I ordered the monster roll and it didn't taste all that fresh. It also wasn't wrapped tight enough so it fell apart every time I'd pick it up to eat it. The bathrooms are tiny and not the cleanest. I added one star because our server did correct a mistake she made on our bill pretty quickly. I wasn't expecting super authentic sushi but I did expect a better experience because this place gets some hype. I likely would find better places for sushi in the area. read more

I was craving some sushi and sticky rice is known for their sushi plus it had been so long since I've dined here so I decided to go. It was a Friday night around 7pm so they were really busy. When I walked in it did take a while for someone to acknowledge me but the staff was super friendly so they probably were just overwhelmed by how busy it was. It took about 30min to get seated and was greeted by Connie who was very kind. Connie provided water and menus. When my sister arrived, we ordered the teriyaki wings to start with ranch and blue cheese. It took a while for the wings to arrive, again, likely bc of how busy it was. When they arrived, we learned they actually didn't have blue cheese. This was frustrating bc I wouldn't have ordered them if they didn't have blue cheese since I don't prefer to eat wings without it. Connie was apologetic and ended up removing them from the tab. Then, we ordered 3 rolls: spider, crunch shrimp, and millennium rolls. The crunchy shrimp is a classic so it's a straightforward dish, good! The spider roll was delicious too, everything blended well. The millennium roll, I loved! I wanted a roll where I could get a bunch of different meats I love.. this was totally it! And, it was rolled in something different than seaweed; not sure what it was but I liked it! My sister said she couldn't taste the salmon but I honestly wasn't looking for it.. it blended well and as so good! We were definitely full by the end and enjoyed our meal! Trashy place in a dangerous part of the capitol. Felt unsafe from the minute I had to park in the pothole-rat-infested alley. Really curious how this place passes health inspections. I heard a rumor that one of the hunk bartenders had been spending "personal time" with the lonely widow health inspector. The bathroom is at the bottom of a slippery steep stairwell. Thought there were more bathrooms but I walked into the dish pit area. "CLEAN" plates were placed on the floor and the dishwasher was smoking "something" with the bartender. Popped into Sticky Rice for the first time in a while & had a great meal with a friend! We started with some yummy edamame. Then, I got the special Coast to Coast which came with a Philly Roll and a California Roll, as well as my choice of seaweed salad or miso soup. In addition to this, it came with a sweet treat of a RVA locally made cake pop which just topped everything off perfectly. I ordered food for dinner from Sticky Rice last night and although the sushi was good, the so-called lettuce wraps were extremely disappointing. Other than providing lettuce, this in no way it resembled lettuce wraps. The mixture was a shredded stir fry mixture with fairly large chunks of chicken and large shreds of vegetables. There's no way it would fit in a wrap. There was no sauce provided. I definitely would NOT order it again. Mixture should be a small dice of all ingredients and a sauce for the wrap. read more

This was our favorite place we went for food while visiting Richmond, I'm not sure why it's getting so many negative reviews. Great vegan options that my non-vegan partner also loved! The Dirty Vegan and Veganzilla rolls were delicious and very filling! It was relatively quiet when we first arrived and it felt cozy and intimate in our booth and then turned into more of a bar vibe after 10pm that attracted a younger college crowd, but still very chill and a great place to hang out. The servers didn't seem to be in any hurry for us to leave and it was a little difficult to get their attention at times as it was busy, but we were overall satisfied. The bathrooms are downstairs in the basement and not the best but were still fully functional and comparable to any typical dive bar. I've visited many times, and have never once been disappointed by the quality or portion sizes. My favorites are the Asian Sesame bowl with tofu and sticky rice, the crunchy shrimp roll, salmon rolls and sashimi, and the Drawn n' Buttered if I want to go way over the top. They also have great happy hour deals every day of the week, such as $3 drafts and half price appetizers. A tip: the time of day will greatly determine the atmosphere during your visit. If you want a casual, low-key dining experience, grab a table or spot at the bar during lunch of dinner before 8:00pm. Great place to stop for a drink and surprising great sushi. The dive bar, sushi bar concept is unique and works well. There are activities every night and we hear it turns into a party stop at night: a very chill place during the day, all of the staff is friendly and attentive. Sushi looked great & tasted great. Ribs tasted good till the bite closer to the bone--the ribs were refrigerated-cold on the inside. Insides of the ribs were soft so I hope I only bit into a precooked cold meat, & not raw meat. Calamaris were small & not that crispy; the sauce it came with was super yummy! If you are looking at their menu items that say "spicy" be prepared to be disappointed. ordered the sticky wings and the mongolian beef bowl both spicy and had to almost use 3 soy sauce packets just get to get a little bit of flavor from the Mongolian beef. After immediately being seated and given water, there was a big lag of time before we saw the poorly trained waitress. She never said her name and did little to explain their menu. They were good; pot stickers and lettuce wraps. Used to having iceberg lettuce for the wraps but the curly lettuce was interesting. Then another long wait. Meanwhile a table of two was seated next to us and was served the same time as us by the manager and not the server. After confusion between our orders, which the waitress made a brief appearance, our soba noodle salad was ok. The manager asked if we wanted a dressing and we pointed out the menu said it came with a cilantro dressing. He looked confused but brought over a half of soup bowl of some kind of dressing without cilantro in it. After eating and talking, I left my credit card out and waited for my check. 10 minutes later, I asked the manager to get our check. For such a small venue, I wasn't sure where our waitress keep going as she was MIA most of the night. Bet if I ordered the tator tots and PBR, I would have had better service with a waitress that would talk. She still had the audacity to come out and say "Did you guys really just leave me a 3 dollar tip on a 40 dollar bill??" she was VERY RUDE. Sticky Rice reminds me of The Little Engine That Could. Sushi is a tricky thing and to be really good at it... well, it takes a lot practice. Who in Richmond hasn't been to sticky rice? It's a landmark in the area. I've been here three times and the most recent time was this past Saturday (4/18/15). The crowds were big because due to the Game of Thrones Pub Crawl (which I was a part of) we got it without much fuss and ate and drank heartily. The staff are super cool and the TOTS are epic. Really, this bucket of tots gimmick is fantastic. I always have a good time and I really appreciate actual crab meat. I mean, actual crab meat, imagine that. Anyway, as much as I enjoy the place and the people the food sucks. I'm sorry but it does. It's ghetto as all hell. But does it really matter? It's more about the experience and I don't think people go here for the food but rather the good time. I don't think there is a Yelp review in the world that will cause Sticky Rice to lose business and that's a good thing. Just keep doing *you* Sticky Rice and thanks for being an RVA team player. For being a sushi spot they have amazing tater tots. But also for being a sushi spot they are real big in night life for rva. Like very hot spot. It's always crowded in there at night and I think it's a bit overrated. The restraunt itself is small and crammed and their batheroom are tiny, i spent one night out here and all I wanted to do was leave because I was claustrophobic af. I just recently ate here again after 4 years. Came with a friend last night, she had never been. I wasn't really feeling up to sushi because I had the worst sushi experience on st Patrick's Day.. ended up getting the spicy Thai bowl with noodles, my friend had general tso. It took a while for it to come out and the place wasn't overly busy. -also- the restraunt was extremely cold and dark. Not a fan.. anyway-- the food came finally. It was soooo hot, tempurture wise. But also the food itself was incredibly spicy, like yeah I ordered a spicy entree but my friend General tso and said it was incredibly spicy so spicy should couldn't finish it. Ok so what I ordered was supposed to just be veggies, chicken, and noodles. This thing was smothered in sauce. After a long week of cooking dinners from home the only thing my boyfriend and I looked forward to was enjoying sushi as a treat. Upon pick up, my boyfriend had a worried look on his face and immediate regret as the weight of the takeout bag seemingly strained his arm. With an empty belly you can imagine the amount of excitement we had. Hitting every green light on the way home seemed like a blessing. After not being able to contain the excitement we whipped open the bucket of tots. To our surprise, if you are looking to ingest a whole bag of frozen tots with pure delight. Have at this place. They were little crunchy spheres of heaven. And the sauce made us so excited I decided to hit the gas and shave about 2 minutes off our predicted drive home. We decided to skip the comfort idea and eat at the table based on the weight of the cinder blocks we were holding. We ordered six rolls, the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, sticky balls, snap crackle pop, yu yu, and chili. As the tops came off they looked impressive. But boy were we in for a treat. Thank god they included a sturdy pair of chopsticks because you will need them to floss afterwards with the bushel of cilantro they put in the sushi. I don't mean the kind of garnish you use to add flavor, but instead the whole bush of cilantro from your local Whole Foods. But I will proceed to say this is the only mere sight of flavor you will find in ANY of their sushi rolls. Even the soy sauce somehow has zero flavor. But if you are ever in the area, feel like spending about $100 on some cuisine, and looking for some rolled up rice with a slight flavor of sand paper you are in for a treat. read more

Were going to a concert at the national and needed something close by.... Think this is my new go to before a concert there! Sat at the bar as tables were all taken (a party of 3), were immediately greeted and got some Hardywood beers on tap (yum!). Decided to splurge and we ordered things to share, the seaweed salad, thai shrimp rolls, two sushi rolls, edamame and a tempura fried burger with tots. Hands down some of the best food we've had in a while and service was super speedy. Opted to get two desserts as well, sticky rice and fried bananas, both great. Stuck at home like everyone else, I ordered Sticky Rice to be delivered. Craving tots, but lowering my expectations on tots arriving a bit cold. Well, I was wrong! The tots arrived hot with the wonderful sauce on the side. Yum! I even re-heated leftover tots in the toaster oven this morning and they came out crispy. Win! I also ordered veggie potstickers, a fav of mine and always yummy. And, to be good, I ordered broccoli. Maybe not exciting, but definitely a good choice. And since we have a temporary lifting of delivery of mixed drinks, I tossed in a vodka limeade. I do not regret this decision, it was very tasty and arrived in a soup container with a note that it was for 21 and over. Everything was packed well and arrived quickly. Sticky Rice is the light of my existence. I come here every Friday for Happy Hour with my friends. For appetizer, I recommend their bucket of tots. I've never had tater tots as crispy and golden as the ones at Sticky Rice. On Fridays, they have half of certain rolls. My favorites to get are the salmon rolls. They're super simple, but a masterpiece in itself. If you're down for a drink, their bar has a selection of beers local to Virginia, not to mention theres sake bombs. After finally being seated was treated extremely rudely by the manager Katie Proffit who yelled at my table for sitting in the wrong seats, and snatched my menu away from me even after we told her that the waitress had sat us there. I am not sure why there are so much haters of Sticky Rice. ;) If you're open for a place with personality, then come here. I've come here with my toddler daughter, and it's surprisingly really accommodating for kids. Servers have been extra friendly to me and my daughter. Sticky Rice actually has a really good kids menu, and bring out crayons and drawing olsc mat for children (kid's menu on back). This is a great place for casual date night or for older punk rockers with kids, who want to relive some of the old dive scene with the whole family. read more
