Absolutely loved the sushi from here. Prices aren't too bad either per roll. It was not too busy for a Saturday evening. We had ordered a total of 6 rolls but only 5 showed up. I didn't bother asking for it since we did end up being full- and thankfully they didn't add it to the check either. So that's a star down - but possibly able to make it up in the future. We came here to eat pretty late around 9 and glad they were open till 10. Only one main server and one if the Sushi chefs helped serve us. We ordered a bottle of sake - Sho Chiku Bai Nigori and that was pretty good. You got a little more of that rice taste due to it being unfiltered. We ordered quite a but- the Spicy seafood soup, Beef garlic fried rice, eel and uni Sashimi. We ordered a variety of sushi - octopus and we also got a caterpillar roll. I don't recall everything we got but it was all very good and good cuts with not too much rice. I really liked the flavor of the seafood soup. It didn't have a lot of seafood, some shrimp, fish and imitation crab meat. There was some noodles and cabbage in there too. Loved the way it tasted though. We walked in and were seated immediately on a Saturday, which was great! For appetizers we had the edamame and the rock and roll shrimp. These were both delicious. I loved the presentation of the rock and roll shrimp and thought the appetizer was delicious and inventive. Our service was very good in that almost-invisible way -- my boyfriend's drink was refilled 2x and before he had to ask both times. We had several rolls together and really enjoyed all of them. Parallel parking on E Main is the closest and free option, but there is a parking lot across from Main Street Station that is paid. I'm not sure how my lunch party ended up here but we did. Almost immediately my lunch partner started to complain about the smell. I think it was a psychosomatic result after reading Dawn's review. I personally didn't think the place smelled bad. Then again my nose in autumn doesn't work very well. I have yet to TRULY find a Japanese restaurant to frequent for my Japanese cravings, but at least I've tried a couple more Japanese places now. Sumo-San on Main St. is within walking distance from my apartment, so I was bound to try it eventually. At one point during my dinner, it started pouring outside; fortunately, I stayed dry indoors while I enjoyed my food! We ended up sitting at the "sushi bar," although in my opinion, it was more like a bar counter you would find in a bar establishment than an authentic sushi bar (after all, we didn't order sushi directly from the sushi chef, and the sushi chef didn't once acknowledge us). Our waitress was nice, but a little slow in bringing our menus and serving us in general. My friend really liked Sumo-San's cute decor, but for me, I'm partial toward more traditional Japanese decorations. The place kind of had a East-meets-West fusion atmosphere; it was far too dark and flashy to be what I think of as a Japanese restaurant. Granted, I realize that Sumo-San is not trying to be authentic; I just really miss the kinds of places I go to in California. =\ The two of us shared three cut rolls (Caterpillar, Hot Night, and fried sweet potato) and an appetizer (Rock 'N Roll Shrimp Guacamole & Chips). I was not very impressed by the sushi at all. Not only were the rolls rather small (in diameter), but the rice on the outside was overly smushed. The minimal amount of unagi in the Caterpillar roll was disappointing. The one redeeming quality was the appetizer. That wasabi guacamole was genius! The shrimp tempura was delicious with guac (I never would have thought to pair the two), and the chips were extra crisp without being too thick and hard. The first thing I noticed when I walked in is that this place has a lot of charm. Clocks on the wall telling time from different cities across the world and a sushi bar positioned just the way I prefer it, which is where I sat. The edamame was good....I mean, hard to mess that up. I don't give 2 star reviews that often, so this hurts! Just so you know, we came on First Friday, place wasn't packed, but a good amount of folks in there. Even though I like the location of the restaurant, the service and the atmosphere of the restaurant. I was mostly bummed out by the sushi. This place is in Shockoe Bottom, and there's a sushi place apparently right across the street. (Boyfriend tells me that once we are in the restaurant and since he was at Sumo San the weekend prior, I thought it'd be a good option.) It's a small little place, easy to walk past it if you're not use to the area. The decor is homey, I think that's the best descriptor of it, just random little knick knacks everywhere. A lovely origami paper crane chandler(?) by the bar area. We ordered drinks: Boyfriend got the Sapphire Martini ($8), very gingery, not all that sweet. I got the Pamatini ($8), citrus flavors, a light sour taste, pretty decent. I finished my drink before his so I'm going to say that I enjoyed it at the time. We ordered an appetizer: Soft Shell in River Stone ($7.95), I never had soft shell crab until this dish. So I'm probably the worst person to critique it. However it tasted grainy, the boyfriend stated that's how soft shell crab is due to the shell. Which makes sense, but the natural flavors of the dish tasted off to me. You have to use the sauce they give you to kinda mask it. Onto the Sushi: Salmon Hand Roll ($4) Decent, I only took one bite because it was just one for the boyfriend. But the salmon (and all the sushi we had this night) had this taste that reminded me of supermarket sushi? Ouch. Rainbow Roll ($9.50), Crunchy Shrimp Roll ($9.95) and Whitefish Roll (forgot the price of this one!), had this taste that I had to mask with either the drizzle, soy sauce or roe that was on the sushi. It wasn't the same sushi that I had in May when I was in NYC, that tasted fresh, the flavors worked so well with each other... This didn't taste fresh, or the sushi wasn't seasoned properly. Niku Roll ($8.95) was the boyfriends decision to end our night at this place. this is probably the most AMERICAN sushi I've ever had. The steak in the sushi wasn't tender enough, it was tough and didn't mesh well with the asparagus and rice. PASS. Maybe that sushi place across the street is better? I'll find out soon enough. I say pass on this sushi joint. Maybe it was just a bad night, but first impressions mean a lot. And I'm sure there's somewhere else that can do sushi better. read more

I have been coming to Sumo San for years. While I don't get here very often at all, the food I get is always consistent. I got hooked on their Garlic Fried Rice on my very first visit, and now it's a must that I get this when I come. I opted to add chicken (you can chose beef, tofu, or shrimp as well) to it, and it is just so flavorful! I've had their Edamame, Miso soup, and Veggie Roll. All terrific. This past visit, I decided to try out the Veggie Tempura Roll. I actually hadn't tried any sushi deep fried, so I was excited. It definitely didn't disappoint. And the flavors were great. Some of the best sushi I've had in RVA. We stumbled in by fluke, planning on going to Miyabi across the street (they were closed) and we are so glad we did; not that it's a competition, but Sumo San trumps Miyabi by far. The service was friendly and quick, the fish was so fresh and delicious, and the size of the cuts were very generous. There is a winner in the Shockoe Bottom sushi war and I am pleased to say this was a creative, low-key strong runner up to Miyabi. The rolls here at Sumo are more creative and the smaller space is ideal for conversational dining or solo munching. Sashimi was plump and fresh. Pricing is also very similar to Miyabi though Sumo San has decent happy hour specials and a boozy Saketini that on its own merits a repeat visit. The weak link? The miso soup. Cold weather sushi eating requires good hot soup (or hot sake) and Miyabi has them beat there. Plus I didn't find a roll or appetizer that stood out to be my favorite yet at Sumo San. Ordered what I thought were salmon rolls but the salmon was wrapped inside a small roll of rice and seaweed, I felt like I was eating miniature samples of a sushi roll. Fish didn't taste fresh but it was also such a small piece inside the roll that flavor was completely masked and it was hard to tell I was even eating salmon. I've also had their tonkatsu pork though which was okay, not the best I've had but at least it wasn't dry and it wasn't all just fry. I could taste the pork so that was a plus. I ordered this during happy hour and it came with a side of salad and rice which was nice. Sumo San looks unassuming from the outside, but indoors you'll find the sweetest couple and a beautiful paper crane installation. Ordering on the phone was easy and our food was ready so quickly! This was my fourth trip to Sumo San within the past month or so and I absolutely love them. Everything has been fantastic! The potstickers are delicious. They have a great selection of sushi (try the sushi happy hour specials) and other dishes. The New York roll (a California roll with shrimp tempura on top) is my favorite so far. The Garlic Fried Rice is moist and flavorful. They also have a good beer selection and lunch specials. You can pair a dish like chicken teriyaki with a sushi roll for a reasonable price. Service has been wonderful and lunch service was fast. The place is quieter for lunch but heats up more for dinner and the evening crowd. The atmosphere is fun and casual. read more

I don't know how they have such good ratings, but if you've ever had even slightly decent sushi, than you would know this is not it!! Also, their miso soup is like a watered down mix between clear soup and miso... could not emphasize the watered down aspect enough. The quality of the fish is 5 out of 10, some pieces tasting more fishy than the others, some pieces of tuna more gray than others, nothing screaming fresh, texture lacking. Im not sure if its just not authentic or they get away with very low end, mediocre sushi because there isn't any great sushi spots in the city area, I don't know but never again. Now, don't expect the fish to taste like it just came out of the ocean, but it will no doubt satisfy your craving for sushi. My favorite rolls to get are the Rainbow and Alaska Rolls. Salmon is my favorite fish in sushi so naturally I gravitated to the Alaska roll which comes with lots of salmon to go around. In contrast, the Rainbow is a beautiful roll with a variety of fish if you're feeling more adventurous. I've found that the sizes of the rolls change depending on which roll you get, but I was pleasantly full with these 2 rolls alone. Price is decent considering sushi is always a bit pricey. read more

After checking with reviews here on Yelp and the personal testimony of my sis-in-law, I jumped on this joint for my bday lunch - I LOVE all things sushi! Although the food was VERY GOOD, the service (which began rather well) severely regressed when I informed the waitress of the short black hair in my food. [I have long, curly brown hair and found this to be rather unappetizing.] She began by negating my statement and culminated with a nasty attitude, sighs, and placing things down own the table without so much as acknowledging us. There is nothing that can ruin a meal worse than a nasty attitude. While I would have definitely gotten over the hair in my food (because accidents happen, humans have hair, and humans prepared my food) I could not deal with sassiness when I'm paying for decent service with my meal. If it weren't for this incident I'd give 4 stars, easy! But I'm just warning, if you wind up with hair in your food and you've got the short girl with the short black hair, either (1) eat it and go home happy or (2) prepare for PMS meets bipolar disorder. I like the old town of Richmond but always scares me when it comes to finding a good place to eat. Yes I am not familiar with the area and run down stores & restaurants are not very promising. With my trusty Yelp app, I typed Sushi nearby and boom just like that it appeared before me. Conveniently located near the Main St train station, I walked briskly and was the first customer. Ordered miso soup, green tea and sumo attack special. I liked the quality of the green tea and its richness. Miso soup was tasty. And sushi was pretty good. California rolls were tightly packed with little bit of rice and every bite was a full flavor of cucumber and crab meat. Sushi was fresh and tasty. First bite into the salmon is usually a good indicator. I saw the customized rolls but was not able to try since it was just a party of one. My next trip will include more exploration into the mystery of Sumo San. I really liked the atmosphere and the decor. I sat alone by the window, ate a belly full, sipped on green tea of pleasure and relaxed. Friendly staff and full of female customers. Visited November 17, 2016 during Sushi Happy Hour Sumosan had great food at great prices for their Sushi Happy Hour all in a restaurant with a great ambience. I ordered salmon, tuna, unagi, salmon roe, and white tuna nigiri as well as a California roll and spicy tuna roll. The fish was really fresh and I liked that the unagi had a lot of body to the meat instead of being rubbery like the kind you get at some places. Their California roll is also a little different because they shred the imitation lobster meat instead of packing the whole stick in- it lends a unique texture that I really enjoyed Overall, the food was nothing fancy or unique but it was definitely good.
