not the most welcoming place. It's in the basement and it smells really weird (unlike anything I've ever smelt). I try not to use it. I make sure I go before I come or I just hold it until after I leave. This inconvenience is the reason I gave them four stars instead of five. Overall, this place is wonderful. All of the sushi here is delicious. I always stop by when I'm in town. read more

I thought the food here was good but could not top Wabi Sabi's sushi. Creative but not as adventurous as I expected sushi to be in RVA. Our server was great and the venue had a hipster/grunge metal vibe. Sticky Rice is kid friendly so do not be weary of bringing the kiddos. Meals are around $10-20 and desserts are no more than $5. The sushi was fresh and veggies cooked very nicely. I would go back in a heartbeat well especially if I did not want to drive to Petersburg, VA. read more

I was recommended to go here and I did. I was not wowed but I wasn't disappointed neither. It was slam packed at about 5:30pm so we sat at the bar. They only had 2 or 3 tap lines I believe and every other beer was in a bottle. We were serviced fast and with no problem. I was also told to order sticky balls which I did and they were decent. This place was horrible. My daughter ordered oodles of noodles for her kid's meal and they gave her a ramen packet. The menu says nothing about ramen anywhere. Yet, udon and soba noodles were all over their menu. Then, I thought their coke machine was out, but the server admitted they use off-brand coke products. I also hated my sushi. Worst Sushi restaurant in RVA. They have the nerve to call themselves a sushi restaurant and they're even more pretentious with the prices. If you're charging the same prices most commercial sushi restaurants charge, you should at least have the basics down. Where Sticky Rice FAILS...terribly 1. Sushi Rice: Theirs isn't even seasoned with sugar and vinegar...it's just cooked rice with a piece raw fish on top...any "real" sushi joint will tell you "good sushi rice" is 90% of what makes good sushi. Even buffets do this better. 2. Fish Quality: Good sushi shouldn't make you feel like you have to use the bathroom 20 minutes later. Sticky Rice clearly uses as much farmed raise fish as possible. Do some research on "farmed raise salmon and tilapia" and see how bad it is for you. To add insult to injury...they charge top dollar for their garbage fish. 3. Prices: They're pulling a fast one and charging top dollar prices for "Gas Station Quality" sushi. Oh well...as long as these pretentious hipsters who patronize this place, stays away from actual good sushi places in RVA like "Samurai Sushi, or Kanpai", I'm okay with it. What they do right. 1. My fiancée and I were really looking forward to trying Sticky Rice tonight based on the ravings of college friends from VCU. For starters the location and the theme itself were nice but right from the beginning, we knew it was a place for drinking and not so much for eating. First we ordered red wine. Pinot Noir and Cabernet. This was the batch of wine that most find at the bottom of your local food market shelf. The kind which leaves a film lining the inside of your mouth and lacks general flavor overall. $8 each glass. Next, an appetizer. Deep fried and overly cooked calamari on a bed of cabbage and assorted vegetables. Again, the flavor was zapped out and the squid was dryer than an arid desert. The chili sauce was tasty but couldn't overpower the burnt breading taste stuck in the back of my mouth. Sushi was third. My spider roll was the best out of the bunch. Sticky Balls was my second choice and for a reason. Warm, slimy, and raw tuna was its primary ingredient. A perfect fit for it's name. The final slice had me gagging but the cheap wine gargled it down and did the trick. Our waitress was pleasant and timely, asked the right questions and cleared the table as needed. She deserved a great tip after dealing with the food she has to unfortunately serve all night. Overall we were simply disappointed. I don't know if we'll ever go back. Especially since the tab came out to a whopping $75, a price one would expect at a high class, soft spoken dining setting. Try it out, but don't expect much. read more

I have been here a lot since living in Richmond but Friday (5/5) was the worst experience I've ever had at this restaurant or any restaurant for that matter. A group of friends and I go in wanting a booth, all seating is full, so we head to the bar while we wait. We ordered food/drinks from the bar and then finally get our booth seating. As soon as we sit down at our booth, our hostess right from the get go is being extremely pushy and impolite. She comes back after we ordered more drinks to inform us that we need to order more food or she cannot have us sit there, we were not informed of this prior to reserving and giving up our bar seats. She tries to make it right by saying the first round of drinks was on the house (we never got them). Our friend asks for the manager after arguing with our hostess TWICE already about the current situation, only to have the hostess come back to claim that she was the manager. She plops herself down to look my friend in the eye with the biggest pseudo-smile on her face to mock us with, "I am the manager." Well, if that was the manager then she needs some serious people skills as she told us at the end, "We don't need people with bad attitudes around here." At this point, we all wanted to leave. Too bad our other friends food had taken AN HOUR, since she ordered it from the bar, to be given to us. They deliver it in a take out bag with a 10$ Sticky Rice gift card with it for the extremely long wait which does us no good because we will not be going back. After this, I am inclined to believe this establishment is not college friendly whatsoever. They treated 7 college students poorly with little to no civility, made little to no effort to accommodate us fully for lackluster service, and did their best at making sure our mood(s) for the night were ruined! read more

On the corner of a busy street and Looks more like a sports bar with Japanese decor. Our waitress bought us drinks and disappeared. On returning she didn't leave straws and disappeared again. Another woman tended to us more so than our actual waitress. The food came quickly and again it was cute. But the taste of things... the yum yum rolls tasted soggy and wet. The millennium rolls tasted nothing like a dragon roll which I asked if they had and was suggested this. My General tso shrimp wasn't anything to brag about. The only good thing was the calamari and soda. I think us going into the restaurant really made us think twice. We rather order out and pick up but I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon.
