So maybe I still don't get (or, more accurately, I refuse to get) the concept of a sushi place that also has tater tots on the menu. That fact aside, I went to Sticky Rice last night with one of my favorite DC Yelpers, Chris S., and we shared some pretty tasty bites. We'd already knocked back a few at the Red Palace, and I was ready to chow. We were quoted a 45-minute wait, but managed to snag two seats at the bar together. By the time we'd ordered our first round (sake bombs, complete with gong-ringing), our table was ready, but we decided to stay at the bar for our meal. We split the fried mushrooms, the chili roll, and some sticky balls. Although I'm definitely more of a sushi traditionalist, I appreciated the way the grilled pineapple, cilantro, jalapeño, cucumber, tuna, and tobiko complemented each other. The tempura topping added a touch of crunch without being too overwhelming. And the sticky balls were so good I contemplated another order. Balls of deep-fried tuna, crab, and sriracha rice topped with green onion, eel sauce, and wasabi dressing = yes, please. Sticky Rice has some good options but Im not really clear why the restaurant is so popular. The entrees are pretty average and the sushi is definitely not that good. I think SR is a perfectly adequate restaurant but I would love to see them strive for excellence. The best part about Sticky Rice is Thursday night Karaoke and video bar weekend nights. Well-meaning service, solid playlist. Most of the tables upstairs occupied at lunch included people from Gallaudet. Our server took our orders verbally, recited it back to us before going to the counter... and my poki order still magically came out as the yellow basil. Light and refreshing salad of diced hamachi. Salmon and hamachi nigiri cut alright. Average fish quality Chicken wings done well on the safe side, brushed with a sweet glaze. I was curious enough to try the ribs after overhearing the server tell another table that it amused him that the cook was kosher. Unevenly butchered ribs, as if they had only remembered at the last moment that the menu said five to a plate. Also tougher than tender. Non-fish items plated on a bed of napa. Everything garnished with a sprinkle of finely chopped scallions and mixed sesame seeds. This place ain't for me, I'm being generous at two stars. I could be suckered back for Thursday night karaoke though. read more

I finally got to the cool new place in my neighborhood. Went with a couple friends who are considering moving to DC from South Carolina before seeing a show at Palace of Wonders. Sticky Rice didn't disappoint, but it didn't overwhelm either. I'd say both the service and food was a three-star, but could get bumped up to four with a little effort. We got a few simple drinks and ordered several different things off the menu. The service was a little slow and inattentive, but not to the point that it became a problem. We were there to hang out and BS as much as eat, anyway. The sushi wasn't great, but not bad. The tots, however, were awesome! Very good and they bring plenty of them in that little bucket. They have some other interesting things on the menu that I'll have to try later. Definitely a place I'll come back to, even if I don't become a regular. read more

I've gone to the restaurant for dinner and also had delivery for lunch! Yes, they actually do FREE delivery until 6pm if you live in the local area. First, the experience at the restaurant. We went on a Tuesday night, so we were able to get seated right away, no wait and no reservation. We got seated right away, but service was really slow, albeit friendly. I really wanted to try the tater tots so we got some of those and I was in the mood for sushi. I went with the Snap, Crackle and Pop Roll which is basically a very spicy roll with salmon, tomiko, cucumbers, jalapenos, tempura crunches. Oh I could eat one of these rolls every day. DELICIOUS and fresh and plentiful! I actually could not finish the roll so I ate the rest for lunch the next day and it was still yummy and fresh. They give you 10 large pieces so it's plenty of food. The tater tots and dipping sauce were nothing special by themselves, but I suppose they would be a great pairing with any one of their sandwiches which I have yet to try. This is a cute space and worth visiting, but I can see how crazy this place it can get some nights so I would recommend making a reservation if you don't go early or on an off night. I like the punky, rock and roll feel of the place. Fun and festive tattoo art. Because I enjoy the sushi roll so much, I decided to order them for lunch one day when I was working from home. This option is available via GrubHub.com. I figured this would be an easy task since I live literally down the street a few blocks away. Why did the delivery driver call me THREE times before he got up to my apartment? First he called to ask if it was an apartment building (DUH it says the apartment number on the order) , then he called to ask where he can park (there is street parking all over the place not to mention a space for delivery drivers to park when dropping off food RIGHT OUT FRONT!), then he called to ask how to use the intercom( someone HELP ME!). I almost gave up, but he finally got to my apartment. What does it take to be a delivery driver in DC? Ironically, this is not the first time I've had issues getting food delivered here. It couldn't be more simple. Do they not know how to deliver to apartment buildings that use intercom systems out here? Weird. But anyway, I was happy that my Snap, Crackle, Pop roll arrived fresh and unscathed. Delicious and spicy as usual and I suppose, delicious enough NOT to deter me from ordering from them again. Overall, recommended! Oh and I also tasted the Singapore Noodles my boyfriend ordered at the restaurant and that was just delicious too! Very well done and they give you a lot of food. Ended up at Sticky Rice because I dragged my boyfriend out to NE for Toki Underground... that had a 2 hour wait on a Thursday night (seriously). We were starving and started wandering around when a few people recommended Sticky Rice. We really loved the halloween decor, and were immediately seated upstairs. Our waiter (Justin) was AWESOME, and really helpful with choosing what to order as 'first-timers'. We ordered: side tater tots (more than enough for two people) and the sauce that comes with it is AWESOME, we literally asked for like 3 more dishes of the sauce it was that good, garden balls (SO GREAT, we really recommend these), and the following sushi rolls: the gardens on fire (was OK, we wouldn't order these again), the spicy avocado roll (it didn't have spicy sauce? just rolled in red pepper flakes... which was odd, but it was good), and the santa fe (i personally didn't like this roll, but my boyfriend loved it). Honestly, the sushi was sub-par, there are way better sushi places in DC. However, the ambience is awesome, the appetizers/garden balls were GREAT, and the sushi wasn't terrible. I would definitely come back here with friends for a fun night, but not if I was craving awesome sushi. Our waiter also gave us two free drink tokens for the bar downstairs, which was a plus ;) My recommendation? DEFINITELY get the tater tots and the garden balls. We beat the rush on a Saturday afternoon and got a table in the relatively empty upstairs after a few minutes wait. Sticky balls: Way too much rice and not enough of whatever else was supposed to be in it. Didn't matter because all I could taste was the rice. The texture was slimy and it was only slightly ok because it was fried and paired with a vinegary soy sauce. Chili roll: Eating seafood that isn't fresh is the worst. The tuna was awful and the pineapple in the roll didn't pair well at all. 2000 leagues: Best tasting roll, but it would have been a better dish if the octopus was served on its own and not in a roll. Again, the un-proportional ratio of rice to filling ruined it. Poki: Bad tuna. The seaweed salad was the best thing I ate all meal. I was surprised to see how quickly the place filled up for how bad the food was. Maybe some people dig sushi and waffles for Saturday brunch. Maybe some people dig paying 9 bucks for a bucket of tater tots. Maybe some people like waiting forever for their food. On the plus side, our waitress was nice and service was good. First off, what an awkward greet staff! I walked in the front door with a smile and the two greeters looked, almost glared at me for 3 whole seconds before one of em spoke. Instead of asking, "How many? Two?" It was like they were about to ask me, "Can I help you with something?" It was a stormy day early in the week, either Monday or Tuesday around 5:30 in the evening, and the block this is located on is remote from the likes of trendy Columbia Heights, so few patrons spotted the tables here. I ordered miso soup, two sushi rolls: Rainbow roll and the Fantabulous Amazing roll and Mongolian beef noodles. All of them lacked flavor. Very bland! The sushi was so NOT fantabulous! The second floor felt like it didn't have air conditioning, so my arms had to be peeled from the table at times. Also note: they do not have happy hour here. I was at the theater across the street watching a play and came here for dinner right after the show. Not quite what I expected. The menu is actually pretty large and has many interesting things . . . but I don't know that I'll ever return to try anything else. The tater tots were, well, tater tots. Other places that serve tots do it with certain spices or -something- that makes them more special than what you can do at home in your own oven from the frozen bag in the freezer; Sticky Rice, not so much. And the "special sauce" is sauce, but, though decent, is hardly "special." {As an aside, I discovered that a tater tot really shines when several pieces of pickled ginger are added to it -- yum!!! Much better than with any sauce.} You do get a lot of tots though. The sushi was unimpressive as well. I tried three completely different types and wouldn't recommend any of them. IF I ever return, and it would have to be under duress, I'll try a noodle dish [did I mention they were out of soba noodles -- even though I was there early in the evening -- one of their three types of noodles and the basis of their cold soba salad that looked so good??] or one of their "Big Plates," but I'll pass on more mushy sushi combinations. Too much cream and not enough flavor. Even liberal helpings of ginger and wasabi couldn't save it, and I used to think just about anything could be made better with ginger and wasabi! The atmosphere's alright, though a little stale. Warm reds and dark woods. As in many Asian and Asian-themed restaurants in DC. The tattooed backs and other framed tattoo photos made for funky, interesting art. (However, on one wall there was a series of plywood squares that I'm hoping is either covering future art or providing the basis for it.) The entrance is indeed confusing as the bottom floor looks more like a standard bar so it's simple to walk right past the hostesses who, while friendly when I was there, look like they're simply patrons sitting at the end of the bar nearest the door. This ranks as one of the least memorable dining experiences this year. I think Mickey D's can top Sticy Rice without a problem. The coconut shrimp with soba noodles was inedible. Overcooked veggies, poorly cooked and underseasoned shrimp accompanied by overcooked soba noodles with a consistency of gelatinuous gunk that looked as if it were tossed in Elmer's glue rather than peanut sauce. The overhyped tator tots appeared to be your regular Ore-Ida tots served with mayo/ketchup/sriracha sauce touted to be their "secret sauce". On with the rolls.... Well. Sticky Rice certainly does well to describe the rolls here. The rice was so sticky that one more drop of water woud have yielded porridge of some sorts. Maybe the texture of the rice would be best described as transitional state from rice to rice cake? And to top it off, the gari ginger exuded some musty odor similar to a wet towel that wasn't dried properly. Don't waste your money here unless you are simply craving rice on H Street. read more

Tries this place running a promotion via Postmates. I ordered fried dumplings,salmon nigiri,unagi and tuna rolls. The dumplings were fried well however the dipping sauce was just SPICY and unseasoned. Both rolls were edible however completely lacked taste. Not only was the rice unseasoned the tuna seemed old and the pieces of eel were so small you could barely taste it at all. These items are not even fairly priced. In short over hyped over priced under seasoned. If I ate this at the restaurant I would have sent it all back. read more

As a caveat, I should say that we ventured to Sticky Rice on the same evening as the H Street festival - so Sticky Rice was particularly packed even though it was only 6pm when we got there. This place is, in a word, loud. Very loud. It felt a bit like having dinner at a very loud bar on a Friday night. Even though we were sitting in one of the long booths upstairs, we still had to shout to hear each other (this was made even more disorienting because the benches affixed to the walls seem to move - so any time someone sitting on the bench would shift or wiggle, the entire bench would sway - a bit like eating on a swing). I wouldn't recommend it for an intimate evening, a quiet night out, or a date (unless you have decided you're not all that interested in talking to your date). The food itself was reasonably priced and tasty (the Singapore noodles hit just the right note of spice - with shrimp, chicken, lots of bean sprouts and scallions- $12; the fried rice was particularly good) though I do get the sense that spiciness does a lot of work for them (that is, instead of really interesting combinations of food or flavors, a lot of the dishes we ordered were just plain spicy). The real miss of the evening was the hot and sour soup which had the consistency of dirty dish water. The service was a bit like the service at Granville Moore's - hipster standoffish - our waitress appeared only to take our orders and then was gone for long stretches of time (so that we had empty water glasses for good stretches of the evening, and some periods of time when we wished for some napkins). For the price (you could easily get dinner for two for $30), Sticky Rice is a good option, though I think one could get equivalent food in a nicer space at a lower volume at Rice in Logan Circle. read more

This is my favorite sushi spot in DC! Awesome food and drinks. I always order the bucket of tots to share with my friends and the Sticky Balls which I highly recommend. The Philadelphia Roll is top knotch, as well. The servers are really knowledgeable and have great recommendations for first timers. Pretty cool location on H Street. I went here on a date about a year ago and this place really sticks out in my mind because the experience really let me know that I am an impatient and probably horrible person. There is nothing like a restaurant that makes it feel like you keep it real. It was in the dead heat of summer and we agreed to meet here one evening after work. I showed up on time. She arrived about an hour and a half late. I had a few beers beforehand. And by a few beers, I mean I got drunk. There was a wonderful special on Ichiban at the time. She was mad, but I don't really understand how you could be mad at someone for taking advantage of SAVINGS. This girl also suggested that we share a bucket of tater-tots, which I vetoed because when it is really hot out, tater-tots look and feel as though they are warmed-over grubs. This probably kinda' killed the romantic mood for evening. She ordered a small plate of noodle soup, while I feasted on sushi. I offered to pay, but she seemed so disgusted with my earlier metaphor that she thought my cash carried pathogens. It didn't make my Godzirra roll taste anything but delicious, that's for sure. At any rate, Sticky Rice is a cool place to eat or grab a few drinks. The atmosphere is a little quirky, but very inviting. Removing myself from the potential case study you've got on your hands about gentrification and the infiltration of the "other" in the 'hood (with regards to capitalism, of course), I'll say that I liked Sticky Rice just fine. My sakitini was delicious (way to have my first sake), though I couldn't tell if it was strong or not. I mean, I saw the girl pour the booze--holding the bottle way up high, limp wristed, not counting the seconds as they ticked by--so I know it *should* have been, but I wasn't tipsy after it. Not sure what to make of that. The food was pretty good, though. I got the curry fried rice with chicken and managed to eat nearly all of it (abundant portions). My girls said the same of their dishes, only we had to wait a good 30-40 minutes for our food. Boop. Ambiance-wise, I can't say Sticky Rice is a place I'd hang out often, mostly because it made me feel weird inside. Ionno. Didn't help that they were playing Miffy the Bunny cartoons without sound, and we all know that Miffy and friends' mouths DO NOT MOVE, so God only knows what they were saying! As you read this, remember: I have a sushi problem. If there was an SA program, I'd be in it. To be fair, I should have ordered something simple, like salmon nigiri, to be able to really "compare" and to better discern the freshness of the fish. But I went for a couple of silly rolls. Because that's how I r....never mind. The Chili Roll (tuna, pineapple, cilantro, cucumber) was an okay but somewhat muddled combination. And the rice texture, combined with tempura flakes, seemed a bit....well...sticky. The Sticky Balls that everyone raves about? I've got to assume it's an epidemic of juvenile humor ("hee hee! I ordered his sticky balls!") that makes it so popular. A deep-fried collection of who knows what. It didn't taste bad, but one can say the same of almost anything fried, except perhaps earwax. The Billy Goat's Gruff, goat cheese wrapped in yellowtail and broiled, was pleasant, but once you start broiling things, I feel like you need to stop calling it "sushi" and start calling it "small cooked fish appetizer." The service was fine. Not great, not awful, just "fine." I'm not sure the table next to ours would agree, since two different servers tried to bring us that table's food. No, no, no. Overpriced with a weird vibe. This place tries too hard to be trendy but does not try hard at anything else. My partner and I came here for a romantic evening while we were in the H street area. Needless to say...we have never been back since! I've had better sushi at more reasonable prices - Chinatown is a good neighborhood for that. I don't know what the problem was, but our flighty waiter kept forgetting about us. Passed by us multiple times without taking our order. Food took a hot minute to get to us, and then...only a portion of the items came. We kept reminding him. Turns out, he didn't put our full order in all at once. He was going to pace us by putting certain items in first, and others later. I can't recall specifics on the menu to make this a very worthy review here on Yelp-land, BUT I do know that this is my favorite sushi place in DC. Their food is good and I love the DC hipster vibe. It would be five if the service was consistent. The food is awesome. I recommend the Garden Balls and the ubiquitous tater tots (served with tot sauce). The design and atmosphere is hip and trendy. The service needs some help. I will chalk it up to being new and still finding its groove. A 30 min wait can turn into over an hour wait (but they have cell phone service instead of those crappy buzzers which is something every restaurant should adopt) The place was not staffed as it should have on a Sat night and waiting for a diet coke took 15 min or so. The food was great, and our server was nice and funny, just swamped! The next time I went on a weekday night, things were prompt, but the place was not near full. When I heard about Sticky Rice, the first thing someone told me was "You have to try the bucket of tater tots." I was confused. Tater tots at a sushi restaurant. But when I tried them they were SOOO GODD! Just crispy enough, with this amazing sauce.... I could go on and on about them. Give them a try, and make sure you have a couple of friends to help you finish them. We also had the Godzirra, Sticky Balls, and the Drawn-and-Buttered. The Godzirra was good, and the sticky balls were a good small dish that was fried with tuna, crab, and sriracha race that was pretty good. The drawn-and-buttered had this butter sauce that came with it, which I can honestly say I've never tried before. It was an interesting mix. Enough to clog your arteries, but with a smile on your face. The service was so-so. She was great when she was with us, but it took her a while to take our order. She apologized, but to ask for drinks was hard too. I felt bad, since it looked like she was the only one taking care of everyone upstairs. A guy downstairs with an eye patch came up once in a while to bring some food. A small place, but with an extra server or two, the place would have 5 stars. The place was packed, and there wasn't an open table other than the table we reserved online. I could see myself coming here for their happy hour, with each day of the week having deals from 4-7pm at the bar. Maybe some other time, if just for some sake and tots. I'm not a fan of the "hipster" movement and H St. has turned into a FULL BLAST hipster area....but I must say that Sticky Rice does have a really cool set up on H St. I've sat downstairs and upstairs and it's like 2 different worlds. Upstairs is a bit more private and dinner-like setting, downstairs is a little more crowded and lively with Kung-Fu movies being projected on the flat screens to keep me entertained. Nice touch. The Sushi there IS hands down awesome, but I've also gone there to try out their other dishes and have NEVER been disappointed ever. So that speaks for itself aside from all the hipsters I was surrounded by. read more

Along with the Rock and Roll Hotel, this stands as H Street's hipster central, not that there's anything wrong with that. I like Sticky rice, but let's get one thing straight: don't go to Sticky Rice looking for great sushi. Go to Sticky Rice looking for inexpensive, carbolicious goodness and you won't be disappointed. They keep it fun and inventive with things like Samurai Shrimp (shrimp tempura), tater tots, and their signature Sticky Rolls (inari sushi with crab, tuna and siracha). If you're going to go for sushi, stick with the rolls, those are hard to mess up. Saturday and Sunday brunch is a sure way to soak up the previous night's overindulgence. As for the libations, in addition to several varieties of sake, there are three draft choices: Sapporo, Shock Top Wheat and Great Divide Samurai Rice Ale (unfiltered and strikingly similiar to a hefeweizen). 20 bottle and can beers, including the expected Sapporo, Kirin and Asahi Super Dry, but also inlcuding three varieites of Hitachino Nest (White Ale, Weizen and Stout), Sierra Nevada, Newcastle Brown and the requisite cans of PBR. read more

I'll just be blunt and say I've had much better sushi in and around DC. Damn, I should have ordered those tots everyone raves about, but I couldn't bring myself to do it...tin bucket loaded up with the greasy bar-food staple...at a sushi restaurant...no thanks. On to the service - slow. I waited on the water for my tea to "get hot" for 20 minutes. Huh? What kind of water takes 20 minutes to boil? The sushi took as equally long. After craving sushi all week, I finally made it to Sticky Rice on Friday. My friend and I arrived around 9:45 pm and we only had to wait 10 minutes for a space at the bar (we were going to eat upstairs and decided on the bar instead). Tots!!!! Yummmy...so good, but my friend and I couldn't finish the bucket of tots. I got a Philly roll and we got two drawn-n-buttered rolls. They were both excellent and the drawn-n-buttered was a whole new experience (garlic butter for dipping). All in all we had a blast. Drank PBR with a few shots mixed in. I just landed yesterday and then decided what should my family and i get for dinner. Then we are interested in this restaurant. At first it looks pretty appetizing. We ordered three main dish (singaporean noodle, kick ass kimchi w salmon, and dirty vegan), a roll and chicken gyoza. Then first bad sign comes. The food took forever to come out. We waited for almost 40-60mins. The first food to come out is the sushi. The name of the sushi is snap, crackle, pop. It tastes pretty good. The gyoza is okay too. Then my order, kick a** kimchi with salmon, came. The salmon smells very fishy, and overall its just a stack or rice with asparagus, peas, salmon and a side bowl of kimchi, something you can get your self at home. It tasted horrible. Almost the most horrible food I ever tasted. The salmon is very bland, the kimchi is meh too, and the veggies smells nasty because the salmon is very fishy. Its a very horrible experience. For anyone who wants to come here I suggest to only eat the sushi. The sushi is okay. The singapore noodle is okay too, but I doubt about the other bowls. read more

When I checked Yelp upon arrival to see what dishes Yelpers recommended, I was surprised to see this place had only three stars. I'd thought it was a fairly buzz-y restaurant. Well, I soon learned that three stars is perfectly fair: my visit was acceptable, but by no means great. The decor is cute and hip. Love the origami crane mobile upstairs. This neighborhood was nothing but abandoned row houses not too long ago, so I wouldn't expect the interior to look like the place was built last week. It doesn't look dirty-- it just looks like a hipster city restaurant in an old building. I like that kind of thing, but your mileage may vary. We (husband and self) ordered the tater tots because they're apparently The Thing this place does. They're good tater tots, and the sauce is very good. They're also $8.50 for a bucket. Of potatoes. I have four kids, so I know me some tater tots. They're making a good profit off this appetizer. I got the eel bento, which the menu describes as including eel on rice, gyoza, seaweed salad, and a spicy salmon roll. I received a delicious looking bento with additional rice where the salmon roll should have been. I asked the server, and he checked the menu and confirmed I was right, then brought the salmon roll a few minutes later. They corrected it just fine, but seriously guys. The menu is not that elaborate. Service at lunch is slow, which probably explains why the place was pretty empty at that time, and it's even slower when they forget things from your meal. That said, the food was good, and at $10 the bento was a good deal for what was in it. Service was pretty hands-off, but I felt the server erred on the side of being out of the way rather than in-your-face, which wasn't a bad thing. He was polite and competent. If you don't mind waiting an average of 45 mins for your table (I waited 1.5 hours last night on a Tuesday), shouting across the table over the blare of music to talk to your friends, and waiting an additional 45 minutes for your food, then this place is for you. I've lived in DC for 8+ years and I love finding new places to dine, but I have never had such a poor experience at a restaurant and I plan never to return. This was my 4th attempt to eat at Sticky Rice in the last two months. The first time, I put my name on the list, left my phone number, and they never called. The next time, I decided not to wait the 45 minutes. The third time, they wouldn't take my name because the list of people waiting was too long. Last night was the first time I got in to eat after waiting 1.5 hours on a Tuesday! After finally sitting down, the waiter told us they were slammed and we shouldn't expect our food quickly. He barely paid attention to us and I had to walk my credit card up to the counter to pay. I will say -- their product is pretty good. We had a mix of dishes and liked them all. But there are other places in DC that are just as good or better (Uni in Dupont Circle) without the hassle. The background music was a good selection, but way too loud. I think this place is over-hyped by all the people trying to discover H Street NE. Sticky Rice could improve with some healthy competition and by, very simply, taking reservations. Also, seeing as we were told the wait would be 45 minutes and we actually waited 1.5 hours, it would have been nice for the manager to offer us a drink upon sitting down. Full disclosure: A friend gave us her expiring Living Social coupon, so we didn't have to pay for this. But I'd be even more annoyed if we had. We arrived around 12:45 for lunch, and got the last available table. Got our water right away, perused the menu, ordered apps and entrees. The prices were affordable so we over-ordered to use more of the coupon's value (but still more than I usually spend for lunch). So far so good. 45 minutes later...no food. We were able to flag down the waiter to get tea, and I got one refill on water. But we just idly sat there, starving, watching people who came in after us get their food, eat, and LEAVE. Despite the small space we couldn't get any waitstaff to stop so we could ask where our food was. The table behind us had two men, and only one got food at all--the waiter said he "didn't hear" the other man order. I also watched a cook bring some spring rolls upstairs and pop them in the microwave. Yum! Finally our waiter reappeared bearing food--the entrees. No apps to be found, and he didn't mention it or apologize, even when we brought it up. He commented that the sauce was missing for the tots, but we knew he'd never be back with it. My noodle dish was thick with sauce and no better than the cheap Chinese delivery I normally get. My husband's tuna wasn't as done as he'd ordered, but the bun was burned. Tots were overcooked with no salt. We retrieved our own ketchup from the shelf since there was no sauce. Nobody came by to check on things. After we were done with the entrees, the waiter came back and blamed the kitchen for the lack of apps. (still no mention of the sauce) By then, there was no point in waiting so he canceled that part of the order and gave us the check. I fully understand that things happen, the kitchen can be slow, etc. But in the lengthy time we had to observe the waitstaff and other activities, it didn't seem like anyone knew what they were doing. I had heard all of the Sticky Rice "horror stories" from the Yelp community, but the girlfriend and I with a couple of other friends decided to take our chances with Sticky Rice on a Saturday night. Plus, I had a LivingSocial coupon to burn so our exposure to an expensive meal that may suck was somewhat reduced. Following the advice of others, I had made reservations for 7:30. One of our party was running late, but the hostess sat us upstairs anyway. I always appreciate that and hoped it was a good sign of things to come. We checked out the cocktail list, but none of their drinks seemed that interesting or unique. Therefore, I started off with a Sapporo since you have to have Japanese beer if you're eating sushi (I think it's a law in Japan). Sapporo, along with Kirin, are my two Japanese beer favorites. Sapporo has a nice crispness to it and a clean finish but isn't lacking in flavor like some other lagers. The GF and I started with the Veggie Tempura Plate ($8.50) which had a nice-sized portion of tempura fried asparagus, sweet potato, onion, broccoli, and pineapple with the obligatory ponzu dipping sauce. However, all of the pieces seemed a bit oily and soggy, lacking the crunchiness one would expect from tempura fried vegetables. For our main course, we had an order of the Maguro (tuna) nigiri ($6) and several Maki orders: the Snap, Crackle, Pop ($12.50); G.I. Joe ($7.50); Goochland ($7), and the Millennium Roll ($8). To be honest, Sticky Rice's sushi was pretty good. The maguro was fresh and a relatively large sized cut of fish...comparable to Current and larger than Kushi or Sushi Taro. The rolls were also nice-sized. The Millennium Roll made with crabmeat, smoked salmon, eel, cream cheese, scallions, and sriracha sauce was the best of the bunch. Its presentation was quite pleasing and easily matched by a successful combination of flavors. The G.I. Joe and Goochland were also quite successful and added unique twists like wasabi peas and goat cheese, respectively. The Snap, Crackle, Pop was the least of the four rolls we tried. It lacked the expected spiciness and crunchiness that was advertised by its description as a spicy roll with salmon, cucumbers, jalapenos, tobiko and fried tempura batter for crunchiness. However, it was a true to its word as being a "monster maki". The ten pieces made for a generously-sized roll. While the food was definitely a strength, Sticky Rice failed where it mattered most to me...taking care of me, the customer. First, whoever controls the volume knob for the music must be hard of hearing or thought we were at the 9:30 Club because the "background" music was exceedingly loud and made it difficult to converse. Most egregiously, our server, while a seemingly pleasant person, seemed easily distracted and, as a result, was inattentive. Our water glasses were never refilled during our entire meal. She never came to check on us to see if we needed anything. When we asked for low-salt soy sauce, she got it but delivered it to the table next to us...not ours. At least, she got the bill correct. Sticky Rice does have good food. Sadly, it's suffering from an identity crisis. Is it a restaurant serving Asian cuisine or is it a club catering to the club kid/frat boy/sorority girl crowd? My meal here was A-OK. Not offensive, not quite memorable. The pan seared Tuna Bites were excellent and one of the favorites of the night. I don't understand why everyone loves the tater tots, but I think you can skip those. Nothing special about them. The Sticky Balls had a nice taste but were definitely missing something. It probably would have been better if I could detect the tuna and crab in it. The shrimp coconut noodles were very good. The flavors all worked very well together, although despite being advertised as slightly spicy, I did not detect any spice. I would suggest avoiding the actual roll. Neither the Drawn N Buttered nor the Pretty Roll (tuna and avocado) impressed me much. read more

Accidentally wandered into this place while waiting for our table at Toki Underground & ended up staying. Ordered godrizza roll, snap crackle pop roll, & drawn n' buttered roll, + tater tots. The world famous "special sauce" that comes w/the tots is actually just sriracha & mayo, nothing magical but good nonetheless. Drawn n' buttered roll was dry and the butter is literally just that so it just made the roll shiny & oily. Godrizza roll was the most decent of the bunch but the rolls are small for their price ($12.50 each). Ambiance and servers are friendly though, but I think this will be a first/last visit for me. *Closing advice: Be patient & wait for your table at Toki Underground! read more

Anyone who has ever been to a decent sushi restaurant will quickly realize that this place sucks balls (please excuse my language). Sure the place looks nice. Sure they have chic names for their rolls. Sure their sushi chefs are hipsters with tattoos and not of asian decent. But seriously, WTF!!?!! Both times I've been here the sushi itself has been SUPER weak. Rice was old/stale, rolls were small, and the cuts of fish are just plain terrible. The service is out of this world bad. Let me repeat that, THE SERVICE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD BAD. They messed up our orders, brought out the wrong food, didn't bring the right food when we asked for it, and then the server argued with us when we politely complained. So many reviews. How can so many people hate cheap sushi? Rad: This may be the only place that serves sushi where someone has been stabbed. The hilarious juxtaposition is not lost on me.
